Yankees try to get offense going vs. Guardians

The New York Yankees spent the past three days watching Miguel Cabrera inch closer to reaching 3,000 hits while also enduring more frustration with runners in scoring position.

On Friday, they will face another historical moment when they host the Cleveland Guardians for the first time since the team changed names.

New York is returning from splitting a six-game road trip through Baltimore and Detroit. They dropped two of three in Baltimore before ending the trip with Thursday afternoon’s 3-0 loss when Cabrera remained one shy of the 3,000-hit club.

The Yankees gave up three hits to the slugger Wednesday but held him hitless Thursday and intentionally walked him before allowing two runs in the eighth.

“It’s a baseball call all the way, but there’s no doubt that there’s a little more feeling to it, understanding the situation,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “In the end, you have to do what you think is right within the context of the game.”

The Yankees did not score more than five runs on the trip and were blanked twice. They ended the trip by going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and are hitting .176 (19-for-108) with runners in scoring position.

“That’s a part of our game and something we’ve got to get going,” Boone said. “When we’re not doing that and we get opportunities we’ve got to take advantage.”

Cleveland was known as the Indians since 1915 before announcing the name change in July. In their final two games at Yankee Stadium under the old moniker, the Guardians outscored the Yankees 22-4 in a pair of lopsided victories Sept 18-19.

So far this season, Cleveland has scored double-digit runs four times and scored 19 runs in a three-game sweep of the visiting Chicago White Sox. The Guardians secured the sweep by collecting 13 hits in Thursday afternoon’s 6-3 win when Franmil Reyes and Josh Naylor drove in two runs apiece.

“It’s awesome, but it’s about more than me,” said Naylor, who was activated off the injured list last week following a recovery from a fractured right leg. “It’s about the team and we did a good job this series.”

Jose Ramirez went 2-for-5 Thursday and is hitting .426 (20-for-47) during a season-opening 12-game hitting streak. He enters Friday with a 16-game streak dating to the end of last season.

Jameson Taillon (0-1. 3.72 ERA), who has allowed two earned runs in each of his first two starts, opens the series for the Yankees. He allowed two runs on five hits in five innings of a 3-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on April 11 and then allowed two runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings in Saturday’s 5-2 win at Baltimore.

Taillon is 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA in two career starts against Cleveland. He last opposed them April 25, 2021 in Cleveland, when he allowed four runs and five hits over four innings of a 7-3 loss and Reyes hit a three-run homer off him.

Eli Morgan (1-0, 4.50) will make his first start after allowing three runs on five hits in six innings during three relief appearances. He last pitched in Sunday’s 8-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants when he allowed two runs in the sixth inning.

Morgan’s lone start against the Yankees was Sept. 19 of last season, when he opposed Gerrit Cole and pitched six innings of one-run ball to earn the win.

Four unanswered goals lift Hurricanes over Jets

Rookie Seth Jarvis scored the go-ahead goal against his hometown team with 11:39 to play as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the visiting Winnipeg Jets 4-2 on Thursday night at Raleigh, N.C.

Jaccob Slavin and Jordan Staal (empty-net goal) also scored in the third period to help Carolina complete a comeback from a 2-0 deficit.

Teuvo Teravainen notched the Hurricanes’ first goal. Hurricanes goalie Antti Raanta made 20 saves.

Pierre-Luc Dubois and Kyle Connor scored in the first period for Winnipeg. Goalie Eric Comrie stopped 42 shots.

The Jets are changing the look of the Metropolitan Division this week. They lost 3-0 Tuesday night on the road against the New York Rangers (51-21-6, 108 points), who remained tied with Carolina (50-20-8, 108 points) after beating the New York Islanders on Thursday.

The Jets (35-32-11, 81 points) finished a six-game road trip with four straight losses to teams that have already qualified for the playoffs.

Connor opened the scoring with his team-leading 44th goal just 7:10 into the game. Dubois assisted on the goal, skating behind the net and sending a pass to Connor, who was waiting in front of the net.

