Leylah Fernandez rallies to win opener in Rome

Canada’s Leylah Fernandez recovered from losing seven straight games Monday to win 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 over No. 14 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome.

The 19-year-old Fernandez won the opening game and dropped the next seven before rallying to win 12 of the last 15 games, putting away her Russian opponent in one hour and 54 minutes.

“She’s an incredible player and she’s very comfortable on clay. I knew it was going to be tough,” Fernandez said. “The first set, I made a few mistakes and she just took advantage of it. In the second set, I just wanted to play a little more freely, just letting go of my arms.”

Fernandez took advantage of five double faults by Pavlyuchenkova and converted five of her 10 break chances.

“Even though I lost the first game (of the second set), I think it helped me to get into the match,” Fernandez said. “Afterwards, my balls were just going in. I’m just glad that I was able to keep attacking, keep being on the offensive, even though I was making mistakes, and I still kept trusting myself.”

Pavlyuchenkova, a 2021 French Open finalist, was playing just her second match since the Australian Open as she comes back from a knee injury.

Fernandez’s second-round opponent will be another Russian, Daria Kasatkina. Kasatkina moved on with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek.

Three seeded players were victorious Monday. No. 12 Belinda Bencic of Switzerland defeated Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-4, 6-2. No. 15 Coco Gauff was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Angelique Kerber of Germany. No. 16 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus won 6-3, 6-0 against Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland.

Bencic trailed 4-3 in the first set before turning things around on the tough Italian clay.

“For me, it’s tough conditions in Rome. There is a lot of clay on the courts,” Bencic said. “I have to find my way into the matches and I feel like I can’t play my usual game here. I have to take a Plan B, or a Plan C even, so I’m happy I found a way today.”

Other winners included Romania’s Simona Halep, Croatia’s Petra Martic, China’s Shuai Zhang, Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva, Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina and Australia’s Ana Tomljanovic.

76ers surge into G5 vs. Heat behind resurgent James Harden

Lost in the mania about Joel Embiid’s dramatic, successful return in consecutive wins over the Miami Heat is that the Philadelphia 76ers have a former Most Valuable Player who played like it Sunday night.

After going scoreless and picking up two first quarter fouls, James Harden reminded everyone why he’s just four years removed from an MVP. He finished with 31 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter, of a 116-108 victory in Game 4. He added nine assists and seven rebounds.

Harden, Embiid and Philadelphia try to take a 3-2 lead on Tuesday night in Miami when the Eastern Conference semifinal series resumes.

Prior to Sunday night, Harden hadn’t scored more than 22 points in any of the 76ers’ nine playoff games. It certainly didn’t look like he would go off when he joined teammate Tobias Harris in early foul trouble. But Harden delivered the kind of performance over the final three quarters one would expect from a former MVP.

His fourth quarter explosion included his trademark stepback 3-pointer from the top of the key that gave Philadelphia an insurmountable 114-103 lead with 1:07 remaining.

“We’re getting more confident as the series goes on,” Harden said. “Those first two games (were) a blur. But obviously, having Joel and having our full team, we kind of know what to expect. We know where to execute on both sides of the ball.

“It just makes the job a lot easier. Think about: We’re still a fairly new team. We’re damn near two months. So, when we finally catch a rhythm and finally find something that works, Joel goes off for a couple of games. So, we’re finally settling into the series.”

Not only Harden, but this year’s MVP finalist and league scoring champion, too.

Embiid contributed 24 points and 11 rebounds in his second game back from a fractured orbital bone and concussion. All five starters finished in double figures as the 76ers drained 16 of 33 3-pointers.

Meanwhile, the Heat are looking for the scoring balance that marked their two double-figure home wins in Miami. Jimmy Butler tried his best to carry the team with 33 and 40 points in the losses in Philadelphia but got precious little help.

Bam Adebayo was a non-entity in Game 3, although he did chip in 21 points on Sunday night. Tyler Herro helped some off the bench but wasn’t efficient. And Kyle Lowry (hamstring) had trouble again in Game 4, prompting coach Erik Spoelstra to say that he was unsure if Lowry would be available in Game 5.

