Dodgers defeat Phillies to extend win streak to six

Freddie Freeman had three hits and two RBIs, Julio Urias tossed five scoreless innings and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the host Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 on Friday.

Trea Turner and Will Smith each added one hit and two walks apiece for the Dodgers, who won their sixth in a row. Justin Turner also walked twice.

Urias (3-3), who threw 80 pitches, gave up only two hits, struck out five and walked none. Craig Kimbrel allowed an infield single to Johan Camargo to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth but recorded the final out, earning his eighth save in eight opportunities.

The Phillies managed seven hits and avoided being shut out on consecutive nights when J.T. Realmuto hit an RBI double in the ninth. Odubel Herrera struck out to end the game with runners on first and third.

Kyle Schwarber produced a pair of doubles and Camargo added two hits for Philadelphia.

Bryce Harper missed his fifth consecutive game after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow on Sunday in Los Angeles.

Phillies starter Ranger Suarez (4-2) lasted only three innings and allowed five hits and three runs to go along with five strikeouts and two walks.

The Dodgers went ahead 1-0 in the first inning when Justin Turner hit a soft RBI groundout to first base. Suarez escaped further trouble when he struck out Chris Taylor on his 34th pitch with runners on second and third.

Freeman laced a two-run single to center in the second for a 3-0 advantage.

Roman Quinn singled to right with two outs in the third for the Phillies’ first hit.

Trea Turner doubled with one out in the fifth to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Smith and Justin Turner each walked to load the bases. Taylor popped out to second and Cody Bellinger flied out to center to end the threat.

With the Phillies’ offense struggling, Camargo bunted for a single to begin the eighth. Herrera and Quinn each struck out and Rhys Hoskins walked. Alec Bohm then lined out to right.

Trea Turner added a sacrifice fly in the ninth for a 4-0 lead.

Orioles rally three times, finally prevail over Rays in 13

Rougned Odor belted a game-winning home run in the 13th inning as the Baltimore Orioles beat the visiting Tampa Bay Rays 8-6 to end a long hex Friday night.

The Orioles snapped a 15-game losing streak in matchups vs. the Rays.

The Rays thought they took the lead in the 13th on Kevin Kiermaier’s single, but left fielder Austin Hays threw out Wander Franco at the plate. The initial call was safe before it was overturned via replay review.

The Orioles lost six straight games prior to a victory Thursday night against the New York Yankees.

Nick Vespi (1-0) notched the win in his first outing in the major leagues, throwing two scoreless innings. Ralph Garza Jr. (0-1) took the loss.

Mike Zunino’s three-run home run in the fifth inning provided earlier offense for the Rays, who had won five of their previous seven games overall.

Kiermaier drove in the go-ahead run with an 11th-inning single for the Rays. Hays matched it with a two-out single in the bottom of the inning.

Both teams scored two runs in the 10th inning. Tampa Bay appeared in good shape when Brett Phillips drove in the go-ahead run with a double and then scored an insurance run on Yandy Diaz’s single.

The Orioles benefitted from reliever Matt Wisler’s wildness in the 10th, with the runner placed at second base and then Hays and Trey Mancini drawing walks. Anthony Santander tied the game with a two-run single.

But Wisler somehow avoided further damage. Pinch runner Ryan McKenna was thrown out at the plate on trying to score on Tyler Nevin’s one-out grounder to shortstop Franco.

This was the first meeting between the teams since the Rays posted a season-opening three-game sweep at home. Tampa Bay went 18-1 against Baltimore last season and also won six of the last seven 2020 matchups.

Orioles starter Tyler Wells breezed through four innings without allowing a hit before Zunino dinged him in the fifth. That came following an infield single and walk.

The Rays were in fine shape through six innings behind Jalen Beeks’ two innings as the starter and then Ryan Yarbrough kept Baltimore off the scoreboard for the next four innings.

But Yarbrough gave up Nevin’s double and Ramon Urias’ single to begin the seventh, so he was replaced by Brooks Raley. A wild pitch and an error on left fielder Randy Arozarena gave the Orioles a boost and Mancini’s two-out single tied the score.

Arozarena went 4-for-5 with an intentional walk at the plate and Kiermaier had three hits.

Marcell Ozuna, Braves power past Marlins

Atlanta’s Marcell Ozuna homered for the third straight game, one of three home runs hit by the visiting Braves en route to a 5-3 win over the Miami Marlins to open a three-game set on Friday.

