Kentucky Derby rushing to move beyond Bob Baffert, 2021 drama

0

The 148th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday evening at Churchill Downs in Louisville comes with a split focus on the 2022 field and plenty of attention on who’s not in Kentucky.

Absent from the group of 20 thoroughbreds to enter the gate for the Run for Roses are any horses prepared by controversial trainer Bob Baffert, who is suspended for this year’s race – and next year’s as well – after Medina Spirit, last year’s winner, was disqualified for testing positive for a steroid that’s banned from use on race day.

But that doesn’t mean Baffert won’t have a say in the race at Louisville, Ky.

Two of the horses he trained as 2-year-olds and until his ban was levied this winter, Santa Anita Derby winner Taiba (10-1) and the ultra-talented Messier (8-1), are in the field and trained by Tim Yakteen, a former Baffert apprentice.

“All I know is the horses are in my barn and I’m moving forward with them,” Yakteen said this week. “I’m just trying to do my job and stay focused and on point and accomplish that task.”

The purse for the world’s top race for 3-year-olds is $3 million, with $1.86 million going to the winner.

There are plenty of storylines beyond Baffert.

Steve Asmussen, the winningest trainer in North American history, will saddle Epicenter (7-2), one of the favorites, in an attempt to break a 0-for-23 losing streak in the Derby.

Epicenter, the Louisiana Derby winner, might be Asmussen’s best horse since Curlin, Derby runner-up in 2010 who eventually garnered Horse of the Year kudos twice, or Gun Runner, who finished third in 2016 and was the Horse of the Year in 2017.

“The great level of confidence I have in Epicenter is because it does not appear I can do too much with him, whereas several of the other runners I’ve had in the Derby, it was very apparent that you could,” Asmussen said. “I think it would be extremely arrogant of me to think Epicenter was Curlin or Gun Runner, but he is going faster sooner than they were.”

One of the other favorites will be Zandon (3-1), the Blue Grass Stakes winner, who survived a tough trip to draw away in the stretch and looks like he will appreciate the added distance for the 1 1/4-mile Derby. He is trained by Chad Brown, who’s been one of the sport’s top conditioners in recent years and another who’s still looking for his first Derby victory.

Zandon, to be ridden by Flavien Prat, drew post position 10 in the field.

“It’s a really good post,” Brown said. “It gives my jockey options. But the horse still needs to break. There’s some speed inside, and some speed outside.”

Florida Derby winner White Abarrio and Mo Donegal, who came from off the pace to capture the Wood Memorial in New York, are 10-1 in the morning odds. Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. and Todd Pletcher, respectively, a win by either horse would be no surprise.

Joseph Jr., who is from Barbados, captured the training title at Gulfstream Park’s recently concluded championship meet over perennial top-dog Pletcher and has become one of the top conditioners in the sport.

“White Abarrio needs to improve again to win the Kentucky Derby, but we think it’s within reach,” Joseph Jr. said. “We know it’s a competitive race, maybe seven or eight horses that could win it, but we feel like we have a horse going in the right direction.”

Pletcher, a two-time winning trainer in the Derby (2010, 2017), will have three horses in this year’s race, as Charge It (20-1) and Pioneer of Medina (30-1) join Mo Donegal.

UFC 274: Charles Oliveira defends title vs. Justin Gaethje

UFC 274 on Saturday night in Phoenix boasts a pair of intriguing title fights at the top of the bill — one that promises fireworks and one a rematch more than seven years in the making.

The evening’s main event is a lightweight title fight between champion Charles Oliveira (32-8) of Brazil and Arizona’s own Justin Gaethje (23-3).

This bout quite simply features two of the most exciting fighters in the sport.

Oliveira owns the UFC records for most finishes (18) and most submission victories (15), and he rides a 10-fight winning streak into the bout.

Gaethje’s reputation is underscored by the fact he has earned 10 of UFC’s “Fight of the Night” and “Performance of the Night” bonuses in his first nine UFC fights. He’s the winner of five out of his last six.

For his part, Oliveira says he knows Gaethje can bring it, and he’s ready to fight fire with fire.

“Listen, he is a truck,” Oliveira said at Wednesday’s media day. “He only moves forward; I only move forward. So, there’s definitely gonna be collisions, definitely gonna be a clash. I’m not a jiu-jitsu fighter anymore. I’m a complete MMA fighter. I want everyone to know.”

