Report: Commanders sign G Trai Turner

The Washington Commanders are signing free-agent guard Trai Turner to a one-year, $3 million contract, ESPN reported Monday.

Turner, 28, was selected in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers, where he played for current Commanders coach Ron Rivera. He went to five straight Pro Bowls with the Panthers before being traded to the Los Angeles Chargers prior to the 2020 season.

In 2021, he signed a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers and started all 17 games.

Over eight NFL seasons, Turner has played in 110 games (106 starts).

Celtics search for plan to contain Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Boston Celtics received rave reviews for keeping Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant in check during their Eastern Conference first-round series.

Boston was not as fortunate against Giannis Antetokounmpo, who posted his second career playoff triple-double, in Milwaukee’s series-opening victory. The Celtics will look for a better performance against him Tuesday as they try to even their conference semifinal series at one victory apiece in Game 2 in Boston.

Antetokounmpo collected 24 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists in Milwaukee’s 101-89 win on Sunday afternoon. The two-time NBA MVP provided the signature moment in the fourth quarter after tossing the ball high off the backboard and following it to the rim for an emphatic slam dunk.

“I can’t do that. I wouldn’t even think about trying,” teammate Jrue Holiday said of the self alley-oop by the star player known as the Greek Freak. “He’s got a great nickname.”

“That’s just pure talent, just pure instinct,” Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said. “He’s a great player. He does things that are unique and special and timely. That’s one of those plays where you’re happy he’s on our side.”

So, what did it do the other side? After all, the Celtics touted the NBA’s top defense in the regular season and effectively shut down Durant and Kyrie Irving en route to sweeping the Nets in the first round of the playoffs.

“This one should hurt a little bit,” the Celtics’ Al Horford said. “We have an opportunity now to learn from this game, see how we can be better as a group and come out and do that Tuesday.”

Speaking of hurt, Boston’s Marcus Smart sustained an injury to his right arm late in the first half on Sunday. The newly crowned NBA Defensive Player of the Year returned for the second half, but he is also nursing a troublesome right quad contusion. He will be listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game, Celtics coach Ime Udoka said.

“I think the quad bothered him more than the shoulder,” Udoka said. “But you know he’s gonna play through a lot and it could affect him. … He’s getting iced down now, so he’ll be OK.”

Now, will Boston stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown be OK after being held in check by Milwaukee’s bigger bodies and active perimeter defense?

Tatum (4 of 13) and Brown (6 of 18) combined to make just 10 of 31 shots from the floor in the series opener. The Celtics, as a team, sank 28 of 84 attempts from the floor (33.3 percent) and converted just 10 of 31 attempts in the paint (32.3 percent).

“Give credit to Milwaukee,” Brown said. “They did a good job and had a good plan, but we missed a lot of open shots. They hit us in the mouth so we gotta be ready for the next one.”

Boston also will need to keep an eye on Holiday, who bounced back from a 10-point performance in Milwaukee’s series-clinching victory over the Chicago Bulls. Holiday recorded 25 points, nine rebounds and three steals on Sunday.

Reports: Saints agree on deal with S Tyrann Mathieu

The Saints are in agreement on a contract with All-Pro safety and New Orleans native Tyrann Mathieu, multiple outlets reported Monday.

The deal is expected to be signed Tuesday, per the reports.

Mathieu, who was born and raised in New Orleans, visited with the Saints in early April.

The three-time All-Pro, who turns 30 on May 13, started 16 games for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021 and posted 76 tackles, three interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), three fumble recoveries and one sack.

A third-round pick out of LSU in 2013, Mathieu has 26 interceptions (three pick-sixes) and 10 sacks in 129 contests (120 starts) with the Arizona Cardinals (2013-17), Houston Texans (2018) and Chiefs. He won Super Bowl LIV in his first season with Kansas City.

LSU football posted a video tribute to Mathieu, saying “Louisiana’s son is coming home.”

The Saints selected only five players in the 2022 NFL Draft: wide receiver Chris Olave and offensive tackle Trevor Penning in the first round, cornerback Alontae Taylor in the second round, linebacker D’Marco Jackson in the fifth round and defensive tackle Jordan Jackson in the sixth.

Magic G Jalen Suggs undergoes ankle surgery

Orlando Magic point guard Jalen Suggs underwent surgery to repair a slight stress fracture in his right ankle.

Suggs, 20, had the surgery last week, the team said Monday.

“In assessing Jalen’s right ankle at the conclusion of the season, and consulting with multiple doctors, we came to the determination to undergo this preventative measure,” Magic general manager Jeff Weltman said in a statement. “We feel by addressing this now Jalen can still have a productive summer leading into training camp.”

Suggs averaged 11.8 points, 4.4 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 48 games (45 starts) as a rookie in 2021-22. The Magic selected Suggs No. 5 overall in the 2021 draft out of Gonzaga.