Dansby Swanson and Travis d’Arnaud added solo home runs for the Braves, who have 50 long balls for the season, the fifth highest-total in the majors. Ozuna went 2-for-5 and extended his hitting streak to seven games, during which he is batting .310 (9-for-29).

Atlanta’s Charlie Morton (3-3) turned in his third consecutive solid outing. Morton, making his 300th career appearance, pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

Collin McHugh (two-thirds of an inning), Spencer Strider (one inning) and A.J. Minter (one inning) each followed with a scoreless appearance. Will Smith worked around a leadoff hit batsman in the ninth inning to earn his second save.

Miami starter Trevor Rogers (2-5) was knocked out after four innings. He allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts. His career record against Atlanta dropped to 0-5.

Louis Head (three innings), Dylan Floro (one inning) and Steven Okert (one inning) held the Braves scoreless and limited them to one hit over the final five innings.

Atlanta scored three times in the first inning. Ozzie Albies drove in the first run with a single and Ozuna followed with a two-run homer to left, his eighth. It was the first home run all season by an Atlanta batter in the No. 5 spot in the lineup.

Swanson hit a solo homer in the second inning, his fifth.

Miami cut the lead to 4-1 in the second on an RBI single from Bryan De La Cruz, but the Braves got the run back in the third on d’Arnaud’s solo homer, his fourth.

Miami’s Jorge Soler, who had missed the previous three games with a sore back, hit a 413-foot two-run shot, his eighth, to make it a 5-3 game in the sixth. The Marlins had runners at second and third but McHugh stranded both.

Atlanta’s Ronald Acuna Jr. went 2-for-4 and extended his on-base streak to 27 games with a game-opening double.

Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright shuts down Pirates again

Yadier Molina drove in two runs and Adam Wainwright continued his mastery of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the visiting St. Louis Cardinals’ 5-3 win on Friday.

Dylan Carlson and Harrison Bader each had an RBI single for the Cardinals, who had lost two straight.

Wainwright (5-3) extended his scoreless streak against the Pirates to 38 1/3 innings, dating to last June 26, before giving up a run in the seventh. In his seven innings, he gave up the one run and four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

The right-hander improved to 23-7 in his career vs. Pittsburgh.

Giovanny Gallegos struck out all five batters he faced for his eighth save.

Nolan Gorman, who started at second base in his major league debut for the Cardinals, went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Michael Chavis homered and Bryan Reynolds hit an RBI single for the Pirates, who lost for the third time in four games.

Pittsburgh starter Zach Thompson (2-4), who had never faced St. Louis, allowed one run and five hits in five innings. He struck out two and walked one.

In the first inning, St. Louis’ Tommy Edman hit a leadoff single to left. An out later, Paul Goldschmidt singled to left. Nolan Arenado flied out to right, and Goldschmidt was retired on the bases for a double play, but not before Edman scored for a 1-0 lead.

Pirates reliever Heath Hembree entered in the sixth and walked Arenado with one out before Juan Yepez singled to left. Hembree was pulled for Anthony Banda, who walked Gorman to load the bases. Carlson’s base hit to center brought home Arenado to push the Cardinals’ lead to 2-0.

Molina followed with a single to left to drive in Yepez and Gorman, and Carlson scored on Bader’s single to make it 5-0.

In the seventh, Chavis lined a homer to left, his fourth, to cut the gap to 5-1 and end Wainwright’s scoreless string against Pittsburgh.

In the eighth vs. Cardinals reliever Genesis Cabrera, Rodolfo Castro reached on Arenado’s throwing error from third. Ben Gamel singled to center, Ke’Bryan Hayes singled to left to load the bases and Reynolds hit a run-scoring base hit to left. Yoshi Tsutsugo’s fielder’s choice brought Gamel home to slice the margin to 5-3.

Gallegos then entered and fanned Diego Castillo and Chavis to end the rally.

After winning two from Cubs, D-backs look for more

A week ago, the Chicago Cubs used a series victory at Arizona to kick off their longest winning streak of the season.

Now, the Diamondbacks hope they are headed for similar success at the expense of the Cubs.

Following an offensive breakout, the visiting Diamondbacks eye a third consecutive victory over the Cubs on Saturday. A fourth win in a row on Sunday would match Arizona’s longest winning streak of the season.

That’s heady stuff for a team that entered the series amid a six-game losing streak in last place in the National League West.

After dropping the opener of last weekend’s series at Arizona, Chicago won the next two and the following two at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks’ 4-2 loss to the Cubs on May 14 was the first of six consecutive defeats.

