Dodgers call up RHPs Michael Grove, Shane Greene

The Los Angeles Dodgers added a pair of right-handers to the active roster Sunday, calling up Michael Grove and Shane Greene.

Right-hander Reyes Moronta and left-hander Garrett Cleavinger were optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Grove was scheduled to make his major league debut in a start Sunday, but he will have to face the Philadelphia Phillies, who have scored 29 runs in the first three games of the four-game series. Grove, 25, was 0-1 with a 2.76 ERA in five starts at Double-A Tulsa.

Greene, 33, has not pitched in the major leagues this season. In eight major league seasons with the New York Yankees (2014), Detroit Tigers (2015-19), Atlanta Braves (2019-21) and Dodgers (2021), he is 23-29 in 341 appearances (33 starts) with a 4.52 ERA.

Moronta 29, had a 2.25 ERA in seven appearances with the Dodgers this season, while Cleavinger had a 3.38 ERA in three appearances. Cleavinger, 28, was recalled Friday when veteran Clayton Kershaw (back) was placed on the injured list.

Astros option INF Niko Goodrum to Triple-A

The Houston Astros opened a spot on their active roster Sunday when they optioned infielder Niko Goodrum to Triple-A Sugar Land.

The move came after utility man Mauricio Dubon officially was added to the roster after a trade from the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.

Goodrum, 30, has struggled in his first season with the Astros, batting .116 with one RBI in 15 games (43 at-bats). In six major league seasons, Goodrum is a .226 hitter with 42 home runs and 152 RBIs.

The Astros added Goodrum in the offseason on a $2.1-million free-agent deal after he was non-tendered by the Detroit Tigers.

Mets RHP Tylor Megill (biceps) placed on 15-day IL

New York Mets right-hander Tylor Megill was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with right biceps inflammation.

The move is retroactive to May 12.

Megill, who will undergo an MRI on Sunday, is coming off a nightmarish start in his last outing. He allowed eight runs on as many hits — including two homers — in a career-low 1 1/3 innings on Wednesday of an 8-3 setback to the Washington Nationals.

Megill, 26, is 4-2 with a 4.41 ERA in seven appearances (all starts) this season.

He owns an 8-8 record with a 4.49 ERA in 25 career appearances (all starts) with the Mets.

Also on Sunday, the Mets promoted Colin Holderman from Triple-A Syracuse and transferred fellow right-hander Trevor May to the 60-day injured list.

Holderman, 26, is poised to make his major league debut. He is 1-0 with a 2.92 ERA in nine games with Syracuse this season.

May, 32, has been sidelined with a stress reaction on the lower portion of his right humerus. He is 1-0 with an 8.64 ERA in eight relief appearances this season. He has allowed 13 hits in just 8 1/3 innings.

May went 7-3 with a 3.59 ERA in 68 relief appearances last season in his first campaign with the Mets following six seasons with the Minnesota Twins.

Padres take control in extra innings to upend Braves

Ha-Seong Kim had an RBI double to start a four-run 11th inning rally, while helping the visiting San Diego Padres to a 7-3 win over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday to take two of three games in the series.

Kim’s second double of the game drove in automatic runner Jake Cronenworth to start the 11th. After Eric Hosmer reached on a fielding error, Kim scored on Jurickson Profar’s fielder’s choice. Will Myers followed with a broken-bat two-run single to expand the lead to four runs.

San Diego’s Nabil Crismatt (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings with four strikeouts to earn the win. Crismatt also had a key defensive play in the 10th when he threw out designated runner William Contreras at third to negate a sacrifice bunt.

Taylor Rogers worked a perfect 11th for the Padres and struck out two to close the game.

Atlanta’s Jackson Stephens (0-1) gave up four runs (two earned) in two innings to take the loss.

The Padres improved to 2-2 in extra-inning games, while the Braves dropped to 0-2.

San Diego also finished off the season series against the Braves with a 4-3 advantage. It was the first time San Diego won the season series since 2015.

