Selena Gomez Quits Hillsong After Pastor Carl Lentz’s Cheating Scandal

In an apparent shock for fans, reports have surfaced that singer Selena Gomez has quit Hillsong. After being an ardent follower for years, her decision to leave the church has come as a surprise but perhaps not such a big one after pastor Carl Lentz’s cheating scandal recently surfaced, according to the Daily Telegraph.

She had begun distancing herself from the church after her breakup with ex Justin Bieber. Sources claimed that she had been “bitterly disillusioned” with the church after their breakup. Bieber and his wife Hailey are still members of the church.

The reported final straw was Carl Lentz’s affair. An insider said, “At one stage she adored Carl…she, Brian, his daughter Laura and Justin were a team, really close. Now she doesn’t want anything to do with Hillsong anymore. She doesn’t identify with Hillsong any longer.”

Lentz had been fired from the church due to “moral failures”, which was later revealed to be cheating on his wife. They have been married for 17 years and have three children. They have moved from the East Coast to LA, in an attempt to save their marriage.

Ranin Karim, 34, a New York fashion designer, went public after he was fired, admitting she was the one who had been with Lentz. However, after this, allegations have surfaced that there were other affairs as well.

“It was more than one affair; they were significant. And at least some bad moral behavior had gone back historically, but not necessarily those affairs,” Hillsong founder Brian Houston had said in a recorded meeting. This was leaked to the Daily Mail.

Joe Biden’s Victory in the U.S. Elections 2020 Officially Affirmed by the Electoral College

0

After weeks of drama, posturing and legal cases by President Donald Trump and some of his Republicans, the Electoral College finally affirmed Joe Biden’s victory.

The process began at 10 am when electors in New Hampshire gave their four votes to Joseph R. Biden Jr. By Monday noon battleground states including Arizona, Pennsylvania and Georgia also officially endorsed Biden, followed by New York.

When California added its 55 votes for Mr. Biden his electoral tally crossed the threshold of 270 Electoral College votes required to win the presidency. This put the official seal on his victory. All the efforts of President Trump and some of his fellow Republicans using legal challenges and political pressure finally came to naught.

President elect Joe Biden called for unity. He said “it is time to turn the page” on the election. He praised the officials who maintained the integrity of the system. He said, “It was honest, it was free, and it was fair. They saw it with their own eyes. And they wouldn’t be bullied into saying anything different.”

Despite the turmoil created by President Trump and some his supporters, Mr. Biden’s victory was a staid and formal affair, devoid of unnecessary drama, as is the norm. Monday’s voting went smoothly. The entire country and most of its representatives are looking forward to a peaceful transition of power on January 20, 2021.

Charlotte Hornets’ Rookie LaMelo Ball Scores His First NBA Points in Preseason Game with Toronto Raptors

0

The Charlotte Hornets prospects in preseason games seem to be quite promising, especially that of their forward Jalen McDaniels.

Although the Hornets lost their second match 112-109 against the Toronto Raptors on Monday December 14, they were in better shape than their last game. This was their second loss in a row at Spectrum Center, though they still had a slew of turnovers 25, compared to 23 in their Saturday game.

Some important points about their game and performance:

LaMelo Ball Played a Better Game

Rookie Lamelo Ball made a 3-pointer in the first quarter. He was calmer. He played a better game on Monday with 12 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists in 20 minutes.

Jalen McDaniels has Progressed

Jalen McDaniels has bulked up to finally look and play like an NBA player in the first half. Scoring 12 points in 10 minutes, he made two 3-point attempts and two rebounds.

Center Mix Is Working Well

Bismack Biyombo may play more as he gets going in transition, and becomes a target for Lamelo Ball’s length-of-court one-handed passes. Cody Zelleris slowly finding his way back to the game. Biyombo is re-building himself as a veteran mentor and has formed a bond with Ball.

Coach James Borrego spoke about this connection and said, “I love what I’m seeing there, the partnership, the mentorship. That’s huge for LaMelo and his growth.”

