Kings out to unmask Ducks while nearing playoff spot

Jonathan Quick and John Gibson put on a goaltending clinic the last time they met.

They likely will face off again when the Los Angeles Kings play host to the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night. It will be the Kings’ regular-season home finale.

Quick made 29 saves for the Kings in a 2-1 win at Anaheim on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Quick came back with 15 saves in a 4-1 win against the visiting Chicago Blackhawks, the third straight game he limited the opposition to one goal.

“He feels real good in the net right now and we feel good with him in the net right now,” Kings coach Todd McLellan said.

The win against the Ducks on Tuesday and the Blackhawks on Thursday helped keep the Kings five points ahead of the Vegas Golden Knights for third place in the Pacific Division.

A win against the Ducks would move the Kings one win away from clinching a playoff spot, after missing the postseason each of the last three seasons.

“We should be getting excited about the opportunity and the best thing that we have is control,” McLellan said.

Gibson made 26 saves against the Kings this week, but took the loss for the 14th time in his past 15 starts (1-11-3).

Gibson, who started for the Pacific Division in the NHL All-Star Game in February, has been sharper in recent games, setting a franchise record with 52 saves in a 3-2 overtime loss at the Florida Panthers on April 12.

He earned his first win since March 1 in a 6-4 victory against the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday, and then came back with the strong performance against the Kings.

Gibson is 14-9-0 in 24 appearances against the Kings with a 2.34 goals-against average and .919 save percentage.

Quick is 26-13-9 in 50 career appearances against the Ducks with a 2.37 goals-against average and .912 save percentage.

Regardless of the playoff implications on Saturday night, the goaltending matchup figures to be one to watch again.

“When I think of the Kings-Ducks rivalry, I think of Gibson and Quick,” Ducks coach Dallas Eakins said “I thought they were both going at it (on Tuesday). It was very reminiscent of battles of the past. I thought Quick was very good and Gibby was right there matching him.”

Quick, 36, won his 20th game of the season against the Ducks, the ninth time he has reached that milestone in his NHL career.

Gibson, 28, needs two more wins to reach the 20-win mark for the sixth time in his career.

In order for the Ducks to help Gibson get there, they’ll need to stay sharp on their power play.

Anaheim scored its only goal on Tuesday with the man-advantage, and pressured Quick heavily on the other three power plays.

The Ducks are 13th in the NHL on the power play

“Our power play was back to where we were earlier in the year,” Eakins said. “We had multiple, multiple chances (against the Kings). We were highly dangerous.”

Shoulder discomfort lands Dodgers RHP Blake Treinen on IL

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed right-hander Blake Treinen on the injured list Friday with right shoulder discomfort and recalled left-hander Garrett Cleavinger from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Treinen has made three appearances this season but has not pitched since April 14 as the Dodgers tried to get his shoulder up to speed again without using an IL stint. He 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA and has five strikeouts in three innings.

In nine career seasons, the 33-year-old is 36-31 in 447 appearances with a 2.87 ERA and effectively has been the Dodgers’ set-up man since joining the club in 2020.

Cleavinger, who turns 28 on Saturday, made one appearance for Los Angeles earlier this season before he was optioned. He has just 24 major league appearances with the Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies over the past three seasons, going 2-4 with a 3.72 ERA.

Reports: Sixers’ Joel Embiid to play through thumb injury

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid plans to play through a suspected torn ligament in his right thumb, multiple outlets reported Friday.

Embiid was injured during Wednesday’s 104-101 overtime win in Game 3 over the Toronto Raptors. The five-time All-Star was wearing a brace on his right hand and thumb during Friday’s practice.

The club didn’t list Embiid on its Friday injury report and coach Doc Rivers wasn’t concerned. Rivers told reporters that Embiid was a full practice participant on Friday.

“We did a lot of stuff,” Rivers told reporters after being asked about Embiid’s brace. “We just don’t want anybody to hit his arm and all that so he was fine.”

Still, the team reportedly may opt to have Embiid undergo an MRI exam at some point. The MVP finalist didn’t speak to the media following Friday’s practice but said after Wednesday’s game that there was no chance he’s sit out Saturday.

