Hollywood Celebrities and L.A. prominent figures to help Gov. Newsom recall with August fundraiser

0

As the recall election date for California’s Governor Gavin Newsom looms in less than six weeks and his recent poll ratings fall, a host of Hollywood celebrities and other prominent figures from Hollywood are planning a fund raiser next week. Deadline was the first to exclusively report that some of the major persons who will chair the event in support of the California governor include Jeffrey Katzenberg, Casey Wasserman, and Andrew Hauptman.

The virtual event, which Governor Newson is planning to attend, is scheduled for August 12, will also be chaired by

  • Van Fletcher and Skip Paul
  • Stephanie and Mark Robinson
  • Eric Schmidt.

The August 12 event will turn over all the proceeds to the Stop the Republican Recall of Governor Newsom committee as there is no limit to the amount this committee can raise. It has   already raised $3   million from Reed Hastings of Netflix.

According to an invite received by Deadline, the tickets are reported to have the following rates for the following designations:

  1. Chair – $100,000
  2. Co-host – $50,000
  3. Supporter – $25,000
  4. Friend – $10,000.

Most of Hollywood is in favor of Gov. Newsom continuing to serve. They have called out the recall as a Republican effort and described it as “nonsense” a “sham” and “an effort to delegitimize” the American elections   process. Some of the others who have recently contributed to the committee also include

  • the Motion Picture Association
  • Paramount Pictures
  • Lionsgate’s Jon Feltheimer
  • Byron Allen.

The California Democratic Party and the SEIU Local 2015 have also contributed funds to the Stop The Republican Recall of Governor Newsom Committee.

Governor Gavin Newsom has been popular though his ratings have fallen recently. California is a blue state and votes Democrat. However, there is mild apathy among Democratic voters which needs to be urgently addressed.

The Republicans in fray are far too many in number. So far, more than 40 candidates have qualified. Conservative radio host Larry Elder has been gaining in popularity. The Republicans are enthused by the recall vote and will vote in full strength. It is left to the Democrats to vote in full strength as well to defeat the recall vote.

Although the recall hasn’t yet happened some contributions for Gavin Newsom’s 2022 reelection campaign have also been made. They include

  • Endeavor’s Ari Emanuel – $10,000
  • Kevin Huvane – $25,000

Texan Democrats in DC file lawsuit against Gov. Abbott for “anxiety and distress” following threat of arrest

0

On July 12,   more than 50 Democrats left Texas as a protest against the restrictive voting reform bills brought in by the Lone Star State. They moved to Washington DC. They said that they would use their time away from their home state to advocate for federal legislation on voting rights. However, Governor George Abbott threatened them with arrest when they returned to Texas. So, Democrats from Texas filed a lawsuit, on Friday.

On Friday, August 6, 22 of the Democrats who are currently in Washington DC filed a complaint against Governor George Abbott of Texas and two others including Republican House Speaker Dade Phelan and Republican State Representative James White in federal court in Austin, Texas.

In the suit, the Democrats said that the Republican attempts to bring them back to Texas for a special legislative session was a violation of their rights. Incidentally Governor Abbott called for a second special legislative session to pass two Republican voting rights bills. The Democrats had left Texas to break the quorum in the first place. So, why would they attend the second legislative session is a moot point to ponder?

In a statement, Abbott said that he would continue to call special session after special session to reform their broken system and to uphold election integrity, as well as to pass other important items that the Texans demand and deserve, according to him. He also said that passing those Special Session agenda items would chart a course towards a brighter future for the Lone Star State.

However, the opposition party, the Democrats don’t believe so. If they did, they would not have broken the quorum, the first time. Their lawsuit also says that they had been deprived of liberty for huge periods of time and that they had suffered a lot of “anxiety and distress” as they were separated from their families.

The plaintiffs also said that they had suffered from “discomfort” and “embarrassment” as their reputations have been affected by the unfolding of the current events. They also mentioned the huge amount of money they had to spend to remain in DC.

