Workday’s Q1 Earnings Preview

0

Deutsche Bank analysts shared their outlook on Workday, Inc. (NASDAQ:WDAY) ahead of the company’s upcoming Q1 earnings results, expected to be reported on May 26.
The analysts anticipate Q1 results/guidance to be better than feared, with their checks suggesting Q4 momentum very likely continued into Q1. According to the analysts, the company continues to benefit from distributed work dynamics, a tight labor backdrop, and a supportive environment for cloud software, at least for now.
Resource constraints and implementation lead times within Workday’s partner ecosystem have begun to normalize from peak levels in late 2021. The analysts said May is reportedly off to a strong start, and while partners don’t foresee macro weakness impacting Q2, some acknowledge elevated risk into H2.

Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal on French Open quarterfinal collision course

The men’s side of the French Open is full of potentially intriguing matchups, but none bigger than a prospective quarterfinal clash between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

The draw for the French Open, which begins Sunday, was held Thursday in Paris. As expected, world No. 1 Djokovic is the top seed, followed by Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nadal.

Rounding out the top 10 are teen sensation Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, Andrey Rublev of Russia, Casper Ruud of Norway, Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime and Cameron Norrie of Great Britain.

With 41 Grand Slam wins between them, Djokovic is the defending champion and Nadal has 13 French Open titles, but they’ll have work to do to reach a showdown.

Djokovic, of Serbia, opens against Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan. Djokovic possibly could meet Diego Schwartzman of Argentina or Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round.

For Nadal, the Spaniard’s first-round meeting will be with Jordan Thompson of Australia, and Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland could loom in the second round. The 37-year-old Wawrinka won the 2015 French Open and is on the comeback path from injuries.

If Nadal, who is coping with a recurring foot injury, can make it to the fourth round, ninth-seeded Auger-Aliassime or 17th seed Reilly Opelka could oppose him.

Medvedev, of Russia, faces Facundo Bagnis of Argentina in the opening round, while Germany’s Zverev drew a still-to-be-determined qualifier.

Tsitsipas, of Greece, will open against Italian Lorenzo Musetti.

Alcaraz, who is in Zverev’s quarter of the draw, could face either Djokovic or Nadal in what would be a blockbuster semifinal should it occur.

Epicenter gains attention at Preakness with no Triple Crown in play

0

Epicenter, the runner-up in the Kentucky Derby, will head to the post as the favorite for the 147th Preakness Stakes on Saturday afternoon in Baltimore.

However, there are plenty of interesting storylines to follow as nine horses vie for the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.

The Preakness will be without Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike, whose owners opted to rest their horse in favor of the Belmont Stakes on June 11 in Elmont, N.Y. That assured that there will not be a Triple Crown winner for the 42nd time in the past 44 years.

The 1 3/16-mile race at venerable and crumbling Pimlico Race Course carries a total purse of $1.65 million, with the winner earning 60 percent ($990,000).

Rich Strike, who went off at odds of 80-1 in the Derby after earning a spot in the field on the day before the race when another horse was scratched, was the biggest longshot to win the race since 1913.

The choice not to enter Rich Strike in the Preakness places the focus on Epicenter, who finished second at Churchill Downs on May 7. Rich Strike entered the Derby after wins at the Louisiana Derby and Risen Star Stakes at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

Epicenter, who has been posted as the 6-5 favorite for Saturday’s race, is trained by Steve Asmussen, who has won more races than any other North American thoroughbred trainer. Those victories include the 2007 Preakness with Curlin and the 2009 Preakness with filly Rachel Alexandra.

Epicenter would have likely been the favorite in the Preakness even if Rich Strike had entered. This will be Epicenter’s eighth career start, but Asmussen thinks of the first seven, and even the Preakness, as just a warm-up for the horse’s career on the track.

“It’s a very unique opportunity and Epicenter has a very nice resume, and we would definitely like to add to it,” Asmussen said. “We expect this is just the beginning of his racing career. … How he runs back in two weeks, and how he comes out of a race back in two weeks is yet to be determined.”

Early Voting, trained by Chad Brown, is the 7-2 second choice in the field of nine. Brown and Early Voting’s owner Seth Klarman opted to skip the Kentucky Derby and point their horse to the Preakness. Klarman grew up just a few blocks from Pimlico.

Early Voting’s most recent race was a runner-up finish in the Wood Memorial in New York.

“We think some aspects set up for us,” Klarman said of Early Voting. “We may or may not be the speed, which would probably be an advantage at Pimlico; it always has been. But no matter what, I think we have a solid shot, and we’re super excited to see what happens.”

