Kevin Durant, Nets look to solve Celtics in Game 4

Before encountering this version of the Boston Celtics’ defense, a healthy Kevin Durant never averaged less than 24.5 points in any postseason series.

The ability to effectively defend Durant and limit the superstar’s impact are among the reasons the Celtics hold a 3-0 lead in their Eastern Conference first-round series. Boston can complete the sweep of the best-of-seven set on Monday night when they visit the Brooklyn Nets.

The Celtics, who possessed the NBA’s top-ranked defense during the regular season, won each game in different ways. If they cannot close out the series Monday, Game 5 is Wednesday in Boston.

Boston received a buzzer-beating shot from Jayson Tatum in the series opener and overcame a 17-point deficit in Game 2. In Game 3 on Saturday, the Celtics seized the lead for good late in the first quarter and moved to the verge of the sweep with a 109-103 victory.

While each of those games were won differently, a theme is Boston’s ability to contain Durant. He is averaging 22.0 points on 36.5 percent shooting against Boston.

“Clearly they’re loading up on him, sending bodies to him, being physical with him,” Nets coach Steve Nash said.

On Saturday, Durant’s impact was so minimal that he scored 16 points and took 11 shots — his fewest attempts in a playoff game since taking 10 in Game 2 of the 2017 Western Conference finals against San Antonio. That followed up an 0-for-10 effort in the second half in Game 2.

Following Saturday’s game, Durant conceded Boston’s defense was causing him to overthink things.

“I was just thinking too much to be honest, this whole series,” Durant said. “Like how I approach the game. We got another game to play, another opportunity, and I’m looking forward to that.”

While Durant’s struggles are a key factor, so is the performance of Tatum. Tatum scored 39 points Saturday and is averaging 29.7 points in the series.

“I’m not trying to make it a one-on-one thing or a matchup thing. For me, trying to go out there and play as hard as I possibly can, give it everything I got on both ends, and do whatever I can to ensure that we get a win on any given night,” Tatum said. “And everybody on our team is doing that, sacrificing, competing, being on the same page.”

Tatum also is getting plenty of help as Jaylen Brown is averaging 22.7 on 50.9 percent from the field. Brown had 23 points and Marcus Smart added 14 on Saturday for the Celtics, who shot 50 percent from the floor.

The Nets are getting productive showings from Bruce Brown, who scored 26 points Saturday and is averaging 18.0 in the series. Brown’s showing is occurring as Kyrie Irving was limited to 26 points in the past two games after getting 39 in the series opener.

It also is possible Brooklyn could finally unveil Ben Simmons.

Simmons was the centerpiece of the James Harden trade to Philadelphia at the deadline but has yet to appear for the Nets due to a back injury. If he plays, it would be his first appearance since Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against Atlanta on June 20.

LAFC rallies to defeat short-handed FC Cincinnati

0

Kellyn Acosta and Danny Musovski scored 20 minutes apart in the second half and Los Angeles FC rallied for a 2-1 win over host FC Cincinnati on Sunday.

Down 1-0 in the 59th minute, Acosta found himself in the right spot to drive the ball — off the remnants of star Carlos Vela’s floated corner — by FCC keeper Roman Celentano for his first goal of the season.

Then in the 79th, Vela, who has gone five league matches without a goal, set up Musovski to convert the eventual winner just seven minutes after he came on as a substitute. It marked the third comeback victory this season for LAFC (6-1-1, 19 points), which moved back atop the Western Conference standings.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati (2-5-1, 7 points) left disappointed, and amid an 0-3-1 rut, after a spirited first-half showing produced its 1-0 halftime lead on Luciano Acosta’s goal in the third minute of stoppage time. FCC played without leading scorer Brandon Vazquez (five goals), but were given a chance at the upset thanks to Celentano, who made numerous point-blank or diving saves and finished with six saves in his MLS debut.

The game’s first goal came off an LAFC turnover. The ball eventually found Luciano Acosta, who right-footed it by off-balanced Los Angeles keeper Maxime Crepeau (five saves).

