Panthers pick up 5th-year option on DE Brian Burns

The Carolina Panthers will exercise their fifth-year option on Pro Bowl edge rusher Brian Burns for 2023.

Burns, 24, will make $16 million guaranteed in 2023.

“We will pick up the fifth-year option and we have hopes of extending him after that,” Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer said Tuesday during a draft week press conference.

Burns tied his career high with nine sacks in 2021, earning Pro Bowl honors. He started 16 of 17 games. Burns has 25.5 sacks in 48 career games (35 starts) since the Panthers selected him No. 16 overall out of Florida State in the 2019 draft.

Fitterer also provided some insight into the team’s draft thinking, saying the Panthers could select a quarterback at the spot or trade out of the pick.

The general manager said he spoke to incumbent quarterback Sam Darnold on Monday to inform him of Carolina’s desire to add a quarterback in the draft.

“In our conversation, I said, ‘Hey, listen, we are going to add to (the quarterback) group. Through this weekend, there’s a pretty good chance we could add to this group,'” Fitterer said. “It’s an open competition. It’s his spot right now, but whoever can take this spot and run with it, we’re going to do that. He was good with it, we’re all on the same page and we know we need to stabilize that position. And we’re looking forward to adding to it.”

Fitterer said there are a couple of quarterbacks the team would be comfortable taking No. 6 overall. However, he said the team would listen to offers to trade out of the pick, though Fitterer would not want to fall back further than the mid-teens.

The first round is Thursday night.

Jets aim to ignite offense against struggling Flyers

The quest to finish their respective disappointing seasons on a positive note likely is the goal for both the Winnipeg Jets and Philadelphia Flyers.

Looking to win back-to-back home games for the first time in a month, the Jets will host the Flyers on Wednesday night.

Winnipeg (36-32-11, 83 points) held out hopes of a playoff berth after going 10-5-1 in March. But a 3-6-1 record this month means they will miss the postseason for the first time in five years.

The Jets, however, did snap a four-game losing streak with Sunday’s 4-1 victory over Western Conference leader Colorado. Kyle Connor scored his 45th goal — the most in franchise history since relocating to Winnipeg in 2011 — and Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves for his 200th career victory.

It was an all-around needed showing for the Jets, who totaled seven goals and were shut out once during their four-game skid.

“We were solid in our details, we just grinded it out until the opportunity was there,” said Hellebuyck, who has set career highs with 65 starts and 27 losses this season.

“The firing power we have in this locker room — we can score at any moment.”

Connor is at the forefront of Winnipeg’s offense, setting career highs for goals, assists (44) and points (89). He also has three more games to reach the coveted 50-goal mark.

“If it happens, it happens,” Connor told the Jets’ official website. “It’s not going to change my mentality to how I approach the game.”

Each of Winnipeg’s final three games is at home, where it’s looking to win back-to-back contests for the first time since March 25 and 27. Connor was responsible for the Jets’ lone goal and Hellebuyck made 33 saves during a 3-1 loss at Philadelphia on Feb. 1.

Since that victory, however, the Flyers (25-44-11, 61 points) are 10-22-3. Philadelphia is just 4-18-2 in its past 24 road games.

The Flyers will look to rebound from their most road defeat, a 3-1 setback at Chicago on Monday. Kevin Hayes scored his 10th goal of the season and Felix Sandstrom stopped 30 shots, but Philadelphia couldn’t overcome an early two-goal deficit.

“No matter what happens during the game, just make sure you have the same mentality,” said Flyers forward Travis Konecny, who has three goals and four assists during a six-game point streak.

“You can’t get up too high, you can’t get down. You just try to stay with the process, and just trust that you’re going to have an opportunity to win the game.”

With Philadelphia’s No. 1 netminder Carter Hart done for the season with a lower-body injury and Sandstrom starting the second game of the back-to-back set, Martin Jones could be back in net for this contest.

Jones has stopped 68 of 72 shots to win his past two starts.

Konecny scored a goal against Winnipeg in February.

Bulls star Zach LaVine enters health and safety protocol

Chicago Bulls All-Star Zach LaVine has entered the NBA’s health and safety protocol for the third time this season.

The timing means the Bulls will likely have to stave off elimination without him Wednesday night against the host Milwaukee Bucks, who hold a 3-1 lead in the Eastern Conference first-round series.

LaVine is averaging 19.3 points, 6.0 assists and 5.3 rebounds through four games in the series against the reigning NBA champions. He scored a team-high 24 points in Sunday’s 119-95 loss in Game 3.

He averaged 24.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 67 games (all starts) during the regular season, earning his second straight All-Star selection.

Chicago could also be without guard Alex Caruso, who is in the concussion protocol after getting hit in the face in Sunday’s game.

The Bulls are still without their primary point guard, Lonzo Ball, who missed half of the season due to a knee injury that required surgery.

MLB, union agree to 14 pitchers on roster for now

Major league teams may continue to keep as many as 14 pitchers on their active rosters through May 29.

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association reached agreement on the plan Tuesday.

Before the season, MLB and the union agreed to 28-member rosters, up from 26, and to increase the number of allowed pitchers from 13 to 14 through May 1. The agreement was struck out of health concerns for players coming out of a shortened spring training after a 99-day lockout.

