Hurricanes look to write next chapter against Bruins

The Carolina Hurricanes have many reasons for optimism ahead of Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round series against the visiting Boston Bruins on Monday in Raleigh, N.C.

After all, the Metropolitan Division champion Hurricanes outscored the Bruins by a 16-1 margin to sweep their three-game season series.

Carolina also won its final six games to set franchise records in victories (54) and points (116) for a single season.

While all of that is positive, coach Rod Brind’Amour doesn’t have to think too hard about a fairly recent negative. All he has to do is recall watching his team’s offense go limp last spring in an ill-fated second-round series loss to eventual champion Tampa Bay.

“You learn from your past. These guys that have been here before, that’s what’s driving them and has all year,” Brind’Amour said. “Does it translate into the way we play in the playoffs? I don’t know, but it’s the fuel that’s certainly there. Does it make the difference? We’ll find out.”

Andrei Svechnikov (three goals, three assists) and Teuvo Teravainen (one goal, five assists) each recorded six points in the season series versus Boston. Sebastian Aho had two goals and two assists in the set to boost his club-best totals in both categories (37, 44).

The offense was more than enough for Frederik Andersen, who turned aside 98 of 99 shots to win all three meetings in the series.

Andersen, a winner of 35 games this season, hasn’t played since exiting a contest against Colorado on April 16 with an undisclosed injury. Antti Raanta is in line to start the series opener, with rookie Pyotr Kochetkov waiting in the wings.

“We’re focused on what we can control,” Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell said. “Rod has said Freddie is doing everything that we’ve asked him to do and more. He’s working out daily.

“… But we’re very confident in the other guys who are here that they can provide us what we need. We’ll just see how things roll.”

The Bruins were rolling along with six wins in a seven-game stretch to put them in line for a chance to secure the third seed in the Atlantic Division. Tampa Bay, however, won its season finale to send Boston into the top wild-card spot.

Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron scored his team’s lone goal in the season series versus the Hurricanes. He enters this set having erupted for nine points (five goals, four assists) in his past three games played.

Bergeron, however, joined Brad Marchand (team-leading 48 assists, 80 points), David Pastrnak (club-best 40 goals), Taylor Hall and defensemen Charlie McAvoy among others in sitting out the finale.

Boston coach Bruce Cassidy said he expects his team to be “100 percent healthy” for the start of the series. He also is keeping an open mind when reflecting on the Bruins’ troubles against the Hurricanes this season.

“Obviously, they had their way with us this year,” Cassidy said. “Some of that was a while ago, and I think our team’s in a much better place than when we played them earlier in the year. So we’re not going to take too much stock in that.”

The best-of-seven series will continue Wednesday with Game 2 in Raleigh.

Report: S Damontae Kazee to sign with Steelers

Free-agent safety Damontae Kazee is signing a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, ESPN reported.

Kazee, 28, recorded 52 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles in 17 games (15 starts) last season with the Dallas Cowboys.

He spent his first four NFL seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. He had seven of his 12 career interceptions in 2018 and has played in 69 career games (49 starts) since being selected by the Falcons in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Kazee was a college standout at San Diego State and had a school-record 17 interceptions for the Aztecs. He was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year in each of his final two seasons (2015, 2016).

Mavericks-Suns series rests on health of young stars

Two teams hoping their top scorers can stay healthy will tip off their best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series when the Dallas Mavericks visit the Phoenix Suns for Game 1 on Monday night.

Both teams overcame the absence of their young superstars in tough first-round matchups. The Mavericks ousted the Utah Jazz, and the Suns survived the eighth-seeded New Orleans Pelicans, both winning in six games. But Dallas was without Luca Doncic and Phoenix was missing Devin Booker for three of the six contests.

Doncic missed the first three games of the Utah series with a calf strain suffered in the final week of the regular season as the Mavericks were attempting to improve upon their No. 4 seeding in the West.

The league’s third-leading scorer during the regular season at 28.4 points per game, Doncic picked right up where he left off upon returning for Game 4 at Utah, scoring 30, 33 and 24 points over the final three contests, recording two double-doubles and missing a third by one rebound.

“The first game, I was a little janky,” he said of his return to action. “But I felt better (in Game 5). I think the first couple of minutes I was tired, but then I was OK. I think the run in the third (quarter), I was a little tired, too, but just getting my air back.”

The Mavericks clinched the series win with a 98-96 victory at Utah on Thursday, giving Doncic and his teammates three days of rest leading into the Phoenix series.