Falcons to release veteran RB Mike Davis

The Atlanta Falcons are set to release veteran running back Mike Davis in a move that will save the team $2.5 million against the salary cap, he confirmed in a tweet Monday.

“I appreciate everything the falcons did for me. I was able to play for my hometown and impact my community. I appreciate the fans and my family,” Davis said in the tweet.

Davis, 29, rushed for 503 yards and three touchdowns in 17 games (eight starts) for the Falcons in 2021. He also caught 44 passes for 259 yards and a score.

Davis has rushed for 2,034 yards and 14 TDs in 79 games (30 starts) for five different teams. He started his career with the San Francisco 49ers after they selected him in the fourth round of the 2015 draft.

Zandon installed as morning-line favorite for Kentucky Derby

0

Zandon was installed as the 3-1 morning-line favorite for Saturday’s 148th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs and will break from the No. 10 spot after post positions were selected Monday.

The post position puts Zandon in the middle of the 20-horse field at Louisville, Ky., for the $3 million opening race of the Triple Crown season, which is exclusively for 3-year-olds.

Epicenter was declared the second betting favorite at 7-2, while drawing the No. 3 post. Messier will be the third favorite at 8-1 and will break from the No. 6 post. Mo Donegal (No. 1 post) and White Abarrio (No. 15) each were given 10-1 odds.

This year’s Derby will proceed without Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who was handed a two-year ban at the track after his horse Medina Spirit won last year’s race only to be disqualified following a drug test.

Baffert originally was the trainer of Messier, with Tim Yakteen taking over that role. Yakteen also has 12-1 choice Taiba in the Kentucky Derby field after the colt won the Santa Anita Derby at Arcadia, Calif., last month.

Nest was installed as 5-2 favorite for Friday’s Kentucky Oaks for top 3-year-old fillies and will break from the No. 4 post. Kathleen O. was selected the 7-2 second betting choice and will break from the No. 10 post.

Greg Norman: Phil Mickelson’s comments impacted Saudi-backed tour

0

Greg Norman, a former two-time major championship winner who is fronting a new golf league backed by Saudi Arabian investors, confirmed on Monday that Phil Mickelson’s recent comments complicated things for the upstart operation.

“There’s no question (it) hurt,” Norman told ESPN. “It hurt a lot of aspects. It hurt the PGA Tour. It hurt us. It hurt the game of golf. It hurt Phil. So yeah, across all fronts. It wasn’t just specifically to us. But it definitely created negative momentum against us.”

Norman is the CEO of the LIV Golf Invitational Series, formerly known as the Super Golf League. As the venture was trying to get rolling, comments from Mickelson published on Feb. 15, after a November interview with author Alan Shipnuck, caused a firestorm.

Mickelson referenced the killing of Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi and called the Saudi Arabians “scary motherf—s to get involved with.” He went on to explain why he still had interest in joining the Saudi-backed league.

“(They) have a horrible record on human rights,” Mickelson was said, according to Shipnuck. “They execute people over there for being gay. Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates.

“They’ve been able to get by with manipulative, coercive, strong-arm tactics because we, the players, had no recourse.”

Norman said Monday that nearly one third of the top 50 players in the world were committed to playing in the new golf tour. When Mickelson’s comments were revealed, many top players reaffirmed their commitment to playing on the PGA Tour.

“Quite honestly, we were ready to launch (in February),” Norman said to ESPN. “We had enough players in our strength of field, or minimal viable product, ready to come on board. And when all of that happened, everybody got the jitters, and the PGA Tour threatened people with lifetime bans and stuff like that.”

Originally set to be a 14-event schedule, the LIV Golf Invitational Series has restructured itself with a potential eight-event season. Of those, five are expected to take place in the United States. A total of $255 million is expected to be up for grabs.

Mickelson has since filed a request to play in an event that conflicts with the PGA Tour, signaling his desire to still play in the LIV Golf Invitational Series. A June 9-11 tournament is set for London and will be open to 48 players set to compete on 12 four-man teams.

“I’ve been very pleasantly surprised,” Norman said. “What has been talked about in the media and what is reality are two different things. We know what’s happening with a lot of interest expressed. From an expectation standpoint, we’ve got a lot of interest from significantly named players.”

Chase Elliott ends drought at rain-delayed Dover

NASCAR Cup Series points leader Chase Elliott snapped a career-high 26-race winless streak Monday afternoon by taking the checkered flag at the DuraMAX Drydene 400 at Dover Motor Speedway in Delaware.

Resuming the race that was interrupted by rain on Sunday, Elliott’s No. 9 Chevrolet passed Ross Chastain with just over 50 laps to go and finished 2.577 seconds ahead of runner-up Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

“We had some good circumstances finally,” said Elliott, whose 14th career triumph made him the final of the four Hendrick Motorsports drivers to record a win this season. “I really appreciate (crew chief) Alan (Gustafson) and our entire team for just sticking with it. We’ve had some tough races over the past four or five months.”

