Storm withstand late Sky rally for victory

Ezi Magbegor scored a game-high 21 points as the host Seattle Storm held off the Chicago Sky 74-71 on Wednesday night.

Chicago’s Allie Quigley missed a three-pointer at the buzzer that would’ve sent the game to overtime. The Sky scored the game’s final nine points to give them a shot.

For Seattle, two-time WNBA Most Valuable Player Breanna Stewart and reserve guard Epiphanny Prince both returned from a two-game COVID-protocols absence. Stewart scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished two assists. She also had a game-high four steals.

Prince had six points.

Seattle (2-3), which snapped its three-game losing streak, also got six points and a team-high seven assists from Sue Bird. Jewell Loyd added five points and five assists.

However, Loyd shot just 2-of-10 from the floor, missing all four of her three-point tries. Bird shot 2-of-9 from the floor, including 2-of-6 on 3-pointers.

Magbegor, who scored mostly in the post and on fast-break layups, made 9-of-13 shots from the floor.

The Sky (2-2), the reigning league champions, were led by Azura Stevens, who scored 18 points. Courtney Vandersloot had a double-double with a game-high 12 assists and 11 points.

Emma Meesseman and Candace Parker each added 11 points for the Sky, and Quigley had eight points.

Chicago, which had its two-game winning streak broken, was without reigning league-Finals MVP Kahleah Copper, who has just finished her overseas season in Spain.

Seattle led 23-22 after the first quarter. There were three tie scores and two lead changes in that tightly contested period.

The Storm pulled away with a strong second quarter, leading 46-34 at halftime. Seattle never trailed in the second quarter, closing the period on an 11-1 run.

For the first half, Seattle shot a sizzling 51.4 percent from the floor, including 4-for-11 on 3-pointers (36.4 percent).

Magbegor led all first-half scorers with 13 points. Stevens had 11 points for Chicago.

Chicago won the third quarter – but barely. Seattle led 58-49 heading into the fourth.

Seattle led 74-62 with 2:28 left in the game. Parker scored seven points in the final 89 seconds in her attempt to rally the Sky.

Sounders beat Dynamo on lone goal by Ruidiaz

0

Raul Ruidiaz scored the lone goal and the Seattle Sounders recorded back-to-back wins for the first time in the 2022 MLS season after a 1-0 victory over the host Houston Dynamo on Wednesday night.

Stefan Frei made three saves while recording his first shutout of the season for the Sounders (4-5-1, 13 points), who are finding their stride after winning the prestigious CONCACAF Champions League title earlier this month.

Steve Clark made three saves for Houston (4-5-3, 15 points), which is 1-4-1 over its last six matches.

The Dynamo played a man short for 28 minutes in the second half after Adalberto Carrasquilla was given a red card and ejection for drawing his second yellow card of the match in the 54th minute.

But Seattle’s Alex Roldan was carded for tripping in the 82nd minute. That was his second yellow of the match to earn the red and an ejection, leaving the two sides playing 10-on-10 for the final eight minutes of regulation and three stoppage-time minutes.

The Dynamo held a 14-9 edge in shots but the Sounders put four on target to Houston’s three.

The Sounders took the lead in the 28th minute. The sequence began with Jordan Morris to the left of the net, passing the ball through the goal mouth to Roldan on the right. Ruidiaz was nearby and received the pass from Roldan and kicked a close-range right-footer that caromed off the leg of Clark and hit the right goal post before finding the net for his second goal of the season.

Houston had a solid chance to knot the score in the 78th minute but Tyler Pasher’s hard left-footed boot sailed over the crossbar.

Seattle nearly took a 2-0 lead in the 90th minute but Will Bruin’s header was wide to the right.

In the first half, Houston’s Darwin Quintero had two solid chances. His left-footed blast in the 14th minute was too high and his close-range shot in the 23rd minute was saved by Frei.

