MLB News: Jakob Marsee’s record day powers Marlins to rout of Guardians

Jakob Marsee hit two home runs and tied the franchise record with seven RBIs, and Eury Perez remained unbeaten in interleague play as the visiting Miami Marlins routed the Cleveland Guardians 13-4 on Wednesday night.

Marsee, who made his major league debut August 1 against the New York Yankees, had a three-run shot off Gavin Williams in the first inning and a two-run blast against Kolby Allard (2-2) in the fifth. He tacked on a two-run double in the sixth.

The 24-year-old outfielder went 4 for 5 and also stole his sixth base, raising his average to .436. Marsee is the seventh Marlins player to drive in seven runs in a game, the first since Adam Duvall on April 13, 2021, at the Atlanta Braves.

Perez (5-3) worked five innings, giving up four runs on three hits without a walk. The right-hander struck out eight and is 7-0 with a 1.47 ERA in 10 career interleague starts.

Xavier Edwards had a leadoff home run, Agustin Ramirez drove in a pair and Graham Pauley collected four hits, including a two-run homer for Miami, which won for the third time in its last 10 games. National League All-Star Kyle Stowers scored three times.

The Guardians, who are 10-3 since July 29, received a three-run homer from Gabriel Arias and a leadoff shot by Steven Kwan. Allard, Matt Festa and Carlos Hernandez were rocked for nine runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Edwards and Kwan accounted for the seventh time in Marlins history that both teams led off with homers.

Williams allowed four runs on five hits in three innings, striking out four with a walk. The right-hander came within two outs of a no-hitter in his last start at the New York Mets before Juan Soto homered.

Backup catcher Austin Hedges pitched a scoreless ninth for Cleveland. He has a 3.52 ERA in seven career appearances on the mound, the first four coming with the World Series champion Texas Rangers in 2023.

MLB News: Hunter Greene shines in return as Reds shut out Phillies

Hunter Greene returned from a two-month injury stint and tossed six shutout innings while Miguel Andujar stayed red-hot with a grand slam to lead the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-0 win over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday night.

Greene, out since June 3 with a right groin strain, was dominant over the course of his 85-pitch effort, striking out six and walking none.

The right-hander, projected as the ace of the staff at the start of the season, retired the first seven batters he faced before Bryson Stott singled with one out in the third. After a Trea Turner two-out single moved Stott to second, Greene fanned Kyle Schwarber looking to end the threat.

The Reds put the game away with a four-run seventh on Andujar’s third homer in four games, a third career grand slam to the seats in left off reliever Jordan Romano.

The Reds captured the rubber game and won for the fourth time in five games. They welcome the Milwaukee Brewers to town on Friday after their first day off on Thursday since July 24.

Cristopher Sanchez (11-4) allowed four runs – three earned – matching a season-high for a third time this yeafr. The left-hander lost for just the second time in 11 starts since June 8.

The Reds scored once in the fourth on a Noelvi Marte double, scoring Austin Hays. In the sixth, Hays and Marte were at the heart of another two-out rally later when Hays doubled home Elly De La Cruz and then Marte singled home Hays.

Marte’s single turned into a so-called Little League home run when Brandon Marsh threw wildly home to try and throw out Hays. Sanchez threw wildly back to third in an attempt to retire Marte, who came home.

All eight of the Reds’ runs came with two outs.

In losing two of three in Cincinnati, the Phillies had trouble getting the offense on track, scoring just five runs in the series and failing to put a runner on base in the first two innings of all three games.

MLB News: Padres blow past Giants to complete sweep

Jake Cronenworth and Fernando Tatis Jr. contributed two-RBI singles to a seven-run second inning, Nick Pivetta pitched into the seventh for his 12th win of the year, and the San Diego Padres completed a three-game road sweep of the San Francisco Giants with an 11-1 pounding on Wednesday afternoon.

Ramon Laureano had a home run among three hits, while Ryan O’Hearn joined Cronenworth and Tatis with two hits apiece for the Padres, who temporarily took over sole possession of first place in the National League West, pending the Los Angeles Dodgers’ later game against the Los Angeles Angels.

Six consecutive Padres reached base against Giants starter Kai-Wei Teng (1-2) with one out in the second, with Cronenworth’s single making it 2-0 before Tatis’ single doubled the score.