The evening’s co-feature is a killer rematch for the UFC strawweight title between champion Rose Namajunas (11-4) and former titleholder Carla Esparza (18-6).

In December 2014, Esparza defeated Namajunas in the finals of a tournament to crown the UFC’s first 115-pound champion. That was Namajunas’ fourth career pro fight, underscoring her potential.

She has since lived up to that hype by becoming the division’s first two-time titleholder, using a well-rounded offense and underrated toughness to impose her will.

Esparza, meanwhile, dropped the title in 2015 and for a while was considered an afterthought in the division. But the wrestling-heavy Esparza has vastly improved her stand-up game and has won five consecutive fights over the past three years to earn her way back to another title shot.

Celebrity Amber Heard Testifies on Johnny Depp’s ‘out-of-control’ Tendencies, Threats, Sexual Abuse

0

Celebrity Actress Amber Heard testified that while under the influence of drugs, Johnny Depp did a “cavity search” on her, as part of her ex-alleged husband’s practice of sexual assault.

She claimed in court that the alleged attack occurred in 2013. Heard claimed Depp wrongly accused her of adultery, trashed the trailer they were staying in, and was overall “not making sense.” Heard testified that she was against cocaine use and was attempting to help Depp stay sober at the time, so the allegations “made no sense.” However, she claimed that Depp assaulted her.

In another incident, Heard claimed she and Depp were on a flight to Russia when she thought it would be a nice idea to do drugs with Johnny. They took MDMA on the plane, and as she was against Depp’s cocaine use and drinking, she thought MDMA was a “lovey drug,” and wanted to be the “fun girlfriend” at the time.

Depp took “several” capsules, according to Heard, and everything was great until a flight attendant leaned into Heard’s seat. She claimed, Depp grabbed her arm and told her not to touch Heard. Heard testified that a similar incident had taken place at Hicksville, where Depp threatened the attendant he could break her wrist, as he did on the plane.

Hughes claimed that Depp’s sexual assaults were frequently committed while he was in a “drug-fueled rage.” She went on to say that one of the “most serious incidents of sexual abuse Heard had to undergo” occurred during a confrontation with Depp in Australia, during which the actor penetrated Heard with a vodka bottle. Other incidents include the time when he hung her dog out of their moving car window and another when he threatened to kill her aboard a yacht he was selling to J.K. Rowling.

Describing the first time Depp ostensibly slapped her, Heard said he called her names before the assault. The second smack placed her on the carpet. When she realized it was wrong and had to leave him, it was painful as she didn’t want to. Depp immediately began crying, appeared genuinely apologetic, but she could not forgive him since it meant it would happen again.

According to Heard, he began accusing her of adultery in 2012, and physical aggression became increasingly frequent. He started accusing her and then beating the walls near her head, which was a ‘regular occurrence in 2012 when he was drunk.’

Dr. Dawn Hughes, a professional and forensic psychologist who specializes in domestic violence, claimed that Depp’s sexual assaults were frequently committed while he was in a “drug-fueled rage.”

She went on to say that one of the most serious incidents of sexual abuse Heard had to undergo occurred during a confrontation with Depp in Australia, during which the actor penetrated Heard with a vodka bottle. She also testified that Heard suffered post-trauma stress disorder because of Depp’s “intimate partner violence.”

California’s Governor Gavin Newsom signs WEB 3 Blockchain Executive Order to protect Americans

0

On May 4, California became the first state to create a transparent regulatory and business environment for Web3 companies, after Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order. The order will foster harmony between federal and state approaches to Web3 which is a growing industry with a $3 trillion market cap in November 2021. It continues to expand at an accelerated rate.

According to a published article from the Office of Governor Newsom, the executive order mentions that the Golden State has the following seven priorities:
To create a transparent and consistent business environment for companies who operate in blockchain.
To collect feedback from a large number of stakeholders, to create a regulatory approach.
To collect feedback from different stakeholders for potential blockchain applications as well as ventures
To engage in public process and to exercise statutory authority and develop a comprehensive regulatory approach.
To encourage as well as engage in regulatory clarity.
To explore opportunities where blockchain technologies can be used to address public-serving as well as emerging needs.
To identify opportunities that can create a research as well as a workforce environment.