Booker suffered his injury — a hamstring strain — in Game 2 against the Pelicans, then sat out until Thursday’s 115-109 clincher at New Orleans. He played 32 minutes in that game, contributing 13 points to the win.

Suns coach Monty Williams eased Booker back into the action by bringing him off the bench in the second half Thursday, something he doesn’t plan on doing again moving forward.

“I thought we were gonna have a fistfight over there (with) the look he gave me,” Williams said of breaking the news to Booker coming out of the break. “We had already talked about it, but we had to stick to the plan because it was going to be easier to finish (the game) with him and keep his minutes relatively lower.”

Williams said he became convinced of Booker’s good health while focused on him during the second half.

“We wanted to keep (his minutes) at about 24,” the coach said, “but he didn’t look like he was dragging (his leg) or laboring at all. And he told me, he said, ‘Coach, I feel fine, it’s strong, I have no issues.’ So I left him out there.”

The Suns swept the season series 3-0 from the Mavericks, with two wins coming by eight points and the third by seven. Two of the games were in Phoenix, a November back-to-back that Doncic missed with a sprained left knee and ankle.

Both Booker and Doncic scored 28 points in the lone meeting in Dallas in January, a game won 109-101 by the Suns.

All three meetings were held before the Mavericks traded Kristaps Porzingis to the Washington Wizards for Davis Bertans and Spencer Dinwiddie.

Dinwiddie averaged 15.3 points in the Utah series.

Steelers GM Kevin Colbert retires after 22 seasons with club

Kevin Colbert has stepped aside as general manager of the Pittsburgh Steelers — a retirement he announced earlier this year to come following the conclusion of the NFL draft.

Colbert, 65, had been general manager since 2010 and has spent 22 seasons with the organization. Pittsburgh won two Super Bowls and 10 division titles during Colbert’s time with the Steelers.

The Steelers named the Pittsburgh native the director of football operations in 2000, and in a final news conference at the conclusion of the draft on Saturday, he talked about his legacy.

“I don’t want to say better than,” Colbert said of how he was leaving the organization. “I’m proud to say we added to that (trophy) room.”

The Steelers have yet to name his successor, but Colbert is expected to retain an advisory role with the organization.

His final draft class is made up of quarterbacks Kenny Pickett and Chris Oladokun, wide receivers George Pickens and Calvin Austin III, defensive end DeMarvin Leal, linebacker Mark Robinson, and tight end/fullback Connor Heyward.

After 38 years in professional football, Colbert said he isn’t sure what Monday morning holds for him.

“It will hit you a little bit later,” he said. “It’s like a game. When a game comes to an end, you think about it and appreciate it. But you really will reflect on it when it gets quiet and you’re by yourself, and it’s like, wait a minute, what do I have to do next? I don’t know.”

Heat’s Jimmy Butler questionable, Kyle Lowry out for Game 1

Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler is questionable to play in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series against the visiting Philadelphia 76ers because of right knee inflammation, the team said Sunday.

Butler wasn’t alone in being listed as questionable for Monday’s series opener, however. The top-seeded Heat also listed guards Max Strus (hamstring) and Tyler Herro (respiratory illness) and forwards P.J. Tucker (calf), Caleb Martin (ankle) and Markieff Morris (non-COVID illness) with that status.

Guard Kyle Lowry, however, has been ruled out for Game 1 with a hamstring injury.

Butler, 32, sat out Miami’s first-round series-clinching win over the Atlanta Hawks in Game 5 on Tuesday.

A six-time All-Star, Butler averaged 30.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.3 assists in the series against Atlanta.

Lowry, 36, averaged 8.3 points and 5.3 assists in three games versus the Hawks.

Dez Bryant sees potential fit with Cardinals

Free agent wide receiver Dez Bryant isn’t ready to call it a career just yet.

Bryant, who hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2020 season, expressed interest in joining quarterback Kyler Murray, coach Kliff Kingsbury and the Arizona Cardinals.

“Kyler, the coach — I love the swagger over there,” Bryant told TMZ. “I just love the guys, especially DeAndre Hopkins — that’s my boy. We real close.”

Bryant, 33, had six catches for 47 yards and two touchdowns in six games with the Baltimore Ravens in 2020. That was the first action for the three-time Pro Bowl selection since he sustained an Achilles injury while practicing with the New Orleans Saints in 2018.