Luis Arraez’s sacrifice fly, a throwing error by Giants left fielder Heliot Ramos after a double by Manny Machado, and a passed ball by catcher Patrick Bailey capped the inning’s scoring.

En route to their fifth straight win, the Padres tacked on three in the fifth on an RBI double by O’Hearn and a two-run homer by Laureano, his 17th. The final tally came in the seventh when Tatis drove in his third run of the game with another single.

Pivetta (12-4) took a shutout into the bottom of the seventh before a triple by Jung Hoo Lee and a sacrifice fly by Christian Koss completed the game’s scoring.

The right-handed Pivetta was pulled at that point, having limited the Giants to four hits. He walked one and struck out five.

Making his third career appearance, Teng was charged with seven runs (six earned) on four hits in 1 2/3 innings. He walked four and didn’t strike out anyone.

Laureano scored three times for the Padres, who have caught and, at least temporarily, passed the Dodgers by winning 14 of their last 17 games. O’Hearn and Xander Bogaerts each scored twice for the visitors.

The double-digit run output was San Diego’s sixth of the season.

Lee’s triple was the only extra-base hit by the Giants, who were held to one run for the third straight time in the series. San Francisco has lost five straight.

The Padres out-hit the Giants 14-5 in the game and 34-20 in the series.

MLB News: Diamondbacks place RHP Anthony DeSclafani (thumb) on 15-day injured list

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-hander Anthony DeSclafani on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday because of inflammation in his right thumb.

In a corresponding move, Arizona recalled right-hander Casey Kelly from Triple-A Reno.

DeSclafani, 35, last pitched on Tuesday, lasting three innings and allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in a 3-2 victory over the host Texas Rangers in Arlington.

He is 1-2 with two saves, a 4.36 ERA, 11 walks and 31 strikeouts in 33 innings over 11 games (four starts) since signing as a free agent with Arizona on June 15, three days after he opted out of his minor-league deal with the New York Yankees.

For his career, DeSclafani is 55-58 with two saves, a 4.21 ERA, 262 walks and 861 strikeuts in 975 2/3 innings over 191 regular-season games (173 starts) for the Miami Marlins (2014), Cincinnati Reds (2015-16, 2018-20), San Francisco Giants (2021-23) and Diamondbacks.

Kelly, 35, has pitched 1 2/3 innings in two relief appearances for Arizona this season, allowing one hit, one walk and no runs. He was 2-5 with a 5.82 ERA, 33 walks and 42 strikeouts in 85 innings over 18 games (14 starts) at Reno.

MLB News: Pirates place OF Oneil Cruz on 7-day concussion list

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed outfielder Oneil Cruz on the seven-day concussion injured list on Wednesday following his collision in the outfield during a loss to the host Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.

Center fielder Cruz, 26, ran into left fielder Jack Suwinski while attempting to catch Joey Ortiz’s double in the fourth inning of Milwaukee’s 14-0 victory. Cruz was removed from the game in the top of the sixth inning.

In a corresponding move, Pittsburgh recalled rookie outfielder Ronny Simon from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Cruz is batting .207 in 108 games with 18 home runs, 51 RBIs and a National League-leading 34 stolen bases in 38 attempts. The native of the Dominican Republic is in his fifth season with the Pirates since making his major league debut in October 2021 and has a career .237 average with 58 homers, 188 RBIs and 69 steals in 352 games.

Pittsburgh selected Simon, 25, off waivers from the Miami Marlins on June 2. The native of the Dominican Republic batted .234 (11-for-47) with five RBIs in 19 games for Miami this season.

MLB News: Ketel Marte’s late homer gives D-backs series win over Rangers

Ketel Marte ripped a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth as the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to stun the Texas Rangers 6-4 on Wednesday in the finale of a three-game series in Arlington, Texas.

Marte’s home run off Phil Maton (2-4) was his fourth hit of the game and drove in Blaze Alexander, who was hit by a pitch, and Geraldo Perdomo, who had walked. James McCann triggered the two-out rally with a solo home run as the Diamondbacks scored four runs in the final frame to capture their second straight series.

It was Marte’s second game-winning homer in as many nights as his ninth-inning homer on Tuesday lifted Arizona to a 3-2 comeback win. John Curtiss (2-0) pitched the eighth for the Diamondbacks and Andrew Saalfrank retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to earn his first career save.