“I don’t know exactly what happened,” Embiid said on the injury. “But I just started feeling pain and think I might have twisted it.”

Embiid knocked down the winning 3-pointer with less than a second left in overtime on Wednesday. He had 33 points and 13 rebounds.

Over the first three games of the series, Embiid is averaging 27.7 points and 13.0 rebounds.

The 76ers look to finish off a sweep of the first-round series on Saturday.

After coaching change, D.C. United press on vs. Revolution

0

Chad Ashton will be back behind the D.C. United bench as interim coach Saturday night as they play host to the New England Revolution in Washington, D.C.

D.C. let coach Hernan Losada go Wednesday amidst a four-game losing streak in the league. Losada spent 41 games behind the bench in D.C. with a 17-19-5 record. United currently sits in 14th (last place) in the Eastern Conference.

Ashton, who was an assistant under Losada, has previous experience as interim coach for D.C. United (2-4-0, 6 points) after replacing former coach Ben Olsen for the final seven matches of the 2020 MLS season. D.C. went 3-3-1 during his stint.

“Chad, I think, has a great relationship with everybody and has developed that as an assistant coach,” defender Julian Gressel said. “I think he wants to continue that as a head coach. That’s what he’s expressed to us.”

Gressel was asked about if the joy of playing soccer had suffered under the dismissed coach.

“Maybe, yeah,” Gressel said. “I’ve talked about this, how life wasn’t easy at times and it was very demanding. Bringing that joy back and maybe loosening some of those restrictions will kind of get guys to really enjoy coming to training more and more.”

D.C. United lost to Austin FC 3-2 at Audi Field last Saturday after Ola Kamara gave the hosts a 2-0 lead before getting his second yellow card in first-half injury time. Austin scored three goals in the game’s final 10 minutes plus injury time.

New England (2-4-1, 7 points) snapped a four-game losing streak of its own with a 2-1 home victory over Charlotte FC. Adam Buksa and Matt Polster scored for the Revs.

Head coach Bruce Arena was happy to get the win but is determined to not let it go to his players’ heads.

“I’m happy it was tonight rather than a month down the road,” Arena said after the win. “You know, winning is important for teams … But I do know that there are a lot more games ahead, so you can’t be getting too high or too low at this point.”

The Revolution have struggled on the road this campaign, posting an 0-2-1 record so far, while D.C. United have gone just 1-3-0 at home.

Carles Gil could be key for New England. Gil has contributed to three of the Revs’ five away goals this season (two goals, one assist).

Start time of Pirates-Cubs game pushed back due to weather

The start time of Friday’s game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and host Chicago Cubs has been shifted to 8:05 p.m. ET due to forecasted inclement weather throughout the morning and into the afternoon.

The Cubs sustained their third straight loss after dropping a 4-3 decision on Thursday in the opener of the four-game series. The victory snapped a three-game skid for the Pirates.

Chicago left-hander Drew Smyly (1-0, 0.00 ERA) is expected to take the mound on Friday against former Cubs southpaw Jose Quintana (0-1, 3.86) of the Pirates.

Panthers out for lucky 13 vs. Maple Leafs

The Florida Panthers will take aim at a franchise-record 13th consecutive victory Saturday night when they meet the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Panthers defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 on Thursday to extend their winning streak and match the franchise record of 12 straight set from Dec. 15, 2015 to Jan. 10, 2016.

Coupled with the Maple Leafs’ 8-1 road loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, the Panthers have clinched the Eastern Conference’s top seed and have a chance to beat out the Colorado Avalanche for top spot in the league overall.

“Proud of the group,” Panthers interim coach Andrew Brunette said. “It’s been a heck of a year. To (finish with the top record) would be a big bonus. It’s probably not over yet, but, again, with all these little things we just want to keep going, keep building. We’ve got another game Saturday.”

The Panthers (56-15-6, 118 points) and the Maple Leafs (51-21-6, 108 points) have split two games this season. Florida overcame a 5-1 deficit at home to defeat Toronto 7-6 in overtime on April 5. It was win No. 5 in the 12-game streak.

“You don’t have too many times in your career, or in your life, that you can be on a team like this,” Brunette said. “We’re a long, long way to getting to be where we want to be, but (the players) love playing with each other, and they love to compete together. Those are all fun signs.”

