Ex-Georgia LB Adam Anderson indicted on rape charge

A grand jury indicted former Georgia linebacker Adam Anderson on Tuesday and charged him with rape.

Anderson will be arraigned June 13. His lawyer said in a statement given to ESPN that he plans to plead not guilty.

The senior from Rome, Ga., was arrested on Nov. 10 and released on bond a week later after being accused of raping a 21-year-old woman in a house in Athens, Ga., on Oct. 29.

According to the police report, a 21-year-old woman went to a house in the early morning hours of Oct. 29, had some drinks and later awoke to find Anderson raping her. She reported the alleged incident to police later that day, the same day Anderson and the Bulldogs left Athens to head to Jacksonville, Fla., where they played Florida on Oct. 30.

Anderson played against the Gators, but the team suspended him the following week once the allegations came to light.

ESPN reported that a second woman also accused Anderson of sexual assault in October 2020, but he hasn’t been charged in that case.

Prior to the allegation, Anderson was viewed as a potential first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by ESPN and CBS Sports.

Astros DFA right-hander Pedro Baez

The Houston Astros designated right-hander Pedro Baez for assignment Tuesday, midway through a two-year, $12.5 million deal he signed in January 2021.

In fact, Baez pitched just 6 2/3 innings on the new contract and will earn $7.5 million — $5.5 million for 2022 and a $2 million buyout for 2023.

In a corresponding move, the Astros recalled RHP Seth Martinez from Triple-A Sugar Land.

Baez, 34, was 0-0 with an 11.57 ERA in three appearances this season. He missed the majority of the 2021 season, pitching 4 1/3 innings in four appearances and sporting a 2.08 ERA.

Baez spent his first seven seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is 21-15 with a 3.08 ERA in 362 career appearances.

Martinez, 27, made his major league debut last September with the Astros. He appeared in three games without recording a decision with an ERA of 15.00.

Red Wings place D Marc Staal in COVID-19 protocol

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Marc Staal was placed in the COVID-19 protocol on Tuesday.

The move came hours before Detroit’s road game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Staal, 35, will also miss Friday’s season finale against the host New Jersey Devils.

Staal was recently nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which goes to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to ice hockey.

Staal has 16 points (three goals, 13 assists) in 71 games this season. Overall, he has 49 goals and 165 assists (214 points) in 1,019 games with the New York Rangers (2007-20) and Red Wings (2020-22).

Pelicans well-backed Game 5 underdogs at Suns

After securing the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, the Phoenix Suns are headed home in an unexpected situation with the No. 8 seed New Orleans Pelicans in their first-round playoff series: tied 2-2 entering Game 5.

The best-of-seven series has turned into a best-of-three series starting Tuesday night in Phoenix. The Pelicans tied the series with a 118-103 home victory against the Suns on Sunday night.

“We know Game 5 is going to be a dogfight and we’ve got to be ready to play,” guard CJ McCollum said after scoring 18 points and pulling down nine rebounds for New Orleans. “This is a championship-caliber team who’s been there before, but on the bright side, we understand what to expect. This is a great opportunity for us to learn, to grow and to play in a hostile environment.”

The Pelicans are 6.5-point underdogs entering that hostile environment. However, they had been backed by 58 percent of the spread bets and 76 percent of the handle at BetMGM as of Tuesday afternoon and 59 and 89 percent, respectively, at DraftKings.

Brandon Ingram scored 16 of his 30 points in the pivotal third quarter and became the first Pelicans player to score 30 points in three consecutive playoff games.

“Brandon is playing some of his best basketball of the season, and he’s doing it on the biggest stage, and it’s great to see,” New Orleans coach Willie Green said. “I’m just trying to move out of the way and let him do his thing.”

Center Jonas Valanciunas bounced back from a poor performance in Game 3 to add a career playoff-high 26 points and 15 rebounds.

“It’s fun to play this way, when everyone’s touching the ball, moving, and finding the teammates open, setting loose screens,” Valanciunas said. “That’s such a good feeling to play this way — on top of winning the game.”

New Orleans held star guard Chris Paul to four points on 2-of-8 shooting. He had 11 assists, but didn’t attempt a free throw.

“We just tried to throw different looks at him, be aggressive, try denying him the ball at times,” Green said. “(It was) having more of a mindset and a focus on not allowing Chris in the fourth quarter to dominate the game, which he’s done and is capable of doing.”

Paul was without his backcourt mate, All-Star Devin Booker, who strained his right hamstring in Game 2 and averaged 26.8 points per game on the regular season. He is not expected to return this series.

“We can’t worry about whether Book comes back,” Phoenix coach Monty Williams said. “Obviously, we need Book back, but that’s not why we lost the game. They played much harder than we did.”

Williams also noted the difference in free throws attempted in what was a very physical game. The Pelicans shot 42 free throws (making 32) and the Suns shot 15 (making 10).

“They outplayed us; they deserve to win,” Williams said. “(But) that’s a free throw disparity that you have to look at.”

New Orleans outrebounded Phoenix for the fourth straight game, 48-39. They are averaging 47.8 rebounds per game in the postseason.

