T1, Valorant head coach David Denis part ways

0

T1 released Valorant head coach David Denis in the aftermath of a dismal showing in the Valorant Champions Tour 2022: North American Stage 2 Challengers open qualifier.

Denis previously worked with teams in League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive since 2016.

The Canadian has a background in performance coaching. He is a registered psychotherapist who combined that experience with his passion for gaming. Denis teaches athletes how to improve their focus and ultimately their performance in competition.

In a statement posted to Twitter, T1 lauded Denis for his work on the mental health side of the game.

“Today, we bid farewell to @DavidDenisnd as Head Coach for #T1VALORANT,” the team wrote. “Thank you for your contribution to this journey with us and recognizing the importance of mental health in esports.”

He had been with T1 since 2021.

In February, T1 suspended Denis for the North American VCT open qualifier after Riot Games found evidence that T1’s coaching staff communicated with players mid-match against TSM in the tournament — a violation of the rules.

With a home-ice edge, Hurricanes face Bruins in Game 7

Win or go home.

The season will be on the line for both sides when the Carolina Hurricanes host the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference first-round series on Saturday in Raleigh, N.C.

The Bruins forced the deciding contest with a 5-2 win in Game 6 on Thursday in Boston.

“This is what you play for,” Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. “Guys should be excited. Game 7, Stanley Cup playoffs, home or road. I’d rather be at home, but we play where we play. I’d play on Mars if we had to.”

For Cassidy’s crew to knock out the Hurricanes, they’ll have to do something they have yet to accomplish thus far in the postseason — be victorious in Raleigh.

“We’ve got to win now one road game,” Cassidy said. “That’s what’s in front of us. We knew that when we started this series. We’d have to win a road game, at least one, if we wanted to advance. So here it is.”

Depth proved to be a strength for the Bruins in Game 6, with four of the five goals coming from someone other than their usual go-to scorers, Brad Marchand and captain Patrice Bergeron.

“You always want to help out and produce, but you just want to play the right way,” said Charlie Coyle, who had a goal and an assist and sits tied for second on the team in postseason scoring. “That’s all it is, no matter who you’re playing with.

“We got a lot of contributions from different guys (Thursday). … We’re just glad we got the job done.”

Carolina hopes the trend of home-ice advantage, which has factored into each side skating away victorious in their own rinks, continues for Saturday’s tilt.

“Everybody is obviously excited about it. It’s do or die,” goalie Antti Raanta said. “With how the series has been, home teams have been successful. We’re hoping that we can keep that going and get the energy from the crowd.”

Stronger play on special teams at home has been key for the Hurricanes. After going 0-for-3 on the power play in the series opener, Carolina went 4-for-14 (28.6 percent) in Games 2 and 5. At the other end, the Hurricanes’ penalty killers have held the Bruins to one goal on 11 opportunities through three games in Raleigh.

“You need everyone playing detailed hockey and limiting your mistakes as best you can,” captain Jordan Staal said. “And obviously just trusting in our game. Those are all the things we faltered at (Thursday). We have to come out in Game 7 with an effort that we obviously need to beat this team.”

The Hurricanes are looking for more from their top-end talent, who have struggled to produce as the series has progressed. Andrei Svechnikov scored both goals on Thursday, his first tallies since Game 1.

Sebastian Aho had two assists in Game 5 but hasn’t scored since striking twice in Game 2.

“We say it all the time, but we’ve got to get everyone going,” coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “Let’s just be blunt. If you play poorly here, then you’re going to be in trouble. It was nice to see (Svechnikov) get a couple, but we need everybody to be ready to roll next game.”

Reports: Cowboys sign first-rounder Tyler Smith to $13.38M deal

First-round draft pick Tyler Smith signed a four-year $13.38 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys, multiple outlets reported Friday.

The deal for the offensive lineman is fully guaranteed and contains a fifth-year team option, per the reports.

Smith took part in the team’s minicamp on Friday and played at left guard.

