Former Baylor starting QB Gerry Bohanon transfers to USF

Ex-Baylor quarterback Gerry Bohanon announced Sunday that he will transfer to South Florida for his senior season.

Bohanon will compete with current starter Timmy McClain for the Bulls’ starting QB job.

Bohanon completed 62.9 percent of his passes for 2,200 yards and 18 touchdowns with seven interceptions last season for Baylor (12-2). He also ran for 323 yards and nine TDs on 76 carries in his lone season as a starter. The 12 wins for Baylor are a team single-season high.

Bohanon, however, entered the transfer portal this spring after losing his starting job to sophomore Blake Shapen.

McClain completed 55.3 percent of his passes for 1,888 yards and five touchdowns for South Florida (2-10) last year. He threw seven interceptions.

Back-to-back wins give Subliners Pro-Am Classic title

The New York Subliners won consecutive matches by identical 3-1 scores to capture the Call of Duty League Pro-Am Classic on Sunday.

The Subliners rallied to defeat the Los Angeles Thieves in the final after knocking off the Toronto Ultra in the second semifinal earlier Sunday. The Thieves advanced to the title match by turning back OpTic Texas, also by a 3-1 score, in the first semifinal.

New York took home $100,000, while the Thieves settled for $50,000. All matches were best-of-five.

In the final, the Thieves won big on the first map, Berlin Hardpoint, 250-85. But the Subliners bounced back with a 6-3 win on Tuscan Search and Destroy, edged the Thieves 3-2 on Gavutu Control and clinched the match 250-237 on Tuscan Hardpoint.

In their semifinal, the Subliners opened with a 250-206 win on Bocage Hardpoint. The Ultra tied the match with an easy 6-1 win on Desert Siege Search and Destroy, but New York responded with narrow wins on Tuscan Control (3-2) and Tuscan Hardpoint (250-241).

The Thieves’ semifinal followed the same pattern. They won on Berlin Hardpoint 250-178, but saw OpTic tie the match with a 6-1 win on Bocage Search and Destroy. Los Angeles then wrapped up the match with victories on Gavutu Control (3-2) and Tuscan Hardpoint (250-228).

The tournament featured all 12 Call of Duty League teams plus the top four finishers from last month’s Minnesota Open that served as a qualifying event.

For round-robin play in the opening phase, teams were divided into four groups that each featured three CDL clubs and one qualifier. The top two teams in each group advanced to the quarterfinals.

Steve Flesch nabs elusive title at Mitsubishi Electric Classic

Steve Flesch shot a 7-under-par 65 to edge out three other golfers for the Mitsubishi Electric Classic title Sunday at Duluth, Ga.

Flesch started the day four shots behind 36-hole leader David Toms, but his final round helped him card an 11-under 205 for the tournament, one shot better than Toms, Fred Couples and Ireland’s Padraig Harrington.

Flesch’s only prior win on the 50-and-older circuit came at this same event at TPC Sugarloaf in 2018.

“Really wasn’t playing that great this year, not off to a good start, but I just hung in there today because I did everything I could to try and make it as hard as possible the first two days for myself,” Flesch said. “Proud of the way I hung in there. Got a lot of encouraging support, friends and family at home, so today was a lot of redemption for a lot of people.”

Harrington, a PGA Tour Champions rookie, went low with an 8-under 64 to move into contention. After Flesch managed five birdies in a row at Nos. 2-6, Harrington matched that feat at Nos. 10-14.

Toms ceded a two-stroke lead when he missed back-to-back short putts at Nos. 13 and 14, opening the door for his competitors.

Harrington made his ninth and final birdie of the day at the par-4 17th to reach 10 under for the event. Flesch birdied the same hole to touch 11 under and saved par on the last. Toms couldn’t manage a birdie at the par-5 18th that would have forced a playoff. He signed for a 2-under 70.

