Buccaneers sign ex-Falcons DT Deadrin Senat

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed free agent defensive tackle Deadrin Senat on Friday. Terms were not disclosed.

A third-round pick by Atlanta in 2018, Senat appeared in 22 games (two starts) and made 34 tackles for the Falcons from 2018-20.

Senat, 27, did not play a snap last year. Atlanta placed him on injured reserve on Aug. 9 and waived him on Nov. 8.

Senat played college football in Tampa at South Florida from 2013-17, earning second-team all-conference in 2016 and first-team honors in 2017.

Jin Young Ko, Nasa Hataoka share LA Open lead

0

South Korea’s Jin Young Ko had a string of four consecutive birdies, and Japan’s Nasa Hataoka closed her round with three straight birdies on Friday to leave the two tied for first place at the LA Open.

Ko shot a 7-under-par 64 at Wilshire Country Club, leaving her at 7-under 135, level with Hataoka, who carded a 3-under 67 on Friday.

Australia’s Hannah Green is two strokes back at 5 under after a 67 in the second round.

South Korea’s Haeji Kang (second-round 69) and Australia’s Minjee Lee (68) share fourth place at 4 under.

Lizette Salas (70), China’s Yu Liu (68), South Korea’s Inbee Park (67) and Denmark’s Emily Kristine Pedersen (72) are tied for sixth at 3 under.

First-round leader Alison Lee stumbled to a 74 and is tied for 10th at 2 under.

Eighteen players did not complete the second round before play was suspended due to darkness.

Ko, who earned her 13th career LPGA win last month in the HSBC Women’s World Championship, recorded eight birdies and one bogey on Friday. Her big move came with four birdies from No. 11 to No. 14.

“My putting was so good today,” Ko said. “I wasn’t expecting to play really well today because in the afternoon it’s always hard to play this course, but my putting was good, so I’m happy with it.”

Hataoka, a five-time tour winner, started her round on the back nine and had three bogeys and one birdie through six holes. The rest of the way, she had six birdies and one bogey.

“I feel like I have really good momentum right now, so I want to keep that going and play good the next two days,” Hataoka said.

Green enjoyed a bogey-free round, highlighted by a stretch of three birdies in five holes on the back nine.

“I’m very pleased,” Green said. “I guess today’s round kind of felt like even more under par than what it was. I was pretty solid with my putting all day today, which was nice because yesterday I had a couple three-putts. But it was nice to get done in the morning and not have to worry about coming back early tomorrow to finish a round.”

Defending champion Brooke M. Henderson of Canada will miss the cut after following up a 5-over 76 with a 1-over 72.

Veteran S Earl Thomas ‘ready’ to return to NFL

Safety Earl Thomas said Friday that he’s ready to resume his NFL career after a nearly two-year absence.

The seven-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time All-Pro made his intention clear with a simple text, per ESPN.

“I’m ready,” Thomas wrote on Friday. “I’m in shape. My timing is on point — I’m proud of that.”

Thomas, who turns 33 in May, stepped away from the NFL after being released by the Baltimore Ravens on Aug. 23, 2020. The move came two days after he was involved in an on-field altercation with fellow safety Chuck Clark.

A Texas native, Thomas met with Houston the following month but did not sign with the Texans.

Thomas recorded 713 tackles, 30 interceptions, 12 forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries in 140 career games (all starts) with the Seattle Seahawks (2010-18) and Ravens (2019). He was selected by the Seahawks with the 14th overall pick of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Tyson Fury vs. Dillian Whyte expected to break attendance record

0

When Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte square off Saturday for the WBC world heavyweight title, more than the championship will be at stake, as officials expect 94,000-plus to attend sold-out Wembley Stadium in London.

That number would make it the most attended boxing event this century, the biggest boxing audience since 1993 and the largest boxing crowd in the United Kingdom ever.

Whyte and Fury, the WBC heavyweight champion, have a shared history above and beyond hailing from the country where the fight will be staged, a fact which on its own has certainly sparked interest.

Whyte (28-2) was a sparring mate of Fury’s prior to Fury winning his first heavyweight title against Wladimir Klitschko in 2015.

“Who would have thought it?” Fury asked. “Even we didn’t think we’d be doing 90-odd thousand at Wembley.

“We ain’t done bad, have we?”

Fury (31-0-1) has stated that he will retire following the fight, perhaps another factor sparking additional interest for Saturday.

“I’m walking away,” Fury told Top Rank. “I’ve got nothing to prove to nobody, I’ve done what I’ve had to do and that’s it.”