With 1:05 remaining in the opening period, Dubois posted his 27th goal of the season. His shot from the left side went through the legs of Carolina defenseman Brett Pesce.

Teravainen broke through for the Hurricanes on a 4-on-3 power play with 30 seconds left in the second period. The goal came on the team’s 33rd shot on net. Sebastian Aho’s assist gave him 42 for the season, breaking a tie with Teravainen for the team lead before Teravainen pulled even with an assist on Jarvis’ goal.

Teravainen became the fifth Hurricane this season to reach the 20-goal mark, something that hasn’t happened for Carolina in 15 years.

Carolina held a 34-17 edge in shots through two periods.

Staal, the captain, was back on the ice after a one-game absence stemming from a hit he absorbed Saturday night at Colorado.

The Jets were trying to earn a split of the season series with Carolina, but were unable to avenge a 4-2 loss in December at home.

Jake Guentzel, Casey DeSmith shine in Penguins’ shutout of Bruins

Jake Guentzel had a hat trick to reach 40 goals and goaltender Casey DeSmith stopped all 52 shots he faced Thursday to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-0 win over the visiting Boston Bruins.

It was DeSmith’s ninth career shutout, his third of the season and his first against Boston.

The game was an equalizer after the Bruins beat the Penguins 2-1 Saturday in Boston.

It also helped Pittsburgh (44-23-11, 99 points) in its quest to avoid falling into a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, while it was a blow to the Bruins (47-25-5, 99 points) in their attempt to climb up from a wild-card position.

Jason Zucker also scored for the Penguins, who had lost nine of 13 (4-7-2) entering the night.

DeSmith, filling in while No. 1 goalie Tristan Jarry deals with what is believed to be a broken right foot, set a career high in saves. According to the Penguins, his save total was a franchise record for a shutout.

The Bruins had their two-game winning streak snapped.

Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman made 28 saves.

Guentzel opened the scoring at 7:49 of the first. Off a pass from Sidney Crosby, he used a backhand-to-forehand move to get around defending forward Charlie Coyle and shot the puck between Swayman’s pads to make it 1-0.

Boston came out with a flourish in the second and built an 10-0 shot advantage, but the next shot belonged to Pittsburgh, and it was a goal.

Off a touch pass at center ice from Jeff Carter, Zucker got a short breakaway and flipped the puck over Swayman’s glove for a 2-0 Penguins lead at 6:10.

Guentzel struck again at 16:12 of the second. Kris Letang, from the bottom of the left circle, wove a pass across to Guentzel in the bottom of the opposite circle. Guentzel scored on a shot inside the near post to make it 3-0.

Guentzel completed his fifth career hat trick with an empty-netter with 2:05 left in regulation. It gave him 40 goals for the second time in his career.

NBA roundup: Grizzlies rally to take series lead vs. Wolves

Desmond Bane scored 26 points to lift the visiting Memphis Grizzlies to a 104-95 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday in Game 3 of a Western Conference first-round playoff series in Minneapolis.

Bane sank seven 3-pointers as the second-seeded Grizzlies overcame a 26-point deficit to seize a 2-1 lead in the series. Game 4 is Saturday in Minneapolis.

Brandon Clarke collected 20 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Grizzlies, who outscored seventh-seeded Minnesota 37-12 in the fourth quarter. Ja Morant overcame a 5-for-18 shooting performance to finish with 16 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds.

Timberwolves guard D’Angelo Russell scored 22 points, a stark contrast to his performance in the first two games of the series. He sank just 5 of 22 shots in Games 1 and 2 while scoring 21 points.

Warriors 118, Nuggets 113

Stephen Curry and Jordan Poole scored 27 points each, Klay Thompson added 26 and visiting Golden State beat Denver to take a 3-0 lead in their Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Gary Payton II had 11 points and Draymond Green finished with 10 assists for Golden State, which can close out the series Sunday in Denver.

