Pete Carroll: Seahawks not in market for QB

The Seattle Seahawks, seven weeks removed from the trade that sent quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, aren’t in the market for a veteran quarterback.

That was the message Thursday from Seahawks coach Pete Carroll while speaking to Seattle’s Sports Radio 950 KJR-AM.

“I don’t see us making a trade for anybody at all,” Carroll told the radio station, according to ESPN. “I don’t see that happening. But we’re certainly going to continue to be open to chances to help our club, and meanwhile we’re just going to be battling and competing our tails off. There’s always possibilities, so we keep open to that.”

Carroll had been asked specifically about Baker Mayfield, who lost his starting quarterback job in Cleveland when the Browns acquired Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans in mid-March.

The Seahawks’ current quarterback depth chart is topped by Drew Lock, who arrived in the Wilson deal, and Geno Smith.

Lock, 25, produced an 8-13 record as a starter while appearing in 24 games for Denver from 2019-21.

Smith, 31, went 1-2 as a starter for Seattle last year. He previously had a 12-18 mark as the New York Jets’ starter, and he lost his lone start for the New York Giants in 2017.

The Seahawks have two other quarterbacks on the roster: Jacob Eason, a 2020 fourth-round draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts who has yet to start an NFL game, and Levi Lewis, just signed as an undrafted free agent out of Louisiana.

Asked again by KJR about the Seahawks’ QB situation, Carroll said with a laugh, according to ESPN, “There’s no chance I’m going to tell you anything more than what I just told you, but I love you for trying. Honestly, we’re going to keep looking and seeing what’s available, but only to help our club and try to make us better. If the case presents itself, we’re going to be ready for it.”

Wilson, 33, was the Seahawks’ starter ever since he was drafted in 2012. He led the team to two Super Bowls, winning one, and made the Pro Bowl nine times.

Lynx visit Storm without All-Star Napheesa Collier

Two-time WNBA All-Star Napheesa Collier won’t be on the court on Friday night when her Minnesota Lynx visit the Seattle Storm in the season opener for both teams.

Collier, who won an Olympic gold medal with Team USA last summer, is pregnant and expecting later this month.

“I wish I could be there to see the team, be there with them in person, cheering them on,” said Collier, who earlier this month signed a three-year contract extension. “But it’s too close to the due date.”

Lynx GM/coach Cheryl Reeve said Collier will be missed.

“She can do things you can’t coach,” Reeve said. “It will be a challenge to play without her.”

That’s especially true in games against title contenders such as the Storm, who are led by two-time WNBA Finals MVP Breanna Stewart, 12-time All-Star Sue Bird and three-time All-Star Jewell Loyd.

Noelle Quinn, set to start her first full season as Seattle’s coach, said Bird and Stewart have erased any questions about their fitness with their strong preseason work. Stewart is coming off an injury at the end of last season that required surgery on her left foot, and Bird is 41.

“She’s in great shape,” Quinn said of Bird. “Defensively, she’s moving well. Offensively sharp. Knocking down shots.

“(Stewart) looks strong and active on defense. Her shot looks great.”

Both the Storm and Lynx are four-time league champions. Seattle won championships in 2020 and 2018, both coming more recently than when Minnesota last lifted the trophy in 2017.

With Collier out, Minnesota will rely on 6-foot-6 center Sylvia Fowles and 5-foot-11 guard Kayla McBride.

Fowles, the WNBA’s career leader in rebounds, has said she will retire after this season. She’s a two-time league champ and a two-time WNBA Finals MVP. Fowles, 36, won her fourth Defensive Player of the Year award last season and made 64 percent of her shots.

McBride averaged 13.7 points last season. Among the league’s double-figure scorers, she ranked 12th in true shooting percentage (58.6).

Chargers sign free agent LB Kyle Van Noy

The Los Angeles Chargers signed free agent linebacker Kyle Van Noy on Thursday, though the team did not disclose the terms of his deal.

Van Noy was released by the New England Patriots in March in a cost-cutting move.

“I am so excited to be part of the Bolt Gang,” Van Noy said Thursday in a video posted on the Chargers’ official Twitter account. “Very excited to get to work. I’m ready to get to work with all of the great players that we have here and with the coach, Coach Staley, he’s amazing. … Bolt Gang, Bolt Up, all of it. Let’s go!”

The Chargers have beefed up their defense in the offseason, adding cornerbacks J.C. Jackson and Bryce Callahan, linebacker Khalil Mack and defensive tackles Sebastian Joseph-Day and Austin Johnson in free agency. They also chose safety JT Woods in the third round of last week’s draft.

Van Noy, 30, was a free agent for the third consecutive offseason. He signed a two-year deal worth $12 million with the Patriots about a week after Miami released him in March 2021.

In his second tour of duty in New England in 2021, Van Noy recorded 66 tackles, five sacks and two forced fumbles in 16 games (eight starts). He also played for the Patriots from 2016-19.