Loons end losing streak by managing draw with Galaxy

0

Robin Lod scored in the 87th minute as Minnesota United rallied for a 1-1 draw with the LA Galaxy on Wednesday night in Saint Paul, Minn.

Lod connected on a sliding left-footed shot from the top of the center of the box off a crossing pass from D.J. Taylor for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The goal came just four minutes after Sacha Kljestan scored on a penalty shot to give LA a 1-0 lead. The score came after a video replay showed that Minnesota United defender Michael Boxall had deflected Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez’s header in the middle of the box with his left arm for a penalty. Kljestan then fired a right-footed shot into the left corner of the net.

Jonathan Bond made six saves for the Galaxy (6-4-2, 20 points) who were outshot 17-12 including 8-4 in shots on goal.

Dayne St. Clair finished with three saves for Minnesota United (4-5-3, 15 points), which had a three-match losing streak snapped.

Minnesota United, trying to bounce back from a 3-1 loss at Seattle on Sunday, outshot the Galaxy, 12-2, in a scoreless first half and had a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.

Both teams had excellent scoring chances in the first five minutes.

Minnesota defender Bakaye Dibassy flicked a header after an Emanuel Reynoso corner kick just over the crossbar by the near post in the fourth minute.

Just a minute later, Rayan Raveloson of the Galaxy had a straight-on, right-footed shot from inside the box that St. Clair deflected over the crossbar with both hands.

Bond also stopped a Taylor header in the 19th minute off a Franco Fragapane cross, and came up with a big save on a Lod left-footed attempt from the center of the box in the 37th minute.

The Loons also had two other good scoring chances in the half, but Bongokuhle Hlongwane twice fired just wide of the net on right-footed tries.

Warriors slow Luka Doncic, rout Mavs in Game 1

Luka Doncic outscored Andrew Wiggins 20-19 in their head-to-head matchup in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals on Wednesday night.

However, there was no doubt who the winner was.

Wiggins harassed the Dallas Mavericks star into his lowest output of the postseason, and the Golden State Warriors countered with a balanced and high-percentage offensive attack en route to a 112-87 shellacking in the opener of the best-of-seven series in San Francisco.

Game 2 is scheduled for Friday in San Francisco, where Golden State, seeking its sixth trip to the NBA Finals in the past eight years, has gone 7-0 this postseason.

“We did what we were supposed to do — protect home court, win the first game,” said Warriors star Stephen Curry, the game’s leading scorer with 21 points. “We had a specific game plan coming in, and for the most part, we executed it. It’s going to take that same effort three more times to beat this team.”

The game plan featured handcuffing Doncic on one end and attacking him on the other. It was a two-way success.

After having averaged 29 points on 46.9 percent shooting in the opening round against the Utah Jazz, Doncic then stepped up to average 32.6 points on 47.6 percent shooting in the Western semifinals against Phoenix. On Wednesday, though, he was held four points below his previous low this postseason while hitting just six of his 18 shots.

He wasn’t alone in his offensive miseries. The Mavericks shot just 36 percent overall and 22.9 percent on 3-point attempts, missing 37 of 48.

“They did a great job,” Doncic said of the Warriors. “Of course we could do things better. In the first quarter, we had a lot of good looks. The second quarter, too. But not in the second half.”

Taking advantage of the Mavericks’ poor shooting, the Warriors never trailed over the final 45 minutes while taking a 1-0 lead for the third consecutive time this postseason.

All seven Warriors who played at least 13 minutes scored in double figures, with Curry and Wiggins getting plenty of help. Jordan Poole contributed 19 points to the cause, while Klay Thompson had 15, and Kevon Looney, Draymond Green and Otto Porter Jr. scored 10 each.

Golden State shot 56.1 percent from the field, led by Looney’s 5-for-5, Porter’s 5-for-7 and Poole’s 8-for-12.

Curry completed a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds. Green added nine boards to Golden State’s 51-35 advantage.

The scoring might have been balanced, but afterward the talk was focused on one man: Wiggins.