Jonathan Huberdeau had two assists Thursday and has 113 points as he contends for the NHL scoring lead with Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers. They were tied for the lead heading into play Friday.

The Maple Leafs will be out to atone for the embarrassing loss to the Lightning on Thursday in what was a possible preview of a first-round playoff series.

“You just get a little sample of how hard you need to play and how well you need to play to be able to beat a team of that quality when they are playing at that level,” Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said.

In their previous visit to Tampa Bay on April 4, the Maple Leafs won 6-2 with Auston Matthews scoring three goals. Matthews (undisclosed injury) has missed the past three games.

“The way I see it is, the last time we were in here you know how the game went and you saw how their team responded,” Keefe said. “To me it was clear that the game meant more to them than it did to us, and it showed in how they played and how they competed. That’s what happens when that’s the case.”

As the game got away from the Maple Leafs on Thursday, the game became chippy with several skirmishes.

As a result, two Toronto players were fined. Kyle Clifford was fined $2,500 for high-sticking Tampa Bay’s Corey Perry and Wayne Simmonds was fined $2,250 for charging Mikhail Sergachev. The fines were the highest allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.

Toronto’s Erik Kallgren allowed eight goals on 36 shots Thursday. Jack Campbell will make his scheduled start in goal for the Maple Leafs on Saturday.

“We’re disappointed in the way we played,” the Maple Leafs’ John Tavares said. “Just not helping out our goaltender, especially. Second, it’s a good lesson for us going forward to understand the way we need to play, obviously against a team like this.

“They don’t need a whole lot and the game can change really quickly there in the second period after a pretty good first for us.”

Luka Doncic completes full practice with Mavericks, return imminent

Luka Doncic was a full participant in the Dallas Mavericks’ practice on Friday and could make his debut in the series against Utah on Saturday.

Doncic (calf) was involved in the workout start to finish, including full-court 5-on-5 scrimmage, his first practice without limitations in two weeks.

Barring any setback or lingering soreness in his strained calf, Doncic plans to play with the Mavericks looking to push their series advantage to 3-1 over the Jazz.

“After practice we’ll know if I play or not. I feel good,” Doncic said Friday, adding that he has no pain in his calf.

Doncic, 23, sustained the left calf injury in the third quarter of the Mavericks’ 130-120 win against the San Antonio Spurs in the April 10 regular-season finale.

Head coach Jason Kidd originally projected 7-10 days for Doncic to heal, but said this week the team remains cautious in its approach.

His patience might be assisted by the Mavericks winning two games in a row after dropping the opener in the series.

Doncic averaged 28.4 points, 9.1 rebounds and 8.7 assists in 65 starts this season, finishing third in the league in scoring and fifth in assists.

With Doncic sidelined, Jalen Brunson has averaged 32 points over the first three games of the series.

Phillies reinstate OF Odubel Herrera (oblique) from IL

The Philadelphia Phillies reinstated Odubel Herrera from the injured list and optioned fellow outfielder Simon Muzziotti to Double-A Reading on Friday.

Herrera, 30, began the season on the 10-day IL with an oblique injury. He batted .281 with three RBIs in eight games on rehab assignments with Class-A Clearwater and Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Herrera hit .260 with 13 homers and 51 RBIs in 124 games last season.

An All-Star in 2016, he is a .274/.329/.422 hitter with 73 home runs, 284 RBIs and 62 stolen bases in 755 career games with the Phillies since 2015.

Muzziotti, 23, made his MLB debut on April 11 and batted .143 (1 for 7) in nine appearances this season.

Reports: Rapids acquire F Gyasi Zardes from Crew

0

The Colorado Rapids acquired U.S. men’s national team forward Gyasi Zardes from the Columbus Crew on Friday.

The Crew received $300,000 in general allocation money in the deal. They are eligible to receive up to $1.1 million more in the deal if Zardes meets performance incentives and re-signs with Colorado for three years beyond 2022.

Zardes, who occupied a designated-player slot with the Crew, started just one of Columbus’ seven games this season, scoring one goal. The Crew have given more playing time to second-year striker Miguel Berry, who also has one goal this season in seven games (six starts).