There’s also the matter of Miami going cold from distance. In light of the 76ers’ work from 3-point range Sunday night, the Heat’s 7 of 35 marksmanship from the arc looks even worse.

“I thought we had some really good looks. We just missed them,” Spoelstra said.

Miami has something else to worry about. Reserve center Dewayne Dedmon sat out Game 4 with an illness and his status for Game 5 isn’t known. Dedmon’s presence would at least give the team six more fouls to use against Embiid.

Islanders fire Barry Trotz after four seasons

The Islanders fired coach Barry Trotz on Monday, ending his run of four seasons behind the bench in New York.

Trotz posted a record of 152-102 and was 28-21 in the playoffs with the Islanders.

The Islanders went to the conference finals in back-to-back seasons before missing the postseason in 2021-22.

Due to stadium construction, the Islanders began the season with 13 consecutive road games. Upon their return, a COVID outbreak decimated the lineup. The Islanders finished fifth in the Metro Division.

“It would be a tremendous understatement to say this was not an easy decision,” general manager Lou Lamoriello said Monday. “Unfortunately it is my role to make the best decisions for the organization.”

Lamoriello declined to expand on why he made the move, but confirmed he did not consult with players or anyone in the organization before making the call.

“This group of players needs a new voice,” he said.

Lamoriello, 79, has not been shy about making drastic changes in his career. However, Trotz was not thought to be in danger of losing his job. He had one year remaining on his contract.

The 59-year-old Trotz has 914 career victories in 23 seasons with Nashville (1998-2014), Washington (2014-18) and the Islanders.

Naomi Osaka out of Italian Open with Achilles injury

Naomi Osaka is out of the Italian Open to rest a sore left Achilles.

Osaka was injured at the Madrid Open during a first-round victory and said Monday morning she hasn’t healed.

Osaka lost her second-round match in Madrid to Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo, who was slated to be Osaka’s first-round opponent in Rome.

Nuria Parrizas Diaz of Spain replaces Osaka in the Italian Open.

Osaka said she is focused on being ready for the French Open, which begins May 15.

Reports: Nikola Jokic repeats as NBA MVP

Nikola Jokic is set to be named MVP of the NBA for the second consecutive season.

According to multiple reports, the Denver Nuggets’ four-time All-Star edged finalists Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers and Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks for the award and will be officially recognized later this week.

Jokic won the 2021 NBA MVP and is the second consecutive player to go back-to-back, following Antetokounmpo (2018-19, 2019-20).

Jokic improved statistically while playing largely without the supporting cast the Nuggets counted on in Jamal Murray (ACL recovery) and Michael Porter Jr. (back).

He led the NBA with 19 triple-doubles, averaged 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game in 2021-22 and guided the Nuggets to the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference. The Nuggets were eliminated from the playoffs in five games by the Golden State Warriors in the opening round.

Jokic became the NBA’s first player with 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists in a season.

Embiid garnered serious support from players who have been vocal on social media using the exhibit of the 76ers without the All-Star center as compared to with him.

Embiid led the NBA in scoring at 30.6 points per game and averaged 11.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 2021-22. That included a 41-point, 20-rebound game to wrap the regular season against the Indiana Pacers.

Antetokounmpo was third to Embiid in scoring at 29.9 points and seventh in the NBA in rebounding with an 11.6 per-game average. He also averaged 5.8 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.1 steals per game.

Atlanta United’s Miles Robinson to undergo Achilles surgery

0

Atlanta United confirmed that captain Miles Robinson suffered a ruptured left Achilles tendon during Saturday’s 4-1 win vs. Chicago Fire FC.

He was scheduled to undergo surgery later Monday.

The team didn’t announce a timetable for his recovery, but a torn Achilles likely would mean the end of Robinson’s MLS season and jeopardize his availability for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which starts on Nov. 21. He is a defender on the U.S. men’s national team.

Robinson went down with a non-contact injury in the 14th minute of Saturday’s game. He left the field on a stretcher.