Meanwhile, Celentano’s first true test came in the 22nd minute when he saved a point-blank shot from Kwadwo Opoku. He recorded a similar stop on Jose Cifuentes later in the half.

Celentano came up with another big save on Cristian Arango just one minute into the second half. After Crepeau made his own straight-on save of Dominique Badji’s strike, Celentano’s diving grab in the 53rd minute thwarted Opoku again and kept Cincinnati’s hopes of the upset momentarily alive.

In addition to Vazquez, Cincinnati played minus six other starters, including No. 1 goalkeeper Alec Kann (lower-body injury) and Alvaro Barreal (illness), who scored twice in its U.S. Open Cup win over Pittsburgh earlier in the week.

Red Bulls blank Orlando City for fourth straight road win

0

The New York Red Bulls remained perfect on the road with a 3-0 win against host Orlando City SC on Sunday.

With the victory, the Red Bulls (4-2-2, 14 points) became the third-ever MLS team to win each of their first four road matches of a season, and the first since the Los Angeles Galaxy realized the feat in 1998.

The Lions (4-3-2, 14 points) had their two-game winning streak halted.

The visitors dominated the attack in the first half, attempting nine shots, of which three reached the target. Orlando struggled to generate any attack, with zero attempts in the opening 45 minutes.

New York had a chance in the 23rd minute off sustained pressure off a corner when midfielder Omir Fernandez tried to capitalize from the top right corner of the goal area but hit the outside of the net.

The Red Bulls finally connected three minutes later. Fernandez, on the right side, dished to Luquinhas at the top of the box and the attacking midfielder, with time and space, struck for his first MLS tally to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.

New York came close to doubling its lead in first-half stoppage time on Ashley Fletcher’s attempt from the left side of the goal area, but he was denied by goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.

Cristian Casseres Jr. doubled the lead in the 48th minute. Gallese stopped Casseres at the top of the goal area but the ball remained loose and Casseres put his own rebound into the open net to make it 2-0 New York.

Ercan Kara had one of the best chances for the home side in the 64th minute when he was one-on-one with goalkeeper Carlos Coronel, who made the save, but Kara was flagged for offside.

Rodrigo Schlegel’s header attempt in the 72nd minute nearly got the Lions on the board but it went just wide of the left post.

Lewis Morgan extended it to 3-0 in the 88th minute from the penalty spot after video review awarded New York a penalty off a Schlegel handball in the box.

Orlando finished the match with just three attempts, none reaching the target.

Ohio State DL Noah Potter to transfer

Noah Potter has entered the transfer portal, the second Ohio State defensive lineman to do so this week.

He follows defensive lineman Jacolbe Cowan, who announced his transfer status on Monday following the end of spring practice.

Potter was a four-star prospect in the Class of 2019 from Mentor, Ohio. He played his first two seasons in a reserve role and missed 2021 with a foot injury. He also underwent emergency eye surgery after being diagnosed with a torn retina last fall.

The 6-foot-6 Potter was expected to play a larger role in 2022, but defensive line is one of the deepest positions for the Buckeyes.

In the spring game on April 16, Potter made six tackles (two for loss) and had two sacks.

OpTic Gaming wins Champions Tour Stage 1 Masters

0

OpTic Gaming swept LOUD in Sunday’s best-of-five grand final to win the Valorant Champions Tour 2022: Stage 1 Masters at Reykjavik, Iceland.

OpTic won three closely contested maps — 13-9 on Ascent, 14-12 on Bind and 15-13 on Breeze — and took home the $200,000 grand prize out of a $675,000 prize pool.

The grand final was a rematch of the upper-bracket final, in which LOUD won 2-1 to knock OpTic into the lower-bracket final. OpTic trounced ZETA DIVISION 3-0 in Saturday’s lower-bracket final to stay alive.

It was a dream run for the American organization, which only placed second in the North American Challengers tournament to qualify for Reykajvik and dropped its opening match in the Group Stage earlier this month.

Facing elimination at that point, OpTic beat KRU Esports and XERXIA to emerge as the second seed from Group B.