In their lawsuit, the Democrats also that the public statements by the three GOP members attempted to deny, coerce, threaten, intimidate, and prevent Democrat voters to vote. To date, there has been no public response to the lawsuit by Governor Greg Abbott.

US Scientists Find huge Dead Zone Below The Gulf of Mexico

0

In a press release, U.S. scientists from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that they had found a huge dead zone at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. Generally dead zones are approximately 5,400 miles but this newest one is around 6,334 square miles, larger than the state of Connecticut. This translates to four hundred million acres of land.

Our planet has natural dead zones. However, due to human activity, the size of these dead zones is expanding rapidly and this in turn affects the marine ecosystem more rapidly as marine life slowly dies in the area or it abandons the area.

What are Dead Zones?

Dead zones are areas under water where the oxygen levels are so low that all marine life dies in the area. No life survives in such areas.

Why are these dead expanding?

Agricultural runoff from farms and livestock businesses reaches the oceans and seas. It stimulates algal growth. Algae die and decompose due to bacteria which consume oxygen to facilitate the decomposition process. This leads to the formation of dead zones.

How do Dead Zones affect marine life?

Most marine life dies a natural death in a dead zone. If they are mobile marine life such as fish or shrimp, they leave the area. However, if they face even minute exposure to the dead zones these mobile marine species face negative effects. Exposure to these biological deserts changes the diets of the fish as well as their growth and reproduction. These zones also decrease the availability of a few marine species including shrimp.

What can be done to save marine ecosystems and life?

Researchers are currently planning to examine these dead zones and find ways and means to reduce their size as well as their negative impact on coastal resources. The negative impact of coastal resources can lead to a negative impact on the economy.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Assistant Administrator for Water, Radhika Fox said in the press release that the nation and our planet earth has seen the profound effects that climate change brings about to communities such as the historic drought in the West as well as floods. The release reiterated the fact that climate was directly “linked to water, including the flow of nutrient pollution into the Gulf of Mexico.”

San Francisco reports over 60 cases of ‘Delta Plus’ variant: Texas, Missouri, Florida hospitals at ‘breaking point’

0

On August 5, the Santa Clara Public Health Department reported that the county has detected 64 cases of the Delta plus variant. As delta variant cases rise across the nation, health experts are hoping that the new variant spreads less quickly and is contained as it may be more transmissible. As the variant is new and is limited as of now, sufficient research has not be carried out.

In a statement, county officials told CBS San Francisco that it was currently tracking the Delta variant as well as the Delta plus variant. They said that the new variant was present both in the state and in the nation. It also stated that there was no information whether the particular variant would be of more concern when compared with the original Delta variant.

Doctors say that it is difficult to predict variants and mutations as the coronavirus is going to continuously evolve and mutate as it is its basic nature to do so. However, all the doctors who spoke to the agency emphasized the importance of vaccinations. They said that mutations would increase and could  increase until the vaccination rates increase.

They also said that Delta plus was not the end of the mutations of the virus. It could continue mutating until it covered not only all the letters of the Greek alphabet but could cross the number of these alphabets. Incidentally the cold virus which is another common virus from time immemorial has had hundreds of mutations.

Despite centuries of research there is no cure for the common cold. If vaccinations, which have proved to be effective in controlling the coronavirus virus, despite mild breakthrough cases, do not increase, the chances of large number of mutations of the coronavirus remain and the next variant might just be worse that the earlier one.

Currently, the U.S. is seeing 100,000 new cases per day. The seven-day average of deaths due to COVID-19 is almost twice as much in two weeks from 270 to 500 a day, on Friday. Hospitals in Texas, Florida and Missouri are filled over capacity. The health system is once again getting stretched beyond its capabilities and is at “breaking point.”

The surge in cases due to the Delta variant is not only growing among the unvaccinated but is also infecting a larger number of children. According to data from the American Academy of Pediatrics almost 72,000 children and teenagers tested positive against COVID-19 in the week ending July 29.