The victory was the first for Elliott since winning at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., last July 4. That was his second win of 2021, both on road courses.

His last win on an oval was at Phoenix in the season finale on Nov. 8, 2020, to close out his championship-winning season — a span of 46 races.

Elliott led 73 of the 400 laps on Dover’s “Monster Mile,” where he won for the second time (2018).

Stenhouse’s previous best finish in the No. 47 Chevrolet this season was 10th at Fontana, Calif., on Feb. 27.

“It’s been a rough start to the season,” Stenhouse said. “Our short-track program has been off, and all of our other good races where we’ve had good runs going, something’s always happened. Really good to put this all together.”

Rounding out the top five were Chastain, Christopher Bell and defending Dover winner Alex Bowman in a race marred by 13 caution periods.

When the race restarted Monday after not even reaching the ending of Stage 1 Sunday, leader Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin took turns at the point, but both drivers ran into problems stemming from tire issues.

After seeing Hamlin win Stage 1 but having a loose tire get away during a pit stop, Larson looped his No. 5 Chevrolet as a tire went down, causing minor damage to his car.

Seeking a Cup victory for the third time on his birthday, Kyle Busch took the lead on Lap 212. He held the top spot when Hamlin’s Toyota suffered damage after hitting Cody Ware after the Ford driver spun off Turn 4 shortly before the second stage ended.

Involved in an incident shortly after the race restarted, Ryan Blaney rallied to beat Busch to the Stage 2 win, but Busch’s No. 18 was soon out front again.

With 100 laps left, Busch led Bowman by 1.486 seconds, but Busch lost the lead to Martin Truex Jr. by pitting just before the 11th caution period.

At the field’s rear on the restart, Bowman and Busch eventually bounced back to finish fifth and seventh, respectively.

James Madison cancels softball season after Lauren Bernett’s death

0

James Madison announced Monday that it has canceled the rest of its softball season in the wake of player Lauren Bernett’s suicide last week.

The decision comes after the school had nixed a doubleheader against Longwood and a series against Delaware over the weekend. The regular season was scheduled to end on Saturday and had four games remaining.

“This was an extremely difficult decision and one that was not made lightly,” JMU head coach Loren LaPorte said. “We are so grateful for the support of our fans all season and for the love from the softball community during the past week. We will use this time to continue healing and to honor Lauren’s memory while finishing the academic semester strong. Most importantly, we’re thinking about our graduating seniors whose careers have come to an abrupt conclusion.”

The school, located in Harrisonburg, Va., announced the passing of the sophomore catcher on Tuesday. The Western Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Virginia determined the cause of death Thursday.

Bernett had just been named the softball Player of the Week in the Colonial Athletic Association after batting .788 (7-for-9) with seven RBIs and four runs during a three-game sweep of Drexel.

On April 16, she tied a single-game JMU record with seven RBIs in a win against College of Charleston.

In 2021, she helped the Dukes reach the Women’s College World Series for the first time. They made headlines there with a 4-3 win against No. 1-ranked Oklahoma in their opening game.

Netflix cancels celebrity Meghan Markle’s animated series ‘Pearl’ as stocks and subscriptions fall

The biggest streaming platform Netflix announced disappointing results recently and also announced the axing of several shows and series. One among these is “Pearl” an animated series about the life of a young girl that reportedly traced the life of “Suits” celebrity Meghan Markle. She and Prince Harry had signed a million dollar lucrative deal with Netflix.

Pearl, which is one of the many projects Netflix had with Archewell Productions, was in the development stage. The streaming platform expects to continue working with the celebrity pair. The recently concluded Invictus Games, of which Prince Harry is a patron, is being made into a documentary series.

On Sunday, Deadline reported that tech streaming platform had quietly dropped the animated series “Pearl” that was created by Meghan Markle. It was supposed to be the first animated series produced by their production house.

The series that had David Furnish, along with Megan Markle, had been announced with a lot of fanfare, last year, in summer. The series was said to be centered on a 12-year old girl’s adventures as she found inspiration through several influential women in history.

Markle had gushed about the project saying that their heroine Pearl was “on a journey of self discovery” as she faced the challenges that life threw at her (and almost each one of us as well) every day.

The project was in the development stage, when it was dropped and sources say that Netflix is hoping to continue working with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in other projects including the documentary series “Heart of Invictus.”

Meghan Markle and David Furnish’s “Pearl” is not the only kids series dropped by the streaming platform. Last week, Netflix had also dropped two more kids animated series that were in production. They are Dino DayCare whose executive producer is Chris Nee, popularity known for producing Ada Twist, Scientist and Doc McStuffins and Boons and Curses, which is a comedy-action series created by Jaydeep Hasrajani.
