MLB News: Andy Pages pounds two homers as Dodgers dump Reds

Andy Pages hit two homers and drove in four runs, Emmet Sheehan tied his career high with 10 strikeouts and the Los Angeles Dodgers earned a 7-0 victory over the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Monday in the opener of a three-game series.

Sheehan (5-2) did not allow a run over a career-best seven innings. He permitted two hits and one walk. Jack Dreyer and Anthony Banda each threw an inning to complete a three-hit shutout.

Mookie Betts added a home run for the Dodgers, who returned from a 3-4 road trip to Colorado and San Diego and used the victory to move back into sole possession of first place in the National League West.

Hunter Greene (5-4) gave up five runs (three earned) over five-plus innings for the Reds, who are 3-4 on a nine-game three-city road trip that ends Wednesday. The Los Angeles native issued two walks and struck out three.

The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Pages hit a home run off Greene into the home bullpen in left field.

Pages followed a Michael Conforto double in the fifth inning with his second home run of the game and 23rd of the season, also to left.

Los Angeles padded its lead in the sixth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Pages hit what appeared to be an inning-ending grounder to shortstop. However, the ball went between the legs of the Reds’ Elly De La Cruz to score two runs for a 5-0 lead.

Sheehan’s 10th strikeout came against Spencer Steer for the second out of the seventh inning. Betts then made a diving stop in the hole at shortstop, and his throw to first completed seven innings for the right-hander.

Betts celebrated with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, his 14th of the season and third in 16 games. Pages drove in another run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly.

The Reds’ Gavin Lux, who helped the Dodgers win the World Series last year and played five seasons in Los Angeles, received his championship ring in a pregame ceremony. Lux doubled for one of Cincinnati’s three hits.

NFL News: NFL roster roundup: Eagles waive QB Kyle McCord

Quarterback Kyle McCord’s time with his hometown Eagles was short, with Philadelphia waiving the rookie just months after picking him in the sixth round of the NFL draft.

NFL teams have until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday to reduce their active rosters to 53 players.

A native of nearby Mount Laurel, N.J., McCord played every snap of the Eagles’ 19-17 preseason win over the New York Jets Friday but largely did not impress throughout the preseason.

McCord’s time appeared to run out when the Eagles trade for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Howell on Sunday to add depth in the wake of Tanner McKee’s injury.

McCord, 22, played college football at Ohio State and Syracuse.

MIAMI DOLPHINS

The Miami Dolphins are releasing veteran cornerback Mike Hilton, his agents confirmed on Monday.

Hilton, 31, signed with the Dolphins in free agency on July 26 after four seasons each with Pittsburgh (2017-20) and Cincinnati (2021-24).

Hilton has recorded 13 interceptions, 11.5 sacks, 520 tackles (66 for losses) and 56 passes defensed in 123 career games (56 starts).

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

ESPN has reported that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are moving on from veteran Kyle Trask at quarterback, electing to roll with Teddy Bridgewater as the primary backup to starter Baker Mayfield.

Trask, 27, served as a backup for the Buccaneers — including No. 2 on the depth chart the past two seasons — following his selection in the second round (No. 64 overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft. The team resigned him in March, but Trask had been battling a shoulder injury this preseason. He has 11 pass attempts in his career.

Bridgewater 32, has flirted with retirement in recent seasons but returned for a comeback as the Detroit Lions’ backup the past two seasons. Over a 10-year career, Bridgewater has 15,120 passing yards and 75 touchdowns.

MLB News: Cal Raleigh’s 50th homer sparks M’s in win over Padres

Cal Raleigh became the first player whose primary position is catcher to hit 50 home runs in a major league season as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting San Diego Padres 9-6 Monday night.

Raleigh went deep into the second deck in left field in the first inning off San Diego starter JP Sears for his third homer in the past two games. He became the second player in franchise history to reach the 50-homer milestone, joining Ken Griffey Jr. (56 homers in both 1997 and 1998).

Raleigh, who went 1-for-4 as Seattle’s designated hitter on the night, joined Mickey Mantle as the only switch hitters to produce a 50-homer season. The New York Yankees great belted 52 homers in 1956 and 54 in 1961.

Jorge Polanco went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs for the Mariners, who rallied from an early three-run deficit and won for the third time in four games and remained a half-game back of the Yankees for the American League’s second wild-card spot.

Seattle improved to 4-0 against the Padres this season to clinch the inaugural Vedder Cup, named for Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder who has ties to both cities. The clubs conclude their season series with games the next two days.

Gavin Sheets, Jake Cronenworth, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Ramon Laureano homered for San Diego, which took its second loss in a row after a five-game winning streak.

Mariners starter Bryce Miller (3-5) got the victory despite allowing four runs on six hits over five innings. The right-hander walked one and struck out four.