“I laid up,” Toms said of the last hole. “I didn’t hit a very good wedge shot obviously. The last time I had that yardage today I hit it (to) about a foot on No. 10, so I felt like it was an easy shot and just didn’t hit a very good one.”

Couples fired a bogey-free 66 to join the tie for second. South Africa’s Ernie Els shot a 67 to take solo fifth place at 9 under. Mark Walker (68) was alone in sixth at 68.

Emmanuel Macron inaugurated as France’s President for 2nd term, calls it ‘new’ term

0

Emmanuel Macron the current president of France recently won a second term, last month. This is quite a rare occurrence in the nation. On Saturday, he was sworn in at a ceremony that took place at Elysee Palace. There were about 500 guests including former presidents François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy. Four former prime ministers, religious leaders, state figures and others were present at the swearing-in ceremony. Macron, in French style?, winked at his wife, Brigitte Macron, after arriving at the reception hall of Elysee.

In a short but decisive speech Macron said that action would be taken to make France “a more independent nation” where its people would have better lives. He said that they would build French and European responses to the challenges of the century.

He spoke of a “fair method” to govern the country. He said that the government would work with unions, associations and other people in France who belonged to the “political, economic, social and cultural worlds.”

He also said that his one compass was serving the country, fellow citizens, children and youth. He said that he pledged to “hand down a more liveable planet and a more living and stronger France.”

After his speech, he went to the Elysee Palace gardens and heard the firing of 21 cannon shots from the Invalides plaza. This is an traditional event that marks the inauguration of a president in France. He also inspected the troops who ware present at the ceremony including part of the crew who are essential for the nation’s nuclear preparedness.

Macron second term starts on May 14. He might face a bigger challenge, in June when legislative elections will take place. A united political left has emerged that is hoping to prevent him from getting a majority in Parliament. The coalition consists of parties such as La France Insoumise, the Parti Socialiste, the Greens and the Communist Party. There are 577 seats at the National Assembly.

How has Macron’s French diplomacy helped avert World War 3 after Russia and Ukrainian visit?

Mariners end six-game slide with 10-inning win over Rays

Ty France’s walk-off single to left in the 10th inning delivered Seattle a 2-1 win over the visiting Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday afternoon, breaking the Mariners’ six-game losing streak.

After Abraham Toro’s one-out home run in the ninth off closer Andrew Kittredge tied the series’ fourth matchup, France ripped a 1-1 slider from Matt Wisler (1-1) deep to left with one out to send home Jarred Kelenic with the game-winning tally.

Toro went 2-for-4 as Seattle claimed the final game in the series and improved to 2-0 in extra innings.

In his major league debut, Seattle starter George Kirby displayed the talent and command that made him one of the organization’s top prospects and the best pitcher in its minor league system.

Striking out seven and getting 15 swings-and-misses, the right-hander fired six scoreless frames and allowed four hits. A control specialist, Kirby didn’t issue a walk in his 81-pitch debut.

Paul Sewald (1-1) pitched a scoreless 10th as five Seattle pitchers fanned 14 Tampa Bay hitters.

Manuel Margot was 2-for-3 with a solo homer and stolen base for the Rays, who won three of four in the series but lost for the first time in four extra-inning games.

Tampa Bay had its six-game winning streak snapped in the defeat and lost for just the fifth time in the past 18 games.

In his second start, Ryan Yarbrough matched Kirby through five scoreless innings. The left-hander yielded four hits and one walk while striking out four over 68 pitches.

Kirby opened his major league career by fanning left-handed hitter Brandon Lowe — who slugged two homers Saturday night. After yielding a base hit, he finished the frame by whiffing Randy Arozarena and Ji-Man Choi.

While Kirby was overpowering the Rays with seven strikeouts over the first five innings, Yarbrough retired seven straight batters at one point, getting six flyouts. Margot made a terrific sliding grab near the right-field foul line to deny Adam Frazier an extra-base hit to end the fifth.

After homering in the late innings on Friday and Saturday, Margot belted a 1-1 slider from Erik Swanson as the first batter the right-hander faced in the top of the eighth. The long shot was Margot’s third this season.