There is no vaccine for child below the age of 12. Health officials and experts believe that these children should be placed in a protective bubble by ensuring that their parents and siblings are vaccinated. Family members should also ensure that these children should not come in contact with unvaccinated individuals in other environments as well. This could protect this vulnerable group until a vaccine is ready for them.

Actress Rose McGowan Rips Gov Cuomo, Alyssa Milano and Time’s Up CEO and President Tina Tchen on Twitter

Rose McGowan has been a staunch supporter of women’s rights , including sexual abuse and harassment.

Besides ripping New York   Gov. Andrew Cuomo about sexual harassment , she is calling out Time’s Up CEO and President Tina Tchen   in light the Attorney General Letitia James report  where she claimed she allegedly provided guidance on the drafting of a letter Cuomo advisers released that denied the legitimacy of allegations made by his first accuser and former aide Lindsey Boylan.

Tchen denounces  her involvement on Twitter, stating “I have never given advice to the Governor or his team.”

In her tweet she says-“Milano, TimesUp, fake performatives and profiteers. Alyssa’s statement at the time was gaslighting in full effect. She said of my truth telling ‘Hurt people hurt people.’ No, Alyssa, it’s lizard people like you, SDK Knickerbocker, Gov Cuomo, the Pres, Tina Chen who hurt people. Your time is up. Exit stage left,” McGowan concluded.

Tchen also responded on Twitter-“I had a phone call with Robbie Kaplan about a letter she said was being sent by his staffers during which I gave the same advice I give to everyone else: No survivor should be attacked and the truth should be told. I’m furious that the Governor’s office used me and TIME’S UP as a justification for their defense. TIME’S UP is an organization that has always centered survivors while holding those committing harm accountable. Any characterization of us to the contrary is simply not true,”

Dixie Fire Destroys Entire Town of Greenville, Ca and 432,813 acres overnight- Now Third Largest Fire in the U.S

0

As the Dixie fire grew overnight, it has now become the largest fire in the nation as it covered 432,813 acres overnight. On Friday morning, about 35 percent of it was contained though it has become difficult to control due to high temperatures and strong winds, according to officials. Since Thursday, the fire grew more than 97,000 acres. The fire officials said that this spread made it the third largest fire in the history of the Golden State.

This week, it burnt down the historic mountain town of Greenville which had many brick and mortar and wooden buildings standing tall from the 1800s. The entire town was charred in this strong blaze despite standing strong for centuries with all its historic structures no longer recognizable as they have been reduced to ashes.

Plumas County saw more than 100 homes destroyed. Four residents remain unaccounted for and there’s some hope that they might have reached locations with spotty service as signals are weak,   according to officials. About 2000 residents from Chester have been relocated as firefighters try to divert the flames.

A heatwave across California as well as high winds are reasons for the huge growth in the wildfire,  according to CalFire. It is also peak fire season, and the firefighters are hoping for conditions of humidity, so they can draw a perimeter around the blaze which is expected to continue till August 20.

Although the cause of the fire is still under official investigation, the Pacific Gas & Electric Company has said that the fire might have begun after a tree landed on one of its power lines.

As the brave firefighters are tackling the huge blaze, they are facing not just the ecological problem of climate change but also have to face residents pulling out guns on them as they don’t want to get evacuated.

The historic drought has left huge swaths of land – dry and parched. These are ideal conditions for fires to spread. An official mentioned that the timber, grass, and brush to be so dry in the locations that they were “basically near combustion.”

The American West has been facing the perils of climate change and as dry weather and droughts become more intense, so will the wildfires. However, California is not the only geographical region that is currently experiencing wildfires. On Friday, Turkey and Greece also saw thousands been evacuated as wildfires spread across these countries.

California’s Dixie Fire is now the largest wildfire in the U.S. and third largest in state history

0

Winds have made the Dixie Fire hard to control destroying  432,813 acres in one night. Friday morning, the fire was 35% contained.

