Inter Miami bid to continue hot streak vs. Atlanta

0

Inter Miami will try to win four games in a row for the first time in club history when they host Atlanta United on Sunday afternoon.

Inter Miami (2-4-1, 7 points) have won their last two league matches, 3-2 at home against New England and 1-0 at Seattle. They followed that up with a 1-0 midweek victory in the U.S. Open Cup over Miami FC of the USL Championship, the second tier of American club soccer.

A third-straight MLS win would also match a club record set last year in Miami’s second MLS season.

“We want to be a hard team to beat and Sunday could be a first for us,” Miami manager Phil Neville said. “So there’s a lot of challenges and aims in front of us, but keeping clean sheets is the foundation for any success.”

Leonardo Campana scored the winner against Inter’s intracity rivals, had all three goals against New England and has played 90 minutes in three consecutive games.

And although last year’s leading scorer Gonzalo Higuain has recovered from a knee injury that kept him out of the last three matchday squads, Neville said Campana is likely to get the start again.

While there have been reports of friction between Neville and Higuain, Atlanta (3-2-2, 11 points) will still wish they had their opponents’ dilemma.

Club all-time leading scorer Josef Martinez is out for several more weeks after having his right knee scoped early this month.

And while Martinez had not recovered his peak form of 2017 to 2019 this season, he was still Atlanta’s only player with multiple MLS goals this year.

Neither Dom Dwyer nor Ronaldo Cisneros scored in starts in Martinez’s vacated role over the last two league games. But Dwyer had two goals and four others also scored in a 6-0 U.S. Open Cup win over FC Chattanooga of the third-tier USL League 1 on Wednesday night.

“We just haven’t been clinical enough in the final third, so last game against Chattanooga, we really wanted to try to break that dynamic to be able to finish,” said fullback Ronald Hernandez, one of Atlanta’s scorers. “So we were able to do that.”

Wild enjoy record-setting night in win over Kraken

Kirill Kaprizov had a goal with three assists to become the first Wild player to reach 100 points, and Kevin Fiala recorded a career- and franchise-high five assists, as Minnesota set club records for single-season wins and points with a 6-3 victory over the visiting Seattle Kraken on Friday night in Saint Paul, Minn.

Joel Eriksson Ek had two goals with an assist, while Ryan Hartmann, Mats Zuccarello and Nicolas Deslauriers also scored for the playoff-bound Wild (50-21-7, 107 points), who improved to 7-0-2 in their last nine.

In his second season, Kaprizov already set the franchise’s single-season point mark, but pushed his total to 101 as Minnesota scored five times through the first 14:29 of the second period.

Meanwhile, Fiala extended his point streak to eight games (nine goals, 12 assists) while becoming the eighth NHL player to register five assists this season. Minnesota also matched a club record by extending its home point streak to 13 games (12-0-1).

Daniel Sprong and Yanni Gourde scored the game’s first two goals for Seattle (26-45-6, 58 points), which came in riding the expansion club’s first three-game winning streak. The Kraken’s Matty Beniers scored his third goal, and has a point in his first five NHL contests.

The Kraken took advantage of an early Minnesota turnover, when netminder Marc-Andre Fleury (25 saves) attempted a poor clearing pass where the puck eventually found Sprong for the easy score at 6:16 into the game. Gourde then converted off a two-on-one with 9:40 to go in the first.

Minnesota halved its deficit with 3:59 remaining in the opening period when Eriksson Ek came through on the power play. Then just 2:04 into the second period, Eriksson Ek one-timed the puck by Seattle’s Philipp Grubauer (30 saves).

The Wild took the lead, again on the power play, when Fiala found Kaprizov for a tip-in at 6:52 into the second. Kaprizov’s 100th point came when he set up Hartman for his career-high 33rd at 10:22 into the second.

Less than two minutes later, Zuccarello posted Minnesota’s third power-play goal. Deslauriers put in a rebound of his own shot with 5:31 to play in the second.