Governor Gavin Newsom called the Golden State a “hub of innovation.” He said that his government would use the emerging technology to set up the state for success. He also said that this technology would be leveraged for the public good as well as to spur responsible innovation and protect consumers.

He added that governments often lagged behind technological advancements. So, his government would get “ahead of the curve” on this technology. He noted that they would lay a foundation that would let both consumers and businesses thrive.

President Biden has been acting to bring regulatory clarity to such emerging products and services. The executive order from California would move the state forward on a path that would be in harmony with federal rules and guidelines and would also bring regulatory clarity for businesses, while protecting consumers.

Shell reports highest quarter profit since 2008, oil giant’s shares rise by 3%

0

On Thursday, Shell reported its highest profit since 2008 in the quarter ending March as commodity and fuels prices have seen an unprecedented rise. This has led to a call for a one-off windfall tax on oil and gas companies in the U.K., to help the nation’s households deal with huge energy bills that keep rising. Oil and gas companies worldwide including BP in the U.K., Total Energies in France, Equinor in Norway and Chevron and Exxon Mobil in the U.S. also reported huge profits in the quarter.

Although Shell said it would have to write off $4 billion to $5 billion in assets due to withdrawal from Russia, the oil company said that it would not impact adjusted earnings. Unions and environmental groups including Friends of the Earth Scotland termed the profits as “obscene” and said that it was an indication of how broken the energy system was, in the U.K., with its huge dependence on fossil fuels.

The company posted adjusted earnings of $9.1 billion for the quarter through the end of March. This was similar to what was estimates by analysts, according to a Refinitiv survey. Last year, the reported earnings in the same quarter were $3.2 billion, while the fourth quarter earnings report was $6.4 billion.

Other announcements included:

A plan to increase first quarter dividend by $0.25 per share, which is roughly 4 percent.
Buy back program of $4 billion completed; rest of $8.5 billion buy back program would be completed before announcing second quarter earnings.
It took $3.9 billion of post-tax charges due to its exit from Russia.

On Thursday morning Shell shares rose by 8 percent. The oil and gas industry has seen a huge rise in profit in companies all around the world, despite increased costs due to many companies exiting from Russia.

On Wednesday, in its newest economic sanctions, the European Union announced that it was planning to ban Russian oil imports in six months and refined products by the end of 2022. This resulted in an increase in oil price futures.

Starbucks to launch Web3 platform and NFTs related to coffee chain

0

On Tuesday, Starbucks published a company blog post that detailed its plan to launch a Web3 platform in future and link it to its app. It will also launch a series of non fungible tokens (NFT) that will provide its customers with unique experiences related to community building as well to increase engagement of its customers with its brand, later this year. The benefits of its NFTs will be linked to its physical locations.

The blog post mentioned that the branded NFTs would bring their “rich heritage of coffee art and storytelling” to their customers. It mentioned that coffee chain would would create a “Starbucks Digital Community Web3 platform” that would potentially combine “an approachable, widely accessible front-end backed by the right block technologies that would be both fast as well as inexpensive.

The post added that the company’s approach to blockchain technology will begin with “collections backed by blockchains.” It said that the infrastructure would be sustainable as it had to be consistent with their “multi-decade commitment to sustainability.”

Starbucks said that their approach would be phased and would debut their initial “NFT collection, membership and community, later this year.” The company is planning to use its heritage collections in its first NFT collection, using its collections of coffee art and storytelling.

The post added that the first collection will form the core digital community and backbone and future collections and collaborations of Starbucks will build on this new ecosystem.

The Starbucks app is the second most used one in the U.S., after Apple Pay. It has more than 30 million active users each day. The company will be able to tap this huge consumer base if and when it links its future fully fledged “Starbucks Digital Community Web3 platform” to mobile payments in-store.

Celebrity Cameron Diaz evokes nostalgia recreating ‘There’s Something About Mary’ Hair Gel moment

0

On Tuesday, celebrity actor Cameron Diaz took fans and followers back by 24 years when she recreated an iconic “hair gel” moment from the movie “There’s Something About Mary.” The infamous scene in the movie also involved inputs from her boyfriend played by Ben Stiller. She posted a picture of her gelled hairstyle, similar to the scene in the movie, more than two decades ago but we doubt whether she used the same gel product.

