Rapids shoot for second straight win in visit to Earthquakes

0

The Colorado Rapids will look to build on their first win in a month when they travel to play the hapless San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday in a Western Conference match.

Colorado (3-3-3, 12 points) heads to Northern California after a 2-0 win at home over Portland on April 30 that snapped a five-match winless run (two losses, three draws). It was the Rapids’ second straight shutout and was accomplished despite playing the final 27 minutes and stoppage time with just 10 men.

Diego Rubio and Mark-Anthony Kaye were the goal-scorers in the victory. The duo has combined for seven of the Rapids’ last eight MLS goals.

Rubio will miss Saturday’s game, however, after accumulating two yellow cards in the win against Portland.

“San Jose has got good players who can hurt you,” Rapids coach Robin Fraser said. “The key for us is to be defensively solid and limit their chances. Offensively, we have to be good with the ball. We’ve seen that we tend to have more control in games and create more chances.”

Saturday’s match is the first of four over a 16-day stretch for Colorado.

The Earthquakes (1-5-3, 6 points) return home after a 3-0 loss at New York City FC on Sunday. San Jose had beaten Seattle 4-3 at home on April 23 in the first game after the firing of manager Matias Almeyda but reverted to its previous form in the loss in the Big Apple.

San Jose has allowed 23 goals this season, most in MLS, and has conceded at least three goals in five of their nine games.

Earthquakes midfielder Jackson Yueill said the team is still trying to adjust to interim head coach Alex Covelo’s game strategies but likes the way the things are trending.

“With Alex (Covelo)’s system, we emphasize a lot about spaces and being not so man-oriented as we have been in the past few years,” Yueill said. “That allows for you to get in front of your mark and be more connected to your teammates than it is to worry about the other players.”

Colorado won in San Jose last September to snap a 10-match winless run on the road against the Earthquakes. The Rapids have not captured consecutive matches in San Jose since July-Aug. 2003.

Handlez cap perfect group stage in NBA 2K League’s Slam Open

0

Team Handlez completed a perfect run through the NBA 2K League’s Slam Open group stage on Friday, with the community squad becoming the only side to win all six of its preliminary matches.

Handlez edged Magic Gaming 3-2 to finish 6-0 in Group 1.

Joining Handlez for in-person bracket play next week at the NBA 2K League Studio in Indianapolis will be Grizz Gaming, 76ers GC, Knicks Gaming, Hawks Talon GC, Hornets Venom GT, Wizards District Gaming, Celtics Crossover Gaming, Pistons GT, Cavs Legion GC, Pacers Gaming, Lakers Gaming, Bucks Gaming, T-Wolves Gaming, Blazer5 Gaming and DUX Infinitos.

In other Friday action, Kings Guard Gaming topped Glitchy 3-1, Pacers Gaming nipped Lakers Gaming 3-2, Bucks Gaming swept T-Wolves Gaming 3-0, Blazer5 Gaming dumped Intimidators 3-1, and Heat Check Gaming handled Hornets Venom GT 3-1.

DUX Infinitos defeated Jazz Gaming 3-1, Celtics Crossover Gaming slipped past Wizards District Gaming 3-2, Pistons GT pounded Dreamshakers 3-0, and Grizz Gaming got past Gen.G Tigers 3-2.

The 32-team field included all 24 NBA 2K League squads plus eight other teams: amateur trios that advanced through qualifying plus “community” teams featuring 2K social-media influencers.

For remote group play, the field was divided into eight groups that each consist of three NBA 2K League teams and one amateur or community team. The top two teams in each group will advance to the round of 16, the start of bracket play that will run Wednesday through May 14.

Teams opposed every other team in their group twice in best-of-five matches. The round of 16 also will feature best-of-five matches, while the quarterfinals, semifinals and final will be best-of-seven. The winning team will receive $60,000 from the Slam Open’s $150,000 prize pool.

The NBA 2K League season will run through August, with the focus on tournament play and qualifying events for tournaments. The traditional five-on-five tournaments are The Tipoff (season opener), The Turn (midseason) and The Ticket (late season).

The league is also adding a trio of three-on-three tournaments that will lead up to a three-on-three championship featuring a separate prize pool.

John Hunter Nemechek completes unfinished business at Darlington

The fastest truck won Friday’s Dead On Tools 200 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway, but not without much ado between the green flag and the checkers.

Pole winner John Hunter Nemechek fought through 10 cautions, an extra pit stop to tighten a loose wheel and a overtime restart to post his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory of the season, holding off hard-luck Carson Hocevar by .552 seconds in the two-lap shootout to the finish.

“Just a huge shoutout to all the guys that work on this No. 4 KBM Toyota Tundra,” Nemechek said after spinning his truck like a dervish in a celebratory burnout on the frontstretch.

“I thought we gave it away early, honestly, and we were able to rebound and battle back. I learned a lot tonight. I was finally able to bring home the first win of the year.”

Runner-up last fall at Darlington in a race he thought he should have won, Nemechek led a race-high 69 laps in triumphing for the first time at the Lady in Black and the 12th time in his career. In winning the pole earlier in the day, he was .432 seconds faster than second-place qualifier Ty Majeski.

Clearly, Nemechek had the speed, but his victory was by no means assured after he brought his truck to pit road under caution for a second time on Lap 61 to remedy a loose left front wheel. That left Nemechek 26th for a restart on Lap 63, but by the end of Stage 2 on Lap 90, he had climbed back to fifth in the running order.