Nikola Jokic had 37 points and 18 rebounds for the Nuggets, who have lost seven straight playoff games dating back to last season. Aaron Gordon added 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Mavericks 126, Jazz 118

Jalen Brunson scored 31 points and Dallas survived Utah’s comeback attempt to take a 2-1 lead in their first-round Western Conference playoff series with a win in Salt Lake City.

Brunson led seven Dallas players in double digits to compensate for the absence of superstar Luka Doncic, who has yet to play in the series due to a strained left calf.

Spencer Dinwiddie scored 20 points, while Maxi Kleber (17 points) and Davis Bertans (15 points) each drained four 3-pointers. Dallas snapped an 11-game losing streak at Utah.

Sabres beat Devils with help from Owen Power’s first goal

Rasmus Dahlin had a goal and an assist to help the visiting Buffalo Sabres to a 5-2 win against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday.

Owen Power scored his first NHL goal, Victor Olofsson had three assists and Tage Thompson had two assists for the Sabres (30-38-11, 71 points), who have won three in a row. Craig Anderson made 29 saves.

Jesper Boqvist and Nikita Okhotiuk scored and Andrew Hammond made 23 saves for the Devils (27-43-7, 61 points).

Kyle Okposo opened the scoring with a short-handed tally at 11:53 of the second period when he took a pass from Dahlin and shot from just outside the Devils’ blue line, a long-range shot that went under Hammond’s glove.

Alex Tuch doubled the lead with the Sabres’ second short-handed marker on the same penalty just over a minute later. Olofsson stole the puck in the defensive zone and skated down the ice for a chance that was saved by Hammond, but Tuch was there for the rebound, backhanding it five-hole to make it 2-0 at 12:40.

Dahlin pushed it to 3-0 at 17:58. Olofsson sent a pass through Tomas Tatar’s legs to an uncovered Dahlin in the right circle for a one-timer, with his shot hitting Devils forward Dawson Mercer and redirecting into the net.

Boqvist got the home side on the board with eight seconds remaining in the second period. Anderson made a pad save on a chance in tight but Boqvist stayed on the puck, poking it by the goalie’s skate at the doorstep to cut it to 3-1.

Okhotiuk scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game. He stepped into a rebound and fired from the left circle to narrow it to 3-2 at 4:59 of the third period.

Power, the 2021 first overall draft pick, took a feed from a fallen Jeff Skinner and drove the net, beating Hammond through the legs for his first goal to make it 4-2 Buffalo at 8:33.

Skinner scored off the rush to make it 5-2 at 16:03.

Warriors outfinish Nuggets, grab 3-0 series edge

Stephen Curry and Jordan Poole scored 27 points each, Klay Thompson added 26 and the visiting Golden State Warriors beat the Denver Nuggets 118-113 on Thursday night to take a 3-0 lead in their Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Gary Payton II had 11 points and Draymond Green finished with 10 assists for Golden State, which can close out the series Sunday in Denver.

Nikola Jokic had 37 points and 18 rebounds for the Nuggets, who have lost seven straight playoff games dating back to last season. Aaron Gordon added 18 points and 12 rebounds, Will Barton scored 13 points and Monte Morris had 10.

The Warriors surged to a 97-93 lead four minutes into the fourth quarter, but Gordon hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to a point with 7:50 left.

Thompson hit another 3-pointer and Andre Iguodala converted a three-point play to put Golden State up 103-99.

Jokic scored the next six Denver points and Jeff Green made two free throws to tie the game at 107 with 4:27 left.

Curry and Gordon traded two made free throws apiece before Jokic’s driving finger roll put the Nuggets ahead 111-109 with 3:20 left, but then the Warriors took over.

Andrew Wiggins hit a corner 3-pointer out of a timeout to put Golden State ahead for good, Poole made it 114-111 with a driving layup and Curry increased the margin to five with 40.8 seconds left.

Denver missed three shots and committed two turnovers as the Warriors pulled away.

The Nuggets tied the game at 45 midway through the second quarter, but Golden State went on a 16-4 run to lead by 12 with 4:01 left in the half. Denver got within four on a jumper by Jokic, but the Warriors scored the last six points of the half — on a 3-pointer and a three-point play — to lead 69-59 at intermission.

