EU And US strike LNG deal, will decrease reliance on Russia for energy

0

On Friday, the U.S. said that it would work with international partners to ensure that at least an additional 15 billion cubic meters of liquified natural gas (LNG) will reach Europe by the end of the year. It will continue for the next year, as well. This will decrease the bloc’s dependency on Russia, who is the main provider of energy to the region. In recent years, Russia has exported 14 to 18 billion cubic meters of LNG.

The agreement signals that the West and its allies are determined to stop the financing of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine through profits gained by energy sales as Russian oil and gas was responsible for 43 percent of the nation’s federal budget from almost a decade.

Cutting Europe’s dependence on fossil fuels from Russia could lead the bloc towards greener and cleaner energy security as well as strike another economic blow to the country which is facing strict sanctions on several sectors. Energy is a major source of income for Moscow and gives it political leverage over the countries who depend on It for their energy needs.

U.S. President Joe Biden described the agreement between the nation and the bloc as “groundbreaking.” He acknowledged that removing Russian gas would have costs for Europe but said that it was a “win for all of us.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who spoke alongside President Biden on Friday, in Brussels, said that the trans-Atlantic partnership stood stronger and was “more united than ever.” She said that all of them were determined “to stand up against the “brutal war” that had been started by Russia against Ukraine. She also noted that the war would be “a strategic failure for Putin.”

A joint Task Force For Energy Security will be set up. It will include a joint chair with one representative from the European Commission, which is the executive branch of the EU and a representative from the White House.

President Biden in Belgium: unifying NATO, EU, G-7 against Russia for its Ukraine invasion

0

President Biden spent Thursday in Brussels with NATO allies, leaders of the EU and the Group of Seven (G-7) which consists of industrialized nations, to unitedly act against Russia for its conflict with Ukraine. The conflict is now four weeks old and there is no resolution, as yet. Biden has called for this extraordinary summit in Belgium to maintain both unity among allies as well as to punish Russia for its aggression with tough economic sanctions.

Some of the ways in which Biden has succeeded are the following:

Biden has managed to unify diverse factions in both NATO as well as EU walking a fine diplomatic line. Although the U.S. and the U.K. have banned Russian oil and gas imports, he has not expected the same from the rest of Europe as they are dependent on Russia for both oil and nation gas.

Biden has pledged to take in 100,000 refugees to the U.S. He is also provided aid to Poland and other countries who border Ukraine as they face the economic and social burden of housing and feeding millions of refugees who have crossed over. He said that an additional billion dollars will be given for humanitarian aid for Ukraine as well as for refugees who have fled to neighboring countries.

Biden has also pledged a lot of military support to Ukraine, without sending troops. The U.S. administration has sent several millions of dollars worth in army supplies and more. Although Biden has been unable to get Poland to supply weapons to Ukraine, it is in talks with both Slovakia and Turkey, to provide anti-air systems to Ukraine.

He, together with the rest of NATO allies, have resisted repeated calls by Ukrainian president Zelensky’s proposal of a no-fly zone over Ukraine. Providing such a no-fly zone would be tantamount to be directly participating in the war against Russia.

Biden has spearheaded sanctions against Russian oligarchs, government officials, politicians, banks, industries, gold sales and more, in Russia. The economic sanctions have reduced the rouble to rubble though Russia has started fighting back by asking Europe to make energy payments in roubles.

Some of the challenges ahead for President Biden is to get China aboard with the western world who has been supportive about sanctions against Putin and Russia. China has not ruled out supporting Russia, whether it would be through military support or through economic activities, while other countries have boycotted Russia. There was a bonhomie between President Xi Xinjiang and President Vladimir Putin during the Olympics in Beijing and this could dampen the West’s expectations of China joining almost the rest of the world; to condemn or punish Russia.

Queen Elizabeth II hopes to attend late husband Prince Philips memorial

0

The Queen of England, who is 95-years old, has been facing health problems in her platinum jubilee year. She has been busy with “light duties” though she had an in-person meet with Canadian President Justin Trudeau, on March 7, at Windsor Castle. She has also hosted virtual audiences with top diplomats. However, a palace spokesperson said that Queen Elizabeth hopes to attend a memorial service for her late husband, Prince Philip, next week, in person.

The Queen has recently suffered from a bout of COVID-19, although sources said that it was mild. Prince Charles had earlier suffered from a COVID infection, followed by his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. The Queen had been in contact with them. She has moved to Windsor Castle, since a while and has reportedly conducted all her royal duties from this residence, instead of the Palace.

A Buckingham Palace source said that the Queen hopes to attend a thanksgiving service next Tuesday, at the Westminster Abbey, in London. The service is in honor of her late husband Prince Philip. Although the Palace has not as yet confirmed her presence, the Queen is said to be determined to attend the service in honor of her beloved husband who was involved with 700 charitable organizations in his 99 years on planet earth.

The Palace revealed some details about the service and its attendees. Most of the royal family members including Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and other members of the royal family are expected to attend. However, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not attend the service.

Royal family members and dignitaries from several European countries such as Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Romania will also be present at the service to commemorate Prince Philips’ service to the nation.

Prince Philips’ family and friends are also expected to attend the services. Over 500 representatives from charities and other organizations that were under the late prince’s patronage will also attend the service. Government representatives as well as those from the Armed forces and devolved administrations, high commissioners and overseas territories’ representatives are also expected to be present at the Abbey. BBC One will telecast the service live from 10.30 a.m to 12.15 p.m. GMT.

