U.S. sees rise in younger people hospitalized for COVID-19: Higher numbers in specific regions

0

On Saturday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that almost 4.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine were given in a single day. However, according to data published by the Johns Hopkins University, U.S., there have been more than 68,000 new cases of the coronavirus daily, in the U.S., in the past seven days.

Dr. Cyrus Shahpar, the Covid-19 data director at the White House posted on Twitter that it was an amazing Saturday as +4.63 million doses had been administered and it was 500 thousand more than the earlier record that had been administered the earlier Saturday and said “Incredible number of doses administered.”

During a White House briefing, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said that on one hand the nation had so much reason for optimism and hope and that many Americans were getting vaccinated and on the other hand cases and emergency room visits were also increasing. Most of these visits were made by younger adults who had not as yet been vaccinated.

The B.1.1.7 variant or the U.K. strain as it is often referred to have become the dominant strain in the nation. It is more contagious. It may increase the severity of the infection and could potentially be more deadly when compared with other strains.

Dr. Walensky had also said that that emergency department visits had increased among the 18 to 64 age group and Americans in the Upper Midwest part of the country were seeing a very high rate of infection. Michigan and Minnesota are seeing very high rates of infection. Ohio is also seeing a steady climb in infection rates.

According to the CDC, Florida has seen the highest rates of the infection from the B.1.1.7 variant but Michigan is also seeing a surge. Some officials believe that a combination of two factors: increased transmission rates and pandemic fatigue are contributing to the surge.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said on Thursday that more people should get vaccinated. It is also important to maintain Covid-19 protocols such as wearing a mask, maintaining social distance and practicing good hygiene.

Mar-a-Lago gets new celebrity: Sylvester Stallone joins the club

Sylvester Stallone is the latest celebrity to join former president Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach Florida. He was spotted at the club last month.

 The club membership is $200,000.

The 74-year old Rambo star had visited the club as a guest in 2016, when he attended a New Year’s Eve party. However, the source said that last month Stallone was at the club in Palm Beach, as a new member. He had posed for pictures with his fellow club members.

Stallone’s spokesperson declined to comment when asked about the star’s membership of the Mar-a-Lago club.

In December, Stallone had bought a huge property in Palm Beach, Florida. The $35 million property is located close to the club. A listing of the property reveals that it has seven bedrooms. It consists of 13,241 square feet of built-in space. It has 253 feet of waterfront with a dock. The estate also has a sandy beach. The pool pavilion also has an open-air cabana.

Mar-a-Lago has been Trump’s retreat. He left the White House and flew to his club in Palm Beach the same morning that the president Biden took the oath of office in Washington DC. There was a lot of debate whether the former president could stay at the club initially but he is well entrenched and his supporters travel there to meet him.

Sylvester Stallone has been seen all across Florida from when he decided to make it his residence. Unlike Palm Beach’s celebrity elite, who live mainly behind closed estates, the Rocky star has been seen around town. In February, he took a photograph with a group of deputies from the Sheriff’s Office in Palm Beach County. This picture was taken outside the popular restaurant, deli and bakery TooJay’s in Palm Beach.

Biden forms Commission to review Supreme Court expansion and more

0

On Friday, President Joe Biden formed a bipartisan commission with 36 members. The committee will consider potential changes that can be made including expanding the Supreme Court and imposing time limits on judges’ terms instead of lifetime appointments.

Some Democrats have been angling for the expansion of the highest court in the nation from several years. However, this step has been deferred from a while. The last administration of Trump changed the makeup of the judges and made them veer strongly towards conservatism. Liberals and advocacy groups are worried that this predominant caucus of conservative judges would threaten liberties and freedom including abortion rights, civil rights, healthcare access and gun control rights in the present and future.

Since 1869, the number of Supreme Court judges has remained at 9 through Congress has the ability to change the number and has done so in the past. Imposing a time limit on service has no precedent as yet. Some scholars believe that it would entail an amendment to the Constitution but others say that it could be done by a statute.

After Joe Biden signed the executive order, the White House press secretary Jen Psaki outlined some of the terms of referendum of the commission which are as follows:

  • The commission will represent the entire political spectrum
  • It will have liberal and conservative scholars
  • Former judges or lawyers who had appeared before the Supreme Court would also be included as members
  • The commission will hold public meetings
  • It will be given 180 days after which it should report its findings

Liberal activists have been vocal in demanding the immediate expansion of the Supreme Court. Many say that the balance of the court is skewed after former president Donald Trump seized opportunities to nominate three conservative judges to lifetime memberships with the help of Mitch McConnell.

In the nineteen thirties Democratic President Franklin Roosevelt tried to expand the Supreme Court, when it thwarted some of his policies. His attempts failed but the current Democratic president Joe Biden may have a better chance. Civil advocacy groups, the youth and the minorities are finally trying to raise their voice and drown the rhetoric of the far right and conservatives who dominated the nation during the Trump administration.