The wildfire has destroyed 134 structures and threatens over 14,000 acres. Homes that were from the 1800’s have been all burned in the historic town of Greenville. The whole town  has been completely burned down.

The Pacific Gas & Electric company said the wildfire could have started when a tree landed on one of its power lines. However, the Dixie Fire is still under investigation.

Smoke from  the wildfires burning in  the northwest area of California’s northwest are reaching  into the San Francisco Bay Area as of Thursday night, and residents are seeing the haze of smoke in the  skies on Friday morning.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District reported  higher elevation smoke isn’t causing widespread unhealthy air quality levels.

A spokesperson for the management district, Aaron Richardson stated. “We think it’s above 2,000 feet. We may see some smoky skies in portions of the Bay Area, but we’re not expecting the air quality to be anything worse than moderate.”

The Air District is extending an air quality advisory for wildfire smoke through tomorrow, Saturday, August 7. Smoke from the McFarland, Monument, and River Complex fires is expected to continue to impact the Bay Area, particularly at higher elevation locations in the North Bay and East Bay. The smoke is aloft above 1,500 feet and is not expected to cause widespread unhealthy air quality across the Bay Area.

NEW 8/6/2021

Smoky, hazy skies will be visible across the Bay Area and smoke may impact localized regions such as in Napa, Sonoma, and Solano counties, and higher elevation locations. Onshore winds are expected to become stronger during the afternoon on Friday and Saturday. The Air District will be closely monitoring air quality throughout the region for smoke impacts from the fires.

If the smell of smoke is present, it is important that Bay Area residents protect their health by avoiding exposure. If possible, stay inside with windows and doors closed until smoke levels subside, if temperatures allow. It is also recommended that those impacted by smoke set their air conditioning units and car vent systems to re-circulate to prevent outside air from moving inside.

Smoke can irritate the eyes and airways, causing coughing, a scratchy throat, and irritated sinuses. Elevated particulate matter in the air can trigger wheezing in those who suffer from asthma, emphysema, or COPD. Elderly persons, children and individuals with respiratory illnesses are particularly susceptible to elevated air pollution levels and should take extra precautions to avoid exposure.

Spirit Airlines and American Airlines canceled more than 800 flights and delayed over 1000

0

On Monday, Spirit Airlines and American canceled more than 800 flights and delayed over 1000 flights. The airlines said that the flights didn’t take off due to weather and other factors. Passenger were left stranded at several airports and took to social media to vent their ire. This is the latest disruption this summer as Americans are traveling in unprecedented numbers after staying cooped up last summer due to the pandemic.

Spirit Airlines cancels hundreds of more flights on Friday August 6th,2021 and the day before, Thursday, 450 flights were cancelled which is more than half of its schedule.

A Spirit Airlines spokesperson told ABC News that they canceled 313 flights which amounts to about 40 percent of their daily operations. This gave the company “breathing room” to continue with flight operations that had been delayed or canceled due to

  • weather
  • shortage of staff
  • crews reaching legal hour limits that they are allowed to fly.

In a statement Spirit said that they were working around the clock to get back on track. It said that they faced both weather and operational challenges but most of their flights were on schedule.

The Florida base airlines canceled flights in several cities including

  • Miami
  • Orlando
  • Fort Lauderdale
  • San Juan.

On Monday, American Airlines canceled 529 flights amounting to almost 20 percent of its daily flights. The airlines told ABC News that it was still recovering from inclement weather in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. A spokesperson said that they had to divert at least 80 flights other airports due to severe thunderstorms. The spokesperson also said that it was repositioning planes and crews so that it could improve its operations.

Tired, weary, and frustrated passengers vented on social media about the shortfalls of the budget Spirit airlines. They posted about

  • long queues
  • inadequate staff at counters
  • heat
  • hunger
  • thirst
  • missing luggage
  • lack of basic amenities for young children and more.

