Google’s Super App A WakeUp Call For Other Apps

0

Last week, a new, redesigned Google Pay was introduced with a lot of the functionality and user interface that consumers had said that they would find appealing in a super app. Google had asked consumers what would be their expectations in a super app almost eighteen months ago, in June 2019.

The Google Pay app focuses on three major activities in one place:

  • Paying friends and businesses
  • Finding offers and rewards across its ecosystem
  • Getting insights on consumer spending

The app integrates Plex accounts adding a banking layer that has products created by credit unions and banks.

Google Pay allows its 150 million users to redeem discount offers via a tap in the app (through an Explorer tab). The offers and promotions are automatically added whether online or in-store.

Google has taken a “privacy-forward design. It will not sell data or transactions history with third parties or the rest of Google for ad targeting. Consumers can choose whether they want to turn on the personalization setting. It is off by default.

It’s too early to predict the trajectory of Google Pay, whether it’s super enough to launch itself as a super app. It has succeeded, however, in setting a high bar for others to follow, especially Apple, who’s ecosystem will soon look outdated as Google Pays can probably take off to great heights as it gets popular day by day.

This app of apps works across operating systems, channels and devices. It can be activated either by voice or by SMS.

Best Black Friday Travel Deals Despite The Pandemic

0

The travel and leisure industry encountered a lot of turbulence during the pandemic. Profits plunged and their economies plummeted to the lowest levels ever. Yet, the industry has offered flexible deals on Black Friday.

“Make sure to prioritize flexibility alongside price this year. Look for airline and lodging deals that have waived change and cancellation fees, should plans change,” Kelly Soderlund, a travel trend expert, told Fox.

He added, “Many travel providers are offering credits instead of refunds, so determine a backup plan if the trip is canceled. The financial implications of travel credits could impact the when and where of an alternative trip.”

Some of the deals are as follows:

  • Expedia is offering 50% of select stays and an extra 12% off select hotels and activities
  • Marriott is offering up to 20% off at over 5000 hotels and 25% off to its Bonvoy members
  • Cheap Caribbean website is offering up to 75% off on its properties for beach vacations
  • Regent Seven Seas if offering a $500 credit for cruises through the Mediterranean and Northern Europe in 2021
  • Norwegian Cruise Lines is offering 30% off for voyages from 2021 to 2023
  • Carnival is offering 30% off any cruise fare before 2023

Most of these bookings must be made today or up to the end of the month depending on the terms and conditions available on their websites.

COVID-19 Hits Theme Parks: Walt Disney To LayOff 32,000 Staff

0

Yet another traditional business model is sinking with the spread of the coronavirus. Walt Disney will be laying off 32,000 staff who primarily worked in their theme parks. The pandemic has delivered a huge blow to the entertainment industry and Disney announced a second consecutive quarterly loss. These losses are mainly due to the loss of business from theme parks and movies which have been adversely impacted due to lockdowns and the need for social distancing.

With the US bearing brunt of the pandemic, the Company is unsure when it will be able to reopen its Disneyland theme park. This park, in Anaheim, California has been closed from March 2020.

In Wednesday’s filing, the company said that it was looking at additional measures to cut costs including suspension of capital spending and implementing furloughs. It was also considering the reduction of film and content investments.

“Some of these measures may have an adverse impact on our businesses,” the company warned.

“With the unknown duration of COVID-19 and yet to be determined timing of the phased reopening of certain businesses, it is not possible to precisely estimate the impact of Covid-19 on our operations in future quarters,” the company said.

Disney’s direct-to-consumer business is one bright spot as subscriptions to Disney+ reached 73.7 million on October 3, showing an increase of 60 million from August.

Black Friday In The Pandemic: The Dominant Thrive, The Rest Hang On

0

The pandemic has played spoilsport to in-store sales including huge retail stores who have had to close down many iconic brick and mortar stores. However retailers with strong online business models have thrived way beyond expectations.

Traditionally, holiday shopping has revolved around Black Friday with stores offering huge discounts on this day. Queues of shopping waiting to enter stores stretch for miles and deals disappear within seconds as there’s a clamor to pick the best deals.