Bush family scion ‘seriously considering’ a bid for Texas Attorney General

0

The Bush family has deep Texan political roots and George P. Bush is no exception to the rule. However, he does differ from the rest of the Republicans in his family in his support for former president Donald Trump. Now, the grandson of George H.W. Bush has decided to most probably run for the post of Attorney General of Texas.

On Friday, Ash Wright, who is Bush’s senior adviser, told PEOPLE in a statement that “he is considering a run for attorney general.” He also said that Bush was concerned about the Texas’ attorney general Paxton, who he said was “plagued by ethical and integrity issues.”

The 44-year old Bush had great political credentials as he is the grandson of former president George H.W. Bush. He is also the nephew of the former president George W. Bush. He is the son of former Florida governor Jeb Bush.

In the beginning of this week, Bush told Fox News that he was “taking a very serious look” at a bid to run for governorship in Texas. He said that he would take a decision soon.

On Thursday morning, he was interviewed by local Dallas radio host Mark Davis. He commented that there had been a few serious allegations put against the current attorney general. He also said that the personally thought that the top law enforcement official in Texas “needs to be above reproach.”

Ken Paxton is up for re-election in 2022. The Austin American-Statesman had reported that former staffers had accused Paxton of being involved in an alleged bribery scandal. There is also another case against him for alleged security fraud according to a report from the Texan Tribune.

George P. Bush is a Trump backer. Trump had referred to him as “the only Bush that likes me” and has also called him a “great guy” in 2019. He is the only member of the Bush family who is holding public office. His run for the gubernatorial elections in Texas, if he is endorsed by Trump, may cause a mild shake up in the staunch Republican Bush family.

JetBlu breaks corporate ranks and donates to GOP lawmaker who objected to Electoral College count amid social media uproar

0

After the deadly riot on the Capitol on January 6, 500 corporates suspended donations to those who had a direct or indirect role in the lead up to the riot. Some companies suspended all donations indefinitely while others put a time frame. However, no corporate company donated to lawmakers who was among the handful objected to the presidential vote certification till JetBlue decided to do so.

JetBlue broke the corporate pact by donating $1000 to Rep. Nicole Malliotakis R-N.Y. The company justified the contribution made from its corporate political action committee to the lawmaker who is a member of the House panel that is in charge of aviation. This lawmaker is also one of those who objected to the Electoral College certification which was considered to be a precursor to the violence and rioting that followed when the Capitol was stormed by pro-Trump supporters.

Despite an uproar on social media, the company has stood by its donation. It is trending on Twitter with hashtags #JetRed and #boycottJetBlue. Dan Rather, a CBS anchor, who’s since retired, posted the news to his over 2 million Twitter followers. It received 20,000 responses.

On April 8, Bloomberg Government said that JetBlue was the first company to end a pause in PAC contributions following the January 6 Capitol riot. It also said that the company disclosed that it had given to one GOP lawmaker who had objected to the Electoral College count.

On Friday, JetBlue website was down after the social media uproar. A spokesman from the airline said that it was a planned outage as it was in the process of technology upgrades and was not related to any other event.

JetBlue defended its donation and said that it gives to both Democrats and Republicans. It said that it focuses on lawmakers who have relevance to its business. When asked if it will donate to other lawmakers who didn’t support the election results, the company did not respond.

Uber is offering incentives to bring back the drivers it lost during the pandemic to its app

0

During the pandemic, due to the lack of opportunities, many drivers had stopped working for ride hailing apps. Uber and Lyft had seen drivers leaving and taking up other opportunities. The scenario changed a bit as these apps were used to ferry eligible candidates to vaccine centers. Many recipients had said that traveling to a vaccine center was one of the challenges and both Uber and Lyft were roped in to take people to and from vaccine centers.

Now, as the number of vaccinated Americans is increasing, so are the number of those who want to travel locally as well as nationally and many customers are struggling to find a ride. Those who do so, say that they have long waits. So, Uber is losing its customers.

Uber has mentioned that it will invest up to $250 million to increase drivers’ earnings and payment guarantees. These moves have been made to bring in new drivers and retain the old ones as incentives are required in a situation where the demand exceeds the supply.

Lyft has also said that it has increased driver’s bonuses. It had not mentioned many details except that it would invest $10 to $20 million in driver supply.

Both the cab hailing app companies say that their drivers are earning much more than they did before the pandemic. However, they also acknowledge that the drivers have been slow to return to their platforms.

Uber has told its drivers about the bonus packages it is offering but drivers know that it will not be there for long and some are wary about rejoining the app.

California has seen the largest shortage of Uber drivers. Since drivers have been designated as “independent workers” due to Prop 22, some drivers are refusing rides, making it difficult for Uber to be considered reliable. As the nation is recovering, the demand for rides is on an upward trajectory and both Uber and Lyft will have to find ways to recruit new drivers and retain the current ones.