The Cowboys took Smith with the No. 24 overall pick in last month’s NFL draft. And while some observers thought that slot was too high for the Tulsa product, Dallas executive vice president Stephen Jones disagreed.

“I just think his upside is tremendous,” Jones said on the PFT PM Podcast after the draft. “He played at a smaller school there at Tulsa. He only played in 18 games at Tulsa. But we just feel like his skill set really lends to him having an opportunity to be a top, top left tackle at some point.”

Report: Sixers F Danny Green has torn ACL

Philadelphia 76ers forward Danny Green sustained a torn left ACL during Thursday’s season-ending loss to the Miami Heat, The Athletic reported Friday.

Green, who turns 35 next month, had to be carried to the locker room after a first-quarter collision with teammate Joel Embiid.

Green finished with three points and one steal in three minutes. Philadelphia lost the game, 99-90, and the series, 4-2, as top-seeded Miami advanced to the Eastern Conference finals.

Green averaged 5.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 21.8 minutes in 62 games (28 starts) in 2021-22, his second season in Philadelphia and 13th season in the NBA.

The three-time NBA champion has career averages of 8.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 819 games (709 starts) for the Cleveland Cavaliers (2009-10), San Antonio Spurs (2010-18), Toronto Raptors (2018-19), Los Angeles Lakers (2019-20) and the 76ers. He is a 39.9-percent shooter from 3-point range for his career.

Green signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Sixers in May 2021. The second season of that contract in 2022-23 is non-guaranteed.

FC Cincinnati rolling with scuffling Fire up next

0

FC Cincinnati is now alive, well and amid the most successful stretch of its four-year MLS tenure.

Meanwhile, a promising start to the season for the Chicago Fire has turned sour.

Looking to extend its franchise-record winning streak to four games, visiting FC Cincinnati can also hand the Fire a fourth consecutive defeat on Saturday night.

After being outscored 8-4 during an 0-3-1 rut, Cincinnati (5-5-1, 16 points) now owns a 5-1 scoring edge, and recorded back-to-back shutouts, during the club’s first-ever three-game MLS winning streak.

Although FC Cincinnati fell 5-1 to the New England Revolution in U.S. Open Cup play this week, they return to league action confident to continue their historic run.

“We have a few more answers (than earlier in the season), when we were, in a lot of ways, still figuring out who we were,” Cincinnati coach Pat Noonan said. “I expect that we will use (the U.S. Open Cup loss) as a learning tool, but also as motivation to right the wrong quickly.”

Brandon Vazquez and Luciano Acosta have combined for 10 of FCC’s 14 goals this season. Meanwhile, Cincinnati’s 21-year-old rookie goalkeeper, Roman Celentano, has started three straight MLS matches and made 11 saves, while blanking Toronto FC and Minnesota United FC.

Last in the Eastern Conference, the Fire (2-4-4, 10 points) have totaled seven goals all season and are mired in an 0-4-2 rut following consecutive wins over D.C. United and Sporting Kansas City in March.

Chicago conceded two goals through its first seven games, but been outscored 9-2 during its three-game losing streak.

The Fire trailed 3-1 after 36 minutes during last weekend’s 4-1 loss at Atlanta United.

“Everybody wants to be here and everybody believes in what the coaches are implementing within the group,” Chicago forward Victor Bezerra said.

“If there’s negative losses, it only causes us to train harder and try to correct what we’re doing on the field.”

In his first season with the Fire, Xherdan Shaqiri is tied for the team lead with two goals, matching Kacper Przybylko.

The Fire and FC Cincinnati are an even 2-2-2 against each other in six all-time contests.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby ruled out for Game 6

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will not play in Friday’s Game 6 against the visiting New York Rangers, coach Mike Sullivan confirmed.

Crosby, who absorbed a high, hard hit from Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba in Game 5 on Wednesday, did not participate in Pittsburgh’s morning skate Friday. Crosby did skate with skills coach Ty Hennes.

Sullivan also ruled out goaltender Tristan Jarry and defenseman Brian Dumoulin, while forward Rickard Rakell is a game-time decision.