Padres reliever David Morgan (1-2) gave up five runs in the fifth inning as Seattle snapped a 4-4 tie.

With one out in the fifth, Raleigh was hit by a pitch and Julio Rodriguez grounded into a forceout. Eugenio Suarez walked and Josh Naylor hit a run-scoring single to left.

After a walk to Mitch Garver, Polanco grounded a two-run double down the right field line. Wandy Peralta replaced Morgan and allowed a bloop single to right by J.P. Crawford, scoring the final two runs of the inning.

After Raleigh’s homer, the Padres responded by going deep three times off Miller in the second. Sheets and Cronenworth hit solo shots and Tatis Jr. drove in two after a walk to No. 9 hitter Freddy Fermin.

In the bottom of the inning, Garver reached on an error by third baseman Manny Machado before Polanco lined a pitch just over the left field wall to pull Seattle within 4-3.

The Mariners tied it in the fourth, loading the bases with no outs on singles by Naylor and Polanco sandwiching a walk to Garver. The run scored as Crawford grounded into a double play.

Laureano homered in the seventh to make it 9-5.

The Padres got a final run in the ninth on a single by pinch hitter Will Wagner, a throwing error by third baseman Suarez and a groundout.

Sears yielded four runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out two.

MLB News: Cal Raleigh hits 50th HR, joins Mickey Mantle in exclusive club

A day after standing alone in the record books, the Seattle Mariners’ Cal Raleigh took his place alongside one of the all-time greats on Monday night.

With one out and the bases empty in the first inning, Raleigh hit a solo home run off San Diego Padres starter JP Sears, his 50th long ball of the season.

Raleigh became the second switch hitter in major league history to hit 50 home runs in a season, joining New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle. The blast also extends Raliegh’s record for home runs in a season by a player whose primary position is catcher — a mark the Mariners slugger broke on Sunday when he passed Kansas City Royals star Salvador Perez’s record of 48 set in 2021.

Raleigh, serving as a designated hitter in the Monday game at Seattle, finished 1-for-4 in the Mariners’ 9-6 win.

According to ESPN, Raleigh, 28, is also the first player in history to hit at least 20 home runs from each side of the plate.

Raleigh now leads Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies and the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani — the next-closest players on the homer leaderboard — by five home runs.

MLB News: Jose Soriano, four Angels relievers shut out Rangers

Zach Neto led off the game with a homer and Jose Soriano combined with four relievers on a shutout as the Los Angeles Angels blanked the Texas Rangers 4-0 on Monday in the opener of a three-game series at Arlington, Texas.

The Angels snapped a three-game losing streak and won for just the second time in their past seven contests. Texas, meanwhile, had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Soriano (9-9) pitched for his first time in eight days, having returned to the team from extended paternity leave. He outdueled Rangers ace Jacob deGrom by hurling 5 2/3 innings and allowing four hits and a walk while striking out six.

Los Angeles’ Logan O’Hoppe also homered, and Travis d’Arnaud had a pair of run-scoring hits.

deGrom (10-6), coming off a season-high nine days of rest, lasted five frames, surrendering two runs on three hits and two walks. He fanned seven. He is winless in five starts since July 28 and dropped his fourth straight decision.

The Angels got on the board immediately as Neto took deGrom’s first pitch of the game just over the left-center-field fence.

Los Angeles added to its lead in the fourth when Taylor Ward walked with one out, went to second on a two-out single by Luis Rengifo and scored on a single by d’Arnaud.

d’Arnaud drove in the Angels’ third run with a double in the sixth, again plating Ward — this time from first base after Ward drew a walk from Texas reliever Luis Curvelo.

The Rangers threatened in the bottom of the sixth as a walk to Josh Smith and a single by Wyatt Langford with two outs chased Soriano. Los Angeles reliever Reid Detmers entered and struck out Corey Seager to stunt the rally.

O’Hoppe added a round-tripper in the ninth off Jacob Webb.

Kenley Jensen, the fifth Los Angels pitcher, finished off the game with a perfect bottom of the ninth.

The Rangers announced before Monday’s game that second baseman Marcus Semien would miss the rest of the regular season with a broken bone in his left foot.

MLB News: Alec Burleson’s walk-off blast boosts Cards over Pirates

Alec Burleson hit a walk-off solo homer with two outs in the ninth to lift the St. Louis Cardinals past the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 Monday night.

Burleson was 4-for-5 with two runs scored for the Cardinals. Willson Contreras drove in two runs before home plate umpire Derek Thomas ejected him in the seventh inning for protesting a called third strike.

After teammates pulled an enraged Contreras off the field, Thomas also ejected Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol. Along the way a bucket of chewing gum was tossed onto the field from the Cardinals dugout.