“They were the aggressor tonight,” Paul said. “They came out and made all of the big plays. They outrebounded us again.”

The third quarter was again significant for the Pelicans, who outscored the Suns 35-23 behind Ingram. New Orleans has outscored Phoenix by at least nine points in each third quarter for a cumulative advantage of 137-93 in the third quarters.

“They for sure played with more urgency and grit than we did,” Williams said. “The third quarter, for whatever reason, we haven’t been able to be productive in that quarter, whether it’s missing shots or not getting stops, but it’s been a trend in this series.”

Game 5 in Phoenix has the lowest Over/Under point total of the three playoff games Tuesday night.

The market opened at 216.5 points at BetMGM before shifting to 215.5 with 72 percent of the bets and 78 percent of the handle supporting the Over. The same 216.5-point total at DraftKings had seen 74 and 68 percent of the action support the Over.

Reds activate Jonathan India (hamstring) off 10-day IL

The Cincinnati Reds activated second baseman Jonathan India from the 10-day injured list prior to Tuesday night’s home game against the San Diego Padres.

India has been sidelined since sustaining a right hamstring strain against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 14.

India was the National League Rookie of the Year in 2021 when he batted .269 with 21 homers, 34 doubles and 69 RBIs in 150 games.

The 25-year-old was batting .241 with two RBIs in seven games this season prior to the injury.

Cincinnati also designated utility man JT Riddle for assignment, optioned infielder Alejo Lopez to Triple-A Louisville and added infielder Matt Reynolds to the active roster. Reynolds, 31, was claimed off waivers from the New York Mets on Sunday.

Riddle, 30, was 1-for-4 in two games for the Reds this season. He has a .223 career average with 19 homers and 80 RBIs in 252 games with four teams over the past six seasons.

Lopez, who turns 26 on May 5, was 5-for-19 in seven games for the Reds this season and has a .262 average in 21 overall games with the club. He batted .161 (5-for-31) with three RBIs in nine games for Louisville earlier this season.

Reynolds played in one game for New York this season and has a .212 average with four homers and 19 RBIs in 131 career games with the Mets, Washington Nationals and Kansas City Royals over five seasons. Reynolds was 2-for-17 (.118) with one homer and three RBIs in eight games for Triple-A Syracuse earlier this season.

The Reds (3-13) own the worst record in the majors. Cincinnati halted an 11-game slide Sunday with a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Senators’ Matt Murray (upper body) to sit out rest of season

Goaltender Matt Murray will miss the Ottawa Senators’ final three games of the season because of an upper-body injury.

Murray, who has not played since March 5, sported a 5-12-2 record with a 3.05 goals-against average, .906 save percentage and one shutout in 20 games this season.

“We thought maybe he could get in at the end and it’s just not going to happen,” Senators coach D.J. Smith said Tuesday. “The big thing for (Murray) was him coming back up, getting his confidence back and getting going, and then it gets derailed with another injury. I think the key was getting him building confidence toward next year, but unfortunately, he’s not going to be able to play. Now it’s training in the summer and exhibitions, and it’s not the same. But it is what it is.”

Murray, 27, owns a 132-78-22 record with 14 shutouts, a 2.77 GAA and a .911 save percentage in 246 career appearances (238 starts) with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Senators. He was a two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Penguins.

Grizzlies home favorites in critical Game 5 vs. Wolves

All even in their first-round Western Conference playoff series, the Memphis Grizzlies and Minnesota Timberwolves head back to Memphis for a pivotal Game 5 on Tuesday.

After squandering leads of 26 points in the second quarter and 25 in the third quarter of a 104-95 Game 3 loss, Minnesota rallied to knot the series 2-2 with its 119-118 win on Saturday.

The Grizzlies are favored at home but the action has been split.

The line moved from 7.5 to 6.5 points at BetMGM, where Memphis has been backed by 61 percent of the spread bets but Minnesota has drawn 52 percent of the handle. A 6.0-point underdog at DraftKings, Minnesota has been backed by 85 percent of the handle at the sportsbook.

Karl-Anthony Towns proved instrumental in Minnesota’s turnaround. He recorded a team-high 33 points, including the victory-sealing free throws in the closing seconds, and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

Towns’ own reversal of fortunes mirrored Minnesota’s rebound. Towns scored just 15 and eight points in the team’s Game 2 and 3 losses, respectively.

Reserve Jordan McLaughlin’s role in Game 4 was also central to tying the series. McLaughlin shot 4 of 4 from 3-point range and scored 16 points in 14 minutes of Saturday’s win after not playing in Game 3.

“Sometimes, you do stupid things,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said postgame Saturday when asked about not playing McLaughlin in Game 3.

“Every day he steps on the court he makes an impact. It’s normal, it’s routine,” Towns said of McLaughlin. “We need someone like him, someone who comes off the bench and dominates the game.”

Big contributions off the bench have been evident the past two games and figure to be vital to the eventual winner of the series. Memphis boasted a 41-22 edge in bench points in Game 3, thanks in part to Brandon Clarke’s 20.