“He’s just showing everybody what he’s capable of in terms of impacting the game,” Curry said. “He stepped up. I’m happy for him. Eight years in the league. This is his moment.”

Added Warriors coach Steve Kerr, “Wiggs was fantastic. Doncic is as difficult a cover as there is in the league. We just asked Wiggs to try to hound him, stay in front of him, keep pressure on him. He did a fantastic job.”

Doncic went just 3-for-10 on 3-point attempts, as did teammate Reggie Bullock, who finished with 12 points.

Spencer Dinwiddie had 17 points off the bench and Jalen Brunson scored 14 for the Mavericks, who lost Game 1 for the third straight series. In fact, they dropped their first three road games of the Phoenix series by an average of 19 points before stunning the defending Western Conference champs in Game 7 on Sunday.

“It’s one game,” Doncic said. “That’s what the playoffs are all about. If you lose by one or you lose by 40, it’s just a loss. We’ve got to move right to Game 2 now.”

Union, Inter Miami play to scoreless tie

0

The Philadelphia Union continues to keep things even, playing to a 0-0 tie with visiting Inter Miami CF on Wednesday for their fifth-consecutive tied game.

Union goalkeeper Andre Blake made two saves, while Inter Miami goalie Drake Callender had eight saves.

The Union’s streak of five-consecutive ties goes back to a 1-1 deadlock with CF Montreal on April 23. The club followed that with three more ties to open May, the most recent Saturday by a 1-1 score against the rival New York Red Bulls.

With an 0-1-5 mark over their last six games, the Union (5-1-6, 21 points) have not won an MLS game since a 1-0 home victory over the Columbus Crew on April 9. They were shut out for the first time this season.

Inter Miami (3-6-3, 12 points) played to their second-consecutive tie after finishing in a 2-2 deadlock with D.C. United on Saturday. Inter Miami is 0-2-2 since producing a three-game winning streak last month for their only victories of the season.

Inter Miami leading scorer Leonardo Campana had a quality scoring chance in the 21st minute after a Union turnover, but he hit the left post with a low shot.

The short-handed Union could not find enough offense without forwards Julian Carranza and Mikael Uhre. Carranza, who is on loan to Philadelphia from Inter Miami, was not available due to terms of the loan. Uhre was out for the third-consecutive game with a quadriceps injury.

The Union also were without midfielder Jose Martinez, who was suspended for the game because of yellow-card accumulation.

The Union’s Daniel Gazdag had a quality scoring chance in the 84th minute, but his deflected shot was saved on the far post by Callender.

Philadelphia remained unbeaten at home this season (3-0-4) and is the only Eastern Conference club to have given up single-digit goals so far this season with nine allowed. Inter Miami is now 1-4-1 on the road.

Flames take series opener vs. Oilers in high-scoring affair

The host Calgary Flames set a NHL playoff record with two goals 51 seconds into the game and eventually claimed a 9-6 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday to open their Western Conference second-round series.

After the Flames blew a four-goal lead, Rasmus Andersson broke a 6-6 tie three minutes into the third period with a wrist shot from the right faceoff dot for the winning goal to cap a three-point game.

Matthew Tkachuk’s second goal of the game at 8:55 of the third period, a breakaway tally, provided the insurance tally, and he netted an empty-netter to complete his first career playoff hat trick and finish the highest-scoring playoff game in Battle of Alberta history.

The 15 goals tied for the fifth-highest total in playoff history. The last postseason game to feature at least 15 goals was a 9-6 Flames loss to the Los Angeles Kings on April 29, 1993.

Calgary matched its franchise playoff record with nine goals, a feat also accomplished in 1988, 1993 and 1995.

Tkachuk recorded the Flames’ first postseason hat trick since Theo Fleury had one in 1995.

Blake Coleman scored twice, while Elias Lindholm, Andrew Mangiapane and Brett Ritchie added singles for the Flames. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom made 22 saves.