St. Louis starter Michael McGreevy allowed four runs on six hits in six innings while striking out seven and walking two. Reliever Riley O’Brien (2-0) earned the victory after blowing the save in the top of the ninth.

Bryan Reynolds hit a two-run homer and Spencer Horwitz had a homer and two RBIs for the Pirates, whose four-game winning streak ended.

Pittsburgh starter Johan Oviedo held the Cardinals to one run on three hits in four innings. He struck out five and walked one.

Reliever Dennis Santana (4-5) took the loss by allowing Burleson’s 409-foot blast.

The Pirates moved ahead 1-0 in the first on Ronny Simon’s single, Reynolds’ ground-rule double, and Horwitz’s RBI groundout.

The Cardinals tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the inning as Nolan Gorman walked, Thomas Saggese and Jordan Walker followed with singles and Nathan Church hit a sacrifice fly.

Pittsburgh took a 4-1 lead in the third on a single by Nick Gonzales, Reynolds’ two-run homer and Horwitz’s solo blast.

The Cardinals rallied for five with two outs in the fifth to seize a 6-4 lead. Church hit a single and eventually scored on Masyn Winn’s single. After Burleson hit a ground-rule double, Contreras’ two-run single, Gorman’s RBI double and Saggese’s run-scoring single pushed St. Louis ahead.

Pittsburgh cut its deficit to 6-5 in the seventh on a walk to Jack Suwinski, Joey Bart’s single, and Gonzales’ sacrifice fly.

The Pirates tied the game 6-6 in the ninth. After Liover Peguero was hit by a pitch, he stole second base and scored on Simon’s double.

MLB News: Brewers’ bullpen stifles Diamondbacks’ rally

Andruw Monasterio and Caleb Durbin homered as the Milwaukee Brewers held off the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5 on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series.

Monasterio’s third homer, a one-out solo shot in the fourth, put the Brewers up 6-0. Arizona rallied within 6-5, but Durbin opened the eighth inning with his ninth home run, sending a 1-2 pitch from reliever Bryce Jarvis 378 feet to left to make it 7-5.

Brandon Woodruff (5-1) allowed five runs, all in the sixth inning, and five hits over 5 2/3 innings while striking out eight and walking one.

Aaron Ashby followed with 1 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out five, and Nick Mears retired the only two batters he faced. Abner Uribe finished with a perfect ninth for his third save.

Milwaukee increased its lead in the NL Central to 4 1/2 games over the Chicago Cubs, who were idle. The Brewers are 4-6 since amassing their franchise-record 14-game winning streak.

The Diamondbacks trailed 6-0 early, but rallied in the sixth against Woodruff, who allowed only one hit through the first five innings.

Alek Thomas singled to open the inning and Geraldo Perdomo was hit by a pitch. Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll followed with RBI singles to make it 6-2. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. then jumped on the first pitch for a three-run homer, his 19th, to cut the lead to 6-5.

The Brewers scored five runs in the third, opening the inning with six consecutive hits. Isaac Collins doubled and moved to third when Blake Perkins singled to snap an 0-for-16 skid. Monasterio and Brice Turang followed with RBI singles to put Milwaukee up 2-0.

Christian Yelich’s two-run bases-loaded single extended the lead to 4-0. Sal Frelick’s RBI groundout made it 5-0 and chased starter Eduardo Rodriguez (5-8), who surrendered six hits and five runs in 2 1/3 innings with one strikeout and one walk.

MLB News: Mark Vientos, Luis Torrens lead Mets to rout of Phillies

Mark Vientos continued his recent resurgence by hitting a tiebreaking RBI double with one out in the fifth inning as the host New York Mets inched closer to first place in the National League East with a 13-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night.

Vientos helped the Mets win for the sixth time in nine games following a 1-10 skid from Aug. 3-15. The Mets moved back within six of the division-leading Phillies thanks to in part Vientos, who is 12-for-31 (.387) in his past eight games.

Vientos keyed a three-run rally in the fourth with a double off Philadelphia’s Cristopher Sanchez (11-5) that scored Pete Alonso to help erase a three-run deficit. He reached base three times and was lifted in the seventh after getting hit by a pitch in the back by Jordan Romano.

An inning later, with the game tied at 3-3 and New York sporting runners at first and second following walks by Starling Marte and Juan Soto, Vientos snapped the tie by lacing a 2-1 changeup down the right field line to score Soto.

Luis Torrens helped the Mets surge further ahead in the seventh with a three-run homer off Romano that gave them a 10-3 lead. Torrens also had an RBI double in the sixth that knocked out Sanchez and a run-scoring single in the eighth as part of his second career five-RBI showing.

He also drove in five on Aug. 14, 2021, for the Seattle Mariners.

