eBay Launches ‘Santa Sneaker Drop with NBA Star Anthony Davis

Today, Tuesday, December 22, eBay launches a virtual “Santa Sneaker Drop,” with NBA star Anthony Davis at 12pm ET. It will end at 11:59 p.m. on December 24, 2020.

Participants have to use augmented reality (AR) to win a pair of sneakers including Travis Scott x Air Jordan

1, the Sean Wotherspoon x Nike Air Max 97/1, the Off-White x Air Jordan 1 Chicago and many more.

Activate the experience by using the camera on a mobile to open a virtual sneaker box that reaches you through a chimney and it will let you know if you are the lucky winner of a pair of sneakers. Follow the instructions on eBay and get five chances per day to win a pair.

There’s also a video where Santa Claus asks Davis to help him deliver hot sneakers. Davis swerves and over 500 pairs fall out of the sled. Davis partners with eBay to convert the dropped sneakers into a sneaker drop, to make up for his earlier lapse.

Both the parties expressed their delight in this partnership.

In a statement Davis said, “I never imagined having a chance to team up with the greatest big man of all time, and I’m grateful that eBay has given me this once in a lifetime opportunity to work with Santa this holiday. Social media rife with Navalny’s recording of FSB involvement in attack, Russia retaliates with EU sanctions

A recording of Alexei Navalny’s attack in August, wherein he was injected Novichok, has spread like wildfire after he released it online. It contained details of his attack with the nerve drug, as revealed by a Russian agent.

The anti-corruption blogger was on a flight when he collapsed. Emergency facilities at Omsk saved Navalny, though he is still under treatment at a hospital in Berlin.

On Monday, the Putin critic released, on YouTube, the recording of a long conversation he had with an FSB agent, who revealed how the potent chemical was administered into Navalny through his underpants. Navalny posed as a Russian security officer, with a high rank, on the phone and tricked Konstantin Kudryavtsev, the FSB official, into spilling the beans. Over 13 million viewers had seen the recording by the next day.

Experts have revealed that such a potent chemical could have only been obtained from a Russian government facility.

The Kremlin, denying any connection with the nerve agent or the attack on Navalny, also declines the allegation that Navalny was poisoned with Novichok. Russia has stated it will not allow the entry of several EU officials and certain institutions as a mark of retaliation for certain EU sanctions vested with Navalny.

Russia now faces huge embarrassment as the recording has gone viral. Viewers are condemning the FSB and Kudryavtsev, and social media is full of mocking comments.

Navalny blames Russian President Putin for sanctioning his assassination.

The World Central Kitchen, celebrity Chef Jose AndrÃ©s’ initiative has attracted Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, who are sending donations to the kitchen via their nonprofit endeavor, Archewell Foundation.

The couple will join hands with the celebrity chef and provide funds to four relief service hubs to be spearheaded by the chef. Jose AndrÃ©s’ initiative focuses on providing food to people in disaster zones.

Domenica in the Lesser Antilles, which battled two devastating hurricanes Maria and Irma, will be the first center and is slated to open in 2021. Another center is under development is in Puerto Rico. The third and fourth centers have not been named.

“The health of our communities depends on our ability to connect to our shared humanity,” the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said in a statement released by email to TODAY Food. “When we think about Chef AndrÃ©s and his incredible team at World Central Kitchen, we’re reminded that even during a year of unimaginable hardship, there are so many amazing people willing – and working tirelessly – to support each other. World Central Kitchen inspires us through compassion in action.”

Chef Jose AndrÃ©s also commented by email. “We believe in the healing power of food, and we like to say wherever there’s a fight so hungry people may eat, we will be there,” he said in his mail. “We are more energized than ever to continue this vital work, and we’re proud that it will be hand in hand with Archewell Foundation and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. I have come to know both of them well and believe that their values are directly aligned with what we stand for at World Central Kitchen.”

Aurora Mobile Shares Almost Double After New EV Partnership Announcement

The Chinese mobile data company, Aurora, announced a partnership with a “new energy” vehicle manufacturing company and its shares nearly doubled. The mobile data company has not announced the name of the EV manufacturer.

The company said that the partnership will improve the car maker’s efficiency in operations and services. It will also provide better driving experiences for customers.

Aurora stock traded up 88% and was at $5.99. However, by the end of Monday’s session, it fell by 8.1% and closed at $3.19 per share. The unnamed automaker sells green-energy vehicles. It had delivered vehicles, in excess of 100,000, throughout the world, during the third quarter.

The news release also announced that the company is in the process of developing an auto-pilot driver assistance system “which is widely recognized by drivers.” Aurora, which is based in Shenzhen, was founded in 2011. The mobile company said that it is “providing efficient and stable push notification, one click verifications, and app-traffic-monetization services.” It had said that it had entered into a partnership with Chinese EV maker WM Motor, last week.

A Christmas Gift from Playboi Carti: New Album Whole Lotta Red to Be Released

As a follow up to his popular album Die Lit, which was No. 3, on the US Billboard 200 Chart, American rapper Playboi Carti has officially announced that he will drop his latest album titled Whole Lotta Red on Friday, December 25, Christmas Day. He has added a pre-order link and plans to drop some merch as well. He has been unfortunate in his career as many of his tracked have been leaked online before official releases.

Way back in August 2018, Carti had first unveiled this title, “Whole Lotta Red.” In an interview with GQ in March 2019. The rapper had mentioned that Virgil Abloh, would be the creative director of this album.

Carti told Ben Dandridge-Lemco – THE FADER, that he had begun working on “Whole Lotta Red” at the end of 2018. The album was recorded at DJ Drama’s Mean Street Studios in Atlanta as well as at his home. In April he released @MEH.