Jorge Alfaro clubs walk-off homer as Padres stun Marlins

Pinch hitter Jorge Alfaro hit a two-out, three-run home run in the ninth inning Sunday afternoon to give the San Diego Padres a 3-2 walk-off victory over the Miami Marlins.

Miami pitchers had shut out the Padres for 20 straight innings and had retired 11 straight batters when the Padres launched a game-winning rally against closer Cole Sulser. Jurickson Profar singled with one out in the ninth, which was only the Padres’ sixth hit of the game.

Then followed an unusual play. Left-handed hitter Trent Grisham grounded sharply to third baseman Joey Wendle, who was playing on the right side of the infield in the shift. But Wendle’s throw to second in an attempt to get a forceout was wide of the bag. With no one covering third in the shift, Profar headed to third, only to be tagged out by Sulser on a throw from Rojas.

Rookie C.J. Abrams then singled to left, bringing up Alfaro, the last player on the Padres’ bench, as a pinch-hitter. He hit the first pitch from Sulser into the left field seats for his second homer of the season.

Right-hander Robert Suarez (2-1) pitched two perfect innings in relief of Joe Musgrove, who allowed two runs on five hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in seven innings.

Sulser (0-1) took the loss after Marlins left-handed starter Trevor Rogers and three relievers extended the Padres’ scoreless innings streak to 20.

The Marlins scored their first run in the fourth. Jesus Aguilar doubled to lead off the inning when Padres center fielder Grisham failed on a diving catch in left center. After Musgrove struck out Jorge Soler, Wendle singled to right and Garrett Cooper hit a sacrifice fly to break the scoreless tie.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. made it 2-0 with his fifth homer of the season in the sixth inning — a drive into the Padres’ bullpen in left center.

Rogers pitched his way out of two-on jams in the first, third and fifth innings. He got out of all three by inducing two-out, infield pop outs.

Diamondbacks stay hot with shutout of Rockies

Zac Gallen pitched seven shutout innings, lowering his ERA to 0.95 in five starts this season, to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 4-0 on Sunday in Phoenix.

Gallen (2-0) allowed five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. He retired the last eight batters he faced and did not allow a runner past second base after the first inning.

Relievers Noe Ramirez and Joe Mantiply did not allow a hit or walk in the last two innings. Ramirez struck out the first batter in the ninth, and Mantiply struck out the last two batters.

Arizona, victorious in nine of its past 12 games, won two of three against the Rockies behind starting pitchers Merrill Kelly, Zach Davies and Gallen. They combined to allow only one earned run in 22 innings, with 15 hits allowed, four walks and 21 strikeouts.

Gallen has issued only four walks in 28 1/3 innings this season while posting 26 strikeouts.

The Diamondbacks’ No. 1 prospect, center fielder Alek Thomas, made his major-league debut and got his first career hit in the fifth inning. He doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by fellow rookie Jose Herrera, a catcher.

After designated hitter Cooper Hummel — another rookie — reached on a walk, Colorado starter German Marquez (0-3) tried to pick Hummel off at first base but committed a throwing error.

Thomas ran home to put Arizona ahead 4-0.

Colorado had its lone scoring threat against Gallen in the first inning after Yonathan Daza singled and Charlie Blackmon doubled with one out. They were left stranded after Gallen struck out C.J. Cron and got Ryan McMahon to ground out.

After Arizona was retired in order in the first inning, the Diamondbacks rallied for three runs in the second after Ketel Marte doubled off Marquez.

Geraldo Perdomo then walked, and Nick Ahmed followed with a single that scored Marte and moved Perdomo to second.

With two outs, Herrera recorded his first career RBIs with a double that brought home Perdomo and Ahmed to put Arizona ahead 3-0.

Marte went 3 for 4 with a run to improve his batting average to .206.