Evil Geniuses, TSM win Stockholm berths at DPC ESL One Spring

Evil Geniuses and TSM emerged from a three-team tiebreaker Friday to earn the two Stockholm Major berths up for grabs at the Dota Pro Circuit North America: ESL One Spring event.

Quincy Crew was the odd team out after losing both its matches in the round-robin tiebreaker. It settled for a tie for first place.

The tiebreaker was necessary after Evil Geniuses, TSM and Quincy Crew all finished the six-week competition 6-1.

All of Friday’s matches were best-of-one. Evil Geniuses won the first, beating Quincy Crew in 33 minutes on green. Artour “Arteezy” Babaev of Canada led EG with 10 kills and Abed “Abed” Azel L. Yusop of the Philippines was named MVP with a 7-1-19 kills-deaths-assists ratio.

TSM then defeated Quincy Crew in 29 minutes on green to dash any remaining hope that they would win a berth to Stockholm. Enzo “Timado” Gianoli O’Connor of Peru and Jonathan Bryle “Bryle” Santos De Guia of Canada each scored 13 kills for TSM.

All that was left to decide in the final match was which team would claim the first-place prize of $30,000. EG won in 23 minutes on green. Arteezy landed another 10 kills and Abed posted a 9-1-12 K-D-A.

Dota Pro Circuit North America: ESL One Spring standings, map record:

Revs sign Colombian M Dylan Borrero to 3-year deal

0

The New England Revolution announced the signing of Colombian midfielder Dylan Borrero to a three-year contract Friday.

The Revolution acquired Borrero, 20, from Clube Atletico Mineiro of the Brazilian top flight Serie A.

The deal, which includes a one-year club option, is New England’s first under the MLS U-22 Initiative aimed at promoting investment in young players.

“Dylan Borrero is a young attacking player we have followed closely over the past year,” Revolution sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena said in a news release. “His technical ability and pace are assets which will complement our attack. We are excited to welcome him to the New England Revolution.”

Borrero arrives with 50 professional appearances across all competitions for Atletico Mineiro (2020-22) and Colombia’s Independiente Santa Fe (2019).

Borrero is New England’s second international signing this month, following the acquisition of Serbian goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic on April 6.

Christopher Bell captures pole at Talladega

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell earned his second career NASCAR Cup Series pole position with a lap of 180.92 mph around the 2.66-mile Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway on Saturday morning – just edging his teammate Martin Truex Jr., by a scant .081-second.

The all-JGR Toyota front row marks the first time the team has swept top qualifying honors (in a qualifying session) at Talladega. The teammates will lead the field to green in Sunday’s GEICO 500 (3 p.m. ET, FOX, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

“I can’t say I got anything (picking up speed) that was all my crew guys. I’m just very thankful to be in the position I am driving for Joe Gibbs Racing,” said Bell, whose best Talladega finish in four starts is fifth in last fall’s race.

“We’ve got a great team and this one is a pretty big thank you to [executive] Andy Graves at TRD (Toyota Racing Development). We ride him pretty hard, but I’ll give this engine a 10, Andy.”

Asked if he thought the wind gusts at the track ultimately made a difference in his pole-winning speed, the 27-year-old smiled and said, “it didn’t hurt.”

“Even from the first round to the second round I could tell my RPMs picked up really big going down the back straightaway then they were pretty flat going down the front straightaway, so I don’t’ know if it was an advantage to me, but definitely didn’t hurt,” said Bell, whose previous pole position came in March at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Daniel Hemric — held the top qualifying position until the final two cars in the second round (Truex and Bell) and will start third in the No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet. Daniel Suarez was fourth fastest in the No. 99 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet and reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson was fifth fastest in the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports. None of these top-five qualifiers has ever won a NASCAR Cup Series race at the track.

Toyota drivers Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin, Chevrolet’s William Byron, Toyota’s Bubba Wallace and Chevrolet’s Tyler Reddick rounded out the top-10 for Sunday’s grid.

Of note, the top qualifying Ford driver was Joey Logano, who will roll off 13th in the No. 22 Team Penske Mustang on Sunday. Defending race winner, Brad Keselowski will start his No. 6 Roush Fenway Keselowski Ford from 15th position on the grid.

Keselowski is the winningest driver in the field with six victories.

BUBBA WALLACE RETURNS TO TRACK OF FIRST CUP VICTORY

Bubba Wallace earned his first career NASCAR Cup Series victory at Talladega Superspeedway last fall, yet the driver of the No. 23 23XI Toyota said he can’t help but re-live the huge moment in his career. Often. And it is a huge motivation this week.