Malik Monk Has Returned to the Team

Monk had been away due to a positive COVID-19 test. He returned to the game in the second half on Monday.

“His conditioning is a work-in-progress. Obviously, he is still recovering (but) he’s getting there,” Borrego said of Monk.

Minutes Mix Changes

Borrego said that he would probably play primary playing combinations throughout the preseason games.

“My gut says now I’ve got to play these guys a little bit more,” he said at Orlando. “We haven’t played in nine months. We haven’t played together. This is all new for us…My guess is our (main) guys will play all four games going forward.”

Shia LaBeouf Accused of Abuse by Sia Following Lawsuit Filed by FKA twigs

0

Sia, who had collaborated with Shia LaBeouf on a music video in 2015 for her hit “Elastic Heart,” has accused him of “relentless abuse” during their relationship.

“I too have been hurt emotionally by Shia, a pathological liar, who conned me into an adulterous relationship claiming to be single,” Sia alleged while responding to FKA twigs posts on Saturday. “I believe he’s very sick and have compassion for him AND his victims. Just know, if you love yourself- stay safe, stay away.”

In a second post, she added “Also I love you @FKAtwigs. This is very courageous and I’m very proud of you.”

EW reached out to representatives for both Sia and Shia for comments about their relationship but has not as yet received any clarifications.

However, Transformers star, Shia LaBeouf, emailed the New York Times who had broken FKAtwigs alleged accounts of abuse and her lawsuit.

“I’m not in any position to tell anyone how my behavior made them feel,” he told the Times on Thursday. “I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalizations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I’m ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say.”

He also sent a follow-up email about the lawsuit.

Cyber Attack on U.S. Government Computer Systems, Russian Mastermind Suspected

The computer systems U.S. Treasury Department have been attacked by hackers, and it is the work of Russian hackers working for the Kremlin, reports say.   The hacking has taken place in the Treasury and Commerce departments’ systems.

There is every possibility that this attack has been there for several months before it was detected, say U.S. officials and media reports.

The U.S. government, acknowledging the breach, revealed that investigations are under way for a full assessment.

The hackers are supposed to have broken into the email systems at the Treasury and Commerce departments. However, the full extent of the breach is being assessment amidst fears of the extent of the penetration. The hackers may have penetrated other government departments as well and there is fear that private companies may also be under the radar.

The National Security Council and the Department of Homeland Security provided few details about the cyber attack.

“We have been working closely with our agency partners regarding recently discovered activity on government networks,” said NSC spokesman John Ullyot. “The United States government is aware of these reports, and we are taking all necessary steps to identify and remedy any possible issues related to this situation.”

Though the U.S. government has not mentioned Russia or any other party in the attack, Russia’s SVR had been blamed in the cyber attack that had taken place in 2014-15, when unclassified email systems at the State Department, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the White House.

An emergency directive was called for and all federal civilian agencies were asked to review their computer networks for any signs of the compromise. They were asked to disconnect from all SolarWinds Orion products immediately.

Reports say that the hackers have used a “supply chain attack” method that embeds malicious code into software updates.

“The compromise of SolarWinds’ Orion Network Management Products poses unacceptable risks to the security of federal networks,” CISA’s Acting Director Brandon Wales said in a statement. “Tonight’s directive is intended to mitigate potential compromises within federal civilian networks, and we urge all our partners – in the public and private sectors – to assess their exposure to this compromise and to secure their networks against any exploitation.”

SolarWinds, based in Austin, Texas, put out its own statement saying it was aware that its systems were experiencing a “highly sophisticated, manual supply chain attack” on certain versions of its Orion platform software that it had released between March and June of 2020.

“We have been advised this attack was likely conducted by an outside nation-state and intended to be a narrow, extremely targeted, and manually executed attack, as opposed to a broad, system-wide attack,” the company said.

Kevin Thompson, SolarWinds president and CEO, said in a statement shared with NPR that the company is “acting in close coordination with FireEye, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the intelligence community, and other law enforcement to investigate these matters. As such, we are limited as to what we can share at this time.”