Bryant spent his first eight NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. He caught 531 passes for 7,459 yards and a franchise-best 73 touchdown receptions in 113 games after being selected by the Cowboys with the 24th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Nashville SC opens new stadium with tie vs. Union

0

Randall Leal converted a penalty kick in the 85th minute to help host Nashville SC salvage a 1-1 draw against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday in the opening of Geodis Park.

The 30,000-seat venue is the largest soccer-specific stadium in the United States or Canada.

Joe Willis made four saves to help Nashville SC (3-3-3, 12 points) extend their home unbeaten streak to 20 matches dating back to a 1-0 loss to FC Dallas on Nov. 4, 2020.

Mikael Uhre scored in the 66th minute and Andre Blake turned aside five shots for the Union (5-1-3, 18 points), who surrendered 13 corner kicks en route to seeing their winless stretch extend to three matches (0-1-2).

Nashville SC pressed for the equalizer in the late stages before Philadelphia’s Jose Martinez was whistled for a hand ball in the penalty area. Blake, who was shown a yellow card for refusing to stay on the line, guessed right on the penalty kick but was unable to deny Leal’s blast inside the left post.

The goal was Leal’s first of the season.

An apparent miscommunication by Nashville SC’s Sean Davis and Hany Mukhtar led to an opportunity on the counterattack for Philadelphia in the 66th minute. Uhre chased down a through ball from Daniel Gazdag and sidestepped Nashville SC defender Walker Zimmerman before cutting back and sending a shot in the net.

Nashville SC appeared to feed off the emotion of the crowd and nearly opened the scoring on a number of occasions.

Dax McCarty’s blast from outside the box caromed off the left post in the fifth minute.

From there, Blake stood tall to keep the match scoreless. The two-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year extended his leg to make a save on Alex Muyl from in close in the 23rd minute before making a two-handed stop on Mukhtar in the 30th.

Bears release QB Nick Foles

The Chicago Bears released quarterback Nick Foles on Sunday after failing to find a trade partner for the former Super Bowl MVP.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles said in March the team was looking to trade Foles after adding Trevor Siemian in free agency. The move allows Foles to find a new team on his own.

Foles, 33, appeared in 10 games (eight starts) in two seasons in Chicago, completing 65.1 percent of his passes for 2,102 yards with 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions and a 3-5 record. Last season, he was the third-string quarterback behind veteran Andy Dalton and rookie Justin Fields.

The Bears acquired Foles in a trade with Jacksonville two seasons ago.

Foles has thrown for 14,003 yards and 82 touchdowns in 68 games (56 starts) with five teams, most notably the Philadelphia Eagles (2012-14, 2017-18). Foles led the Eagles to a victory in Super Bowl LII.

NYCFC ride late scoring surge to topple Earthquakes

0

Keaton Parks and Gabriel Pereira scored four minutes apart in the second half to lift New York City FC to a 3-0 victory over the visiting San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday afternoon.

Parks and Pereira became the fourth and fifth players to score multiple goals this season for NYCFC (4-3-1, 13 points), who remained perfect three matches into a five-match homestand.

Chris Gloster added his first MLS goal to complete a late onslaught for NYCFC, who scored 14 goals in those three home wins after netting only five in their first five league matches.

The MLS Cup champions have lost only twice in their last 18 home matches despite rotating between three venues. Two of three wins in this homestand have come at Yankee Stadium, with the other last weekend played at Citi Field.

Sean Johnson made three saves to preserve his third clean sheet this season, including two in those recent Yankee Stadium games.

His goalkeeping counterpart J.T. Marcinkowski made six stops for San Jose, which matched the hosts for the opening hour before capitulating easily once they finally went behind.

The Earthquakes (1-5-3, 6 points) remain without a point from their travels in four matches.

Their erosion began in the 74th minute, when Parks played a slick give and go with Talles Magno down the left side of NYCFC’s attack.

Magno did well to shield himself from a challenge by a San Jose defender. And Parks also finished excellently on the run, curling a bending effort beyond Marcinkowski into the top right corner.

Pereira’s goal also involved a deceptively impressive finish, when he took Santiago Rodriguez’s feed at the edge of the penalty area and snapped a left footed shot into the left corner. Despite coming from a stationary position, it had plenty of power to beat the diving Marcinkowski.

Gloster then ran onto Maxi Moralez’s throughball 10 minutes later to finish off the outburst. This time, Marcinkowski erred in allowing Gloster’s shot between him and the near post.