Valorant Champions NA Stage 1 Challengers prize pool:
1. $200,000 — OpTic Gaming
2. $120,000 — LOUD
3. $85,000 — ZETA DIVISION
4. $65,000 — Paper Rex
5-6. $40,000 — DRX, G2 Esports
7-8. $25,000 — Team Liquid, The Guard
9-10. $15,000 — Ninjas in Pyjamas, XERXIA
11-12. $10,000 — Fnatic, KRU Esports
DNP. $25,000 — FunPlus Phoenix

FunPlus Phoenix were awarded $25,000 after travel restrictions in Ukraine and Russia forced some of their players to miss the competition.

Inter Miami edges Atlanta United

0

Leonardo Campana scored his fifth goal and added his second assist as Inter Miami rallied to a 2-1 victory over visiting Atlanta United on Sunday afternoon.

Bryce Duke’s first career MLS goal midway through the second half decided what Miami’s fourth consecutive win in all competitions for the first time in club history and third in a row in MLS play.

Goalkeeper Nick Marsman made six saves to preserve the victory, which also matches the longest MLS win streak for Miami (3-4-1, 10 points) three seasons into their existence.

March loan signing Ronaldo Cisneros scored his first MLS goal to give Atlanta (3-3-2, 11 points) the early lead and snap a scoreless 193-minute stretch.

The visitors led Miami 20-7 in overall shots and 7-2 in efforts on target, but are now winless with a pair of defeats in their last three games.

Campana has started in the center forward role in four consecutive games — including a midweek U.S. Open Cup victory — as Gonzalo Higuain has recovered from a knee injury.

And he’s making a case to win the starting job full-time from Higuain — the club’s all-time leading scorer — with his recent form.

It continued in the 28th minute when the Ecuadorian international took down DeAndre Yedlin’s cross with an exceptional first touch that evaded a defender, then drilled a low finish into the bottom right corner.

Atlanta had the better of the early second-half opportunities. And Marsman made his best stops in those moments, saving first Thiago Almada in the 50th minute and then Cisneros in the 53rd.

In between, Brooks Lennon wasted a promising rebound look of Almada’s miss.

When Miami took the lead in the 64th minute Campana again was the creative influence.

Ariel Lassiter spotted Campana with an excellent diagonal ball to split a pair of Atlanta defenders. But instead of taking a shot from a tight angle, Campana had the presence of mind to slot a cross over to Duke, who had a wide open goal awaiting for his simple finish.

Morello to miss Kentucky Derby due to foot injury

0

Morello will miss the upcoming Kentucky Derby due to a foot injury, trainer Steve Asmussen told reporters on Sunday.

Morello was injured in the Wood Memorial on April 9 when he hit the inside gate at the start. Morello, the favorite in the race, finished sixth.

“We’re going to back off of him,” Asmussen said at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. “The foot isn’t 100 percent. He blew the shoe in the Wood. I spoke with the partners, and just going to do what’s right by him, try to get some healthy foot growing out on him. He’s too good of a horse to not do everything you can for him.”

Pioneer of Medina is expected to replace Morello in the field for the May 7 race.

Cloud9 sign Gambit roster, return to CS:GO

Cloud9 are re-entering Counter-Strike: Global Offensive play, acquiring the roster of Gambit for an undisclosed fee.

The California-based organization withdrew from CS:GO play in March 2021, citing logistical issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When we left the league, we always promised that we would be back,” Cloud 9 wrote in an announcement posted to its website. “This week, we are returning to the scene with an iconic lineup. This collection of players have shown incredible promise and talent, and we are thrilled that we can continue to support their passions and careers. Cloud9 will help the team relocate and get settled, as well as providing the type of high-level support that comes with joining an established and winning organization.”

The new roster will feature players Abay “HObbit” Khassenov, Dmitriy “sh1ro” Sokolov, Sergey “Ax1Le” Rykhtorov, Vladislav “nafany” Gorshkov and Timofey “interz” Iakushin. HObbit is from Kazakhstan with the rest from Russia.