However, after opening the four-game series in Chicago by winning 3-1 on Thursday, the Diamondbacks used a season-high seven home runs — three by Josh Rojas — to beat the Cubs 10-6 on Friday. Arizona had averaged 3.3 runs over the previous nine contests.

“You flush the negatives (from the losing streak) and you come into this series with a fresh mindset,” Rojas said, according to the Arizona Republic, after blasting his first home runs of the season, which made him 6-for-15 with five RBIs in the past four games.

Arizona rookie Alek Thomas, a Chicago native, went deep Friday and is batting .333 with three homers in 13 games since making his major league debut on May 8.

The Diamondbacks’ scheduled Saturday starter, Madison Bumgarner (2-2, 2.29 ERA), has thrown the ball relatively well this season despite yielding a season-high three runs and six hits over five innings of a 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday.

The 32-year-old left-hander posted a 1.17 ERA in five April starts but owns a 4.38 ERA in three this month.

Bumgarner has been consistently solid against the Cubs, going 9-3 with a 2.25 ERA in 15 career starts.

Jonathan Villar, who hit one of Chicago’s four homers on Friday, is 5-for-7 with two doubles and a home run in his career against Bumgarner.

Since making his major league debut on Tuesday, Chicago’s Christopher Morel has made an immediate impact, producing four hits in 11 at-bats, including with two home runs and three RBIs.

With two losses in a row, scheduled Chicago starter Justin Steele (1-4, 4.50 ERA) has not won since the second game of the season — six successive starts without a winning decision.

Still, the left-hander is coming off the best outing of his season. On Sunday, he allowed the Diamondbacks just two runs (one earned) on three hits with a career-best 10 strikeouts. He left after six innings with the score tied, and the Cubs went on to win 3-2.

It was a much-needed strong outing for Steele, who failed to pitch into the fifth inning in any of his previous four starts.

“What’s hurt him has not been stuff,” pitching coach Tommy Hottovy said. “It’s been long at-bats, long innings, and the next thing you know, you’re in the third or fourth and you have a high pitch count. So, being able to manage that has been one of our No. 1 goals.”

Snow in Denver has Mets, Rockies waiting

The New York Mets visiting the Colorado Rockies seems to prompt a not-so-great tradition — games postponed due to snow in Denver.

For the third time in 10 seasons, New York’s trip to Colorado has been hampered by wintry weather. Friday’s scheduled opener of a three-game series was postponed due to inclement weather, which turned into heavy snow.

The game is scheduled to be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Saturday. The first game is slated for a 1:10 p.m. MT first pitch. The second is ticketed for 6:40 p.m. MT, which could mean playing temperatures in the 30s.

After temperatures neared 90 degrees Thursday, a cold front moved into Colorado complete with rain and snow. The chilly forecast continues through Saturday with more precipitation likely and highs in the low 40s.

The other times the Mets have had games snowed out in Colorado came in 2013 (April 15 and April 17) and on April 16, 2021.

Assuming the weather cooperates, the Saturday opener will feature a battle of right-handers, New York’s Carlos Carrasco (3-1, 3.73 ERA) and Colorado’s German Marquez (1-3, 6.16).

The nightcap starters are slated to be Mets right-hander Trevor Williams (0-2, 4.20 ERA) and Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber (2-3, 4.38).

While Colorado’s rotation is fairly stable, the Mets are trying to fill holes after Max Scherzer was placed on the injured list on Thursday due to an oblique strain. He is expected to miss six to eight weeks and joins Jacob de Grom and Tylor Megill on the shelf.

Veteran Trevor Cahill could become an option in the future after New York signed him to a minor league deal on Friday.

The Mets are coming off a dramatic 7-6, 10-inning win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. Pete Alonso’s walk-off, two-run homer rallied New York and continued a run of success despite all the injuries.

“It just shows a lot about this team,” New York second baseman/left fielder Jeff McNeil said after his team’s third win in four games. “We’re coming here every single day, fighting, battling. No matter who’s on the field, we’re playing some good baseball.”

Colorado will have a rare two-day break thanks to a day off Thursday and Friday’s postponement. The Rockies, who have lost eight of 10 games, could get a boost if outfielder Kris Bryant returns from the IL on Saturday as expected.

Bryant has not played for Colorado since April 25 due to a back strain.

The Rockies got a solid start from Kyle Freeland in a 5-3 win over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, and they hope Marquez can follow suit. He has lost three successive starts before beating the Kansas City Royals on May 14, when he threw six innings of three-run ball.