With an assist, Matt Boldy set a Wild-rookie record by extending his point streak to eight games.

Chris Paul carries Devin Booker-less Suns past Pelicans

Chris Paul scored 19 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter and also recorded 14 assists without committing a turnover to lead the Phoenix Suns to a 114-111 victory over the host New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night.

Deandre Ayton added 28 points on 13-of-20 shooting and collected 17 rebounds to help the Suns take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference first-round playoff series. Phoenix prevailed despite Devin Booker being sidelined due to a right hamstring injury.

Brandon Ingram recorded 34 points and seven rebounds and CJ McCollum had 30 points and seven assists for the Pelicans.

Game 4 is Sunday night in New Orleans.

Cameron Johnson started in place of Booker, who was injured in Game 2 and is expected to miss the rest of the series. Without the long-range bomber, Phoenix focused on the inside game as Ayton and JaVale McGee (15 points on 7-of-8 shooting) helped the Suns produce a 64-40 edge in points in the paint.

Jae Crowder scored back-to-back baskets to give the Suns a 102-95 lead with 2:08 left in the game. McCollum scored a basket for the Pelicans with 1:55 left, but Paul hit a floater and Mikal Bridges sank two free throws to make it 106-97 with 49 seconds remaining.

Ingram tallied nine points in less than 20 seconds as New Orleans trimmed its deficit to 110-106 with 22.5 seconds to play. However, Bridges made four straight free throws as Phoenix staved off the charge.

Bridges tallied 17 points and Crowder added 10 for Phoenix, which shot 50.6 percent from the field despite being a miserable 15.4 percent from 3-point range (4 of 26). The Suns committed just six turnovers while forcing New Orleans into 15 giveaways.

Devonte’ Graham and Herbert Jones added 12 points apiece for the Pelicans, who made 48.1 percent of their shots and were 11 of 32 (34.4 percent) from behind the arc.

The score was tied at 43 in the second quarter when New Orleans’ Jaxson Hayes pummeled Crowder as McCollum’s shot went through the net. The officials reviewed the play and gave Hayes a flagrant-2 foul and an ejection with 5:13 left in the half.

The Suns were energized after the incident and went on a half-closing, 16-5 burst to lead 59-48 at the break. Ayton led Phoenix with 21 first-half points.

New Orleans trailed by 13 early in the third quarter but later inched ahead at 74-73 on Ingram’s jumper with 3:33 left. Phoenix led 81-79 entering the final stanza.

Cubs place OF outfielder Clint Frazier (appendicitis) on IL

The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder Clint Frazier on the 10-day injured list after he had surgery for appendicitis.

The move was retroactive to Wednesday. The Cubs didn’t have a timeline for his return.

Frazier is in his first season with the Cubs after spending the previous five seasons with the New York Yankees. The 27-year-old is batting just .143 (3-for-21) in 10 games.

Chicago recalled infielder Alfonso Rivas from Triple-A Iowa to fill the roster opening. The 25-year-old Rivas was 7-for-13 (.538) with one home run, two doubles and four RBIs in three games at Iowa.

Rivas has played in 20 major league games with the Cubs, including two earlier this season. He is batting .333 with one homer and four RBIs in 48 career at-bats.

NYCFC look to ride momentum into clash vs. Toronto FC

0

New York City Football Club’s first few weeks as reigning MLS champions were defined by an inability to consistently put the ball in the back of the net.

At least until Valentin Castellanos scored four times last weekend.

Coming off one of their most impressive showings in team history, NYCFC seek another productive showing Sunday when they host Toronto FC at Citi Field.

NYCFC (2-3-1, 7 points) enter their second meeting against Toronto with 11 goals, with 10 coming in two games. It rolled to a 4-0 victory over FC Montreal at Yankee Stadium on March 12 and then scored once in the subsequent two matches against the Philadelphia Union and Toronto.

After two more disappointing showings from the offense, NYCFC rolled to a 6-0 victory over Real Salt Lake.