Arizona starter Zac Gallen went five innings and allowed five hits and three runs with two walks and one strikeout. Rangers starter Merrill Kelly, who was acquired from Arizona at the trade deadline, lasted six innings and gave up seven hits and two runs. He fanned five and walked one in his first appearance.

Texas finished its nine-game homestand with just three victories. Jake Burger had a two-run homer among his two hits while Evan Carter also had two of the Rangers’ seven hits.

Texas jumped to the lead in its first at bat when Carter, activated from the 10-day injured list just prior to the game, singled home Josh Smith after he opened the frame with a single.

The Diamondbacks answered in the third with a two-out rally as Perdomo walked and stole second base before Marte drove him in with a single to left.

Carter was also a huge part of the Rangers’ next uprising, beginning the fourth with a double and then trotting home in front of Burger after the latter smashed his two-run homer.

Arizona trimmed its deficit to 3-2 in the fifth on a Perdomo solo home run to right center. The Diamondbacks created a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the inning as Marte and Corbin Carroll singled, but Marte was thrown out at home on Adrian Del Castillo’s single to right to end the inning.

After that, the Diamondbacks did not have a hit and had just one baserunner until McCann homered with two outs in the ninth to cut the Texas lead to 4-3. That opened the floodgates and led to Arizona’s stunning win.

MLB News: Brewers finish strong over Pirates to win 12th straight game

William Contreras drove in four runs and Christian Yelich three more in the host Milwaukee Brewers’ 12-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.

It was the Brewers’ 12th consecutive win, which is the second time in franchise history the team has won at least 12 in a row. Milwaukee has also won 27 of its last 31 games.

Bryan Reynolds homered twice and drove in all five runs for the Pirates, who lost their fifth straight.

Reliever Jared Koenig (5-1) got the win with a scoreless inning.

Milwaukee starter Brandon Woodruff allowed four hits in four innings with two walks and four strikeouts. He threw 65 pitches.

Pittsburgh starter Mitch Keller (5-11) took the loss, giving up six runs and eight hits in four innings with two walks and five strikeouts.

Contreras’ two-run single in the sixth stretched the Brewers’ lead to 8-5.

Milwaukee added four in the seventh on Joey Ortiz’ run-scoring single, Contreras’ bases-loaded walk, and Yelich’s two-run single.

Reynolds’ second homer of the game and 13th of the season pulled the Pirates to within 6-5. He drove Nick Mears’ 1-2 pitch over the fence in right field with two out.

Reynolds’ first home run, a three-run shot in the fifth, halved the deficit to 6-3 for Pittsburgh. It came off of reliever Shelby Miller.

The Brewers took a 2-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Sal Frelick and a two-out, run-scoring single from Yelich.

Milwaukee scored four runs with two out in the fourth to make it 6-0.

Ortiz had an RBI single, Frelick a run-scoring double, Isaac Collins an RBI double and Contreras a run-producing single.

Woodruff got out of two on, two-out situations in each of the first three innings.

He escaped a first-and-third jam in the first by getting Nick Gonzales on a ground out and then a second-and-third scenario in the second by striking out Ronny Simon. And in the third Woodruff got Jack Suwinski on a called third strike with runners on first and second.

Rockies starter Austin Gomber allowed five runs on nine hits in five innings. He struck out two and walked one.

Alec Burleson hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who lost for the fourth time in six games against the Rockies this season. Pedro Pages drove in two runs and Lars Nootbaar homered and scored twice.

Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked none.

JoJo Romero (4-4) allowed Goodman’s blast and took the loss.

The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Nootbaar and Thomas Saggese hit two-out singles and scored on Pages’ double.

The Rockies cut their deficit to 2-1 in the fourth inning on singles by Tyler Freeman, Moniak and Ezequiel Tovar.

Nootbaar’s homer in the bottom of the inning increased the Cardinals’ lead to 3-1.

Colorado struck again in the fifth inning. Kyle Karros hit a single, went to third on Yanquiel Fernandez’s single, and scored on Fulford’s groundout to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Cardinals upped their margin to 5-2 during the bottom of the inning. Masyn Winn hit a single and Burleson followed with his homer.

Moniak’s sixth-inning homer cut St. Louis’ lead to 5-3. Colorado narrowed the margin to 5-4 in the seventh inning when Karros led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Fulford’s sacrifice fly.