Zardes, 30, started as a homegrown player with the Los Angeles Galaxy and turned his production into 67 appearances with the U.S. men’s national team. He has scored 14 goals for his country.

The Hawthorne, Calif., native has 88 career MLS goals and 23 assists in 241 games (216 starts) over 10 seasons. In five seasons with the Crew, he scored 54 goals with six assists in 110 games (100 starts).

“Gyasi is an elite level attacker with a strong history of production and a successful track record both in MLS and with the U.S. Men’s National Team,” Rapids general manager Padraig Smith said in a news release. “His character, mentality, experience and goal-scoring prowess will greatly benefit our team. We’re thrilled to bolster our offense with his signing and look forward to welcoming him to Colorado.”

It’s unclear whether Zardes will be available for the Rapids in their home game Saturday against Charlotte FC.

The Rapids were the top team in the Western Conference last season, going 17-7-10 (61 points). They are off to a disappointing 2-3-2 (8 points) start this season. After winning the MLS Cup title in 2020, the Crew are just 2-3-2 (8 points) this season.

“We want to thank Gyasi personally as he has been an important member of the Crew and the Columbus community since joining in 2018,” Crew president and GM Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. “We know Gyasi quickly became a fan favorite given all of his contributions both on the field and throughout Central Ohio and we did not take this decision lightly.”

Predators, Lightning meet with work left to do

The Nashville Predators and Tampa Bay Lightning have plenty at stake when they conclude their season series Saturday night in Florida.

In the teams’ second matchup this season, playoff security and positioning are at the forefront in the interconference contest.

On Feb. 26 in the first ever NHL Stadium Series matchup to take place at Nashville, Tenn., the Lightning turned to captain Steven Stamkos, who had three points as Tampa Bay prevailed 3-2 at the home stadium of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.

The final meeting Saturday night will not force the teams to consider outdoor conditions, but will have more significance attached.

The Lightning (47-22-8, 102 points) have locked down a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs and are looking to three-peat as league champions.

However, a rough go of it in March, when coach Jon Cooper’s squad went 8-7-0, has slotted the Lightning into third place in the Atlantic Division, behind leader Florida and second-place Toronto.

With five regular-season games remaining, the Lightning are just three points ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins, who have been jockeying for third in their respective divisions. At least one of those three clubs will occupy a wild-card spot and face a division winner when the postseason begins.

The Lightning did their best Thursday night to maintain third place over Atlantic Division foe Boston, which was blanked 4-0 by the Penguins.

Following a scoreless first period Thursday, Tampa Bay poured it on against the Toronto Maple Leafs, scoring four goals in each of the remaining frames for an 8-1 victory. It brought the Lightning within six points of second-place Toronto.

The Lightning received three-point showings from Alex Killorn (two goals), Ross Colton (two goals), Stamkos (one goal) and Ondrej Palat (one goal), plus a 36-save performance from Andrei Vasilevskiy (36-18-5).

Stamkos’ four straight multipoint games helped him set the franchise record for career points with 956, eclipsing Martin St. Louis’ mark of 953. The captain now has 473 goals and 483 assists over 14 seasons with Tampa Bay.

“It’s crazy the production he’s had,” said Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman. “He has been phenomenal (and) the games that he’s missed and he’s still only (32)-years-old and has that record already. Says a lot about his determination, his skill level.”

Nashville (44-28-5, 93 points) holds the Western Conference’s top wild-card spot, but that advantage is only two points over the No. 2 wild-card Dallas Stars and four over the Vegas Golden Knights, the first club outside of a playoff position.

Already with a game in hand over those two teams, the Predators could pad their advantage with a victory at Tampa.

Nashville, which is 3-3-1 over the past seven games, won its last time on the ice, earning a 3-2 shootout home win over the Pacific-leading Calgary Flames on Tuesday, while securing the extra point for the two-point edge over the Stars.

Mikael Granlund notched the only shootout marker, and goalie Juuse Saros improved his record to 38-24-3 in the victory.

“I think when you come down the stretch like this, you’ve got to play meaningful hockey,” said Predators coach John Hynes. “It’s what this time of year is about.”

Matt Duchene skated in his 900th career game and scored his 40th goal to become the first 40-goal scorer in Nashville history.