Biden to announce April 19 as new deadline for states to allow adults to register for Covid-19 vaccine

President Joe Biden will be visiting a vaccination site in Alexandria, Virginia on Tuesday. Following this visit the President will announce a voluntary deadline for states to open vaccination appointments for all adults by April 19. A White House official confirmed this news to NBC News.

White House press secretary Psaki said that Biden will also announce that 150 million shots have been administered in the first 75 days of his White House term. He is looking at a goal of 200 million shots within the first 100 days in office.

The earlier deadline for opening vaccination to all adults across the nation was May 1. However, many states had already announced that they would be opening registrations for all adults by April 19. NBC News reported that only two states: Hawaii and Oregon have not as yet announced that the eligibility dates for all registrations have been preponed by almost two weeks.

Last week, Biden had made yet another announcement about the vaccine drive when he said that about 90 percent of adults across the nation will be eligible to get vaccinated by April 19. The expanded vaccine plan proposes that most Americans will get their shots within 5 miles of their homes as 40,000 pharmacies will administer the shots. There will also be an increase in mass vaccination sites.

Andy Slavitt, senior pandemic adviser at the White House, also released data which is comforting. From last week 3.1 million doses, on an average, have been administered per day to U.S. citizens. Over 40% of adults have received at least one dose and over 75% of seniors have received one vaccine shot. More than 50% of the seniors have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Despite all these high vaccination figures, this is not a time to be complacent as highly contagious variants of the coronavirus virus mainly are spreading quickly through the nation and the U.K. variant has accounted for about 26% of the recent infections.

CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said on Wednesday that this was a critical moment in the nation’s fight against the pandemic and said that “we can’t afford to let our guard down.” She urged everyone to continue practicing Covid protocols including wearing a mask, washing hands and maintaining social distances.

Boeing discovers new problems in 737 series: Airlines ground planes

0

On April 9, 2021 Boeing has released a statement in its website saying that it has recommended to 16 customers that a potential electrical issue has to be looked into in a certain group of 737 MAX airplanes. It is not supposed to be related to issues that caused the 2018 and 2019 crashes.

The company said that they are working closely with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the U.S. to check the production issue. The company said that it has informed its customers about the specific tail numbers of the aircraft that have been affected. It also said that it would inform them about the corrective action that would have to be taken.

According to Reuters the following airlines have grounded certain numbers of the 737 MAX airplanes:

  • Southwest Airlines – 30
  • American Airlines – 17
  • United Airlines– 16

Just as the airline industry started its revival after the long hiatus due to the pandemic, this new issue tends to derail some of the benefits that are slowly appearing in the industry. The increase in vaccinations has led to an increase in travel but this grounding of airplanes will remove some of the growth and revenue till the technical problems are solved.

This issue is a different one from the one that led to two fatal crashes. At that time, Boeing didn’t tell pilots or the government about the installation of a piece of safety software as it was rushing to launch the plane in the market. It was competing with Airbus and is said to have designed new aircraft without sufficient research and development.

In February 2020, Boeing had found debris in the fuel tanks of more than two thirds of its grounded 737 MAX airplanes. After the debris was discovered the company made some changes in its production system.

In a statement on Friday, the FAA has said that it “will ensure the issue is addressed. Last December the FAA was accused of colluding with Boeing to ensure the recertification process of the 737 MAX in a Senate report.

Sony films including ‘Spider-Man’ series to stream on Netflix: Done Deal

On Thursday, Netflix announced that it has reached a deal with Sony films to stream its movies on its platform. As of now the streaming rights are available for films including “Morbius,” “Unchartered” and Bullet Train.

From 2022, Netflix will have exclusive rights to stream all the movies produced by Sony films. These movies will be streamed after they have been released in theaters and for home entertainment.

Blockbusters such as “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” as well as “Venom” and other Spider-Man films will also be available on Netflix.

Other huge films from Sony that will become a part of the platform include the Jumanji series and Bad Boys.

Sony has produced a huge number of blockbusters and super hits and the platform will gain access to and license an unspecified number of popular films from its archives and library.

The partnership with Sony also includes the platform being offered the first look at any films that Sony may consider as ideal for direct streaming or if it decides to later license to streaming.

Earlier, Netflix and Sony had already signed a deal in which all the animated films produced by Sony would be streamed on Netflix. Two animated films that were sold to the streaming platform during the pandemic include “The Mitchells vs the Machines” and “Wish Dragon. Other titles from Sony have also been sold outright to the streaming platform, one of them being Kevin Hart’s “Fatherhood.”

Sony films and Netflix have not disclosed the period of time proposed for this joint agreement, though it is said to be a minimum two year agreement and will run through Sony’s 2022 slate of movies, though other sources mention a five year deal.

They have not mentioned the financial agreement reached between the two companies but it is said that Sony films expects to receive several millions of dollars from Netflix as it is expected to continue for years.