Dansby Swanson had a part in Atlanta’s first three runs. He scored the first run in the second inning on Adam Duvall’s RBI single and hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his fourth of the season.

San Diego got its first run in the fifth when the Braves’ Matt Olson couldn’t come up with a pickoff throw at first, allowing Profar to score from second base.

The Padres tied the game 3-3 in the seventh on an RBI single by Myers and Austin Nola’s sacrifice fly to right.

San Diego starter Joe Musgrove pitched six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks, with six strikeouts. Atlanta’s Kyle Wright worked 6 1/3 innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks, with nine strikeouts.

Veteran Robinson Cano, signed Friday as a free agent, made his Padres debut, going 0-for-5 with a strikeout while starting at second base.

Marlins place LHP Jesus Luzardo (forearm) on 15-day IL

The Miami Marlins placed left-handed starter Jesus Luzardo on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a forearm strain in his pitching arm.

The move is retroactive to May 12.

Luzardo, 24, has started six games this season and thrown 29 innings. He is 2-3 with a 4.03 ERA with 41 strikeouts.

He allowed four runs on two hits and four walks in 2 2/3 innings in his most recent start Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Luzardo said he didn’t feel right following his past two starts.

“I just started feeling a little something in the San Diego game but not when I was pitching, just a little soreness after,” Luzardo said, per the Miami Herald. “I kind of backed off a little bit. Arizona didn’t feel anything, but it was sore and tougher to bounce back. We just want to get on top of it so we can get it back to 100 percent.”

Luzardo was scheduled to start Monday against the Washington Nationals. Now, right-hander Cody Poteet is expected to get the nod.

Rays place OF Manuel Margot (hamstring) on injured list

The Tampa Bay Rays placed outfielder Manuel Margot on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right hamstring strain.

Margot is off to a fast start this season. He is batting .348 with three homers and 21 RBIs in 27 games.

Margot, 27, is a .255 career hitter with 47 homers and 219 RBIs in 627 games with the San Diego Padres and Rays.

Also on Sunday, Tampa Bay recalled right-hander Ralph Garza Jr. from Triple-A Durham.

Garza, 28, did not record a decision and registered a 6.00 ERA in three relief appearances this season with the Rays. He is 1-4 with a 3.96 ERA in 30 relief appearances with the Houston Astros, Minnesota Twins and Rays.

At Durham this season, he is 2-2 with a 2.77 ERA in eight games (two starts).

Tigers send RHP Michael Pineda to IL, activate OF Victor Reyes

The Detroit Tigers placed right-hander Michael Pineda on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a fractured right middle finger.

The Tigers reinstated outfielder Victor Reyes from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. He had been sidelined with a left quad strain.

Pineda sustained his injury when he was struck by a line drive off the bat of Ramon Urias during the second inning of Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.

“He’ll go through a battery of tests, see a couple experts and we’ll see how long it takes him to heal up,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “But disappointing news, to say the least.”

Pineda, 33, has a 1-2 record with a 3.22 ERA in five games (all starts) this season. He is 63-56 with a 3.96 ERA in 175 career appearances (174 starts) with the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins and Tigers.

Reyes, 27, went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer for Triple-A Toledo on Friday.

He is batting .261 with four RBIs in 10 games this season with Detroit. He is a career .268 hitter with 13 homers and 77 RBIs in 312 games with the Tigers.

Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright, Yadier Molina on cusp of history vs. Giants

Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina will try to become the winningest pitcher-catcher battery of all time when the St. Louis Cardinals host the San Francisco Giants on Sunday night.

Wainwright (3-3, 3.18 ERA) and Molina will bid for their MLB record 203rd victory together. They are tied with Warren Spahn and Del Crandall of the Milwaukee Braves for first.

“It’s all about the team wins,” Wainwright said. “It’s the most important stat in the game.”