Marquez was an All-Star last year, but his ERA this season is nearly two runs higher than his 4.36 career mark. The Rockies need him to pitch like an ace if they are to have any chance in the ultra-competitive National League West, and he thinks he is up to the task.

“I still have the stuff to win a Cy Young,” Marquez said this week. “I have been working so hard to get back and be one of the top pitchers. I still can be. It’s been a little bit frustrating, but I’m going to be great the rest of the year.”

Marquez is 3-1 with a 3.48 ERA in five career starts against the Mets.

Carrasco opened May with consecutive wins but was hit hard in a no-decision against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, when he yielded four runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. He will be facing the Rockies for the first time.

Williams, who has alternated between the bullpen and the rotation this season, made a scoreless four-inning start against the Cardinals on Tuesday. He has a 2-1 record with a 4.58 ERA in three career starts vs. Colorado.

Gomber has pitched at least 5 1/3 innings in each of his past five outings, including a six-inning, three-run performance against the Royals on Sunday. He beat the Mets the only time he faced them, giving up two runs in eight innings on May 24, 2021.

Breanna Stewart pours in 28 as Storm nip Sparks

Breanna Stewart scored 28 points as the host Seattle Storm held off the Los Angeles Sparks for an 83-80 win on Friday night.

Jewell Loyd added 11 points and Ezi Magbegor had nine points and 11 rebounds for the Storm (3-3).

Liz Cambage compiled 25 points and eight rebounds, Nneka Ogwumike added 20 points and Brittney Sykes contributed 10 for the Sparks (2-4).

Stewart scored the Storm’s first seven points of the third quarter and Sue Bird added a 3-pointer as the hosts grabbed a 61-45 lead.

Jordin Canada’s basket completed a 6-0 run that pulled Los Angeles within 63-56.

Magbegor’s two free throws gave Seattle a 67-58 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Sparks closed within 70-63 on a jumper by Sykes, but a three-point play by Epiphanny Prince pushed the lead to 10 points.

Los Angeles got within eight points four times before Cambage’s two free throws, Sykes’ steal and layup and Cambage’s put-back cut the deficit to 79-77 with 1:35 left.

After an exchange of baskets, Bird made two free throws to give the Storm a four-point lead with 45.5 seconds left.

Cambage sank one of two free throws to cut the deficit to three. The Sparks had a chance to tie, but Ogwumike’s 3-point attempt in the final second missed.

Seattle built an early 17-point lead before Olivia Nelson-Ododa’s basket and Cambage’s two free throws trimmed the gap to 29-16 at the end of the first quarter.

Los Angeles scored 11 straight points to get within 41-34.

Bird assisted on a Stewart basket, Stewart assisted on a Bird 3-pointer and Stewart added a three-point play to give the Storm a 49-34 lead with 2:29 remaining in the first half.

Ogwumike converted a three-point play with 38.3 seconds left to trim Seattle’s lead to 51-41 heading into halftime.

Ariel Atkins makes key plays as Mystics edge Dream

Ariel Atkins scored 18 points and Natasha Cloud added 16 to help the Washington Mystics record a 78-73 victory over the Atlanta Dream on Friday night at College Park, Ga.

Tianna Hawkins tallied 11 points and Shakira Austin added 10 points for the Mystics (5-1), who overcame a 10-point, third-quarter deficit.

Rhyne Howard scored 19 of her 21 in the first half for the Dream (4-2). Cheyenne Parker tallied 13 points, Nia Coffey contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds and Erica Wheeler had 11 points.

Washington played without two-time WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne (back).

Atkins made a short baseline jumper with one minute left to give the Mystics a 72-71 edge. Wheeler responded with a driving hoop to give Atlanta a one-point lead with 45.6 seconds to go.

Hawkins made two free throws to give Washington a 74-73 lead with 41.5 seconds remaining. Howard missed a jumper with 29.4 seconds left and Cloud made two free throws to make it a three-point game with 21.9 seconds left.

Atkins stole Atlanta’s ensuing in-bounds pass, was fouled and made two free throws with 19 seconds to make it a five-point lead as the Mystics closed it out.

Howard, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2022 draft, made 7 of 16 field-goal attempts. But she struggled against double teams in the second half and had just two points on 1-of-10 shooting.

The Dream shot 40.9 percent from the field and made 8 of 24 from 3-point range. Washington connected on 45.5 percent of its shots, including just 3 of 18 from behind the arc.

Howard’s steal and layup started a 10-0 burst in the third quarter as the Dream took a 56-46 lead with 5:47 left. Wheeler scored the final five points of the run.