This year brick and mortar stores have suffered closure, both temporary and permanent due to the lockdown and dwindling footfalls. Large online retailers like Amazon and Walmart have had bullish sales and their sales figures have been breaking all records. Meanwhile brick and mortar stores have been transformed into fulfillment centers rather than department stores.

The trade group National Retail Federation said that about 59% holiday shopping began early November and a large part of this was online. They expect E-commerce sales to grow by 30% when compared with last year’s sales.

Stores are still hoping to get Black Friday crowds this year. Many large retail stores, like Walmart and Best Buy, who also have a robust online presence, are offering fantastic deals in stores. Shops are scheduled to open at 5am.

Holiday shoppers should also browse through smaller websites and online stores like iParis and organic greek to pick once in a year excellent deals.

Eco Warrior Child Greta Thunberg Says She’s “Honoured” to be Investigated by Amazon

0

Greta Thunberg, a young, iconic eco-activist said that she felt “honoured” that the retail giant Amazon considered her environmental activism as a threat to their business. The 17 year old is a tireless campaigner who brings awareness of the disastrous affects of climate change worldwide.

The young activist asked Amazon to “reconsider its priorities” following leaked reports that showed its “obsessive monitoring of organized labor and social and environmental movements.”

Leaked internal reports dated 2019 show that the giant retailer kept tabs on social justice groups including Thunberg’s Fridays4future climate group.

Fridays4future is a student group. It consists of students who skip one day of school, most often a Friday, and take part in protests that demand increased global action on climate change. This vocal group of students are active worldwide and have garnered support from different parts of the globe.

The reports, seen by Motherboard, state that her movement is “increasing their influence especially on young people and students” and “growing and attracting more and more people rapidly.”

Greta Thunberg shared the media coverage of the report on Twitter. She posted, “We’re very honored by this! But in all fairness, if you consider schoolchildren fighting for the right to a safe future to be a “threat to your business,” then you seriously need to reconsider your priorities.”

AstraZeneca Error In COVID-19 Trials May Halt FDA Approval

0

AstraZeneca has admitted that a mistake had been made in the coronavirus trials conducted by the company. This has caused a certain amount of confusion as well as a drop in its share prices as reports say that this may hamper its FDA early approval.

AstraZeneca had created waves initially by saying that its vaccine would be much cheaper than the ones developed by Pfizer and Moderna as well as it would be easier to store.

However the UK pharmaceutical company, along with its partner Oxford University, said that a mistake had been made. After getting 90% positive results, they realized that a batch of the volunteers had been given half doses but showed better results than the main group of volunteers who were given the correct two doses but showed 62% efficacy.

Natalie Dean, a biostatistician and expert in vaccine trial design from the University of Florida wrote, “It is awfully confusing for experts and non experts alike.” She gave Team UK vaccine “a poor grade for transparency and rigor,” on Twitter.

Analysts and scientists alike have been disappointed with the handling of the issue as well as the mistake though the lead researcher at AstraZeneca called it “serendipity.”

A spokesperson for AstraZeneca Michele Meixell said that the trials were conducted “to the highest standard,” and added that more analysis is being carried out to refine the efficacy results.

Green Bean Casserole Recipe For Thanksgiving

0

As Thanksgiving morning dawns, preparations are afoot. The stuffing is given a few last minute touches and perhaps a secret ingredient or two is added as per a family recipe. The turkey or any bird has to be stuffed and baked slowly. Amidst all these preparations it is possible to overlook one of the simplest, yet often underrated side dish. I am talking about the humble, yet tasty and nutritious green bean casserole.

This crunchy and creamy dish is easy to make. Just follow the recipe below:

Ingredients

1 can cream of mushroom soup

4 cups cut, cooked green beans

1/2 cup milk

A dash of black pepper

1 tsp soy sauce

1 1/3 cup fried onions

Method

Via   Campbell’s

  1. Stir the soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, beans and 2/3 cups onions in a 1 1/2-quart casserole.
  2. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 25 minutes or till the bean mixture bubbles. Stir it and sprinkle the remaining onions.
  3. Bake for an additional 5 minutes or until the onions are golden brown.