The Nuggets opened the third quarter on an 11-2 run to get within a point. Thompson hit a 3-pointer before Denver responded with another run, capped by two dunks by Gordon, to go ahead 80-75.

Golden State scored the next seven points to regain the lead. Bones Hyland’s corner 3-pointer tied it at 85, and the Nuggets took an 89-87 lead into the fourth quarter.

Panthers drop Wings to seal division title, top mark in East

Mason Marchment had a goal and an assist as the Florida Panthers clinched the Atlantic Division title and the best record in the Eastern Conference with a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday in Sunrise, Fla.

The Panthers extended their winning streak to a franchise-record-tying 12 games, matching a run from Dec. 15, 2015, to Jan. 10, 2016. Their last loss was a 5-2 setback on March 27 in Toronto against the Maple Leafs, whom they host Saturday.

Aleksander Barkov and Sam Reinhart netted power-play goals, and Noel Acciari and MacKenzie Weegar scored for the Panthers (56-15-6, 118 points), who won for the 10th consecutive time at home where they are an NHL-best 33-6-0.

Jonathan Huberdeau’s two assists evened him with Edmonton’s Connor McDavid for the league lead with 113 points.

Florida’s 322 goals this season are the most by a team in the past 25 years, eclipsing Tampa Bay’s 319 in 2018-19.

Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves for his 38th triumph to tie Nashville’s Juuse Saros for the NHL lead.

The Red Wings (30-38-10, 70 points) got goals from Sam Gagner and Tyler Bertuzzi and two assists from Pius Suter.

After losing 6-1 to Florida Sunday in Detroit, Alex Nedeljkovic surrendered five goals on 27 shots.

Detroit started fast with Gagner’s wrister from the slot at 4:08 for his 13th tally, but Acciari — scratched in the last 10 games — tied it at 9:19 with his second goal.

Five minutes after Reinhart swept Adam Erne’s close shot away from the goal line, Florida’s sixth-ranked power play capitalized on its first chance when Barkov rifled home his 38th tally.

With 21 seconds remaining in the first period, Marchment was credited with his 17th marker after Detroit’s Lucas Raymond got his stick on the puck on a rush that stalled in front of Nedeljkovic.

In the second, Bertuzzi notched a spinning goal when he fired one in at 6:15 to make it 3-2. With 28 goals, the left wing is Detroit’s active leader with Dylan Larkin (31 goals) out for the season.

But Florida held the territorial edge after Bertuzzi scored, cycling the puck in the offensive end and pushing it to 4-2 when Marchment won a board battle and fed Weegar for his eighth at 16:05.

Reinhart added his 29th tally on the power play in the final period to round out the scoring.

Luka Doncic-less Mavs earn road win over Jazz

Jalen Brunson scored 31 points and the Dallas Mavericks survived a Utah Jazz comeback attempt to take a 2-1 lead in their first-round Western Conference playoff series with a 126-118 win in Salt Lake City on Thursday.

Brunson led seven different Dallas players in double digits to compensate for the absence of superstar Luka Doncic, who has yet to play in the series due to a strained left calf.

Spencer Dinwiddie scored 20 points, while Maxi Kleber (17 points) and Davis Bertans (15 points) each drained four 3-pointers.

Dorian Finney-Smith contributed 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals while Josh Green and Reggie Bullock each had 12 points as Dallas snapped an 11-game losing streak at Utah.

Game 4 in the best-of-seven series will be played Saturday in Salt Lake City.

Donovan Mitchell scored 32 points, Bojan Bogdanovic netted 24 and Mike Conley totaled 21 points, but the Jazz defense was stymied by the Doncic-less Mavs once again. The Mavericks punished Utah from outside with a very Jazz-like 18-of-42 shooting from 3-point range.

The Jazz trailed 68-51 at halftime before progressively trimming into the deficit, eventually pulling within 103-102 on a Conley step-back 3-pointer with 6:42 remaining.