An Orlando airport spokeswoman told the Sun Sentinel that she thought that the delays and cancellations were happening due to a variety of factors including

  • inclement weather with afternoon storms and lightning
  • reduced airline staff due to COVID-19
  • a huge spike in travel.

Carolyn Fennel, the spokesperson, also described it as “a perfect storm.”

Walmart workers receive special bonuses and pay raises to keep working through the holiday season

0

As the holiday shopping season approaches Walmart is keeping its workers on its shop floor with special bonuses and pay raises. In a Wall Street Journal exclusive, the agency said that sources detailed the various incentives offered by the nation’s largest employer. The approaching holiday season is crucial for all retailers and the nation’s retail giant is ensuring that its workers are motivated to work without leave by giving them a huge payout for these efforts.

According to the WSJ which quotes sources familiar with the matter, many of Walmart’s warehouses across the nation are giving employees either weekly bonuses or pay raises. The amount depends on the location as well as the type of job performed by its employees.

The person, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the WSJ that a few workers could receive $1000 for not missing a single scheduled shift during the second half of summer. Last week, other workers were eligible to receive temporary raises in pay amounting to several dollars an hour through early next year.

A Walmart spokesperson told the news agency that the retailer aimed to acknowledge employees’ efforts with incentives. It also wanted to provide opportunities to its workers in a competitive environment.

The spokesperson also said that the company’s warehouses continued to see high volumes as they prepared for the “peak season.”

Walmart is the largest retailer in the nation. It employs 1.6 million workers in the U.S. it has 190 warehouses across the nation.

Although many retail warehouses give employees bonuses during peak seasons, this year is of utmost importance for two major reasons. Despite the surge of the delta strain, there are no more lockdowns, and the economy is recovering. People are also eager to splurge their savings and shopping is definitely considered as “retail therapy” by many.

The second major reason for an increase in bonuses and pay raises to workers is a huge labor shortage across the U.S. Although the number of unemployed is still high, the number of job openings are higher according to Indeed, a job site. This makes it imperative that companies who have workers need to retain them as the labor demand is greater than the worker supply and a high attrition rate will have a negative effect on the company’s balance sheet.

As the Delta variant spreads in China, Beijing floats baseless ‘US Origins’ COVID conspiracy

Since March 2020, Chinese officials and state media had floated an alternate theory that the coronavirus did not originate in Wuhan, China as is accepted by major nations of the world. Instead,   they said the virus was leaked from a US Army lab. Last week, as the delta variant of the virus gripped China, which has been COVID-19 free from months, Beijing once again started increasing its efforts to propagate this baseless conspiracy theory.

Last month Global Times, a state-run agency, began a campaign asking people to sign an open letter to the World Health Organization (WHO). It demanded that an investigation into the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Studies at Fort Detrick, Maryland. Some of the Chinese have started   calling it a “US Virus” similar to Trump calling it a “China Virus.”

After the initial outbreak of the coronavirus in China, Beijing initiated large scale testing and lockdowns and managed to control large outbreaks with months. Local flareups were blamed on air passengers from other countries, frozen foods, or other goods. It has said that the recent spread of the delta variant was due to workers who improperly cleaned a plane from Russia.

China recently refused to allow a WHO team to inspect its labs in a second phase Investigation in Wuhan, a city that is considered to be the first place where there was an outbreak of COVID-19. When an earlier team of global scientists and experts visited China, they had been given limited access and data.

Beijing has strongly denied the possibility that COVID-19 could have leaked from one of its labs in Wuhan. In May, President Biden had ordered the intelligence community to check whether the virus could have originated in a Wuhan lab. China has called this investigation a politically motivated probe.

The trade wars, the military tensions and the coronavirus pandemic have worsened the relationship between the U.S. China. However, there was one bright spot as gymnasts from both the countries cheered each other. Chinese officials and media praised the interaction in official channels as well on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter.