Washington answered with an 8-2 run to trail 58-54 entering the final stanza.

The Mystics remained hot as Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored the first six points of the fourth quarter for a 60-58 edge.

The score was tied at 44 at halftime after Cloud hit a 3-pointer as time expired.

Howard was 6-of-6 shooting — including four 3-pointers — in the first half. She scored 15 of her points in the first quarter.

Jonquel Jones, Sun fight off Fever

Jonquel Jones scored 19 points to lead six players in double figures Friday night as the Connecticut Sun held off the Indiana Fever 94-85 in Uncasville, Conn.

DeWanna Bonner added 18, including a corner 3-pointer with 34.1 seconds left in the game that gave Connecticut (3-1) a 90-80 lead. Alyssa Thomas tallied 17 points, while Brionna Jones and DiJonai Carrington each came off the bench to net 11. Another reserve, Natisha Hiedeman, chipped in 10 points.

Kelsey Mitchell shot Indiana (2-5) into contention in the fourth quarter, scoring 19 of her game-high 23 points. Victoria Vivians added 15 points and Danielle Robinson hit for 10. But the Fever couldn’t pull off the upset despite canning 54 percent of their field goal attempts.

Indiana rookie NaLyssa Smith (ankle) missed her second straight game, which led to the Sun controlling the lane. Connecticut earned a 31-25 rebounding advantage, allowing just three offensive boards.

The Sun hit only 43.7 percent from the field, but were splendid from the 3-point arc, sinking 11 of 19 shots. They also connected on 21 of 29 free throws, while the Fever hit 11 of 13.

After coach Marianne Stanley called them out for a lackluster effort in a 101-79 home loss on Tuesday night against Atlanta, Indiana responded with a much better performance on both ends of the court against one of the WNBA’s best teams.

The Fever led most of the first quarter and took a 19-16 advantage to the second period when rookie Lexie Hull canned a 3-pointer in the final minute. But Connecticut fought back, using a 3-pointer by Jasmine Thomas as time expired to grab a 37-35 edge at halftime.

The Sun exploited their advantages in experience and size over the last 4 1/2 minutes of the third quarter. Following a Destanni Henderson layup that brought Indiana within 48-47, Connecticut went on a 15-4 run. Brionna Jones’ layup with 3.4 seconds remaining made it 63-51 going to the fourth period.

Oilers overtake Flames to level series at 1-1

Zach Hyman scored the game-winning goal with Edmonton short-handed midway through the third period, and the Oilers evened their Western Conference semifinal series with a 5-3 road victory over the Calgary Flames on Friday.

The best-of-seven Battle of Alberta is tied 1-1 going into Sunday’s Game 3 in Edmonton.

With the score tied 3-3, Hyman was sprung on a breakaway and lifted a glove-side shot with 9:46 remaining in regulation to collect his fifth goal of the playoffs.

Two minutes later, Leon Draisaitl added another breakaway tally, sprung by goaltender Mike Smith, his seventh marker of the playoffs to cap a three-point outing.

Duncan Keith added a goal and two assists while Connor McDavid had one goal and one assist for the Oilers, and Evan Bouchard also scored. Smith made 37 saves in a bounce-back performance from the opener, a 9-6 Calgary win.

Michael Stone, Brett Ritchie and Tyler Toffoli replied for the Flames. Johnny Gaudreau had two assists, and Jacob Markstrom stopped 35 shots.

The Flames blew a 3-1 lead and have now dropped 13 consecutive Game 2 clashes in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Reminiscent of the opener, the Flames burst out of the blocks again with a pair of early goals. Stone converted a point-shot blast at 3:02 of the first period for his second goal of the playoffs, and Ritchie doubled the lead with his second tally in as many games on a rebound at 6:02 mark.

Keith put the Oilers on the board at 13:38 of the opening period, coming in from the point to convert McDavid’s one-handed pass for his first goal of the playoffs. At 38 years, 308 days, Keith is the oldest player in Oilers history to score a postseason goal.

Toffoli’s power-play goal restored Calgary’s two-goal edge, a one-timer set up by Elias Lindholm’s cross-ice pass at 2:04 of the second period.

However, McDavid responded 61 seconds later to make it a 3-2 affair. Seconds after a tally was disallowed because McDavid made contact with the goalie, the Oilers captain was sprung alone in the slot and converted a deke from in tight for his sixth goal of the playoffs.

Then, while the Oilers were enjoying a four-minute power play, Bouchard’s point shot tied the affair at 15:03 of the second frame.
