Celtics must contain Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo in Game 4

Giannis Antetokounmpo will look to lead Milwaukee to a 3-1 series advantage when the Bucks host the Boston Celtics on Monday night in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The two-time MVP led Milwaukee to a 103-101 win in Game 3 on Saturday, pouring in 42 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. It was the sixth time he has scored at least 40 points in a playoff game.

“I just try to do whatever is in front of me. Play to my strengths as much as possible, and I know what my strengths are,” Antetokounmpo said. “As long as I play within my strengths, I’m going to be in a good place and I just try to take it a possession at a time.”

Jrue Holiday contributed 25 points and seven rebounds, and Brook Lopez went for 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Although Khris Middleton is still out with an MCL sprain, George Hill has returned to the Bucks’ rotation after dealing with an abdomen injury. Hill was quiet in his postseason debut in Game 3, as he was held scoreless in 11 minutes off the bench.

With Hill back in action, Milwaukee is hoping for more production from a bench that has averaged 22.0 points per game in this series.

Monday’s game on the defending NBA champions’ home floor is now essentially a must-win for the Celtics, who will host Game 5 on Wednesday night.

While no loss is easy to swallow, especially in the playoffs, Boston mounted a late-game surge that could give it some momentum heading into Game 4.

After trailing by 13 with 9:48 left to play in the fourth quarter, the Celtics stormed all the way back and eventually went ahead 100-99 after a pair of free throws from Jaylen Brown.

Following buckets from Antetokounmpo and Holiday that put the Bucks up by three, Boston’s Marcus Smart sank the first of two free throws before intentionally missing the second. Robert Williams and Al Horford each missed putback layups.

“Didn’t even have to come down to that last play honestly. We were sloppy in the third and execution-wise at times,” Celtics coach Ime Udoka said. “Battled back well in the fourth, but can play a whole lot better.”

The Celtics were outscored 34-17 in the third quarter.

Brown paced Boston with 27 points and 12 rebounds on 8-of-16 shooting. Al Horford supplied 22 points and 16 rebounds, and Derrick White posted 14 points off the bench.

Jayson Tatum struggled heavily on the afternoon and was held to just 10 points on a lackluster 4-of-19 shooting which included an 0-for-6 effort from 3-point range.

Smart is back with the Celtics after missing Game 2 with a thigh contusion, but Sam Hauser will be out on Monday with a right shoulder issue.

With Saturday’s loss, Boston is still searching for its first win in Milwaukee this season after it dropped both regular-season contests on the Bucks’ home floor.

ATP roundup: Carlos Alcaraz cruises to Madrid title

Completing a dream week in his home country, Carlos Alcaraz cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory against World No. 3 Alexander Zverev to win the Mutua Madrid Open on Sunday in the Spanish capital.

It is the second ATP Masters 1000 title and ATP Tour-leading fourth title overall this season for the 19-year-old, who improved to 28-3 on the season.

His convincing 62-minute victory against Zverev came on the heels of consecutive victories against countryman Rafael Nadal and World No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia. He was the first player ever to defeat Nadal and Djokovic on clay in the same event.

“It feels great to be able to beat these players,” Alcaraz said in his on-court interview. “To beat two of the best players in history and then Zverev, the World No. 3. He is a great player. I would say this is the best week of my life.

“I am 19 years old, which I think is the key to be able to play long and tough matches in a row. I am feeling great physically.”

Alcaraz now has seven consecutive victories against opponents ranked in the Top 10.

Including his win at Miami in March, he is the second-youngest player to win two Masters 1000 crowns. Nadal was 18 when he won the Rome and Monte Carlo titles in 2005.

Nadal has inspired him.

“Watching Rafa lift this trophy gave me a lot of power to work hard for this moment,” Alcaraz said. “It is a great moment for me. It is the first tournament I watched, so lifting the trophy today is so emotional.”

Alcaraz, the seventh seed, never faced a break point while overpowering Zverev. He broke the second-seeded German’s serve four times, including three straight to finish out the match. Zverev fought off three match points in the final game before double-faulting to end the match.

Zverev, 25, fell short in his bid for a third title in Madrid (2018, 2021).