In 2020 he made an appearance on Drake’s “Pain 1993” a part of the rapper’s “Dark Lane Demo Tapes.” He also appeared on Lil Yachty’s “Flex Up.”

In 2019, he had a few guest appearances including Solange’s “Almeda” and Mustard’s “Baguettes in the Face.”

He featured in Tyler, the Creator’s “EARFQUAKE” and SAFE’s “Paid in Full.” He also collaborated with Offset for “100 Racks.”

Owned by IAC, a huge tech and media company, Vimeo will become a standalone company after its rapid rise during the pandemic.

IAC which has other companies like Angie’s List and Ask in its portfolio, is planning to spin off Vimeo during the second quarter of 2021.

Joey Levin, IAC CEO, said in a press release, “It’s time for Vimeo to spread its wings and become a great independent public company.”

The reason behind giving Vimeo its independence lies in the fact that it is expected to raise money for investments to strengthen its products and sales capabilities.

Founded in 2004, Vimeo’s paid version, has been considered to be a professional alternative to YouTube. Paying members customize their sites and cater to team and professional needs, with password protection. Its free version has limitations.

Vimeo said that it has 200 million users. Last month, Vimeo CEO Anjali Sud said, “In the last 7 months, we’ve welcomed over 30 million new members, seen over 60 million new videos created and uploaded, and powered millions of live events that went digital for the first time – more than the prior 3 years combined.”

According to NBC, Vimeo raised $150 million in November, with the company’s valuation being pegged at $2.75 billion.

Today, in a press release, Sud remarked, “We’re ready for this next chapter and focused on making video far easier and more effective than ever before.”

SEC to sue Ripple for sale of unregistered securities: Ripple Calls Bitcoin ‘Chinese Controlled’

Late Monday, Ripple released a statement that the Securities and Exchange Commission would file a lawsuit against the fintech for the sale of certain unregistered securities. This is regarded as a violation of the investor protection law. The SEC could claim that the sale of Ripple’s XRP to patrons was an infringement and the case would be filed in the federal civil court.

Ripple’s blockchain-based currency XRP is known to be a valid legal tender, but has now become controversial. It is the third largest cryptocurrency across the globe. The company claims that its competitors such as Ethereum and Bitcoin are being controlled by the Chinese.

The claim circles around the dilemma regarding the status of such currencies. Are these types of cryptocurrencies investment contracts or are they currencies? If former, then they need to be under the regulation of the federal government; if latter, then there may be several rules regarding the disclosures of financial matters to investors may not apply to them.

Brad Garlinghouse, CEO, tweeted that exiting the SEC chairman Jay Clayton was “picking winners and trying to limit US innovation in the crypto industry” with his support for Ethereum and Bitcoin.

“The SEC – out of step with other G20 countries & the rest of the US govt – should not be able to cherry-pick what innovation looks like (especially when their decision directly benefits China). Make no mistake, we are ready to fight and win – this battle is just beginning,” he added.

Shares of cryptocurrencies dipped on the news of the SEC’s lawsuit against Ripple.

BioNTech Could Make New Vaccine in 6 Weeks if Current Vaccine is Ineffective

BioNTech’s CEO Ugur Sahin has said that he is confident that its current coronavirus vaccine will work effectively against the new variant in the virus, traced to the UK. He also believed that further studies were required.

On Tuesday, the chief executive said that “We don’t know at the moment if our vaccine is also able to provide protection against this new variant.” The new variant has the same proteins, as much as 99% similar, as the previous ones and hence the vaccine maker has “scientific confidence” in its vaccine.

The company is conducting additional studies to confirm the efficacy of its vaccine.

He added, “The likelihood that our vaccine works is relatively high…” He also said that in a worst-case scenario that “we could be able to provide a new vaccine technically within six weeks.”

More than 45 countries worldwide have authorized the use of the vaccine jointly developed by Pharma giant Pfizer and German pharmaceutical company BioNTech. The vaccine began its rollout in the U.S. and the UK. European Union nations are planning to begin vaccinations on December 27, 2020.

Moderna, another pharmaceutical company who has developed a different, effective vaccine, is also testing it on the new UK variant, a strain that has a faster rate of transmission.

iPhone 12 is the world’s best-selling 5G phone

Counterpoint Research published a report on Monday, December 21 and concluded that the iPhone 12 was the best-selling 5G phone in the month of October, worldwide, although it faced a delayed launch.

Despite being sold for only two weeks in October, it topped the monthly sales rankings. The sales were also high enough to make it the seventh best 5G phone sold between January and October this year.

The iPhone 12 Pro was not left far behind as it took the second spot in October. Both the phones’ combined sales managed to garner almost one fourth of the total sales of 5G phones in October.

Factors that contributed to the high sales include impatience in Apple fans, while waiting for the 5G upgrade in iOS. As soon as iPhones were launched, they sold in unprecedented numbers considering the short period of time. Strong carrier deals, bundled with these phones, also improved sales. Apple has also successfully marketed its products, including its iPhones in 140 countries, around the globe. This is a huge market base that increases worldwide sales.

Another positive result from iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro sales is that its mm Wave capable smartphones have made an impact in the market by increasing its penetration from 5% in September to 12% in October. This bodes well for the telecom industry and may push the tech giant into virtual reality VR and augmented reality AR.

Counterpoint predicts that sales would improve in the fourth quarter as holiday season approaches and sales may continue to gain momentum up to early 2021.

The coronavirus count is now at over 18 million cases and 318,000 fatalities since February, nationwide.