The rosters will shrink to 26 on May 2 but the option for the additional pitcher will remain a few weeks longer.

Rosters will expand again on Sept. 1, when all teams must have 28 players on the active roster — 29 on days of doubleheaders — through the end of the regular season.

Bills pick up fifth-year option on DT Ed Oliver

The Bills exercised the fifth-year option on defensive tackle Ed Oliver, keeping him in Buffalo through at least the 2023 season.

The Bills announced the move on Tuesday. Oliver, who played in college at Houston, was the ninth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

He will earn $10.75 million in 2023. He signed a four-year, $19.56 million rookie contract in 2019.

Oliver, 24, hasn’t missed a regular-season game, playing in 49 career games (40 starts). He became a starter midway through his rookie season. In his career, he has 117 tackles (21 for loss), 12 sacks, eight passes defensed and three forced fumbles.

In 17 games in 2021, he had 41 tackles, four sacks and a forced fumble as the Bills won the AFC East.

In six career playoff games, Oliver has 17 tackles and a sack.

Jackets’ Boone Jenner, Sean Kuraly to miss last 3 games

Columbus Blue Jackets captain Boone Jenner and fellow forward Sean Kuraly will miss the season’s final three games due to injuries, the team announced Tuesday.

Jenner has been out since March 11 with lower-back injury and Kuraly sustained a broken toe during Sunday’s 5-2 win against the visiting Edmonton Oilers.

The Blue Jackets (36-36-7, 79 points) have been eliminated from playoff contention. Their season finale is Friday night against the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

Jenner, 28, registered 44 points (23 goals, 21 assists) in 59 games in his ninth season with Columbus. His goals and point totals were his highest since 2015-16.

Kuraly, 29, posted 30 points (14 goals, 16 assists) in 77 games in his first season with the Blue Jackets after five seasons with the Boston Bruins. His goals, points and games were all career highs.

Jay Wright intrigued by future NBA possibility

Recently retired Villanova coach Jay Wright said Tuesday he could envision himself coaching in the NBA — one day.

A guest on “Keyshawn, JWill & Max” on ESPN, Wright said working with NBA players during the Olympics opened his eyes to the possibility down the road, but right now he’s looking forward to time off.

Wright, 60, retired last Wednesday after 21 years and two national titles at Villanova.

“Right now I definitely need a break,” Wright said. “Right now I’m looking forward to this (special assistant) position at Villanova. But honestly, down the road, I’d be lying — I don’t know what I’m going to feel like.”

Wright worked under Gregg Popovich at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as an assistant on Team USA’s staff. The team won the gold medal.

He said he feels no regret about his career choice a few days into retirement.

“I know I made the right decision, because I don’t think going into next year I’d be able to do the things I need to do to keep this program at a high level,” Wright said. “But I’m going to take this year and really throw myself into this position at Villanova, and then see what’s out there. I just didn’t want to be the coach at Villanova and not be 100 percent in.”

Kyle Neptune, 37, is taking over for Wright. Most recently the coach at Fordham, Neptune worked as an assistant coach on Wright’s Villanova staff for 10 years.

Trevor Bauer sues woman who accused him of sexual assault

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer is suing the woman who accused him of sexual assault, contending her motive was to destroy his “reputation and baseball career, garner attention for herself, and extract millions of dollars” from him.

The suit was filed Monday in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and is seeking unspecified monetary and punitive damages. Bauer contends the woman “fabricated allegations of sexual assault” and “made false and malicious statements” as she sought a domestic violence restraining order last June 29.

That filing came a day after Bauer’s most recent pitching performance for the Dodgers, with whom he signed a three-year, $102 million contract before the 2021 season. He has been on Major League Baseball administrative leave since July 2, although the Los Angeles County district attorney declined to file charges.

Bauer has denied all wrongdoing.

The court filing describes, in graphic detail, the two sexual encounters between Bauer and the woman, who lives in San Diego, that occurred last spring. Per company policy, Field Level Media will not publish the name of alleged victims of sexual assault.

Bauer, 31, admits to having rough sex with her, which he said was at the woman’s request, and never performed a sexual act she didn’t want. The woman, in her request for the restraining order, accused him of acts that including choking her to the point of unconsciousness and punching her to the point of needing medical attention.

The restraining order was denied.

In the lawsuit, Bauer said the woman contacted him after their first sexual encounter in an attempt to set up a second meeting for “a rougher sexual experience so she could later claim this sexual experience was not what she requested and thereby lay the groundwork for a financial settlement.”

The suit also states the woman texted a friend and told her “they would be able to travel to Europe together in style once she was successful in her plot to destroy Mr. Bauer by tricking him into having rough and rougher sex with her.”

Also named in the suit is the woman’s attorney, Fred Thiagarajah, who is being accused of defamation because of comments he made to The Washington Post. Bauer previously sued Deadspin and The Athletic in relation to the case.

Bauer’s paid leave has been extended multiple times and is due to expire Friday. MLB has been conducting its own investigation and can choose to suspend Bauer under league policies even if no criminal charges are filed.