Russia has denied any involvement in the current cyber attack.

“As for the rest, if there have been attacks for many months, and the Americans could not do anything about it, it is probably not worth immediately groundlessly blaming the Russians. We didn’t have anything to do with it,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Bill Gates Forecasts COVID-19 Lockdowns Will Remain Until 2022

On Sunday, the billionaire Microsoft founder  Bill Gates voiced his predictions regarding the COVID-19 Lockdowns. During an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, he revealed that he expects the lockdowns will continue into 2022 and restaurants will remain closed for the next six months.

His statement follows the new wave of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths reported in the U.S. in the past week.

When asked how bad he thinks the COVID-19 crisis before vaccines become widely available, Gates said: ‘Well, sadly, the next four to six months could be the worst of the epidemic.

‘Forecast shows over 200,000 additional deaths. If we would follow the rules in terms of wearing masks and not mixing, we could avoid a large percentage of those deaths. So in the near term, it’s bad news.’

He has also signaled his support for drastic restrictions, which includes the stay-at-home order from the California Governor Gavin Newsom.

‘Well certainly mask-wearing has essentially no downsides,’ Gates said. ‘Bars and restaurants in most of the country will be closed as we go into this wave, and I think sadly that’s appropriate.’

‘You don’t want somebody you love to be the last to die of coronavirus,’ he added.

‘Tradeoffs will have to be made, but the next four to six months really call on us to do our best because we can see that this will end,’ he said.

To Tapper’s question, ‘When do you think life will fully return to what we thought of as normal back in January? No masks, no social distancing, no other protective measures necessary.’

Gates replied: ‘Certainly, by the summer we will be way closer to normal than we are now – but even through early 2022, unless we help other countries get rid of this disease and we get high vaccinations rates in our country, the risk of reintroduction will be there.

‘And, of course, the global economy will be slowed down, which hurts America economically in a pretty dramatic way.

‘So we will have, starting in the summer, about nine months where a few things like big public gatherings will still be restricted.

‘But we can see now that somewhere between 12 to 18 months, we have a chance, if we manage it well, to get back to normal.’

Tapper mentioned how the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced a new $250million pledge to fight the pandemic, in addition to the $1billion that it has previously rolled out.

According to Gates, the funding would be for creating vaccines around the world.

Tapper cited the from Pew Research Center poll that reveals that only 60% of Americans intend to get vaccinated, asking: ‘How worried are you about the reluctance of Americans to take a vaccine, particularly among minority communities?’

‘I think we have a real communications challenge that you’ve got to find out who do people trust, make sure they have got the data,’ Gates replied.

‘I hope as people see it – this   vaccine rolled out and reducing the death rate, reducing transmission to people you care about, that that 60 percent number will go up.

‘The track record will be developed and I think we will get over the 70 percent that should reduce the transmission dramatically.’

Gates intends to join several other American leaders in taking the vaccine publicly in an effort to help convince people that it is safe to get vaccinated.

‘When my turn comes up, I will visibly take the vaccine because I think that it’s a benefit to all people to not be transmitting,’ he said.

To Tapper’s concluding question: ‘How do you think history will ultimately judge the US response to the pandemic?’

‘Well, the US would have been expected to be the best,’ Gates said. ‘Sadly, before the epidemic, in the first two or three months of the epidemic, we didn’t get on top of it like many countries did.

‘Figuring out where we need to change things, these postmortems the next year, will guide us, but it’s a tragedy we weren’t able to respond like we could have.’

Pfizer’s COVID-19 Vaccine Gains Singapore’s Approval: Expects First Doses End December

0

The giant pharmaceutical Pfizer and its partner BioNTech have gained one more important client worldwide as Singapore approves of its vaccine.

On Monday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that his country would be receiving the shots by the year end and that he would be one of the early receivers of the vaccine.

“My colleagues and I, including the older ones, will be getting ourselves vaccinated early. This is to show you, especially seniors like me, that we believe the vaccines are safe,” Lee said in a broadcast.