Wainwright will start the finale of this three-game series at Busch Stadium after returning from COVID-19 protocol. The Giants won 8-2 Friday for their sixth straight victory and the Cardinals won 4-0 Saturday for just their second victory in seven games.

“You’re going to have to win ballgames the way we just did, where we pitch well, played good defense, made good decisions and score three, four runs,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. “There will be a stretch where we hit. But you have to win ballgames when you’re not feeling great and that’s what we did today.”

In his most recent start on May 4, the 40-year-old Wainwright blanked the Kansas City Royals on one hit over seven innings in a 10-0 victory.

“When I’m making the other team put the ball in play and not walking five guys and trusting the best defense in the big leagues, I’m going to be fine,” Wainwright said.

Wainwright is 8-8 with a 3.34 ERA in 19 career outings against the Giants, including 17 starts.

The Giants will counter with left-hander Carlos Rodon (4-1, 1.80 ERA), who has allowed two runs or fewer in all six of his starts this season. But Rodon has worked deeper than six innings into a game just once.

“It’s something I’ve started to talk to Carlos about. It is, in part, channeling emotion, channeling frustration,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “But I think at least as much it’s about conserving energy. It takes of effort a lot to be Carlos Rodon on the mound. Every pitch that he delivers is full effort, trying to throw the ball as hard as he can by guys. With that I think comes the responsibility to make sure that you’re not expending energy where you don’t need to.”

Rodon did not face the Cardinals when the teams met last weekend in San Francisco. He is 1-2 with a 4.15 ERA in three career starts against them.

In his most recent start, Rodon earned the victory as the Giants defeated the Colorado Rockies 8-5 on Monday. He allowed two runs on six hits and two walks in six innings.

The Giants made a trade Saturday ahead of Tommy La Stella’s return from his rehabilitation assignment. San Francisco traded utility player Mauricio Dubon to the Houston Astros for catcher/first baseman Michael Papierski.

“I thought the way (Dubon) played this season and the person that he was in our clubhouse this season was a reason that the Astros were interested in him,” Kapler said. “Because he really came together as a man, as a teammate and as a baseball player.”

To fill a near-term need, the Giants activated newly acquired infielder Donovan Walton and started him at second base on Saturday. He had one hit in four at-bats.

Cubs look to beat Diamondbacks, win second straight series

The Chicago Cubs will try to win back-to-back series for the first time this season when they face the Arizona Diamondbacks in the rubber-game of their three-game set on Sunday in Phoenix.

It’s the final game of a six-game western road trip that started with Chicago winning two of three games in San Diego. The Cubs then bounced back from a 4-3 loss to Arizona in Friday night’s series opener to pull out a 4-2 victory on Saturday night.

Left-hander Justin Steele (1-4, 5.32 ERA) will start for the Cubs. He pitched five shutout innings in a 9-0 win over Milwaukee in his first start of the season on April 9 but hasn’t won in five starts since.

Right-hander Humberto Castellanos (2-1, 4.32) will get the nod for Arizona, which will attempt to win its fourth consecutive series.

Steele, coming off a 7-1 loss to Walker Buehler and the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday when he allowed two runs on three hits over four innings, has never faced the Diamondbacks.

Castellanos will face the Cubs for the first time in his career and received a no-decision in his most recent start, a 4-3 victory over Miami on Monday when he allowed three runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Chicago scored three runs in the ninth inning against Arizona closer Mark Melancon on Saturday night to pull out a 4-2 victory.

Catcher Yan Gomes led the way with a home run and also drove in Willson Contreras with the go-ahead run in the ninth.

Contreras began the three-run ninth with an eight-pitch walk against Melancon, took second on a single by Seiya Suzuki, and went to third on a walk to Ian Happ that loaded the bases. Gomes then lined a single to center to drive in Contreras.

J.B. Wendelken walked Rafael Ortega to force in another run, and Jason Heyward made it 4-1 with an RBI groundout.

