ATP roundup: Top seed Cameron Norrie wins Lyon title

Top-seeded Cameron Norrie of Great Britain outlasted Slovakia’s Alex Molcan 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-1 to claim his second ATP Tour title of the season Saturday at the Lyon Open in France.

Norrie, who won Florida’s Delray Beach Open in February, failed to convert two match points on the unseeded Molcan’s serve in the second set. He broke Molcan’s serve three times in the deciding set to finish the match in two hours and 31 minutes.

This is the first career title on clay for the 24-year-old Norrie, who lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the finals of this tournament last year.

Molcan had been seeking his first title.

Gonet Geneva Open

No. 2 seed Casper Ruud of Norway survived a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (1) battle with Portugal’s Joao Sousa to repeat as the champion in Geneva, Switzerland.

Ruud dropped his first set of the week in a tightly contested match that lasted three hours and one minute. He is now 6-1 in his last six ATP 250 clay-court finals. He is the first back-to-back winner in Geneva since Stan Wawrinka in 2016-17.

Ruud struck 11 aces and saved seven of 10 break points against the unseeded Sousa, who fought off two match points to force the third-set tiebreak.

Tyler Reddick takes Xfinity win at Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas — After running among the leaders, Tyler Reddick took the point with a dramatic pass from third place with 31 laps remaining to take the checkered flag in Saturday afternoon’s NASCAR Xfinity Series SRS Distribution 250 at Texas Motor Speedway.

It was Reddick’s 10th career Xfinity Series victory, coming in only his second start of 2022, and his first trophy since his 2019 Xfinity Series championship year.

It marked the first ever win for the new Big Machine Racing team’s No. 48 Chevrolet, with Reddick taking the checkered flag a distant 1.825 seconds ahead of fellow NASCAR Cup Series regular William Byron in an action-packed afternoon.

There were 11 caution periods, the second-most in the series’ history at the 1.5-mile Texas high banks, and tight racing on the ensuing restarts with the two-time Xfinity Series champion Reddick pulling off that impressive pass and ultimately earning his team’s debut victory.

“First off, just a huge opportunity and thank you to Big Machine Racing, it [the car] was just so good,” the 26-year-old Californian said.

Reddick noted that he was motivated to take the drive this week to help the Richard Childress Racing-partnered team improve the Xfinity Series program overall.

“Chevrolet was just so good,” he added. “Nobody at RCR was really happy with where the cars were at, and I wanted to help and try to make these cars get better and to figure out what we needed to do to get these cars better.

“We figured it out pretty quick, I guess,” he said with a smile.

Reddick’s victory snapped a three-race winning streak by the JR Motorsports Chevrolets, which combined to lead 118 of the 167 laps on Saturday.

Byron, driving the No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, was making his first Xfinity Series start since claiming the 2017 series championship and came within two-seconds of earning JRM what would have been a historic fourth consecutive win by four different drivers.

The team had three cars finish in the top five and four finish inside the top 10, including Byron, Sam Mayer in third, Justin Allgaier in fourth and Josh Berry in seventh. Berry led a race best 46 laps, Allgaier was out front for 33 and Byron paced the field for seven laps.

Noah Gragson, who is ranked second in the series driver standings, ended up 36th in the 38-car field. First, he was collected in a chain reaction accident then second damaged the car beyond repair when a tire problem put the car in the wall only five laps afterward.

It was a rough ending to a great start on the weekend. The 23-year-old Las Vegas native earned his first career pole position, led 32 laps, and won Stage 1 – his series best sixth stage victory of the season – twice that of any driver.

“I guess the only positive is we got a Playoff point for the stage win,” Gragson said. “Definitely sucks. Good to see the other JRM cars running strong. … hopefully, we can get the company a good finish today.

“Just a bummer. We’ve been doing awesome, just disappointed. We were pretty quick and was just bidding our time.”

Ryan Truex finished sixth in the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, scoring his best finish in five Xfinity Series starts this season. Stewart-Haas Racing’s Riley Herbst was eighth – his sixth straight top-10 finish and ninth of the season.

Kaulig Racing’s Landon Cassill was 10th; his seventh top 10 of 2022.

All three of the championship leaders faced adversity on Saturday.