However, Dinwiddie followed with consecutive baskets, and Dallas, which never trailed after the first quarter, came up with clutch plays the rest of the way.

Mitchell, who had just four points in the first half, began the second half with a three-point play and didn’t stop scoring until he had 18 in the quarter to lead the Jazz’s comeback attempt. Utah made much of the rally, playing small ball with 6-foot-6 Eric Paschall on the court instead of 7-1 Rudy Gobert.

The Jazz pulled within nine late in the first half, but the Mavs closed on a 9-2 run thanks to two 3-pointers from Bertans and another from Dinwiddie to take their biggest lead of the game at 17 going into the break.

Brunson led four double-digit-scoring Mavs in the opening half with 15 points. Dallas started brilliantly from beyond the arc, hitting 13 of 25 long-distance attempts and making 50 percent from the floor before halftime. Meanwhile, the Jazz were only 3 of 9 from deep in the first two quarters while hitting 48.5 percent of their field-goal attempts.

Utah finished 9 of 28 from 3-point range.

James van Riemsdyk scores twice as Flyers double up Habs

James van Riemsdyk had two goals and one assist while Ivan Provorov had one goal and one assist to lift the Philadelphia Flyers past the host Montreal Canadiens 6-3 on Thursday in a matchup of the two worst teams in the Eastern Conference.

Oskar Lindblom, Travis Konecny and Morgan Frost added one goal apiece for the Flyers, who snapped a six-game losing streak.

Bobby Brink contributed two assists for Philadelphia (24-43-11, 59 points), and Martin Jones made 31 saves for the win.

Mike Hoffman, Jake Evans and Cole Caufield scored one goal each for the Canadiens (20-47-11, 51 points), who dropped their seventh in a row.

Canadiens goaltender Carey Price stopped 28 shots.

The Flyers went ahead 1-0 when van Riemsdyk connected at 7:43 of the first period. The goal was the result of a turnover by Price behind the net.

Provorov extended the advantage to 2-0 at 14:29 of the first off a van Riemsdyk assist.

The Canadiens closed within 2-1 when Hoffman scored at 15:31 of the first. Hoffman stayed aggressive with a bouncing puck in front and pushed it under Jones’ pads.

Montreal equalized at 2 when Evans scored at 5:28 of the second.

The Flyers responded quickly when Lindblom fired a wrist shot on the short side and past Price for a 3-2 lead at 6:49.

Konecny eventually broke free, received a crisp pass from Ronnie Attard and scored for a 4-2 advantage at 13:02 of the second.

The Canadiens came out strong on offense to open the third and had several strong scoring chances in the first six minutes. Evans had a stellar slap shot saved by Jones at 5:12.

Montreal’s Tyler Pitlick nearly scored short-handed at 13:11, but his shot clanged off the crossbar. It was one of several solid chances throughout the game for the Canadiens while playing short-handed.

The Flyers then moved out to a 5-2 lead when Frost scored at 15:36.

Just 1:20 later, van Riemsdyk produced his second goal for a commanding 6-2 advantage.

Caufield closed the Canadiens within 6-3 at 17:33.

Mavs rule out Luka Doncic (calf) for Game 3

Mavericks star Luka Doncic remained sidelined Thursday as Dallas visited the Utah Jazz in Game 3 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Doncic, who hurt his left calf in the regular-season finale, also sat out the first two games against the Jazz, which the teams split.

“He continues to progress, but as we said from the start with this injury, we’re going to be cautious,” Mavs coach Jason Kidd said Thursday afternoon. “We feel like sitting him tonight follows that plan.”

Doncic did a solo workout on Thursday in Salt Lake City, afterward telling ESPN, “Feeling great.”

Earlier in the day, before the Mavericks decided he would remain out, Doncic told reporters, “If there’s going to be risk, I don’t think I’m going to play. … If it’s not risk, I don’t want to play limited minutes. I’d be nervous. I want to be out there the most time as possible. …

“If I’m ready and there’s no risk of (aggravating the) injury, I’ll be out there.”