The Penguins have a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. Game 7, if necessary, would be on Sunday in New York.

Crosby, 34, did not return to the game after the second-period hit from Trouba, who was not penalized on the play or disciplined by the league. The Rangers stayed alive in the series with a 5-3 home victory.

Crosby has two goals and seven assists in the series. In the regular season, the three-time Stanley Cup champion had 31 goals and 53 assists in 69 games.

Jarry has not played since breaking a bone in his foot on April 14. He resumed on-ice workouts last weekend.

Dumoulin (undisclosed) and Rakell (head) have not played since Game 1, a 4-3 victory by the Penguins in triple-overtime on May 3.

Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy released from jail

Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy was released on a personal recognizance bond Friday after an appearance in Arapahoe County (Colo.) Court.

He was arrested Thursday and charged with second-degree criminal tampering with a domestic violence enhancer, a misdemeanor. He was held overnight in the county jail.

Jeudy didn’t enter a plea during his court appearance, during which he wore an orange jail jumpsuit and was shackled, 9News in Denver reported. He is due back in court on May 31.

While a mandatory protection order remains in place, Judge Chantel Contiguglia dropped the no-contact portion of the order, saying “there was not probable cause to believe that there was the threat or use of any physical force against the victim,” ESPN reported.

9News reported Thursday night that Jeudy admitted to taking a wallet and baby formula belonging to the mother of his child after she took one of his phones. He locked the items in his car, according to the report

The television station said the woman told the judge she called 911 only to have police “monitor” the situation and not to have him arrested. She said she does not feel threatened by Jeudy.

Jeudy, 23, has played two seasons with the Broncos since they selected him in the first round (15th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Alabama. He played in 10 games (five starts) last season while dealing with a high ankle sprain and a stint on the COVID-19 list.

Warriors hefty favorites to polish off Grizzlies in Game 6

The Memphis Grizzlies may have the momentum, but the Golden State Warriors have history on their side when the Western Conference semifinals continue Friday night with Game 6 in San Francisco.

Facing elimination in the best-of-seven Wednesday and lining up without leading scorer Ja Morant, the Grizzlies dominated Golden State on both ends of the court in a historically lopsided 134-95 home win in Game 5.

A second straight Grizzlies win would send the series back to Memphis for Game 7, an advantage the second-seeded club earned by finishing three games ahead of the third-seeded Warriors in the regular season.

But Golden State’s 117-116 win at Memphis in Game 1 flipped the home-court edge in the series to the Warriors, giving the recent three-time NBA champions the inside track to earning a berth in the Western Finals for the sixth time in eight seasons.

“We’ve shown we’re a resilient team this year,” Golden State star Stephen Curry insisted after the Game 5 blowout, the largest in the postseason for the club since 2014. “We have the right mindset, the right approach, and all the tools we need to show who we really are in Game 6.”

The Grizzlies have been well-backed as 8.5-point underdogs at BetMGM, where they have drawn 71 percent of the spread bets and 74 percent of the handle. The 8.0-point line at DraftKings has drawn split action, with the Warriors backed by 52 percent of the bets while the Grizzlies have been supported by a whopping 89 percent of the handle.

The Warriors are expected to still be without coach Steve Kerr, who tested positive for COVID-19 before Game 4. Longtime assistant coach Mike Brown directed the Warriors in in Game 4 and Game 5. Brown has been named as head coach of the Sacramento Kings, effective after the season.

At home, the Warriors have been unbeatable during the playoffs. They won three home games in a row by an average of 13.3 points over the Denver Nuggets in Round 1 and crushed the Grizzlies 142-112 in San Francisco in Game 3 of this series as the visitors watched Morant go down with a knee injury.

But Memphis, as it has done all season, has responded well to seeing its star in street clothes on the sidelines. The Grizzlies were without Morant for 25 games in the regular season, winning 20 of them. And in Game 4 they led for almost 46 of the 48 minutes despite shooting poorly (41.7 percent overall, 25.7 percent on 3-pointers) but the Warriors escaped with a 101-98 decision.