Colorado rallied for a 6-5 lead in the ninth inning on a walk to Karros and Goodman’s one-out, pinch-hit homer.

MLB News: Nationals score early and late to hold off Royals

Daylen Lile went 2-for-5, including the go-ahead RBI, to help the Washington Nationals avoid a sweep with an 8-7 win against the host Kansas City Royals on Wednesday.

The rookie outfielder knocked a line-drive single off reliever Carlos Estevez (4-5) in the top of the ninth to drive in Luis Garcia Jr.

Nationals reliever Jose Ferrer (4-3) held the Royals scoreless in 1 1/3 innings in the eighth and ninth to earn the win.

Kansas City tied the game 7-7 in the eighth. Pinch runner Tyler Tolbert stole second and third and scored on Bobby Witt Jr.’s sacrifice fly.

After its five-run lead was cut to two in the second, Washington added insurance over the next two innings. In the third, Lile reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored on a Brady House single to make it 6-3.

CJ Abrams pushed the advantage to 7-3 in the fourth with a lead-off solo shot just inside the right field pole.

The Royals tightened the gap in the bottom of the fourth. With Mike Yastrzemski (walk) and Witt (hit by pitch) on base, Vinnie Pasquantino belted a changeup 410 feet to right field to narrow the deficit to 7-6.

The Nationals opened the scoring in the first inning against Royals right-hander Seth Lugo. James Wood singled, Abrams walked, Garcia reached on a force-out and Josh Bell walked to load the bases. That brought up Nathaniel Lowe, who then mashed a grand slam to right field to give the visitors a 4-0 lead.

They added another to make it 5-0 when Drew Millas connected for a double that drove in Lile.

Kansas City narrowed the deficit in the bottom half of the first. Yastrzemski walked, Witt singled, and each moved up a base on Jake Irvin’s wild pitch with Pasquantino at the plate. Yastrzemski scored on Pasquantino’s groundout to cut it to 5-1 and Adam Frazier’s single brought in Witt to make it 5-2.

The hosts pulled within 5-3 in the second. John Rave opened with a single and, after a walk and groundout moved him to third, he came around on a single from Witt.

Both starters went four innings, with Washington right-hander Irvin giving up six runs on seven hits and four walks with three strikeouts, and Kansas City’s Lugo allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits and four walks with two strikeouts.

MLB News: Tigers shut out White Sox on combined 2-hitter

Troy Melton and three relievers combined on a two-hit shutout and Wenceel Perez contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly to help the Detroit Tigers defeat the host Chicago White Sox 1-0 on Wednesday.

White Sox pitching limited the Tigers to just five hits, but Detroit capitalized to earn a three-game series victory.

Will Vest notched his 18th save with a perfect ninth. Sawyer Gipson-Long and Kyle Finnegan pitched after Melton, with Finnegan issuing Detroit’s lone walk.

Melton and fellow rookie right-hander Shane Smith of Chicago dueled for the first five innings. Smith allowed two hits and three walks with five strikeouts while throwing 56 of his 92 pitches for strikes.

Melton (3-1) yielded just one hit and struck out six with zero walks, throwing strikes on 43 of 56 pitches.

Smith worked around two-out singles in each of the first two innings as well as walks in the third, fourth and fifth but kept the Tigers off the scoreboard.

Melton matched Smith’s effectiveness to set a brisk pace. Starting for the first time since July 28 against Arizona, he retired the first 12 batters he faced, including three by strikeout. Luis Robert Jr. spoiled the run when he doubled to lead off the fifth, but Melton recovered, escaping trouble with swinging strikeouts of Andrew Benintendi, Miguel Vargas and Edgar Quero.

Detroit broke through against White Sox reliever Martin Perez in the sixth. After loading the bases on a single, double and walk, the Tigers got on the board when Wenceel Perez hit an RBI sacrifice fly to the warning track in left-center.

Kerry Carpenter, who scored the lone run, had two hits for Detroit.

Martin Perez (1-2) took the loss, allowing one run and three hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four.

The game was played in 2 hours, 19 minutes. That came on the heels of Tuesday’s 9-6 Chicago victory, which took 3 hours, 23 minutes and marked Detroit’s longest nine-inning game since the pitch clock was initiated in 2023.

Detroit won for the seventh time in 10 meetings with Chicago to clinch the season series.

The White Sox fell to 9-27 in one-run games.
