Epicenter in favorite’s role at Preakness Stakes

0

Epicenter was the 4-1 favorite for the Kentucky Derby and heading for the finish line before being overtaken down the stretch by 80-1 longshot Rich Strike.

But Rich Strike isn’t running in The Preakness Stakes and Epicenter once again tops the board at 6-5 for the second leg of the Triple Crown on Saturday at Pimlico in Baltimore.

Early Voting is next at 7-2 and Secret Oath is 9-2.

Epicenter will start in Post No. 8 in the nine-horse field and trainer Steve Asmussen is just fine opening in that position.

“I thought it was ideal,” Asmussen said. “It’s a nine-horse field, plenty of run-up to the first turn. Several fresh horses and us coming back in two weeks, I think it’s absolutely ideal. You could say we’re half as nervous as the draw for the Derby, when you go from 20 runners to nine.

“I think that makes it that much more beneficial to everybody as far as post-position draw goes.”

Early Voting will be in No. 5 while Secret Oath landed in No. 4.

Simplification, which finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby, is listed at 6-1 and drew post No. 1.

“I saw speed to the outside. It doesn’t change our strategy,” Simplification trainer Antonio Sano said. “At first, I thought no good, but Johnny V (jockey John Velazquez) is so smart. He will make the decision if he has to go outside.”

Rich Strike, which didn’t enter the Kentucky Derby field until one day before the race, isn’t the only notable absence.

Two other top-five Kentucky Derby finishers aren’t part of the Preakness field: third-place Zandon and fifth-place Mo Donegal.

And after Rich Strike’s historical long-shot victory, expect some bettors to throw some cash on 50-1 Fenwick, a horse that just entered the race on Monday.

2022 Preakness Odds (includes post position, horse, jockey, odds).
1. Simplification — John Velazquez — 6-1
2. Creative Minister — Brian Hernandez — 10-1
3. Fenwick — Florent Geroux — 50-1
4. Secret Oath — Luis Saez — 9-2
5. Early Voting — Jose Ortiz — 7-2
6. Happy Jack — Tyler Gaffalione — 30-1
7. Armagnac — Irad Ortiz, Jr. — 12-1
8. Epicenter — Joel Rosario — 6-5
9. Skippy Longstocking — Junior Alvarado — 20-1

Rocket Lab USA Shares Up 4% Following Q1 Earnings Announcement

0

Rocket Lab USA, Inc. (NASDAQ:RKLB) shares were trading around 4% higher Tuesday afternoon following Q1 earnings announcement, with EPS coming in at ($0.06), missing the consensus estimate of ($0.04). Revenue increased 124% year-over-year to $40.7 million, compared to the Street estimate of $27.48 million.
Analysts at Deutsche Bank view the quarterly results as somewhat messy due to weaker margins but believe Q2 will show meaningful improvement, still putting the company on track to be one of the few publicly listed New Space companies that could actually be profitable in a few years.
At the same time, its growth trajectory shows no signs of slowing down, with a backlog now at $551 million, compared to $241 million at the end of the previous quarter.
Moreover, with Russia’s Soyuz rockets no longer allowed to fly European missions, the launch market will grow increasingly tight through mid-decade and Neutron’s importance/ demand will become even greater, allowing for higher pricing/profitability.

White House calls out Bezos after Biden inflation comment by Amazon founder

0

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos commented on President Joe Biden’s recent comments on inflation, leading to an ongoing exchange of comments between the White House and the Amazon founder. Jeff Bezos is an extremely savvy businessman who has faced criticism from his workers, from Presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

He is known for his comments, his sharp business dealings, avoidance of paying corporate taxes through write offs, paying a local authority to dismantle an iconic bridge for his super yacht to pass through, sponsoring public figures for space jaunts, while employees get less benefits and are intimidated when trying to form unions. So, the White House hit back, this could be just another spat to be dealt with, in the Amazon founder’s life!

On Friday, President Joe Biden tweeted, “You want to bring down inflation? Let’s make sure the wealthiest corporations pay their fair share.”

Although the president didn’t mention any corporate by name, Bezos responded to the tweet saying that “mushing them [corporate taxes and inflation] together is just misdirection.”

Amazon had paid no federal income taxes in 2017 and 2018, according to articles in several news outlets.

On Sunday, Bezos tweeted again that the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, signed into law in March 2021, had contributed to inflation. The world’s second richest billionaire with a fortune of over $100 billion said that inflation harmed the poor the most.

White House spokesperson Andrew Bates responded to Bezos’ comments saying that it didn’t “require a huge leap” to figure why the world’s second wealthiest person was opposing President Biden’s proposal to increase taxes paid by corporations and ultra-wealthy individuals.