“I want to congratulate Carlitos. Right now you are the best player in the world,” Zverev said during the trophy ceremony. “It is great for tennis that we have such a new superstar that is going to win so many Grand Slams, that is going to be World No. 1 and I think is going to win this tournament many more times.”

Twelve months ago, Alcaraz was ranked No. 120. On Monday, he will climb to a career-high ranking of No. 6.

Russia’s Aslan Karatsev rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7) win over South Africa’s Lloyd George Harris, setting up a second-round clash in Rome with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

Karatsev trailed 5-2 in the deciding set and had to fight off a match point in the tiebreak to advance in two hours and 37 minutes.

There were three other first-round matches in the ATP Masters 1000 event. Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic edged Francis Tiafoe 7-6 (7), 7-6 (4). Chile’s Cristian Garin defeated Italy’s Francesco Passaro 6-3, 6-2. Marin Cilic of Croatia beat Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi 6-1, 6-4.

Joey Logano makes late moves to win at Darlington

Joey Logano ran down William Byron and bumped him out of the way as they approached the white flag to win the Goodyear 400 NASCAR Cup Series race Sunday on Throwback Weekend at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, S.C.

On the race’s final restart, Byron stuck low on Logano off Turn 2, with Logano’s Ford scrubbing the wall and turning the lead over to Byron.

However, Logano’s No. 22 Ford caught Byron with two laps to go and shoved Byron’s Chevrolet in Turn 3, loosening him up and sending up the track, which allowed Logano to speed past the No. 24 car.

Logano went on to record his first win of 2022 over Tyler Reddick. Justin Haley, Kevin Harvick and Chase Elliott rounded out the top five in a race that featured nine cautions. Byron wound up in 13th.

Harvick set a Darlington record with his 13th consecutive top-10 finish, breaking a tie with Bill Elliott.

By running the fastest qualifying lap Saturday, Logano secured his 23rd career pole, which was also his first of the season and first at NASCAR’s oldest superspeedway.

He opened the 293-lap race around the 1.366-mile, egg-shaped track by watching Kyle Larson immediately take the lead and seeing the first caution fly after Brad Keselowski spun on Lap 2.

Larson paced the 90-lap first stage, but he slid off Turn 4 while trying to pass underneath Kyle Busch to bring out the third caution period on Lap 54. Larson later retired from the race with a last-place finish in 36th.

Logano found his way back to the front and held off Ross Chastain for his first stage win this season and first at the South Carolina track.

Martin Truex Jr. passed Logano for the lead and led most of the second stage, but Chastain took the lead on Lap 166 when Keselowski wrecked with Kyle Busch, forcing the latter driver’s No. 18 Toyota out of the race.

Chastain’s No. 1 Chevrolet held the point for a Stage 2 win, and he led Truex, Logano, Denny Hamlin and Byron to start the final 99-lap run to the checkers.

But Chastain’s day ended as he wrecked on the restart, and Hamlin positioned his No. 11 Toyota up front — only to be passed by Logano on the next restart.

With 33 laps to go, an eight-car melee occurred when Truex slid back on the restart and started a wreck off Turn 2 from sixth on back.

Max Homa staves off Keegan Bradley to win Wells Fargo

Max Homa shot a 2-under-par 68 in the final round of the Wells Fargo Championship to outduel Keegan Bradley and win his fourth career PGA Tour title Sunday at Potomac, Md.

Homa started the day two shots off the pace of Bradley, the 54-hole leader at 8 under. Playing in the final pairing of the afternoon, they traded the lead back and forth before Homa drew away to finalize an 8-under 272.

Bradley posted a 2-over 72 to drop into a tie for second at 6 under with Cameron Young and England’s Matt Fitzpatrick.

After Homa earned his maiden PGA Tour title at the 2019 Wells Fargo, at its usual home of Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C., he doubled up at the temporary site of TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.

“This week felt very one shot at a time. With the weather, how difficult the golf course was, it just felt like, ‘Just play golf,'” Homa said. “You’re going to make bogeys, you’re going to make doubles, you’re going to mess up. This week more so than others, where it’s maybe been a little cleaner on Sunday, this one was just hit it, find it, hit it again.”

Homa took control early when he birdied the opening hole and Bradley ran into disaster with a double-bogey at the par-5 second. But after another bogey at No. 4, Bradley charged back to 8 under with birdie 3s at Nos. 5, 7 and 8, a stroke better than Homa at the time.