Castellanos scored his first four goals of the season in a game that occurred shortly after the defending champions were ousted from Champions League competition. Castellanos’ 19 goals led the league last season and won him the Golden Boot trophy.

“I feel happy first and foremost for the team and the guys in the locker room. And then on the personal level, just happy to be able to get on the scoresheet and get back into the race and in the running for the Golden Boot,” Castellanos said through a translator. “Obviously our focus has been Champions League. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. So now we turned our focus to the league and kind of looking forward and excited for these matches.”

Toronto FC (3-2-2, 11 points) also have scored 11 goals but have yet to score more than two in any match. Toronto FC have sandwiched three 2-1 victories around a 2-2 draw with Real Salt Lake on April 9.

The three wins were at home and Toronto is looking to keep rolling while playing five of its next eight matches on the road.

Last week, Toronto FC made the Eastern Conference race slightly tighter when they earned a 2-1 comeback win over early leader Philadelphia. Alejandro Pozuelo used some spectacular footwork to elude multiple defenders and scored the tiebreaking goal in the 51st minute.

“We’re really proud of the guys,” Toronto goalkeeper Alex Bono said. “We really grinded out another victory today. It’s early in the season, we are just trying to accumulate points, put up good performances today and let the results take care of themselves. But today was a big win for us for sure.”

Senators top Jackets for second straight shootout win

Tim Stutzle scored the lone goal in the shootout and the visiting Ottawa Senators rallied for a 2-1 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday.

Brady Tkachuk scored in regulation and Filip Gustavsson made 33 saves for the Senators (30-41-7, 67 points), who improved to 4-1-1 in their past six games. They have won consecutive games in shootouts, having topped the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 on Tuesday.

Jack Roslovic scored for the eighth time in his past six games for the Blue Jackets (35-36-7, 77 points), who have lost four straight (0-3-1). Elvis Merzlikins made 25 saves.

Roslovic gave the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 11:20 of the first period. With all of Ottawa’s penalty killers converged on the left side of the ice, Cole Sillinger sent a pass to an uncovered Roslovic in the low slot, and he connected for his 20th of the season.

The Senators came out with more jump in the second period after managing just four shots on goal in the opening frame. Tkachuk came close to tying it up when he tried a shot through his legs from the low slot. A few minutes later, the Senators had a pair of chances in front of the net followed by a point shot hitting the post.

Parker Kelly converted on a two-on-one off a feed from Dylan Gambrell following a Blue Jackets turnover at 10:02 of the second period to apparently get the Senators on the board, but Columbus challenged for offside. After video review, it was determined the play was offside and the goal was overturned.

Tkachuk finished off a tic-tac-toe play to tie it 1-1 at 7:06 of the third period. Josh Norris sent a cross-ice feed to Drake Batherson in the left circle, and Batherson quickly dished off to Tkachuk at the goal line by the right of the net.

In the shootout, Batherson shot over the net before Stutzle scored on his snap shot. The Blue Jackets’ Roslovic, Gustav Nyqvist and Jakub Voracek all had their attempts saved by Gustavsson.

Role players guide Bucks to Game 3 romp over Bulls

Grayson Allen scored 22 points off the bench and Bobby Portis added 18 points with 16 rebounds as the visiting Milwaukee Bucks rolled to a 111-81 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Friday to take a 2-1 lead in a first-round Eastern Conference playoff series.

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 18 points with nine assists and seven rebounds as Milwaukee regained the advantage in the series after the Bulls fought back from a lackluster defeat in the series opener to win Game 2 at Milwaukee.

The Bucks won without Khris Middleton, who is expected to miss the rest of the series after he sprained a left knee ligament in Game 2.

Nikola Vucevic scored 19 points and Zach LaVine added 15 as the Bulls fell short in their first home playoff game since 2017. Chicago will look to even the series in Game 4 on Sunday.