The team is expected to debut under the Cloud9 banner at the PGL Antwerp Major in May. The team won a Legends entry in the competition in a Europe Regional Major Ranking B event, but weren’t allowed to compete under the Gambit banner, instead being called “Players.” A Russian-owned organization, Gambit has been sanctioned because of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Also moving from Gambit are coach Konstantin “groove” Pikiner, analyst Ivan “F_1N” Kochugov and manager Aleksandr “Sweetypotz” Shcherbakov, all from Russia.

“This is an exciting time for Counter Strike, with LAN events returning we’re seeing incredible interest amongst fans. I would definitely say the resurgence is well under way,” said Jack Etienne, the co-founder and CEO of Cloud9.

Perfect streak ends for Japanese sensation Roki Sasaki

0

Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki’s brush with perfection has come to an end.

Sasaki, who plays for the Chiba Lotte Marines, threw 17 straight perfect innings — including a perfect game on April 10 — but gave up a hit to the first batter he faced Sunday.

Shuhei Fukuda of the Orix Buffaloes hit Sasaki’s first pitch, a fastball, to reach base and break a streak of 52 straight outs against Sasaki.

The 20-year-old sensation allowed two earned runs on six hits, three walks and two hit batsmen in five innings and was credited with the win as the Marines beat the Buffaloes 6-3 at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka.

Two weeks ago, Sasaki struck out 19 batters while firing the first perfect game in Nippon Professional Baseball since 1994.

The right-hander tied the Japanese baseball league’s all-time record for strikeouts in a game and also set a record with 13 consecutive strikeouts in that outing.

He followed that game with eight perfect innings on April 17. He struck out 14 before he was lifted after throwing 102 pitches against the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.

Ross Chastain’s late move leads to win at Talladega

Ross Chastain made a last-straightaway pass of leader Erik Jones to win a frantic GEICO 500 NASCAR Cup Series finish at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday afternoon in Talladega, Ala.

Running third off Turn 4 to Jones and then-second-place Kyle Larson, Chastain stayed low and watched Larson go high for the pass and Jones move up for the block.

“I’m always the one going to the top too early and making the mistake,” said Chastain, who celebrated his usual way by smashing a watermelon onto the track and eating some during his interview. “I was like, ‘I’ll just ride at the bottom.’ I’m not going lose the race for us.

“(Jones and Larson) just kept going up and moving out of the way.”

Chastain recorded his second career Cup win by comfortably beating Austin Dillon to the stripe. The Florida native was triumphant for the first time last month at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Kyle Busch finished third, followed by Larson and Martin Truex Jr. in the 188-lap race that featured five cautions at the 2.66-mile venue.

Jones was trying to put a Richard Petty-owned car into Victory Lane for the first time in 280 races — dating back to Aric Almirola’s win at Daytona in 2014.

“We were single file and I felt pretty good about it,” said Jones, who led 25 laps and finished sixth. “Looking back, I wish we’d have stayed on the bottom and let the 1 (of Chastain) push me.

“I didn’t know they were coming with that much speed. Obviously, the defense of the 5 (of Larson) opened the door for the 1.”

As Stage 1 neared its end, Daniel Hemric’s Chevrolet blew up going in to Turn 3, and the No. 16 slowed and was spun by Austin Dillon’s No. 3. Hemric went up the traffic and collect the cars of Chase Briscoe and Chris Buescher.

Bubba Wallace notched the opening stage-win, scoring his first of 2022 and third career at high-banked Talladega, where he won last Fall.

With 31 laps to go in Stage 2, Wallace’s No. 23 Ford made contact with Logano’s car, sparking the race’s biggest incident — nine cars — in Turn 1.

William Byron worked his way to the front and clinched Stage 2, his third stage-win of the season, edging teammate Chase Elliott.

On Lap 129, Wallace pushed Ryan Blaney past Kyle Busch and to the point, and the lead cars logged laps by running nose-to-tail before the final pit stops began with 30 circuits to go.

During the final set of cars being service, polesitter Christopher Bell banged quarter panels with teammate Kyle Busch and spun exiting pit road, but the race remained green.

Denny Hamlin emerged with the lead, followed by Larson, Jones, Byron and Chastain to set up the final run to the checkers.