Van Noy has 28.5 career sacks and three interceptions in 111 career games (73 starts) for the Detroit Lions, Patriots and Dolphins. The Lions selected Van Noy in the second round of the 2014 draft.

Jason Day (63) grabs first-round lead at Wells Fargo Championship

0

Australia’s Jason Day opened the Wells Fargo Championship with a 7-under-par 63 to take the first-round lead Thursday at Potomac, Md.

Day rang up eight birdies, five of them on the back nine, to establish a one-shot lead over Joel Dahmen. Five players were tied for third at 5-under 65: Matthew Wolff, Denny McCarthy, Englishmen Aaron Rai and Callum Tarren and France’s Paul Barjon.

Once the top-ranked player in the world, Day is down to No. 127 in the Official World Golf Ranking due in part to lingering injuries. He has not won on the PGA Tour since the 2018 Wells Fargo, his 12th career title.

That victory came at the tournament’s usual home of Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C. TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm is filling in for 2022, with Quail Hollow set to host the Presidents Cup in the fall.

“I don’t want to get ahead of myself because I know that it’s easy in the position I am right now, after a good round, to get ahead of myself and start talking where it could potentially go,” Day said. “But I think I’ve just got to stay as present as possible because if I can swing it the way I’m swinging it and have the short game and the touch that I have on the greens, I mean, I played some really good golf today.

“I feel like I can get back to where I need to be, but that’s a total decision up top in my head if I want to climb that mountain again.”

Dahmen had a hot start to his 64, posting six birdies and no bogeys on the front nine for a 29. After one bogey on No. 11, he hit his tee shot at the par-3 17th to 6 feet to set up a final birdie.

“I was surprised,” Dahmen said. “It’s a tough golf course, so I knew I was playing well and birdies were going early. But over 72 holes everyone’s going to get hot for a stretch. I happened to get hot on the front nine of the first round. Hopefully I can stay hot or get hot again somewhere along the way.”

McCarthy had a stellar round not far from his birthplace of Rockville, Md. He started on the back nine and birdied four of his first six holes.

“There’s been a lot of buildup to today’s first round and I was just excited to kind of get out here and get on the course in the morning,” McCarthy said. “It’s probably, there’s a little stress and tension leading up, but once I get on the golf course I feel really comfortable.”

A large group tied for eighth at 4-under 66 included Rickie Fowler. The longtime fan favorite has fallen to No. 146 in the world and hasn’t had a top-40 finish in his last eight starts, with five missed cuts in that span.

Fowler’s highlight shot came at the short par-4 14th hole, measuring just 305 yards. Fowler’s drive settled inside 11 feet of the pin and he made the putt for eagle.

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, who won the 2021 Wells Fargo at Quail Hollow, shot a 3-under 67. So did Spain’s Sergio Garcia, who holed out for eagle at No. 15.

But Garcia was caught on a television feed telling a PGA Tour rules official that he “can’t wait to leave this tour.” Garcia’s agent later confirmed that he applied for a release for the first event of the LIV Golf Invitational Series.

Ons Jabuer, Jessica Pegula advance to Madrid final

Ons Jabeur and Jessica Pegula continued their stellar runs at the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain by securing straight-sets semifinal victories Thursday to advance to their first WTA 1000 finals.

Jabeur, the eighth seed from Tunisia, defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-2, 6-3 in just 61 minutes. Pegula, the American No. 12 seed, handled Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 21 minutes.

Jabeur was dominant, winning 26 of 32 first-service points (81.3 percent), saving two of three break points and delivering five aces.

The 10th-ranked player in the world became the first ever Arab WTA player to reach a 1000-level final.

“I feel like I’m keeping to test myself, to test my patience,” Jabeur said. “To test, ‘OK, Ons, you said you want to be top five, you want to win titles — here it is, players, champions you are going to play against. Show me what you got.’ ”

Both players held serve in the second set until Jabeur, leading 4-3, won four straight points to break Alexandrova’s serve and take control.

“I know I was the favorite, I know I was playing good,” Jabeur said. “I knew also she was a little bit tired from playing a lot of matches. So mentally I was really focused and I was ready for the win and not accepting to lose this time.”

Pegula and Teichmann kept the lights on as their semifinal match lasted past midnight in Madrid. It was a slightly tighter match, but Pegula didn’t let it linger for long, winning four break points while being broken just twice.

Pegula lost a 4-2 lead in the second set when Teichmann rallied to tie it 4-4. But Pegula won break point to move back ahead and finished it off on her first match point in the next game.

“(Teichmann is) a super tricky lefty,” Pegula said. “It was hard because I felt like I couldn’t get a rhythm, really. Maybe the start of the first set she came out a little nervous and I was able to come out strong, which helped, but it was just tricky today.”

Teichmann could only win 19 of her 34 first-service points (55.9 percent).

Pegula, the daughter of Terry and Kim Pegula, who own the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres, is ranked 14th in the world.