Then in Game 5, the Grizzlies’ shots fell at a rate of 47.5 percent, including 43.9 percent on 3-point shots, and they buried the Warriors early. Memphis led by 10 after the first, 27 after the second, and 52 points after the third quarter. The lead topped out at 55.

The Warriors had averaged 119 points in their first eight playoff games, but they have averaged just 98 over the last two.

Since their championship run began in 2015, the Warriors have won six of eight Game 6s, including a 108-95 win at Memphis that ended their second-round series seven years ago.

That’s ancient history to the Grizzlies, who began the season as the third-youngest team in the NBA. Morant and many of their other players were still in high school in 2015.

One of those guys, 22-year-old Jaren Jackson Jr., is the key to the Grizzlies’ chances in Game 6, teammate Dillon Brooks insists.

“They got no one to guard him, no one to stop him,” Brooks claimed. “I try to tell him to stay aggressive, and you’re a walking mismatch out there for every single player that guards you. So just keep attacking.”

Jackson has topped 20 points three times in the series, including a pair of 21-point efforts since Morant left the lineup.

The Warriors hope to counter with defensive ace Draymond Green, a fellow Michigan State alum, albeit a decade earlier.

“It doesn’t feel good losing by as much as we did,” Warriors veteran Klay Thompson admitted after Wednesday’s loss. “But it’s just a loss. You flush it and you remind yourself who you are.

“We’re going to play with a 100-percent effort (in Game 6). I like our chances.”

The 218.5-point Over/Under at DraftKings falls smack in the middle of where the market opened at BetMGM (219.5) and where it stood as of Friday afternoon (217.5). The Over has drawn 72 percent of the bets and 57 percent of the spread at DraftKings while the Under has been backed by 53 and 68 percent of the action, respectively at BetMGM.

Union, Red Bulls square off in East showdown

0

The Philadelphia Union will look to extend their unbeaten streak to four when they host the rival New York Red Bulls on Saturday in Chester, Pa.

The Union (5-1-4, 19 points) have recorded three consecutive draws against CF Montreal, Nashville SC and Los Angeles FC. Philadelphia tied LAFC 2-2 in an electric, up-tempo game last Saturday.

After a major test on the road, the Union will now attempt to halt the Red Bulls’ stunning stretch of five straight road wins to open a season. No team in league history has ever won six in a row on the road to start a season.

“While it is early still, it’s still a game that has a lot of meaning for both clubs,” Union head coach Jim Curtin said. “It’s a big test for us and one that we look forward to. And it will be good to get back in our home stadium. We need our fans at their absolute maximum helping cheer us on.”

The Union and Red Bulls lead the Eastern Conference with only eight goals allowed apiece.

Realizing that five of the last six meetings between these two teams have been decided by one goal or less, defense will be vital.

“There is still beauty in defending,” Curtin said.

The Red Bulls will look to push their unbeaten stretch to five straight when they visit the Union. They are 2-0-2 during the stretch.

New York (5-2-3, 18 points) played to a 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers last Saturday.

While the Red Bulls are currently surging, they understand the difficult task of traveling to face the Union. And they’re embracing the challenge.

“We’ve been to places where we’re not the underdog, but we still feel that way,” Red Bulls defender Dru Yearwood said. “And it’s going into someone else’s house and taking three points. I guess we just enjoy doing it and we love it. I think just for us, we play with a bit more freedom. We just don’t have our backs against the wall and we play the way we want to play.”

The Red Bulls will now play in an early season game that could prove to be a measuring stick.

“I think in many directions they have a team with experience, a team with a clear identity and a clear plan,” Red Bulls head coach Gerhard Struber said of the Union. “And the mix of aggression and intensity makes it for every team in the league very difficult to play against. … We are very excited to go into this game and we know the level Philly is playing at.”

Midfielder Daniel Gazdag leads the Union with five goals.