Current points leader A.J. Allmendinger – the only driver to finish inside the top-10 in every race this season – looked like that streak may have been stopped when his No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet had a tire rub racing Allgaier in the closing laps. He was able to maintain his top-10 season run, however, salvaging a ninth-place finish.

Ty Gibbs, who is third in the driver standings, was involved in the initial Gragson multi-car accident on Lap 89. He already had a challenging day, sent to start the race at the rear of the field for an inspection violation.

After the race – and despite the challenges they all three faced – Allmendinger will take a 44-point advantage over Gragson into next week’s race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the Alsco Uniforms 300 (1 p.m. ET on FS1, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). He holds a 52-point edge over Gibbs, who is the defending Charlotte race winner.

Tiger Woods shoots 79, might skip final round at PGA

0

Tiger Woods shot 1-under-par over the final five holes of the third round of the PGA Championship on Saturday to finish the day with a 79, keeping him from recording a score in the 80s for the third time in a major.

Still, it was his worst round ever at a PGA Championship.

It was a gritty effort at the end for Woods, who started the day at 3-over 143 and finished at 12 over and stood 21 strokes out of the lead when his third round ended.

And he might not return Sunday for the final round at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Clearly struggling to make it through 18 holes on his rebuilt right leg, Woods and his team declined an on-camera interview with CBS Sports following the round.

Instead, Woods and his reps told the CBS television crew that he was sore and didn’t have a “definitive plan” for Sunday. Instead, the 46-year-old planned to take Saturday night to rest and consider his next step.

On Friday, Woods made the cut at a major for the second time in two tries since nearly losing his right leg 15 months ago in a devastating single-car crash in Southern California. He shot a 1-under-par 69 on Friday to sneak in under the cut line.

In the third round, he started with a par but found the water on No. 2 for a bogey. His real troubles began on the par-3 No. 6, when his tee shot landed in the water again, his shot from the drop area found the rough to the left of the green, and he hit his pitch sort of the green. After hitting a chip shot to about two feet from the cup, he putted out for a triple-bogey 6.

From there, Woods’ round unraveled on a chilly morning. He bogeyed holes 7 and 9 to leave him with a 41 on the front nine.

The bogey on the par-4 No. 9 was the first of five straight bogeys for Woods, a four-time PGA Championship winner. He won at Southern Hills in 2007, the most recent time the tournament was played at the course.

Woods never before had carded five straight bogeys at a major championship.

The bright spot of Woods’ day came on the 413-yard, par-14 15th. Woods flashed his first smile of the day when he drained a 36-foot putt for his only birdie on the round.

Woods’ worst-ever round in a major championship came in 2002, when he shot an 81 in the third round at The Open Championship at Muirfield — the same year in which he won the Masters and the U.S. Open.

He shot an 80 in the first round of the U.S. Open in 2015 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.

FaZe Clan and Natus Vincere both earned sweeps in their Saturday semifinal matches to set up their clash in the grand final of the PGL Major Antwerp in Belgium.

FaZe swept Team Spirit while Na’Vi swept ENCE to advance to Sunday’s finale.

FaZe opened with a 16-13 win on Mirage before clinching in a marathon, 25-23 on Dust II. Spirit was one point from evejing the match at 15-13, but FaZe tallied consecutive points to force overtime.

Norway’s Havard “rain” Nygaard posted 65 kills and a plus-12 kills-to-deaths differential to lead FaZe. Leonid “chopper” Vishnyakov led the all-Russian Spirit crew with 58 kills.

Na’Vi defeated ENCE 16-7 on Nuke and 16-12 on Dust II to advance. Ukraine’s Aleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev led Na’Vi with 58 kills and a plus-27 K-D differential. Pavle “Maden” Boskovic of Montenegro had a team-high 35 kills for ENCE.

Thursday marked the opening of the Champions Stage, an eight-team single-elimination bracket played on the heels of the Challenger Stage (May 9-12) and Legends Stage (May 14-17). The Swiss System format was used to determine which eight teams would advance in each prior stage. All matches in the first two stages were best-of-one except elimination and advancement matches, which were best-of-three.

CF Montreal open home run with visit from RSL

0

CF Montreal will look to get back on track and extend their home winning streak to four games when they host Real Salt Lake on Sunday.

CF Montreal (6-4-2, 20 points) had their eight-game unbeaten streak snapped Wednesday with a 2-1 road loss at Nashville SC.