Zach Hyman scored twice and Connor McDavid produced one goal and three assists for the Oilers. Evan Bouchard, Leon Draisaitl and Kailer Yamamoto also scored. Starting goalie Mike Smith was pulled after surrendering three goals on 10 shots. Mikko Koskinen took the net and stopped 32 shots.

Game 2 of the best-of-seven series will be Friday in Calgary.

Lindholm opened the scoring 26 seconds into the clash when he found the mark from the top of the left circle. Mangiapane then buried a chance from the slot at the 51-second mark, eclipsing the record of 54 seconds held by the 1993 Pittsburgh Penguins.

Ritchie’s goal at the 6:05 mark chased Smith, and McDavid put the Oilers on the board at 7:41 of the opening frame.

Coleman scored his first of the night 45 seconds into the second period — the first time in franchise history the Flames have scored in the opening minute of the first two periods in a playoff game — and then he made it 5-1 with a deflection at 6:10 of the frame.

Bouchard replied exactly one minute later, but Tkachuk’s power-play goal at 8:24 of the middle stanza made it 6-2, and the Flames appeared free and clear.

The Oilers roared back. Hyman netted his first of the game before the midway point of the second period and then made it 6-4 a few minutes later with a rebound tally.

Draisaitl scored with 38.1 seconds remaining in the second period, and then Yamamoto’s rebound tally 88 seconds into the third period evened the score 6-6.

Mavs’ Game 7 celebrations draw $50K fine from NBA

The Dallas Mavericks’ celebrations during a Game 7 win over the top-seeded Phoenix Suns in the first round of the playoffs led to a $50,000 fine from the NBA on Wednesday.

The league announced that the Mavericks violated regulations dictating “team bench decorum” as Dallas was rolling to a 123-90 win at Phoenix on Sunday.

According to the NBA’s statement, “On multiple occasions, several players and a member of the coaching staff stood for an extended period in the Mavericks’ team bench area, stood away from the team bench, and were on or encroaching upon the playing court.”

The sanction led to a bemused response from Dallas coach Jason Kidd ahead of his team’s Western Conference finals opener on Wednesday night in San Francisco.

“I know about the fine. Just trying to figure out what we did wrong to get the fine,” Kidd said. “So, we’ll see (Thursday) why we got fined. I mean, who complained? It was a blowout, so I don’t think the fans were complaining. I thought the guys did what they were supposed to do. They were cheering on their guys. So we’ll find out what the fine is. But it is what it is.”

The league previously fined the Mavericks $25,000 for the same issue during Game 2 of the Suns series — a contest Dallas lost 129-109 in Phoenix.

Stoppage-time goal lets Red Bulls draw with Fire

0

Patryk Klimala scored in the first minute of second-half stoppage time as the New York Red Bulls remained winless at home but rallied for a 3-3 draw with the Chicago Fire in an action-packed contest Wednesday night in Harrison, N.J.

Klimala scored his third goal this season against Chicago when he got a pass from Omir Fernandez and slipped through the center of the box. Klimala then finished it off by blasting a left-footed shot into the center of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Klimala’s goal occurred two minutes after Xherdan Shaqiri gave Chicago a 3-2 lead with a left-footed shot from the middle of the box that went into the bottom left corner.

The Red Bulls (5-2-5, 20 points) are just 0-2-4 at home but improved to 2-0-4 in their past six games.

Lewis Morgan and Cameron Harper also scored for the Red Bulls, who rallied late for the second time this season against Chicago (2-5-5, 11 points)

Chris Mueller and Wyatt Omsberg also scored for Chicago, which is 0-5-3 in its past eight games.

New York goalie Carlos Coronel made three saves while Chicago’s Gabriel Slonina stopped one shot.

New York took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Morgan converted a penalty kick by burying a right-footed shot over Slonina that wound up in the bottom right corner.