Robinson, 25, has started 85 of his 96 appearances on Atlanta’s back line since 2018.

Atlanta (4-4-2, 14 points) will meet Nashville SC on Wednesday in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32. Its next MLS game is Saturday in Atlanta against the New England Revolution.

Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods entered in PGA Championship

0

Defending champion Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are among the 156 players entered in the field for the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

The tournament begins May 19.

For Mickelson, it would mark his first appearance on tour since the Farmers Insurance Open in January, where he missed the cut.

Earlier this year, Mickelson came under fire for remarks he made about the so-called Super Golf League, now the LIV Golf Invitational Series, backed by Saudi financiers. He told author Alan Shipnuck that the Saudis were “scary (expletives) to get involved with” with a “horrible record on human rights,” but he intended to work with them anyway in an attempt to gain leverage with the PGA Tour on financial matters.

After issuing a mea culpa in February, losing multiple sponsors and saying he needed “time away” from the sport, Mickelson, 51, went silent and did not play in the Masters.

Woods, however, did play in the Masters — his first tournament in more than a year after sustaining a devastating leg injury in a car accident in February 2021. He finished in 47th place, 13 over par for the tournament.

There’s no guarantee, despite his entry, that Mickelson will play in the PGA Championship. He can pull out up until the last minute, if he chooses to.

Seth Waugh, CEO of the PGA of America, said on the “5 Clubs Conversations” podcast that he has talked to Mickelson.

“I think he’s trying to figure out when the right time is for him,” Waugh said. “I think the game is trying to figure out the right time for him, too. How long is enough? And is he ready mentally and physically to do it?”

Mickelson would have to face the media for the first time in months, and Waugh said the goal would be to do that as soon as possible to remove the distraction from the tournament.

“What we’re trying to do is deliver a major championship, not a circus. And so I would hope that he can avoid that, and everybody can avoid that. And we’re taking golf shots instead of verbal gaffes once we get going,” Waugh said.

“But there’s certainly, I think, part of his thinking is, ‘Am I ready to face that glare and have that conversation and have all the answers that everybody is going to be looking for? And if I do it that week, am I then able to compete on a major championship venue under that kind of pressure with everything going on?’ But we would do everything we can to make it happen either before our week or very early in the week.”

The PGA Championship field includes 17 PGA champions, 34 major champions, three World Golf Hall of Fame Members and four Ryder Cup Captains. It also features the top 70 players in the PGA Championship points standings through the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship, which concluded Sunday.

As expected, the tournament has attracted a who’s who of today’s prominent players, starting with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who won the Masters last month.

Former champions Rory McIlroy (2012, ’14), Justin Thomas (2017), Brooks Koepka (2018, ’19) and Collin Morikawa (2020), all ranked in the top 20, also will play.

The PGA announced 155 of the entrants on Monday. The final spot is reserved for the winner of the AT&T Byron Nelson (if not already qualified). That tournament begins Thursday.

Stan Wawrinka wins in Rome for first victory in 15 months

Former world No. 3 Stan Wawrinka, on the comeback trail after battling a foot injury for more than a year, defeated 14th-seeded Reilly Opelka 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the opening round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome on Monday.

The victory gave the Swiss native his first ATP Tour victory since February 2021. It was just the second match in the return to play for Wawrinka, who was delighted by the outcome.

“I was feeling good on the court. Physically I was feeling great,” Wawrinka said. “When you don’t win a match in more than a year, you start to think about it more than what you should and not focus on the right things.

“In general I think it was a great match, great battle. I stayed positive. I start to feel much better with my tennis by the end of the second set, and the third set. I’m really happy with this victory.”

Wawrinka, 37, fought back from a set down and a 2-4 deficit in the second set, breaking the big-serving Opelka in the eighth game of the match to tie the score at 4-4. He fended off five break points three games later to go up 6-5, then broke Opelka’s serve again to win the set.

Next up for Wawrinka will be Laslo Djere of Serbia, who beat Croatia’s Borna Coric 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-2.

The 13th seed, Denis Shapovalov of Canada, also needed three sets to defeat Italian Lorenzo Sonego — and the home crowd.