Now they will play their next four MLS games at home. A win would give them their first four-game home winning streak since a five-game stretch from June 2-July 7, 2018.

“We’re happy to have this stretch at home,” midfielder Samuel Piette said. “We know we’re strong at home, that we play well, that we have that confidence. Preparation is easier when you don’t have to travel or return in the wee hours of the morning.”

Montreal’s Kei Kamara scored his 133rd career MLS goal on Wednesday, moving him to within one of Jeff Cunningham for third-most in league history. He has three on the season, tied for second on the team behind Djordje Mihailovic, who leads with six.

Strong play at home has helped fuel Real Salt Lake (5-3-4, 19 points) thus far, with better play needed on the road. The club has just 12 goals overall, tied for lowest in the Western Conference.

RSL is 1-3-3 as the visitors and they have been shut out in five of seven road games while scoring four goals in the other two contests.

Three of those road goals came against New England on March 12. Their last road tally was off a penalty kick against Colorado on April 2.

“The last game and a half, our mobility in the attack and our structure in the attack has been much better and given us opportunities to score goals,” RSL coach Pablo Mastroeni said. “Then I think it’s really the decisions when we’re in the final third.

“What we’ve been working on is an understanding of cues to look for in the final third to create the best chance on goal possible.”

RSL forwards Tate Schmitt and Bobby Wood lead the club with two goals apiece but neither has scored since March 19.

Pablo Ruiz will return from suspension Sunday, while Scott Caldwell will serve a suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards.

Montreal is 4-0-0 against Real Salt Lake at home. It’s the first meeting between the two sides since May 29, 2019, a 2-1 Montreal victory.

Celtics’ Robert Williams III (knee) questionable for Game 3

Boston Celtics big man Robert Williams III is questionable with knee soreness for Saturday night’s Game 3 against the Miami Heat after being added to the injury report earlier Saturday.

Williams played in the first two games of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals after a four-game absence due to issues with his left knee.

He contributed 18 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots in 28 minutes in the Game 1 loss, but had just five points, four rebounds and three blocks in 20 minutes in the Game 2 victory.

Reserve Daniel Theis figures to see more playing time in Game 3, particularly if Williams can’t go.

Also, Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said point guard Kyle Lowry (left hamstring) and forward P.J. Tucker (left knee) will go through their pregame routines with the intent to play Saturday night in Boston.

Bryce Harper (elbow) back in Phillies’ lineup vs. Dodgers

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper will be in the starting lineup as the designated hitter for Saturday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers after missing five games due to a right elbow injury.

Harper, 29, has a small tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of his throwing elbow. The two-time National League MVP received a platelet-rich plasma injection last Sunday and said he feels ready to swing the bat.

“The last couple of days were tough for me,” Harper told reporters before Saturday’s game. “Woke up (Friday) feeling good and today feeling better, as well.”

Harper, who will bat third against Los Angeles, isn’t expected to play in the field for at another six to eight weeks. He currently is unable to throw.

The National League adopted the designated hitter prior to this season. That gives the reigning NL MVP a way to contribute while dealing with the injury.

Harper, 29, is batting .305 with nine homers, 14 doubles and 27 RBIs.

Harper has a .280 career average with 276 homers and 779 RBIs in 11 seasons with the Washington Nationals (2012-18) and Phillies. Harper was Rookie of the Year in 2012 and won his first NL MVP with the Nationals in 2015. He is the reigning MVP.

The Phillies went 1-4 in Harper’s absence, including a 4-1 loss on Friday in the first of three games versus Los Angeles.

Early Voting holds off Epicenter to win 147th Preakness Stakes

0

Early Voting went to the front at the head of the stretch and outlasted race favorite Epicenter by 1.5 lengths to capture the 147th Preakness Stakes on Saturday evening at venerable Pimlico Race Course in steamy Baltimore.

Early Voting, who went off as the 5-1 third choice in the race behind Epicenter and the filly Secret Oath, is trained by Chad Brown and owned by Seth Klarman.

Jose Ortiz rode the winner, which covered the 1 3/16-mile race in a time of 1:54.54 on a fast track. It’s the first Preakness win for Ortiz, who won the 2017 Eclipse Award for the nation’s top thoroughbred jockey.

The Preakness carries a total purse of $1.65 million, with the winner earning 60 percent ($990,000).