But Bradley struggled at the par-4 11th, when he missed right of the fairway off the tee and landed his second shot in a creek. It turned into his second double-bogey of the round.

“It was weird,” said Bradley, the 2011 PGA Championship winner. “I didn’t play my best golf today. It was choppy and then I had a couple good stretches but I had a chance there at the end, so I’m proud of that aspect of it. But I’m pretty bummed, I felt pretty good about this one.”

The mishap gave Homa a three-stroke cushion, but Homa’s bogey 5 at No. 13 and Bradley’s birdie at the following hole narrowed that margin to one. Bradley couldn’t capitalize, barely missing a long par putt at No. 15 before Homa rolled in a 13-foot birdie putt.

Bradley made one final push by hitting his second shot at the par-4 16th inside 9 feet and making birdie. Homa made a 5-foot bogey save to drop back to 8 under, but he saved par on the last two holes while Bradley could not pull out one more birdie.

“Keegan is a really good golfer,” said Homa. “He hits it so well and he holed some really good putts. I’m just trying to play my game and kind of see what happened. He made an unbelievable birdie on 16 while I was trying not to make double.”

Young’s 4-under 66 featured six birdies and two bogeys and was only outdone by 48-year-old Stewart Cink’s 65 for the round of the day. Fitzpatrick posted a bogey-free 67.

Rory McIlroy, the four-time major winner and 2021 Wells Fargo champion from Northern Ireland, placed fifth at 4 under after a final-round 68.

“Some of those pin positions on the back nine were tricky and tough to get close to,” McIlroy said. “Yeah, I mean, overall it’s been a good weekend, a decent week, something to build on going into the PGA (Championship).”

Gilles Simon to retire from tennis at year’s end

Gilles Simon, who reached No. 6 in the world tennis rankings, is retiring at the end of the season.

“It was a magical, wonderful and extraordinary adventure,” Simon posted to social media on Saturday. “It will stop at the end of the year. A huge THANK YOU to everyone who made it possible. There is no sadness, no regret. Just the will to put everything I have left. On every game, until the end.”

Simon, 37, debuted on the ATP Tour in October 2004 and won 14 titles. He has 498 tour wins and, with two more, would become the 11th active player to reach 500, according to the ATP Tour.

He currently is ranked No. 158 and has played a limited schedule this year with a 1-3 record. He reached No. 6 in January 2009.

Another veteran French player, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, announced last month that he will retire after this year’s French Open.

Max Verstappen claims inaugural Miami Grand Prix title

Sunday’s inaugural Miami Grand Prix Formula One race in Miami Gardens, Fla., lived up to its billing as a heavyweight battle between the series’ two points leaders — Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and Max Verstappen of Red Bull.

Verstappen came away with the victory, the second in a row and third of the year for the 2021 F1 drivers’ champion. His earlier wins had come in Saudi Arabia and Italy.

Leclerc, who led the championship by 27 points at the start of Sunday, had won in the season-opener in Bahrain and Race 3 in Australia. He finished second on Sunday, 3.7 seconds behind Verstappen.

Carlos Sainz finished third in his Ferrari while Sergio Perez was fourth for Red Bull.

Fifth was George Russell in a Mercedes. He was followed by teammate and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton.

“It was an incredible grand prix,” Verstappen said. “Very physical as well. I think we kept it exciting until the end. It was an incredible Sunday for us.”

Verstappen had started the race alongside teammate Perez in the second row, behind the Ferraris of pole-sitter Leclerc and Sainz.

But the Dutch-Belgian Red Bull driver passed Sainz just after the standing start. He then tracked down Leclerc, caught him on Lap 8 and passed the Monaco driver on the first turn of Lap 9.

Verstappen worked his way out to a 4.6-second lead over Leclerc when the Ferrari driver pitted on Lap 25. The stop was a slow one. Verstappen pitted a lap later and responded with a quick stop. With stops completed, Verstappen’s lead had jumped to over 7 seconds.

On Lap 41 of 57, Pierre Gasly in an AlphaTauri and Lando Norris in his McLaren made contact to bring out a safety car. The crash sent some teams scrambling to pit and move to different tire compounds.

Verstappen, Leclerc, Sainz and Perez stayed out, but suddenly tightly packed at the front of the field in that order when the safety car retired on Lap 47 of 57.