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas will try to capture his seventh Preakness with Kentucky Oaks-winning filly Secret Oath, the 9-2 third choice in the morning line. Secret Oath finished third when she ran against male horses as the favorite in the Arkansas Derby.

“It’s her efficiency of motion and acceleration,” the 86-year-old Lukas said of Secret Oath. “She’s got a devastating kick.”

The aforementioned Rachel Alexandra and Swiss Skydiver in 2020 were the only fillies to win the Preakness since 1924.

“If you rough up a filly, they don’t handle it very well, so we don’t want to put them in that situation at all,” Lukas added. “We don’t take it lightly, but everything said, we feel pretty strong now that (Secret Oath) can be competitive here.”

Fourth-place Kentucky Derby finisher Simplification is the 6-1 fourth choice in the morning line. Simplification had a similar stalking trip to Rich Strike in the Derby but was bumped twice in the final furlong.

Target Shares Down 30% This Week, Q1 Results Review

0

Target (NYSE:TGT) shares lost almost 30% this week as a result of reported disappointing Q1 results, with EPS of $2.19 missing the street estimate of $3.07. Revenue came in at $24.83 billion, compared to the Street estimate of $24.47 billion. For full-year 2022, the company anticipates revenue growth in the low-to mid-single digits.
RBC Capital analysts provided their views on the company, lowering their estimates and price target, but believing the stock sell-off is overdone.
Similar to Walmart, Target beat on comp, but experienced significant margin contraction year-over-year. While lingering cost headwinds and increased uncertainty around the financial health of the US consumer warrant numbers coming down, the analysts remain of the view that the company is structurally a faster growing, higher margin business post-strategic reset. As such the analysts thinks the company would weather any potential economic downturn better than they have historically.
The analysts lowered 2022/2023 EPS estimates to $10.57/$13.27 from $14.59/$15.84, and moved their target to $239 from $294 while maintaining the outperform rating.

Celebrity Basketball legend’s eldest son LeBron Raymone ‘Bronny’ James Jr. shared photos of his prom date. The young basketball player’s Instagram post on Sunday was flooded with comments. Most of the comments on his photos called him out for taking a white girl to the prom. Some of the comments were also rude. The young man received support from Robert Griffin III and a few other users.

On Sunday, the junior hooper attended the dance at his school Sierra Canyon School with a senior Peyton Gelfuso. He wore a tuxedo with a blue and black pattern. He matched it with blue suede shoes. His date Peyton wore a white halter dress, covered with crystals and feathers, with a large slit and white high heels. Bronny drove his date to the school dance in a black Mercedes AMG GT Coupe.

Some social media users began criticizing Bronny for not taking someone like him to the dance. They didn’t like the fact that his date was light skinned. They made their displeasure apparent in their comments. One user was also rude and posted “gold digger” lyrics by celebrity rapper Kanye West and the implication was obvious.

However, there were other social media users who defended the upcoming basketball star. Some of them told the trolls that they were a part of the problem in society today. One Twitter user asked others to let Bronny enjoy his prom without him or his date getting thrashed.

Celebrity Robert Griffin III, fired back at all the racist and hate comments. He said, “LEAVE THESE KIDS ALONE.” He extended his support to the young couple, on Wednesday.

RG3 is married to Estonian athlete Grete Sadeiko. The American football quarterback has also faced criticism for not marrying a black woman. He shut down criticism saying, “It’s not anti-black to love someone outside your race.” His support for Bronny is expected as he has faced trolls himself. Basketball legend LeBron James has remained silent on the issue, up to the time of publication of the article.

Why is Under Armour CEO Patrik Frisk stepping down

0
Twitter Image Patrik Frisk

On Wednesday, Under Armour announced that their president and chief executive officer Patrik Frisk would be stepping down and chief operating officer Colin Browne would be the interim CEO, effective June 1. The announcement was made after the company released a disappointing quarterly report. The stock fell by over three percent in extended trading.

Although no reason has been given by either the company or Frisk, it was reportedly a decision that was reached mutually. Frisk will remain as a consultant through September 1. The stepping down decision was unexpected. Frisk joined the Baltimore based company in 2017 and has been leading it since more than two years. He had become the CEO on Jan 1, 2020, replacing founder Kevin Plank. He has not responded when asked for the reason of his departure, by multiple outlets.

In a statement on Wednesday, Frisk said that he was “extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished as a team.” He said that they had strengthened the iconic brand and had “significantly” solidified Under Armour’s operations.