Mueller leveled the game with a spectacular individual move. He corralled the ball while being surrounded by four defenders, made a move around New York’s Tom Edwards and blasted a right-footed shot well over Coronel’s head into the top right corner.

The Fire dominated in the opening minutes of the second half and took a 2-1 lead four minutes in when Omsberg slipped past Fernandez and headed the ball into the net from the left side of the box after getting a headed pass by Jhon Duran.

Chicago’s lead lasted nine minutes, until Harper got a soft pass from Fernandez at the left side of the box and scored on a right-footed shot when Slonina whiffed on the leaping save, allowing the ball to reach the center of the net.

Hurricanes tie it late, beat Rangers in OT in Game 1

Ian Cole scored 3:12 into overtime to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 2-1 win against the New York Rangers in Game 1 of their second-round Eastern Conference playoff series on Wednesday in Raleigh, N.C.

Cole, who had two goals during the regular season, scored on a slap shot from the right point that hit the stick of New York defenseman Ryan Lindgren along the way to the net.

Sebastian Aho scored the tying goal late in regulation for Carolina, and Antti Raanta made 27 saves. The Hurricanes won the Metropolitan Division title by six points over the Rangers this season.

Filip Chytil scored early in the game and Igor Shesterkin made 24 saves for the Rangers, who have advanced past the first round for the first time since 2017.

The Hurricanes finally got a shot past Shesterkin with 2:23 left in the third period to tie the score 1-1.

Aho, who had hit the post 24 seconds earlier, drove to the net as he received a pass from Seth Jarvis. He cut in front of Shesterkin, who stuck out his right pad to stop Aho’s first attempt, but Aho pushed the puck into the net.

Chytil scored at 7:07 of the first period.

Shortly before the goal, the Hurricanes had dumped the puck in the New York zone. Shesterkin stopped the puck behind the net and sent it up the wall.

Carolina’s Vincent Trocheck and Tony DeAngelo were both along the wall, but neither could keep the puck in the New York zone before DeAngelo tried to pass it back to Jaccob Slavin in the neutral zone, where it was stolen by Alexis Lafreniere.

Lafreniere brought the puck down the left side before centering it to Chytil, who scored with a one-timer before Raanta could slide over.

The Rangers out-shot Carolina, 12-8, in the first period.

The Rangers were outshot 8-0 over the first 11:19 of the third, although Kaapo Kakko had two good chances to pad New York’s lead down the stretch.

The Hurricanes turned the puck over in the neutral zone, leading to a two-on-one, but Kakko stumbled as he shot the puck. He then missed an open net with 6:44 remaining.

Game 2 is set for Friday night, also in Raleigh.

Pac-12 to change conference title game after NCAA ruling

The Pac-12 will feature its two top teams in its conference title game rather than one team per division after a ruling Wednesday that cleared the way for conferences to have more flexibility with their decisions.

The NCAA Division I Council announced that it would relax restrictions on conference title games within college football. Conferences that previously had to include two division winners in their title games no longer will be required to do so.

The Pac-12 acted quickly after the announcement, saying that its conference title games would involve the two teams with the highest winning percentage regardless of whether they played in the same division. This change will start with the 2022 season.

“Our goal is to place our two best teams in our Pac-12 Football Championship Game, which we believe will provide our conference with the best opportunity to optimize CFP invitations and ultimately win national championships,” said Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff in a news release. “Today’s decision is an important step towards that goal and immediately increases both fan interest in, and the media value of, our Football Championship Game.”

The Atlantic Coast Conference could follow suit, with changes most likely to take effect in the 2023 season.

“The two drivers to this: One, is the opportunity for our student-athletes to play every school in the ACC over a four-year period of time,” ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said last week. “The other piece of it is, I’ve always felt that was a local decision about how you handle your conference. You’re seeing that across multiple conferences that they’d like to dictate what their championship structure looks like, and which will lead into eventually an expanded football playoff.

“You want your two best teams to have a chance to play at the end of the year for a lot of reasons.”