“To be honest with you, I sit here and think about it a lot and people put so much emphasis on the win,” said Wallace, who advanced to final round qualifying and will start ninth for Sunday’s race.

“We talk about it, talk about it, talk about it and it builds up. I just like to keep it low key under the radar. That’s how I like to roll about life. Some people may disagree, but it is special to be here. I’m excited.

“I know how good our speedway cars are and if (spotter) Freddie (Kraft) and I do what we can do at these speedway races like we’ve been doing then, I know we will have a shot to win. It’s a team effort. … As long as we stay in the race and maintain where we are at and just have a fighting chance, it will be a good day.

“That’s what I look forward to the most.”

Wallace’s only top-10 of 2022 is a runner-up finish in the season-opening DAYTONA 500 on the other “big track” on the schedule.

NASCAR CUP SERIES QUALIFYING INSPECTION

Three cars had problems in the pre-qualifying inspection for the NASCAR Cup Series. The No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota driven by Martin Truex Jr and the No. 47 JTG Daugherty Chevrolet driven by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. both failed inspection twice and will lose pit selection.

A crew member from each team was also ejected.

The No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet driven by Landon Cassill failed inspection three times and has lost pit selection, lost the chance to qualify for the race, been issued a drive-through penalty in the race and had a crew member ejected.

EARNHARDT OUT FRONT ON XFINITY SERIES GRID

Sentimental favorites will lead the field to green in Saturday afternoon’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Talladega. Jeffrey Earnhardt, grandson of the track’s all-time winningest driver, NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt, won the pole position for the Ag-Pro 300 and one of his late grandfather’s former crew chiefs, Larry McReynolds, will be calling the race from the pit box.

It’s the first time the Alabama-native McReynolds has served as crew chief after a heralded career in the role in the 1980s and ‘90s. He has worked as an analyst for FOX Sports NASCAR broadcasts and hosted shows on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

The pole-winning result for the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet is a career first for the 32-year old Earnhardt, who is running a part-time Xfinity Series schedule this year. His career best result is third place at Charlotte in 2019 driving for the Joe Gibbs Racing team.

“I tell ya, this is unbelievable man,” Earnhardt said after qualifying. “This is a dream of mine for years, to get this opportunity and everything else falling in place. The good Lord is taking care of us.”

In nine previous Talladega Xfinity Series starts, his best finish is 12th in 2015.

“I’m proud of him to get these opportunities and hope he makes the best of it today,” Jeffrey’s uncle, Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.

Jerry Kelly cards hole-in-one, takes lead at ClubCorp Classic

Jerry Kelly made a hole-in-one at the par-3 sixth hole to help himself card a 5-under 66 and grab the first-round lead at the ClubCorp Classic on Friday in Irving, Texas.

After starting on the back nine, Kelly was 2 under through 14 holes when his tee shot at the 185-yard sixth found the cup for his 15th career ace.

“I had … a little more than 180 (yards), but the wind was down a little out of the right and I was going to hit an 8 and ride it, but it would have just been too far moving it right to left,” Kelly said. “So I hit a little hold 7 up in there and it just tracked the whole way and it went in, so (I’m a) happy guy.”

Kelly added a birdie on his closing hole, the par-4 ninth. He had just one bogey, four birdies and the ace.

Woody Austin, Scott Parel and Gene Sauers are a shot behind at 4-under 67. Sauers recovered from a double bogey at No. 14 by making six birdies, which led the field.

Jeff Maggert, Lee Janzen, Rob Labritz and New Zealand’s Steven Alker are tied for fifth at 3-under 68.

While a field of 78 Champions Tour golfers are playing their usual 54-hole stroke play format, the inaugural ClubCorp Classic also features a celebrity tournament utilizing the Stableford scoring system. Tony Romo took the lead in the celebrity flight with a score of 37.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS football analyst won two previous celebrity events held by the Champions Tour, the 2018 and 2019 American Century Championship.

Retired tennis pro Mardy Fish is second place behind Romo after shooting a 34, and LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam shot a 33 for third.

Old sparring partners Tyson Fury, Dillian Whyte ready for title bout

0

The tall order that comes with defeating Tyson Fury doesn’t end with figuring out his 6-foot-9 frame and 85-inch reach.

Cracking the code to dethrone the reigning heavyweight champion also requires outclassing a fighter blessed with solid boxing skills for a man his size. And if that is solved, Fury opponents, at some point in a fight, will have to expose their chins and trade power shots.