Bates also mentioned that it was not surprising that the tweet came “after the President met with labor organizers, including Amazon employees.

Jeff Bezos once again responded that the Biden administration was trying to “muddy the topic.”

Celebrity Kim Kardashian on Sports Illustrated cover divides social media

On Monday, Sports illustrated (SI) announced the names of four women who would grace the covers of the magazine and released photos. These women included Kim Kardashian 41, Maye Musk, 74, Ciara, 36 and Yumi Nu, 36. Many users blasted the magazine after it released a photo of Kim on the cover, wearing a nude bikini from her Skims collection. They called the magazine “hypocritical” and “pathetic.”

One user said it was embarrassing to see the cover photo after SI had been featuring regular day to day women who were incredible and added a “Yikes.”

Another user said “KimK” was the “exact opposite of a “naturally beautiful woman.” The celebrity star “encourages disorder eating and photoshop because she hates herself. Boo.”

Another user told young girls looking at the cover that they “do not need plastic surgery to be beautiful” and there were “plenty of inspiring women inside the magazine to look up to being themselves.”

Kim Kardashian recently went on a drastic diet to lose weight to fit into an iconic dress originally worn by Marilyn Monroe and now in a museum, at the Met Gala. She has spoken of photoshopping her children’s photos (but not her own). She has reportedly undergone plastic surgery and more.

In her write up in the SI Swimsuit issue, the celebrity star spoke of her childhood and tight-knit family. She also spoke of photoshopping pictures for a Christmas Card. She said, “I’m never doing this again. I’ll individually do a shot with each kid and have to photoshop it together. I say that every year and then every year I attempt it” and more about her life, now that she was a mother herself.

She also called Sports Illustrated iconic and said that “every girl has been obsessed with Sports Illustrated Swimsuit covers.”

The celebrity businesswoman and reality TV star was photographed by Greg Swales in the Dominican Republic. Despite having 311 million followers on Instagram, Kim Kardashian cover shoot faced criticism and Sports Illustrated was called out for using her on their cover.

Which celebrity rapper is back on Instagram? Yeah it’s Ye!

Recently, model Chaney Jones shared two separate pictures of her posing in a silver bikini and a bodysuit. The 24-year old celebrity is known for posting on Instagram but this post was unique as it finally got a comment from celebrity boyfriend Kanye West. The popular rapper has been silent on social media for almost two months, after he was banned from Instagram for his online posts that were crass, rude and included a racial slur. Kanye left a black heart emoji on Chaney Jones Instagram story.

Chaney Jones was happy to see the emoji comment from the 44-year old rapper. She also commented on his response with black heart emojis and the words “I love me some uuuu.”

Chaney and Kanye’s Instagram exchanges follow a recent trip to Japan. A source told Hollywood Life that the trip brought them closer and Ye thinks Chaney is “amazing.” A source also told the outlet that Japan is Ye’s go to place when he wants to “get away from it all.”

Kanye West is an extremely successful businessman in the billionaire club according to Forbes as well as a popular, award winning rapper. He had traveled to Japan for work but invited his new love interest to join him as he would have a lot of downtime and considered Chaney to be a “perfect travel companion.”

Although Kanye was silent on social media for the past two months, he created a ruckus with his earlier posts. He attacked ex wife Kim Kardashian, reality star of The Kardashians on Hulu, her boyfriend Pete Davidson an actor and long time cast member of Saturday Night Live and their friends with weird memes, posts and music videos with violent depictions. However, it was rumored that Kanye was suspended from Instagram for hurling a racial slur at Trevor Noah, the host of The Daily Show, rather than the other posts.

Celebrity rapper Kanye West has commented with a simple, yet meaningful emoji on Chaney’s Instagram story as he returns to social media. Fans are waiting for him to start posting more and it’s hoped that whenever he decides to resume activity on Instagram or other social media, he posts in such a manner so as to get positive and encouraging comments from all and not just from girlfriend Chaney Jones.

Carlos Correa close to return as Twins face Athletics

Shortstop Carlos Correa is close to returning to the Minnesota Twins, who will continue their three-game series against the host Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.

Correa has been out since May 6 due to a contusion in his right middle finger, but he participated in batting practice Monday and took some ground balls.

“The last thing to come to him is really just cutting it loose, letting it go, throwing-wise,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “But even that is in a pretty good spot right now. We could see him out here this series.”

Minnesota opened the series with a 3-1 win on Monday. Gary Sanchez homered, and four pitchers limited the Athletics to four hits.