Leclerc kept the pressure on Verstappen over the next seven laps until Verstappen pulled away over the final three laps.

“Towards the end I thought I could get Max at one point,” Leclerc said, “but today they had the advantage in terms of pace.”

The race was conducted on a purpose-built, 19-turn, 3.36-mile street circuit around the Hard Rock Stadium where the NFL’s Miami Dolphins play. The circuit did not get much love from drivers before the race because the surface proved extremely slippery on the portions that were not rubbered up, making for one-groove racing. The racing turned out to be better than predicted.

The two Aston Martin cars of Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel started the race from the pits. It was discovered that their fuel was too cold and they opted to start from the pits to avoid a penalty. They had qualified 10th and 13th, respectively, and started last and second to last.

The only American-based team, Haas F1 Racing, had a so-so day. Mick Schumacher appeared to be on the verge of collecting his first points but while running ninth, he made contact with Vettel and slipped to a 15th-place finish. Kevin Magnussen finished 16th for Haas.

Google’s cloud group has formed a team who will build services that will facilitate developers to build Web3 applications. Blockchain technology is in its early development stage and Google is planning to offer back-end services as it seeks to expand its market share.

In an interview with CNBC, Amit Zavery, who is a vice president at Google Cloud, said that they would not be a direct part of the cryptocurrency wave. Instead, they would provide technologies that companies could use, to take advantage of Web3’s distributed nature in their “current businesses or enterprises.”

Google is increasing its commitment to blockchain technology by building an in-house team. The outlet said that the tech giant was expected to build a system which could be used by companies to make blockchain data easy and people could explore this technology.

The system could also simplify the method by which blockchain nodes are built and run. These nodes are essential to validate and record transactions using blockchain technology. The vice president also said that the tools developed by Google would be compatible with different computing environments including rival Amazon Web Services.

Although cryptocurrency including Bitcoin is no longer considered by many as an investment due to risks involved, the technology behind it is increasing its footprint in mainstream. Many industries including finance and retail have been exploring Web3 and are informing analysts and investors of the same.

Recently CEOs from both Nike and Warner Music confirmed their interest in Web3 as the future and mentioned that they would be building products and experiences in Web3. Google Cloud Service’s Web3 team is looking to tap into the requirements of non tech companies by offering technical services related to blockchain technology.

Jill Biden, the First Lady of the United States of America visited Ukraine on Sunday. The surprise visit on Mother’s Day was to show solidarity with the people including the women in Ukraine who are suffering as a result of Russia’s war with the country. President Zelensky’s wife appreciated the visit by Dr. Biden. This is a rare occurrence that a sitting president of the nation’s wife has visited a war zone. Laura Bush, a former first lady, had also visited active war zones in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Jill Biden crossed the border from Slovakia. She had met with refugees at a processing center at the Vysne Nemecke border. After reaching Ukraine, she met the first lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska. She had not been seen in public since her country was invaded on February 24.

Before the start of a closed-door meeting between the two first ladies, Biden said that she had wanted to visit Ukraine on Mother’s Day. She said that she believed that it was important to show the people of Ukraine that “this war has to stop and this war has been brutal.” She also said that the people of the United States stood with the people of Ukraine.

First lady Olena Zelenska praised first lady Jill Biden “for a very courageous act.” Speaking through an interpreter she said that they understood what it took “for the US first lady” to come to Ukraine, when it was a war zone as military actions and air sirens were “happening every day, even today.”

Earlier, other high profile visitors from the U.S. included House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who led a congressional delegation to meet Zelensky in Kyiv, late April. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin also visited Ukraine, two weeks before Jill Biden.

First lady Jill Biden handed over flowers to first lady Olena Zelenska. Both of them spent time with a group of children at School 6. They made tissue paper craft items that would be used as Mother’s Day gifts. First lady Jill Biden spoke to President Joe Biden after her visit.

President Justin Trudeau of Canada also visited Ukraine on Sunday to reaffirm his country’s support for the people of Ukraine and met president Zelensky. On Sunday, Irish band U2 also performed at a Kyiv subway station that is serving as a bomb shelter. Lead singer Bono praised the Ukrainians for fighting for their freedom and offered a prayer of peace.