Fury’s opponents have attempted the aforementioned strategies without success. Take your pick — out-box or out-bang — Fury conquered them all and is now considered one of boxing’s best pound-for-pound fighters.

England’s Dillian Whyte will have his chance to accomplish the unimaginable Saturday night in London. Fury (31-0-1, 22 KOs) will defend his WBC heavyweight belt against Whyte (28-2, 19 KOs) at Wembley Stadium. The bout between the British fighters has sold out with a crowd of 94,000 expected.

Fury has finally moved on from nemesis Deontay Wilder after their trilogy of entertaining bouts. The first match in 2018 ended in a draw before Fury scored consecutive knockout victories the past two years.

“We’ve done everything possible to train,” Fury said. “I haven’t left any stones unturned. I’ve trained as hard for Dillian as I did for Wilder or anybody. There’s no excuses from me. He’s fighting the best version of Tyson Fury.”

After his last win against Wilder, Fury angled for a title unification match with fellow British heavyweight Anthony Joshua. However, Joshua lost to Oleksandr Usyk in September and the dream bout projected for Wembley fell through.

Enter Whyte, a former sparring mate of Fury’s before Fury won his first heavyweight title against Wladimir Klitschko in 2015.

“It means everything to fight in my home country,” Whyte said. “This is the moment I’ve been waiting for. I’ve taken risks time and time again but I’m here. I’m ready to go. You’re not going hear any BS from me.”

Whyte landing a title shot didn’t seem likely following his fifth-round knockout loss to Alexander Povetkin in 2020. But Whyte avenged the loss with a seventh-round TKO win in a direct rematch last year.

“I lost to Povetkin and a lot of people said I’m finished,” Whyte said. “I believe in myself and I will do whatever it takes. I’m not scared to take risks. I’ve taken risks my whole life. It’s nothing new.”

Fury is the prohibitive favorite to retain his belt Saturday. In the closing days leading to fight night, the narrative has taken a different turn with Fury, 33, saying he will retire after the bout. But champions retiring at their peak rarely follow through on their words. Those who walk away often succumb to the comeback bug.

“It’s been an amazing journey from where I started all those years ago to the ups and downs and being away from boxing,” Fury said. “After those big fights with Deontay and now being back in England and now I’m fighting my old pal Dillian Whyte for all the glory and all the belts. We’re looking forward to an awesome memorable night.

“I think everybody is underestimating how good of a fight this is going to be. I see all these odds and just I laugh at them because they’re obviously coming from people who don’t know boxing. This is a heavyweight boxing fight. Anyone can win with one punch and it’s good night, Vienna.”

Royal Scion, Prince Louis turns 4 on April 23, looks adorable in pictures

0

On Saturday, Prince Louis turned 4. The second son of Prince William and Kate Middleton was born on April 23rd just two days after his great grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, who turned 96 on April 21st. His parents released four adorable pictures of the young prince, as he enjoyed himself at the beach. The pictures had been taken near their family home, in Norfolk.

William and Kate captioned a special post on Instagram which read “4 years old tomorrow!” The young prince beams into the camera as he run towards it, barefoot on the beach. He also playfully holds a cricket ball. He looks very cute and as adorable as his elder brother Prince George, who is eight and sister Princess Charlotte, who is six.

Prince Louis is full of life. He wears a grey jumper that has a band of yellow, red and blue colorful stars. He also wears a blue collared shirt and teal shorts. He looks a lot like his father, Prince William. The photos have been taken earlier, in Norfolk, where all five members of the family live.

Prince Louis was born on April 23, 2018, at St. Mary’s Hospital, in London. His mother Catherine has been taking pictures of all her children from when they have been born and shares these candid images, especially on the birthdays of her three children, as well as on other special occasions.

Prince Louis is an affectionate child. In an interview with BBC Breakfast, Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, had said that Louis was unable to understand social distancing. Although they didn’t go out much, when he went out, he wanted to “cuddle anything, particularly any babies younger than him.”

During the height of the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent quarantine, the Duchess of Cambridge spoke of how hectic it was to manage a two-year old. She also spoke of how it was great and nice to “keep in touch with everybody” but said video calling the family was challenging as it was “hectic for them to say the right thing at the right time without pressing the wrong button.”

A source, on the grounds of anonymity, has shared that while all the kids are well behaved, Prince George is most well behaved. Both Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are cheeky and get into mischief, sometimes.