Correa’s return could impact rookie shortstop Royce Lewis, who has been impressive in his first 10 major-league games. Lewis is 7-for-22 (.318 average) over his last six games but could be sent back to the minors when Correa returns.

The Twins have won their first four meetings this season against Oakland, which is mired in a lengthy offensive slump.

The Athletics have an American League-worst team batting average of .199 and have scored one or no runs in four of their last five games.

“It feels like a bit of a broken record when your pitchers go out there and dominate and we can’t muster up runs for a win,” second baseman Tony Kemp said. “It’s tough for an offense. We just have to continue to keep confident. It’s not easy, but you can’t let today’s game factor into tomorrow.”

Oakland could use a spark from infielder Sheldon Neuse, who is batting .228 this month after hitting .328 in April. Neuse has missed the past two games due to groin tightness but has been available off the bench.

While the Athletics have lost three straight and 17 of their last 24 games, reliever A.J. Puk has emerged as a high-leverage option for manager Mark Kotsay. The left-hander extended his scoreless streak to 13 1/3 innings on Monday and has not allowed a run in 11 of his 12 appearances.

Right-hander James Kaprielian (0-2, 4.97 ERA) is set to make his fourth start of the season for the Athletics. He received a no-decision after allowing two runs on three hits against the Detroit Tigers last Thursday.

Kaprielian, 28, began the season on the 10-day injured list with an inflamed right AC joint before joining the team on May 1.

After struggling in his season debut, the California native has yielded just three runs in 10 2/3 innings over his last two starts.

He made his first career appearance against Minnesota earlier this month on May 7, when he took the loss after allowing one run on three hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Minnesota is expected to start right-hander Dylan Bundy (3-2, 5.76), who will be activated off the COVID-19 injured list.

Bundy, 29, last pitched on May 4, giving up nine runs on 11 hits over 3 2/3 innings in a 9-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

Bundy did not have a minor-league rehab outing, so Baldelli said Bundy will be on a pitch count for his return.

Alex Cobb, Giants look to keep rolling over Rockies

Regardless of where they’ve played recently, the San Francisco Giants have gotten the better of the Colorado Rockies.

The Giants swept a three-game series against them in San Francisco last week and then beat them 7-6 Monday night in Denver on Mike Yastrzemski’s ninth-inning homer.

The Giants have won 11 straight from Colorado and will go for 12 in a row when the teams meet Tuesday night.

San Francisco will send veteran right-hander Alex Cobb (2-1, 3.98 ERA) to the hill against righty Chad Kuhl (3-1, 2.88) of the Rockies.

Kuhl will make his fifth career start against the Giants and the second in less than a week. He took his first loss in San Francisco’s 7-1 win on Wednesday. He is 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in his four career starts against the Giants.

The loss Monday night left the Rockies feeling frustrated against their NL West Division rivals, much like outfielder Randal Grichuk was feeling recently.

Grichuk, acquired from Toronto in March, had endured a slump that saw him go hitless in 18 straight at-bats before he delivered a two-run single against Kansas City on Sunday. Grichuk had worked in the cage and off the tee, but a change in equipment made a difference, too — vision correction.

Grichuk was fitted for prescription athletic glasses and has started using contact lenses, too, and he says he can tell a difference. He had two hits Monday and said it will just be a matter of which he uses, and it will depend on the circumstances.

“I’ll probably try to stick with the contacts; then if it’s a windy night I’ll switch to the glasses,” Grichuk said. “Over the long haul, it’s going to be better. I can see better. Depth perception-wise it was a little funky. But if the contacts can sit well, I know over the long haul it’s going to be good.”

Cobb has faced the Rockies twice in his career and is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA against them. One of those outings came at Coors Field, where he picked up a win in 6 2/3 innings of work.

Monday’s victory ended a two-game skid for the Giants. It also marked the season debut of Tommy La Stella, who had been on the injured list with an Achilles’ tendon injury that dated to the start of the offseason. He played nine rehab games before returning to the lineup against the Rockies.

He went 0-for-1, but it didn’t diminish the impact he has on the lineup.

“Tommy is one of the better plate appearances in baseball right now, simple as that,” San Francisco manager Gabe Kapler said. “He has great discipline, fouls off pitches, is extremely competitive in the batter’s box. He’s kind of the epitome of what we want our hitters to be — make a lot of contact, drive the baseball, occasionally draw a walk here and there, and keep the line moving.”

La Stella was eased back into action, serving as the designated hitter on Monday night. He grounded out to the pitcher in his only at-bat and was lifted for a pinch hitter in the fifth.