His tenure, during the pandemic, saw the CEO take steps to bring about a turnaround by limiting discounts offered to third party retailers in order to boost profit. He also tried to make it a high end brand comparable with rivals Nike and Lululemon.

Under Armour has reported a loss in the transition quarter as it is shifting its fiscal year. Supply chain issues affected the brand and the recent Zero Covid policy in China decreased demand. This led to a disappointing outlook for fiscal year 2023, from April 1, 2022 through March 31, 2023.

The announcement also said that the board would be looking for a permanent replacement, internally and externally. Under Armor has seen close to 50 percent drop in share price this year, while rival Nike saw a drop of more than 34 percent.

On Wednesday evening, founder Kevin Plank told CNBC in a phone interview that the company will enter a new phase of growth by upgrading its e-commerce operations. He also said that he was not being considered for the role of CEO, as of now.

Coinbase Unveils Web3 Products for Mobile App Customers

0

Exchange company Coinbase Global, Inc. has introduced multiple Web3 products, including a decentralized app (DApp), decentralized finance (DeFi) wallet, and a browser for a restricted group of its mobile app customers.

For a select group of Coinbase mobile app customers, Web3 application functionality, including a hot wallet and browser, has been rolled out. These users will be able to use the app to access Ethereum-based DApps like Uniswap and OpenSea.

Web3 is a decentralized version of the internet that uses blockchain-based technologies. Blockchain developers, machine learning specialists, app developers, front-end and back-end developers, user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) designers, data analytics professionals, and content writers are all needed by companies that want to develop apps and Web3 platforms.

Eligible users will be able to trade on nonfungible token (NFT) marketplaces, make swaps on decentralized exchanges (DEXs), and interact with DeFi lending protocols to borrow and lend funds, according to Coinbase’s director of product management Rishi Dean’s announcement on May 17.

Along with the mobile browser that provides access to DApps, there is a hot wallet that customers can use to exchange funds, he said. Unlike some decentralized hot wallet apps, the Coinbase hot wallet will come with a co-custodial setup.

Dean stated that sharing custody of the keys is a security feature designed to protect users from device-related problems. This means that the private key for the wallet will be stored by the company and can be personally stored by the user, the director stated.

The wallet and DApp functionality are operated with multi-party computation (MPC) technology, which secures the privacy of senders and receivers while ensuring the accuracy of a transaction.

Coinbase’s expanded wallet functionality is promising for Web3 developers who may find it difficult to onboard new users to show off their work. The exchange boasts about 90 million registered users, according to Statista, the statistics portal for market data.

This is the second major Web3 product rollout this month. The exchange launched its long-awaited Coinbase NFT marketplace on May 4 to a showing of $75,000 in sales volume from 150 transactions on its first day.

Baseball celebrity Alex Rodriguez has contributed to a 30-million funding round of the Professional Fighters League (PFL). On Thursday, the company that promotes mixed martial arts announced his investment along with that of Waverley Capital, a media investment firm, led by Edgar Bronfman Jr. Although the terms of investment have not been disclosed, this investment has to be substantial as the former New York Yankees star will have a seat on the company’s board.

Last month, Alex Rodriguez invested in NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves. He became a co-owner of the team along with Marc Lore, a former e-commerce executive at Walmart. Both of them reportedly paid $1.5 billion to purchase the franchise. They also have a stake in WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx.

The 46-year old baseball shortstop has also invested in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) branded gyms, which is the fitness arm of the the UFC. According to Spotrac Rodriguez earned over $450 million before he retired, in 2016. The website that tracks sports contracts estimated his earnings in his 22-season career with the MLB. After retirement from baseball, Alex Rodriguez worked on several media platforms including baseball analyst at Disney’s ESPN and more.

In a statement Rodriguez said, “I love the global reach of MMA. The PFL continues to build and innovate for fans, media and fighters, and there is massive demand in the market place.”

In an interview with CNBC, PFL founder and chairman Donn Davis said that Rodriguez and PFL had a “mutual attraction.” He also said that the company is planning to expand and form leagues in Europe and Mexico.

PFL is a single entity controlled by private investors such as Mark Lerner, who is the owner of Washington Nationals and Ray Lewis, a former NFL star. Investment firms such as Ares Capital and Elysian Park Ventures have also invested in the entity.

The league conducts regular season and post season competitions. The matches are broadcast by ESPN, owned by Disney and are sponsored by several companies including DraftKings.