As Shapovalov argued with the chair umpire in the second set and was assessed a code violation for stepping beyond the net, the crowd began to boo him. Frustrated, he turned to the crowd and yelled, “shut the (expletive) up.”

He went on to lose the set but prevailed 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3 to win the three hour, 11-minute match. Shapovalov apologized to chair umpire Richard Haigh after the match.

“A lot of things happened in the heat of the moment. I need to be better with my behavior,” said Shapovalov, who will face Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second round on Tuesday. “It was my mistake. I’ll know the rule for next time. I definitely won’t step over the net.”

Basilashvili defeated Daniel Evans of Great Britain 7-6 (2), 6-2.

Another Italian, Fabio Fognini, advanced to the second round after defeating Austrian Dominic Thiem on center court, 6-4, 7-6 (5). It was Fognini’s first win in Rome since 2019.

Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina topped Ilya Ivashka of Belarus 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in two hours and 42 minutes. Davidovich Fokina moved to 8-3 on clay courts this year and next will face Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, the eighth seed.

In other action, Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain, the 15th seed, ousted Federico Delbonis of Argentina 6-3, 6-2; Jenson Brooksby beat Italian wild card Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4; another American, Marcos Giron, came back to defeat Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 3-6, 6-4, 6-3; and Tommy Paul eliminated Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain 6-4, 6-4.

Also, Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands beat Sebastian Korda 6-4, 6-1; Russian Karen Khachanov topped Italian Giulio Zeppieri 6-3, 6-4; and Alex De Minaur of Australia defeated Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 6-4, 6-1.

NFL plans two MNF games Week 2

Tandem “Monday Night Football” games are scheduled for Week 2 of the 2022 NFL season.

The league is taking the long road to announce select games this season before releasing the full 2022 regular season schedule Thursday night.

Unlike the recent trend of back-to-back Monday games for Week 1, the NFL will overlap its primetime Monday offerings Week 2 this season.

The first game on Sept. 19 is the Tennessee Titans visiting the Buffalo Bills at 7:15 p.m. ET, an ESPN broadcast of a rematch of a 34-31 shootout in Week 6 last season.

In the second game, the Philadelphia Eagles host the Minnesota Vikings, an 8:30 p.m. ET kickoff airing on ABC.

Max Homa rises to career-high No. 29 in world

0

Max Homa’s surreal life journey continues to hit new plateaus.

The 31-year-old woke up on Monday as the 29th-ranked player in the Official World Golf Ranking. That is a new career-best for the California native following his two-shot victory at the Wells Fargo Championship on Sunday.

Homa’s previous career high-water mark had been No. 31 following his victory at the Fortinet Championship to kick off the PGA Tour’s “fall swing” earlier this season. After winning twice in 2021, Homa is now the fifth two-time winner on tour this season after claiming his fourth career PGA Tour title.

Sunday’s win vaulted Homa up eight spots in the world rankings.

“Sometimes my life feels too good to be true and this is one of those cases,” he said on Sunday. “It’s crazy, it feels really good.

“Obviously, seen some low spots on this tour and for the last three years now kind of finding my stride and racking up four wins is crazy. Career’s kind of settling down and I’m settling into myself as a golfer.”

Homa overtook Keegan Bradley with a 2-under-par 68 in the final round. Bradley, who settled for a tie for second, did rise 20 spots to No. 44. That gets him inside the top 50, the benchmark for qualifying for all the major worldwide events.

Bradley tied with Matthew Fitzpatrick, who rose seven spots to No. 18, and Cameron Young, who climbed three places to No. 38 with his third runner-up finish of his rookie season.

Rory McIlroy claimed solo fifth with a pair of 68s over the weekend. However, he was unable to successfully defend a PGA Tour title for the first time in his career and remained No. 7 in the world.

With McIlroy the lone top-10 player in action last week, the only movement was Cameron Smith sliding past Patrick Cantlay for No. 4 and Sam Burns entering the top 10. Dustin Johnson fell to No. 11 for the second time this year.