DeMar DeRozan had just 11 points for Chicago after a 41-point performance in Game 2, which was a career best in his 60th playoff game. Double-teamed often in this one, DeRozan was 4 of 9 from the field after going 16 of 31 in Game 2.

The Bulls didn’t take their second attempt from the free-throw line until 3:52 remained in the third quarter.

The Bucks led 33-17 after one quarter, going up by as many as 18 inside of a minute to go in the period. Milwaukee pushed the advantage to as many as 24 in the second quarter and led 60-41 at the break thanks to 52.3 percent shooting in the opening half.

When Portis hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the third quarter, the Bucks were up 90-59. The easy victory allowed Antetokounmpo to play just 29 minutes after playing 34 in Game 1 and 40 in Game 2.

Jrue Holiday scored 16 points and Pat Connaughton had 11 as the Bucks improved to 6-1 against the Bulls this season, including the playoffs. Milwaukee’s Luca Vildoza made a 3-pointer with 1:49 remaining, his first career points in the NBA.

LAFC aim to build momentum vs. host FC Cincinnati

0

Following a successful bounce-back performance from their first defeat, Los Angeles FC look to avoid taking a step back against an FC Cincinnati squad that hasn’t won in more than a month.

LAFC will look to begin a winning streak on Sunday when they make their first trip to Cincinnati.

The club rebounded from a 2-1 loss to the rival Los Angeles Galaxy on April 9 with a 3-1 home win over Sporting Kansas City last weekend. Cristian Arango, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi and Jose Cifuentes each scored in the victory.

“We’re happy with the victory. It was the right response from (the Galaxy loss),” LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo said.

“It’s purely playing up to our potential, as a group, but also for each individual. Because we are maximizing our potential. And, if we are not, then I will make sure they know that.

“For us, I don’t understand why we would accept anything less than playing to our limits, or on the edge of our limitations.”

LAFC (5-1-1, 16 points) enter this weekend tied for the league lead in points.

Star Carlos Vela has gone three straight MLS matches without recording any of his four goals this season. He had one with an assist in LAFC’s only meeting with Cincinnati, a 2-0 home victory from 2019.

FC Cincinnati (2-4-1, 7 points) are 0-2-1 following back-to-back wins over Orlando City SC from March 12 and 19, respectively. However, the club earned its most recent point through last weekend’s scoreless draw at Atlanta United FC.

“It’s little moments like this that have you believing, as a group, that things are going in the right direction,” FC Cincinnati coach Pat Noonan said.

That result ended Cincinnati’s run of 18 consecutive league matches without recording a clean sheet. Cincinnati’s 14 goals conceded this season are among the most in MLS.

Brandon Vazquez has scored five of Cincinnati’s eight league goals this season, with three coming in three home contests.

Canucks in desperation mode for playoffs ahead of Flames game

The Vancouver Canucks are in Hail Mary territory with their playoff hopes.

Heading into Saturday’s road clash with the Calgary Flames, the Canucks (38-29-11, 87 points) sit four points behind the Dallas Stars for the second Western Conference wild-card spot, with the 89-point Vegas Golden Knights between them.

Not only must the Canucks run the table in their final four games, starting with the Pacific Division-champion Flames (48-20-10, 106 points), but they also require all kinds of help.

“They never quit. They never die,” Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau said. “Obviously (Thursday’s loss) was very disappointing at the end, but the fact that they could have given up a long time ago — the odds were so against us — but they believed, and they still believe. They’ll believe again (Saturday). Until it shows that we’re eliminated, I’m sure these guys are going to keep pushing right to the end.”

It’s likely their fate truly was sealed by a 6-14-2 start to the season, but the Canucks pushed to the point that they had a chance after beating the Stars on Monday to give them a six-game winning streak. Vancouver boasts three 30-goal scorers for the first time since 1995-96 and Elias Pettersson scored 13 goals in the last dozen games.

However, the club has dropped consecutive games, the latest defeat Thursday’s crushing 6-3 loss to the Minnesota Wild, a game in which they held a 3-2 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the second period.