Walmart sues BJ’s Wholesale for allegedly stealing self-checkout technology

0

On Tuesday, Walmart and its subsidiary Sam’s Club filed a lawsuit in federal court in Florida against BJ’s Wholesale. It claimed that the rival retailer copied a self-checkout feature. The feature is reportedly almost the same as the one featured on Sam’s Club mobile app., which is called Scan & Go.

Walmart, the world’s largest retailer has been in the forefront of technology. The big box retailer claims that it spent several years to develop this feature that lets customers ring up purchases from Sam’s Club on their smartphones. It can be used as they walk through the store. They need not stand in a checkout line.

Scan & Go is protected as the giant retailer had already applied for multiple patents for the self-checkout feature. Although it debuted in 2016, it became immensely popular during the COVID-19 pandemic as customers loved its convenience as they had to maintain social distancing. Its contactless use also gained approval from Sam’s Club customers.

The suit by the Arkansas based retailer noted that “innovations were simply taken without permission” by BJ’s when it debuted Express Pay, which was its contactless app, in late 2021. It also says that merely changing the colors and name of the feature from Scan & Go to ExpressPay indicated that the feature was an “apparent copy” of the feature developed by Walmart. The lawsuit says that BJ’s infringement on Walmart’s patent rights had caused “significant damages and irreparable harm” to Walmart.

Sam’s Club Scan & Go feature is offered as a benefit to Walmart+ subscribers. Although it did not mention the number of customers who have opted for Walmart+, the retailer said that its fourth quarter membership numbers were at a record high.

BJ’s did not respond when asked for comment by multiple outlets, although it is confirmed that it has not filed any motions, to date. Walmart also has not responded but directed outlets to its complaint. The big box retailer has asked the court to award it damages as well as to stop BJ’s from infringing on its patents.

Want to Invest Your Spare Change? Do it Automatically with Robinhood’s New Cash Card

0

Financial services company Robinhood Markets Inc. rolled out a new debit card that allows users to invest their spare change automatically. The Robinhood Cash Card, launched on Tuesday, will allow spare change investing, will be associated with a spending account separate from users’ brokerage accounts and will be valid for in-person, online, and ATM withdrawals.

The new card will take the place of Robinhood’s current Cash Management debit card, which was first announced in 2019. The card’s most notable new feature is the option for users to automatically invest in assets such as stocks and cryptocurrency when they spend money.

Robinhood will round up card transactions to the nearest dollar and use the extra money to purchase assets selected by the user. So, if you spend $10.55 on a burrito bowl with your Cash Card, Robinhood will round the payment up to $11 and apply it to your account, and use the remaining $0.45 to buy Ethereum or Dogecoin.

According to the company, which is known as a pioneer of commission-free trading, users of this feature will also receive a weekly bonus. Robinhood Money, the online brokerage’s new subsidiary, is offering the card.

Other consumer finance apps, such as Chime and Acorns Grow Inc, allow for spare change investing, which allows users to invest small amounts of money and is especially appealing to younger consumers.

Customers will also be able to receive paychecks up to two days in advance via direct deposit, a feature also provided by PayPal Holdings Ltd. The company also stated that these new features would be provided at no cost. There are no subscription fees, no account minimums, no overdraft fees, and no in-network ATM fees with this card.

The network Robinhood is using for the debit card is unknown, but its previous Cash Management card used Mastercard.

To encourage people to use this feature, Robinhood will give them an extra 10% to 100% of their weekly round-up money (up to $10 per week). Aparna Chennapragada, Robinhood’s chief product officer, has reportedly stated that the company preferred to update its debit card rather than launch a credit card due to changing spending habits, particularly among younger, Gen-Z consumers.

When will Uber add NYC Yellow Taxis on its ride hailing app?

0

In an announcement that brought cheer to New York City’s iconic Yellow Taxis, customers and more, Uber Technologies Inc. announced that it will feature these cabs in its popular app. This would help the taxi industry which has seen a slump as well as the ride hailing company, which is facing a shortage of drivers. An alliance will be formed with the taxi commission’s technology partners and Uber. The news also energized the market in New York as Uber shares rose by 5 percent after Thursday’s announcements.

The companies issued separate statements about the new alliance. The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission operates with the help of technology partners–Creative Mobile Technology and Curb Mobility. Their apps Curb and Arro are used by most of the yellow taxis in the Big Apple. The apps will let customers book trips in taxis via the Uber app.

On Thursday, the announcements also noted that the new deal will start as a pilot phase in spring and become fully functional by summer.

Guy Peterson, Uber’s director of business development said that it was a win for both drivers and riders. Drivers need not have to worry about “finding a fare” at off peak times not did they have to wait for a street hail back to Manhattan when they dropped riders to the outer boroughs of NYC. He also noted that riders would also have great benefits as they could access thousands of the iconic taxis “in the Uber app.”

Riders would get taxis at the same price offered by an UberX for the same ride. The fare could be higher or lower that the metered fare, depending on surge. Taxi drivers will be allowed to see the fares before accepting a ride. Uber drivers do not have this facility, as of now.

Although this is a first of its kind alliance in the nation, Uber has formed alliances with different taxi companies in countries all over the world including in Europe with Spain, in Turkey, in Hong Kong and other countries. There are approximately 14,000 Yellow Taxis in New York City.