Jeff McNeil drove in three runs with a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly as the Mets collected 14 hits and were 11-for-19 with runners in scoring position.

Tyrone Taylor added three hits in the win.

Trea Turner opened the game with a triple and scored on a grounder by Kyle Schwarber. Alec Bohm also had a two-run single in the third but grounded into a double play in the fifth against Jose Castillo, who had just come on for starter Kodai Senga with one on and none out.

After the double-play grounder, Bohm complained to umpires about the glare from a parabolic television microphone in center field and the device was removed after a brief delay. Castillo (1-2) then retired Brandon Marsh after the delay before the Mets went ahead.

After Senga allowed three runs on six hits in four-plus innings, five relievers combined to hurl five scoreless innings.

Sanchez allowed a season-worst six runs (five earned) and tied a season high by permitting eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. The left-hander struck out four and walked three in his shortest outing since May 24.

Storm try for first four-game win streak of season, visit Fever

Coming off a riveting victory, the Seattle Storm will aim for a season-best four-game winning streak when they face the Indiana Fever on Tuesday night in Indianapolis.

Nneka Ogwumike’s buzzer-beating jumper from right inside the free-throw line lifted the Storm (20-18) to an 84-82 victory against the Washington Mystics on Sunday.

“Based on what we had been seeing leading up into that point, (coach Noelle Quinn) was talking about getting (Skylar Diggins) downhill,” Ogwumike said. “That’s something that time and time again has worked for us. But Sky told me when we came out that she anticipated them switching if I slipped. So instead of actually setting the screen, she told me to slip, and that was kind of what we ended up doing, to be able to get not just a shot off, but the last shot off.”

Ogwumike finished with 30 points and six rebounds as the Storm rallied back after giving up a 14-point third-quarter lead. This is the fourth three-game winning streak for the Storm this season.

The Fever (19-18) are coming off a pair of losses in a home-and-away set against the Minnesota Lynx. In the last outing, the Fever fell 97-84 at the Lynx on Sunday, as Aerial Powers made her debut as a hardship waiver pickup in replacement of Sophie Cunningham (MCL). Powers had five points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench.

With seven games left in the regular season, the Fever are now on the bubble for the playoffs as star guard Caitlin Clark (groin/ankle) has been out since being injured July 15. However, Clark took part in non-contact, low impact shootaround drills prior to Sunday’s game, so she appears to be on the right track in her recovery.

“It was a good step because she got out there on the floor with us for the first time, part of the sort of return to activity thing,” Fever head coach Stephanie White said, per the Indy Star.

Indiana has lost six of its last eight games.

The Fever defeated the Storm in the other two matchups this season in Seattle, 94-86 on June 24 and 78-74 on Aug. 3. Natasha Howard led the Fever with 21 points in the most recent contest between the teams.

MLB News: White Sox, Shane Smith shut down Royals

Shane Smith and Tyler Gilbert combined on a two-hit shutout and Korey Lee and Brooks Baldwin smacked back-to-back home runs as the host Chicago White Sox blanked the Kansas City Royals 7-0 on Monday.

Chicago collected seven extra-base hits while securing its third winning streak of at least three games since the All-Star break.

An early barrage boosted the White Sox to just their third win against the Royals in 11 tries. Edgar Quero, Lenyn Sosa and Curtis Mead delivered RBI doubles in a four-hitter span to stake Chicago to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Smith (4-7) seized the support to win for the first time since June 10. The rookie right-hander pitched a career-best seven innings in his 24th start, allowing one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.

Smith retired the first eight Royals he faced before Kyle Isbel reached on a fielding error. Mike Yastrzemski followed with a ground-rule double, but Smith escaped trouble by getting Bobby Witt Jr. to ground out to third to end the third.

Gilbert set down six of seven over the last two innings. Witt Jr.’s two-out double in the ninth was Kansas City’s only other hit.

Royals starter Noah Cameron (7-6) matched a career worst by allowing six earned runs and set a career high by yielding eight hits. The rookie lefty did not record a walk or strikeout.

Lee blasted a two-run home run with two outs in the fourth to extend Chicago’s lead to 5-0. Baldwin followed with a solo shot as the White Sox’s 8-9 hitters victimized Cameron. Recalled Friday from Triple-A Charlotte, Lee went 2-for-3 with a walk. Sosa had two hits and two RBIs, Mead also had two hits and Miguel Vargas doubled twice.

Kansas City left fielder Michael Massey went 0-for-2 in his return to the lineup. Massey missed 65 games with various injuries, including those to his left ankle, right wrist, and back. He hadn’t played since a June 7 road game against the White Sox.

Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino’s team record-tying streak of seven games with an extra-base hit ended as he went 0-for-4.