“We understand what that (loss) means,” forward Conor Garland said. “Tough to be tied against probably one of the top two, three teams in the Western Conference in the third period, and we just couldn’t find a way to get it done.”

The Flames, who are on an 8-1-1 tear, officially clinched their first division title since 2019 with Thursday’s 4-2 victory over Dallas.

It’s been a banner season in Calgary, and not only with the divisional crown. The Flames have a pair of 100-point players (Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk) for the first time since the 1990-91 campaign and four different 35-plus goal scorers for the first time since 1993-94 (Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Elias Lindholm and Andrew Mangiapane). The last team to reach that feat was the 1995-96 Pittsburgh Penguins.

“This team’s had a hell of a season when you look at it,” coach Darryl Sutter said. “There’s no way around it. Clinch (a playoff spot) with two weeks left and clinch a title with four games left — that’s a hell of a regular season.”

However, all that won’t mean much if the Flames suffer a fate as bad as 2019, when they claimed the Western Conference regular-season title but were eliminated in the first round in five games by the Colorado Avalanche.

“It is a huge accomplishment, but we still have the toughest part and that’s ultimately to win the Stanley Cup,” defenseman Rasmus Andersson said. “It’s going to be tough, it’s going to be challenging and it’s going to be fun, but we have these four games left and have to keep playing good hockey. The mindset is we have to treat these four games that they really matter and have a good feeling going into the playoffs.”

With the goal to use these clashes as preparation for a potential playoff run, don’t expect Sutter to completely put away the whip.

“You want them sharp. The worst thing is giving guys too much time off,” he said.

Trae Young’s late basket lifts Hawks over Heat

Trae Young made a go-ahead runner in the lane over Jimmy Butler with 4.4 seconds left as the host Atlanta Hawks defeated the Miami Heat 111-110 on Friday to cut their deficit in their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series to 2-1.

Atlanta overcame a 21-0, third-quarter run by Miami that gave the Heat a 16-point lead.

The eighth-seeded Hawks, who are 21-3 at home since Jan. 17, will aim to level the series against the top-seeded Heat in Game 4 on Sunday in Atlanta.

Young finished with 24 points and eight assists. He made 6 of 14 shots, including 2 of 6 from 3-point range.

Butler, who scored 45 points in Game 2 on Tuesday, finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists on Friday. However, he missed two key shots in the final 13 seconds. The first one led to Young’s runner in transition, and the second miss was the game’s final shot.

Both of Butler’s misses came off the front rim.

Tyler Herro led the Heat with 24 points, including 12 in the second quarter. Max Strus added 20 points for Miami.

Bogdan Bogdanovic was Atlanta’s second-leading scorer with 18 points. He also grabbed the rebound that led to Young’s winning hoop.

Miami starting point guard Kyle Lowry sat out the fourth quarter due to a lower left leg injury. He had six points and five assists in 23 minutes.

The Heat withstood a scare with 9:47 left in the first quarter as Butler stayed on the deck for a couple of minutes after crashing into Atlanta’s John Collins.

Butler, though, got up and did not miss any game time.

A suspicious package found outside Atlanta’s State Farm Arena delayed the start of the game by 55 minutes. The contents of the package were found to be nonexplosive.

Miami led 24-22 after the first quarter behind 11 points, five rebounds and two assists from Butler.

With 7:47 left in the second quarter, the Heat called timeout as Atlanta built its biggest lead of the series to that point, 37-31.

By halftime, Atlanta was up 61-54 as Butler was held scoreless in the second quarter.

Miami surged ahead in the third, leading 85-77 by the end of the period.

In the fourth, Atlanta tied the score 101-101 on Young’s three-point play with 3:33 left. The Hawks took their first second-half lead, 107-104, on Onyeka Okongwu’s three-point play with 1:41 left after the reserve forward grabbed a contested offensive rebound over Herro.