Early Voting ran in the pack though the first ¾ of the race behind a moderate pace as set by Armagnac. Early Voting took charge as the horses turned for home as Armagnac faded. Epicenter rallied from the back of the pack on the inside and Secret Oath wheeled to the outside to find room to chase Early Voting.

Early Voting tired in the deep stretch and moved toward the rail but was far clear of Epicenter to affect the latter’s run to the wire.

Epicenter held on for second, with longshot Creative Minster third and Secret Oath fourth.

Early Voting’s connections opted to skip the Kentucky Derby and point their horse to the Preakness. Klarman grew up just a few blocks from Pimlico, and it was his birthday, setting off a wild celebration.

Early Voting followed the pattern set by Brown and Klarman five years ago when Cloud Computing won the Preakness after not running in the Kentucky Derby. There has been plenty of debate about whether horses that don’t race in the Run for the Roses should be allowed to compete against those that want through that gauntlet.

Brown has won the Eclipse Award for training four times, most recently in 2019.

Kentucky Derby longshot winner Rich Strike did not run in the Preakness, the middle jewel of the Triple Crown for thoroughbred 3-year-old horses.

His connections opted to wait to bring him back to competition in the Belmont Stakes on June 11 in New York. Rich Strike’s absence assured that there would not be a Triple Crown for the 42nd time in the past 44 years.

Flames look to slow down Oilers’ Connor McDavid in Game 3

The Calgary Flames know the recipe they want to follow in their Western Conference second-round playoff series with the Edmonton Oilers.

When the Flames hit the road for Sunday’s Game 3 of the best-of-seven series that is tied 1-1, their plan is to skate in more five-on-five play instead of the special-teams battles seen in the first two games, especially in the Oilers’ 5-3 victory on Friday.

“A four-on-four goal, a five-on-four goal, a short-handed goal for them,” Calgary coach Darryl Sutter said. “If you’re not playing five-on-five, that’s definitely to their team’s advantage.”

The Flames have roared out of the gates in both games only to see multi-goal leads disappear in both outings. They blew a 6-2 lead in Game 1 before claiming a 9-6 victory, and then lost 2-0 and 3-1 leads en route to Friday’s loss.

Granted, Oilers superstar captain Connor McDavid has taken his game to a new stratosphere, but the Flames are hurting themselves with too many penalties and more.

The easy path is to blame goaltender Jacob Markstrom, who has posted a 4.24 goals-against average and .868 save percentage against the Oilers between regular-season and playoff games, but a 2.07 average and .927 save percentage against the rest of the league. Markstrom has not been at his best in the first two games, but his teammates have struggled, too.

“I think since I’ve been here, we’ve done a really good job of playing our type of hockey,” said trade-deadline acquisition Tyler Toffoli of the Flames. “The past two games, we haven’t been playing to our foundation and it’s been getting away from us and (we’re) giving up too many scoring chances.”

McDavid, especially, has been on the other side of those chances, and masterful at creating and converting them. With another goal and assist on Friday, he has collected six points in the series, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg of his achievements.

He became the fastest active player to reach 20 points in a single playoff year, reaching the mark in nine games — and the fastest since Mario Lemieux needed just eight games in 1992. McDavid, who has six goals and 14 assists, has posted five consecutive multi-point games and is only the second player in NHL history to record multi-point games in eight of nine outings to start the playoffs (the other being Darryl Sittler in 1977).

If that’s not enough, McDavid also leads the Oilers in hits this series with nine and is a key player when the game is on the line.

“What I saw was a leader, who when the game was on the line was prepared to be in a shooting lane,” Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said of McDavid’s game. “When the goalie’s pulled and we’re killing a penalty, he was out there for a reason and he put his body on his line so that we would win. That type of self-sacrifice is what it takes to win come this time of year.”

In turn, the Oilers are confident they can upset the Flames in the series, proven by how they’ve overcome early deficits.

“It’s an emotional roller coaster,” said forward Zach Hyman, who scored the game-winning goal in Game 2. “You’ve got to try to stay off of it as much as you can and stay even-keeled because it’s hockey, and some nights bounces are going to go your way and some nights they’re not. We’ve had kind of a roller-coaster season where our backs have been against the wall, and our ability to push back has been second to none on any team I’ve been on.”