Mike Yastrzemski leads Giants to series split with Cardinals

Mike Yastrzemski broke a sixth-inning tie with a solo home run, John Brebbia pitched out of a jam in the eighth, and the San Francisco Giants outlasted the visiting St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 Sunday for a second straight win and a split of their four-game series.

LaMonte Wade Jr. also homered for the Giants, who got five sharp innings from right-hander Jakob Junis in his first start for the team after he played the previous five seasons for the Kansas City Royals.

Juan Yepez hit his first big-league home run for the Cardinals, who completed a 3-3 trip and will get a rematch with the Giants at home next weekend.

Yastrzemski’s homer, his second of the season, came after the Cardinals had tied the score at 3 in the top of the sixth on a Harrison Bader infield out. Dylan Carlson’s ground-rule double set up the score.

Genesis Cabrera (1-1) got the first two Giants out in the sixth before Yastrzemski hit his blast to right field to account for the game’s final run.

The Cardinals threatened in the eighth when Carlson singled with two outs and Bader walked. But Brebbia, a former Cardinal, struck out Andrew Knizner with the potential tying run at second base to retain the one-run advantage.

Giants closer Camilo Doval then struck out Nolan Arenado with Paul Goldschmidt on second to end the ninth and register his fifth save.

Dominic Leone (2-0), who allowed the Cardinals’ game-tying run in the sixth in his only inning, was credited with the win.

A majority of the game’s scoring came in the second, when the Cardinals went up 2-0 on Yepez’s homer, only to see the Giants bounce back with three runs in their half of the inning.

Yepez, promoted for the first time earlier in the week, hit his homer in his 17th career at-bat. It came off Junis, who worked five innings, allowing just the two runs and three hits. He walked two and struck out five.

The Giants drew even at 2 almost immediately, when Wade hit his first homer of the season after Darin Ruf had walked to lead off the bottom of the second against Cardinals starter Daniel Hudson.

Singles by Mauricio Dubon and Curt Casali set up a Yastrzemski sacrifice fly one out later to give the Giants their first lead.

Hudson went 4 2/3 innings, charged with three runs on five hits. He walked four and did not record a strikeout.

Yastrzemski and Wade had two RBIs apiece, and Ruf collected two singles for the Giants, who outhit the visitors 7-6.

Yepez finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Cardinals. Carlson and Goldschmidt also had two hits apiece.

Pete Alonso powers Mets to DH split vs. Phillies

Pete Alonso hit two home runs with a single and drove in five runs as the New York Mets salvaged a doubleheader split with a 6-1 victory over the host Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

The Phillies captured the doubleheader opener 3-2.

Tomas Nido added two hits for the Mets, while starter Chris Bassitt (4-2) gave up five hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings with one walk and four strikeouts.

Jean Segura hit a home run with a single and a walk for the Phillies. Philadelphia managed only six hits, four of them singles.

Phillies starter Christopher Sanchez tossed only 2 1/3 innings and allowed two hits and two runs with two strikeouts and one walk. Sanchez (0-1) was an emergency starter after Zach Eflin was placed on the COVID-19 injured list.

Alonso launched a two-run home run to left field for a 2-0 Mets lead in the first inning. The Phillies closed within 2-1 in second inning when Segura lined a solo homer to right, the 100th of his career.

The Mets placed runners at first and second with one out in the fifth before Francisco Lindor popped out to second. Alonso then responded with a mammoth 426-foot three-run homer off Nick Nelson to left for a 5-1 lead.

New York went ahead 6-1 in the sixth when J.D. Davis scored from third on a wild pitch by Andrew Bellatti.

Philadelphia’s Rhys Hoskins doubled with two outs in the sixth and Segura walked. Bassitt was replaced with Chasen Shreve who struck out Bryson Stott to end the threat.

The Mets loaded the bases without a hit in the seventh yet failed to score.

In the ninth, Hoskins lined out to shortstop and Segura followed with a single. Stott grounded into a fielder’s choice and reached second on defensive indifference. Garrett Stubbs struck out looking to end the game.