“Just try and simplify,” Gomes said when asked about his mindset going into the bases-loaded at-bat. “Just trying to put the ball in play, try to drive something into the outfield. Not trying to overdo it. Sometimes in those big moments you can try and overswing it. … Melancon is one of the best closers in the game. You’re just trying to see a good pitch from him.”

Before the three-run ninth, Chicago had just three base runners and a 402-foot solo homer by Gomes off hot Arizona starter Zac Gallen. It was the first homer allowed this season by Gallen, who entered the contest with an ERA of 0.95.

“I don’t think that guy needs to worry too much,” Gomes said. “He’s a tremendous pitcher.”

Cubs manager David Ross wasn’t surprised by Gomes’ big game.

“I put him up there at the top of the order (fourth) because he’s such a quality at-bat,” Ross said. “Doesn’t matter who he’s facing. Doesn’t matter righty, lefty. A really good approach. … He knows the routine, and he knows how to have a quality at-bat.”

Melancon, who leads the team with seven saves, dropped to 0-5 with the loss.

“There’s some things inside the game I felt we could have done better,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. “Moving runners over, just having good, heady at-bats at the right time I thought could have made a total difference in this game.”

Surging Phillies seek to sweep Dodgers

The visiting Philadelphia Phillies have produced a mountain of runs against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first three games of their four-game series.

Now, the Phillies will face a pitcher in his major-league debut in Sunday’s series finale.

The Dodgers will give right-hander Michael Grove the most challenging of opening acts against a Phillies offense that has 29 total runs in three consecutive victories. It’s the most runs the Phillies have scored in three straight games at Dodger Stadium and two off the record by any Los Angeles opponent.

If the Dodgers’ Walker Buehler and Julio Urias had trouble containing the Phillies’ offense over the previous two games, Grove would seem to be in a predicament. But Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is staying upbeat.

“He’s a competitor,” Roberts said. “It’s a fastball that’s in the mid-90s. It’s a 12-to-6 old-school curveball. There’s a changeup in there. … Good competitor. Good guy.”

Grove’s opportunity came about after Los Angeles left-hander Clayton Kershaw went on the injured list Friday with lower-back inflammation. Grove, a second-round draft pick in 2018, was 0-1 with a 2.76 ERA in five starts at Double-A Tulsa.

If he can deliver Sunday afternoon, when warm daytime temperatures tend to make Dodger Stadium play small, he can help the club out of its recent slide.

Los Angeles is on a season-long four-game losing streak and has dropped five of its past six games.

Many of the Phillies’ run producers delivered in Saturday’s 8-3 victory. Jean Segura, Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Rhys Hoskins hit home runs. It was the first time Urias ever allowed four home runs in a game.

Harper has gone 8-for-12 in the series, with seven extra-base hits. He has driven in eight runs. But he will not play Sunday after he receives a scheduled platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow to help mend a small ligament tear.

“You have to stay consistent, you have to stay having good at-bats with good approaches, and I thought we were able to do that (Saturday),” Harper said. “I thought we were able to do that the last couple of nights.

“That’s a great Dodgers team and a great pitching staff full of All-Stars, so as a team, collectively, I think we have done a great job of getting on guys early and battling the best we can.”

Segura’s three-run home run in the first inning Saturday, after he got a day off Friday, extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

“(Harper) is in a great spot, and it’s great to see,” Phillies manager Joe Girardi said. “Obviously he’s so important to our offense, but we have other guys in good spots too, which is really helping out.”

The Phillies will send right-hander Aaron Nola (1-3, 3.83 ERA) to the mound Sunday. In his most recent outing Tuesday at Seattle, he gave up a pair of season highs with nine hits and five runs allowed. Four of the runs were earned. He hasn’t earned a victory since his season debut April 8.

In five career starts against the Dodgers, Nola is 2-0 with a 3.21 ERA.

In his lone start at Dodger Stadium in 2018, he gave up one run over seven innings and picked up the victory.