Perhaps more significant is the scoring efficiency of Ja Morant, the Grizzlies’ regular-season leader at 27.4 points per game. Since posting 32 points in a Game 1 loss, Morant has scored less than his season average in each of the following contests and finished with just 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting Saturday.

Desmond Bane picked up the scoring load for the Grizzlies with a game-high 34 points, and Morant continued to play a part in the offense with 15 assists, marking the third consecutive game dishing at least 10.

Still, Morant’s ability to put up points for the remainder of the series could prove critical. The All-Star said following Saturday’s loss he is dealing with lingering soreness from a knee injury that sidelined him for 12 games at the end of the regular season.

Morant also expressed frustration with his inability to get to the free-throw line in Game 4. He shot a series-low three foul shots in the loss.

“Most of the times when I go to the rack, I’m getting bumps,” he said. “I just got to worry about finishing the bucket instead of worrying about the guys with stripes on.”

Memphis shot 19 of 25 from the foul line Saturday, while Minnesota finished 31 of 40. Towns’ 14 of 17 from the free-throw line set the pace.

Finch credited Towns for “forcing (the officials) to blow the whistle, get to the free-throw line. Things that he hadn’t been doing the last couple games.”

Through the series’ first three games, Towns went to the foul line for a combined 15 attempts, including just two in Game 3.

Game 5 in Memphis has easily the highest Over/Under among Tuesday’s trio of playoff games. It is at 215.5 at both BetMGM and DraftKings. The Under has been supported by 89 percent of the handle at the former and 83 percent at the latter.

Report: ‘Yankee Letter’ reveals use of replay room to decode signs

The New York Yankees were fined $100,000 for using their video replay room to decode signs and passing them on to runners at second base in 2016 and 2017, the infamous “Yankee Letter” obtained by SNY revealed Tuesday.

The letter from MLB commissioner Rob Manfred to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman dated Sept. 14, 2017, which the Yankees fought the release of, revealed the Yankees’ sins didn’t come close to those of the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal that roiled Major League Baseball.

In fact, the Yankees were doing what many other teams were thought to be doing at the time.

The Yankees used the system in 2015 and 2016 but apparently ceased the illegal operation in 2017 and, more importantly, did not do it after Manfred banned electronic sign stealing in September 2017, per SNY.

“The Yankees’ use of the dugout phone to relay information about an opposing Club’s signs during the 2015 season, and part of the 2016 season, constitutes a material violation of the Replay Review Regulations,” Manfred wrote to Cashman. “By using the phone in the video review room to instantaneously transmit information regarding signs to the dugout in violation of the Regulations, the Yankees were able to provide real-time information to their players regarding an opposing Club’s sign sequence — the same objective of the Red Sox’s scheme that was the subject of the Yankees’ complaint.”

The letter also cleared the Yankees of using YES Network cameras to steal signs, something the Boston Red Sox alleged.

“My office has thoroughly investigated the Red Sox’s claims in this regard and has concluded they are without merit,” Manfred wrote.

The Red Sox were fined an undisclosed amount for real-time electronic sign-stealing using Apple Watches. The Red Sox relayed sign sequences to runners on second base. The Astros did it in real time without the use of runners on second, banging on garbage cans to relay pitches to batters in real time.

The fines assessed to both the Yankees and Red Sox went to Hurricane Irma relief as a part of Major League Baseball Charities.

The letter will be released later by MLB later this week, according to SNY.

Lions pick up TE T.J. Hockenson’s fifth-year option

The Detroit Lions exercised the fifth-year option on tight end T.J. Hockenson’s rookie contract Tuesday.

The move guarantees Hockenson will earn $9.4 million in 2023.

Hockenson, the eighth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, has played in 40 games (35 starts) over his first three seasons in Detroit. He has 160 career receptions for 1,673 yards and 12 touchdowns.

His best year so far was 2020, when he started all 16 games, caught 67 passes for 723 yards and six touchdowns and was named to his first Pro Bowl.

Hockenson’s 2021 campaign was cut short in December when he required thumb surgery. He finished the season with 61 catches, 583 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games (all starts).

Capitals star Alex Ovechkin game-time decision vs. Islanders

Washington Capitals superstar captain Alex Ovechkin will be a game-time decision against the visiting New York Islanders on Tuesday.

Ovechkin didn’t participate in Tuesday’s morning skate and remains day-to-day after sustaining an upper-body injury that forced him out in the third period of Sunday’s 4-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Capitals have clinched a playoff spot, but they are fighting for a better seed.

The Capitals (44-23-12, 100 points) are one point behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for third place in the Metropolitan Division. In the wild-card race, they are three points behind the Boston Bruins for the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Washington has three games remaining: a home-and-away series with the Islanders on Tuesday and Thursday and the finale on Friday at the New York Rangers.

The injury occurred on a breakaway two minutes into the third period against the Maple Leafs. Ovechkin lost his footing after tripping over Toronto goalie Erik Kallgren’s stick. Ovechkin went shoulder-first into the boards and left the game.

Ovechkin, who has 50 goals this season, has missed two games in 2021-22, both due to COVID-19 in February.

The 36-year-old is currently 21 goals behind Gordie Howe (801) for second all-time. Wayne Gretzky (894) is the all-time leader.