Serve with a dollop of love.

This recipe is simple and easy to make. You can make simple variations such as substituting soy sauce with cheese, change the soup flavor from mushroom to asparagus or even change the vegetable from beans to broccoli.

Megan Fox & Brian Austin Green To Divorce: Fox Files Papers

This Wednesday, the   night before Thanksgiving, Megan Fox filed for divorce from her estranged husband Brian Austen Green in LA. The couple have had a roller coaster marriage these past ten years and have 3 sons. Both of them have been airing dirty linen in public and taking pot shots at each other on pictures on Instagram,

When he posted pictures of their sons on Halloween, she charged him with “feeding the pervasive narrative that I am an absent mother, and you are the perennial, eternally dedicated dad of the year.” He subsequently cropped the picture, to remove images of their sons. She posted an Instagram picture of her with her latest beau rapper Machine Gun Kelley, which drew adverse comments from him.

TMZ also reports that the 34-year old “Transformers” actress is seeking joint legal and physical custody of their three children: Noah Shannon 8, Bodhi Ransom 6, and Journey River 4. She asks for the ability to forestall spousal support for both of them.

TMZ also contacted 47-year old “Beverly Hills 90210” actor Green who agreed with most of her requests. However, he would like spousal support to be discussed.

The couple have also filed different dates of separation. While Megan says that they separated in November 2019, Green says that the split was on March 5, 2020

Walmart Restocks PS5 & Xbox Series X: Stocks Sold Out In 2 Minutes

0

Walmart restocked both PS5 game consoles and Xbox Series X from Sony and Microsoft on Wednesday 9 pm ET. By 9:02 pm, all stocks were sold out. Walmart had indicated that its Black Friday sales of PS5 and Xbox Series X would be only available online. Preorders had also sold out very quickly. So Walmart had indicated that it would restock these consoles before Black Friday.

The listings say that the consoles are “temporarily” out of stock. There is no indication to when there would be a restock. However, it is confirmed that even after possible restocks, the consoles will be available only online. Actually, Walmart stores will remain closed on Thanksgiving.

Many gamers and shoppers have missed out on the pre-sales of these consoles from some large retailers. However, there could be consoles available in-store as well online with other retailers. Customers have to stay home, browse a lot and be quick in payments to get one of these consoles. One of the main reasons for online shopping was to increase safety and promote social distancing on Black Friday as the coronavirus has been spreading across the US.

Keep browsing and you may find a   good black Friday deal at GameStop, Best Buy, Walmart or Amazon. Who knows what’s in store for you?

The History Of Thanksgiving In The United States Of America

0

Humans through ancient and modern civilizations have been giving thanks to the Almighty from time immemorial. In the US, it was President Abraham Lincoln who declared Thanksgiving to be a national holiday. Attempts to change it have failed and it remains the third Thursday in November, each year.

The modern Thanksgiving holiday can be traced to two major events that occurred in 1619 in Virginia and 1621 at Plymouth (now called Massachusetts). There is a fierce ongoing debate between the states as to which state can be called its birthplace.

In 1619, 38 English settlers at Charles City County, Virginia conducted a religious celebration as per orders by the group’s charter from the London company “that the day of our ships arrival at the place assigned…in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and perpetually kept holy as a day of thanksgiving to Almighty God.”

The second feast, which is better known and more generally accepted, is the one that took place in 1621 in Plymouth. After the Mayflower landed in 1620, the Pilgrims suffered through a brutal winter and only half the crew and passengers survived till Spring.

When they ventured ashore they were welcomed by an Abernaki Native American who spoke English. He returned with Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe, who not only spoke English but also helped them to grow corn, to fish in rivers and to make friends with the local Wampanoag tribe.

After a bountiful harvest in the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims shared their harvest in a feast with the tribe and this was deemed as the first Thanksgiving. Unfortunately it proved detrimental to the native tribes as they lost their health as well as a lot of their land to the settlers.

From 1970 some members of Native American tribes celebrate this day as a “National Day of Mourning,” at Cole’s Hill, near Plymouth Rock and at various other places around the nation.Source Newsweek