The new Instagram video begins with comedian Benito Skinner traveling by car to Cameron Diaz’s home. He wonders if it is strange to take a person’s own wine brand to their home. The next shot shows boxes of wine from Cameron Diaz’s brand called Avaline, which she started with her friend Katherine Power.

Cameron Diaz is seen at home, scrolling through her page on IMDb when she comes across a photo of herself with hair gel hairstyle from her hit movie, “There’s Something About Mary.” She starts laughing.

The doorbell rings and Skinner jumps in from the side singing “I’m a Believer,” which is a popular song from another hit film of hers called “Shrek.”

The comedian wears an almost skintight red dress similar to the one Cameron Diaz wore in “There’s Something About Mary.” He also sports a similar hairstyle.

There’s a slight awkward pause following which the celebrity star is seen wearing an identical outfit and sports a similar dress and hairstyle as Skinner as well as her erstwhile movie character Mary.

Both of them open cans of Avaline, as they head outside. The video ends.

Cameron Diaz captioned the video mentioning that bringing Avaline was not the weirdest part of their dinner while the comedian replies calling her a “twin.”

The video got a lot of positive comments from fans and followers.

Although Diaz retired in 2014, after playing Miss Hannigan in Annie, she will be seen as a guest judge on the popular RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 7 upcoming, all-winners season. The celebrity star has mentioned in the past that she is a Drag Race super fan.

Cardinals bringing big bats to Giants’ ballpark

Two of the most productive visiting hitters in the history of San Francisco’s Oracle Park take aim at struggling Giants starter Logan Webb when the St. Louis Cardinals kick off a four-game visit on Thursday night.

Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt, former National League West rivals of the Giants, have teamed up in St. Louis and look to continue their high-powered assault on enemy territory.

Since Oracle Park’s opening in 2000, Goldschmidt has more homers (13) than any other visitor. Right behind is Arenado with 12.

Goldschmidt, a 12-year veteran who played his first eight seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, also leads all Oracle Park visitors in runs (44) and doubles (21). He has compiled a career average of .327 and career OPS of .995 at the Giants’ home park.

A 10-year veteran who was a member of the Colorado Rockies for eight seasons, Arenado isn’t far behind in several categories. His career average at Oracle Park is .277, with an OPS of .840.

Neither slugger has recorded an extra-base hit against Webb in his career. Goldschmidt has gone 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Arenado has been limited to 1-for-7 with a strikeout.

Arenado warmed up for his San Francisco visit with a single, homer and five RBIs in a 10-0 win at Kansas City on Wednesday. The homer was his seventh of the season, which is tied for second-most in the NL behind C.J. Cron’s nine.

The two-hit game raised his season average to .360, fourth-highest in the NL.

Goldschmidt collected three walks and scored a run. He ranks tied for 13th in the NL in walks with 13.

The Cardinals had totaled just two runs in splitting their first two games of the series with the Royals, something that was weighing on Arenado’s mind when he stepped to the plate in the first inning Wednesday with two men on.

“We’ve just got to be better,” said Arenado, whose first at-bat resulted in a three-run homer. “We are better. I believe it. We have to start showing it. We don’t want to waste games.”

Webb (3-1, 3.26 ERA) is coming off consecutive wins over the Nationals, but wasn’t on top of his game in either, allowing a total of 18 hits and six runs over 12 2/3 innings.

The 25-year-old right-hander has gone just 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in two career starts against the Giants.

He’s scheduled to be opposed by fellow righty Miles Mikolas (1-1, 1.52), who hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his five starts this season.

The 33-year-old has gone 1-1 with a 3.31 ERA in six career games against the Giants, including two starts. He has never won at Oracle Park, going 0-1 with a 6.35 ERA in three games (one start).

He served up a grand slam to Austin Slater in an 8-4 loss in that lone start in 2018.

Mikolas will be facing a Giants team shut down by Los Angeles Dodgers pitching in a two-game sweep in Southern California the last two nights.

San Francisco manager Gabe Kapler pinpointed a problem after Wednesday’s 9-1 defeat that also was a factor in the series-opening 3-1 defeat.

“When we get leadoff hitters on consistently, we’re going to score runs,” he said. “(That) didn’t happen in this series, and certainly didn’t happen in (Wednesday’s) game.”