Authorities also said that the country had signed purchase agreements with major vaccine producers well in advance and had also advanced early down payments to vaccine developers who showed promise such as Moderna and Sinovac. They also said that the government has kept aside more than a billion dollars for vaccines.

“We have acquired sufficient doses of all the vaccines for all Singaporeans and long-term residents,” the health ministry’s  director of medical briefing, Kenneth Mak, informed media at a recent briefing.

Prime Minister Lee also said that they would lift a few curbs put in place during the pandemic. From December 28, groups of eight will be allowed to get together in public, the earlier limit being five.

Singapore has had a tally of over 58,000 cases, out of which only 29 people died. This is one of the lowest fatality rates, worldwide. According to a Reuters tally, over 70 million people around the world have been infected by the coronavirus and there have been 1.61 million deaths.

Ambrose Dlamini, PM of Eswatini First World Leader to Die From COVID-19

0

The Prime Minister of Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, has died. He tested positive for the coronavirus four weeks ago and a government statement confirmed the death of their 52-year-old leader. He had been undergoing treatment in South Africa, a neighboring country, from December 1, and passed away on Sunday.

“Their majesties have commanded that I inform the nation of the sad and untimely passing away of His Excellency the Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini. His Excellency passed on this afternoon, while under medical care in a hospital in South Africa,” Deputy Prime Minister Themba Masuku said in a statement.

Although the exact cause of his death as COVID-19 is not mentioned, on November 16, he had tested positive for coronavirus. He was initially asymptomatic. After some time, it was announced that he was going to a medical hospital in South Africa to “guide and fast track his recovery,” and was said to be stable. It was also said that he was responding to treatment.

Although several leaders across the world including President Donald Trump of the U.S., Prime Minister Boris Johnson of the UK and President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil have tested positive for the virus in the past all of them have recovered. Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo is the first world leader to die after contracting the coronavirus, while in office.

UK and EU Continue Trade Talks but Indicate Likelihood of ‘no-deal Brexit’

0

Despite willingness to continue with trade talks beyond the earlier announced Sunday deadline, UK and EU officials warned that a ‘no-deal Brexit’ is quite likely.

The meeting between President Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission, and Boris Johnson, the UK Prime Minister, was billed as a “last-ditch effort,” but it ended without an agreement between the two countries.

On Sunday, the official have not announced any new deadline, but the European Commission President has revealed that it was “responsible” to go “the extra-mile,” adding that she had “constructive and useful” phone call with Prime Minister Johnson.

Speaking in London, Prime Minister Johnson said that both remain “far apart on key issues,” and cautioned that “the most likely thing now is we have to get ready for WTO terms, Australia terms.”

The phrase “Australia terms” has been widely used by Prime Minister Johnson and his government as an euphemism for a no-deal Brexit. However, the phrase comes with a misleading thread. This is because the two countries already have a Mutual Recognition Agreement in place, which makes it comparatively easy for the manufacturers to obtain regulatory approvals needed to sell their goods. However, no such agreement exists between the UK and the EU.

If there is no deal agreed on, EU will need to trade with the bloc based on the rules laid down by the World Trade Organization. There will be new tariffs as well as new regulatory checks and paperwork.

Prime Minister Johnson has said his government will continue their efforts to reach a trade deal, but there may not be a resolution by the January 1, the next deadline that has been fixed. He said, “I do think there is a deal to be done but we remain far apart on key issues.”

“And we have to take back control of our fisheries.”

The EU and the UK have been trying to reach a trade deal many months before the Brexit “transition period”, which is to end on December 31, midnight.

Failing to reach one would be economically painful for both countries, but the impact on the UK may be disproportionately larger, because the EU is its largest trading partner, as reports estimate a knock off of £40 billion ($53 billion), or 2%, of the UK’s economic output in the next year.

Prime Minister Johnson has revealed that he has warned the cabinet to prepare themselves for talks to fail, and the EU has make public plans intended towards keeping borders open to trains, trucks and commercial aircraft.