On Lap 123, he passed Christian Eckes for the lead and held it the rest of the way, through the two final cautions and the overtime.

Hocevar was the victor in Stage 2 — the first stage win of his career — but he lost ground on pit road under caution for the stage break and ultimately recovered to restart side-by-side with Nemechek in the overtime.

Nemechek had the advantage of the outside lane for the final two laps and pulled away to win by the half-second margin.

“A lot of emotions,” said Hocevar, who ran a close second to Ben Rhodes in the previous race on Bristol Dirt. “I was freaking out for a second. I had an electrical issue, and every once in a while it would stumble, and it flat out shut off in the middle of (Turns) 1 and 2 coming to the white (flag) …

“The 4 truck (Nemechek) was really good. I was hoping I maybe could have got him. I would have done a lot into (Turns) 3 and 4. I was better than him in 1 and 2. He was better than me in 3 and 4, but I could have done a lot — just like every race car driver, right? But close once again. Hopefully, we’ll be one spot better next week.”

Grant Enfinger was third, followed by Majeski, Stage 1 winner Parker Kligerman, Ryan Preece, Zane Smith and Tyler Ankrum.

Fifty-eight-year-old Todd Bodine, making his 796th NASCAR national series start en route to 800, came home ninth, posting his first top 10 since 2012. Matt DiBenedetto followed in 10th.

Jason Day stretches Wells Fargo lead to three shots

0

Jason Day of Australia posted a 3-under 67 on Friday to open up a three-shot lead after two rounds of the Wells Fargo Championship in Potomac, Md.

Day, who leapt ahead Thursday with a first-round 63, moved to 10-under 130 for his lowest 36-hole score in five years.

Max Homa shot a second-round 66 to take sole possession of second place at 7 under. Luke List (66), Kurt Kitayama (67), James Hahn (68) and Denny McCarthy (69) were tied for third at 6 under.

Day, a former world No. 1, continued a nice run of form Friday at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. After opening his round on the back nine and playing it to even par, he made three birdies and no bogeys on the front nine, including a 14-foot birdie putt at the par-3 third hole and an 11-footer at the par-4 eighth.

“It’s nice to be able to get in at 10 under through two rounds, especially with what kind of weather we’ve got coming in on the weekend,” Day said. “I’m looking forward to it. It’s nice to be back in the mix, nice to be leading. It’s still two more days left, so I can’t get too far ahead of myself.”

Day is in search of his 13th win on tour and his first since the 2018 Wells Fargo. That victory came at the tournament’s usual home of Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C. TPC Potomac is filling in for 2022, with Quail Hollow set to host the Presidents Cup in the fall.

Homa also started his round on the back nine and began the day with an eagle at the par-5 10th. He reached the green in two and had less than 14 feet to convert the eagle.

That eagle and five birdies helped him counteract three bogeys.

“I thought I played awesome for two days,” Homa said. “Yesterday I played a really great round of golf and messed it up with probably just a bad decision off the tee and then a few bad shots in a row.

“But I’ve played great. I’ve hit the ball really well, I’ve hit my driver well, I’ve hit my irons great, I’ve made a ton of putts the last 27 holes.”

McCarthy, a native of nearby Rockville, Md., continued his best showing of the season. The world No. 157 secured the best 36-hole position of his PGA Tour career.

He will aim to win his first win on tour in front of family and friends in his home state, though he said he isn’t thinking about that possibility.

“Obviously that would be great, but I’m in such a good mindset on the course right now where I think once I get on the course … it’s still fun being in this position where I know I’m towards the top of the lead and I feel comfortable doing it,” McCarthy said.

Keegan Bradley shot the round of the day, a 5-under 65, with seven birdies and two bogeys. He moved into a tie for seventh with Chad Ramey (66) and Brian Harman (66) at 5 under.

Friday’s round was played in wet, cold conditions and Saturday’s weather forecast promises more of the same. The PGA Tour will use threesomes and start on both the first and 10th tees, like the first two days, in an effort to complete the third round earlier.

Sergio Garcia of Spain (2 under), Rickie Fowler (2 under), Tony Finau (2 under) and Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland (even) were among those to make the cut of even par or better. Among those on the wrong side of the cut line were former major champions Gary Woodland and Webb Simpson (both 5 over).

Carlos Alcaraz edges Rafael Nadal in Madrid quarterfinals

Rising teen Carlos Alcaraz upset one tennis legend on Friday and earned the right to face another on Saturday.

Alcaraz, seeded seventh, topped third-seeded Rafael Nadal 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in an all-Spanish quarterfinal at the Mutua Madrid on Friday.

Next up for Alcaraz, who turned 19 on Thursday, is a semifinal against top-seeded Novak Djokovic. The Serb rolled past 12th-seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland 6-3, 6-4.

The Friday victory was history-making for Alcaraz, who became the first teen ever to register a clay-court win against Nadal. A year ago, when Alcaraz was ranked 120th in the world, he fell 6-1, 6-2 to Nadal in the second round at Madrid.

Speaking about the Friday result, Alcaraz said, “It means a lot to me. All the hard work that I put in every day pays off today. To beat Rafa, to beat the best player in history on clay, it means a lot to me.”

Even after Nadal dominated the second set to level the match, Alcaraz remained calm, recording the only service break of the final set in the fourth game. Alcaraz never faced a break point in the third set.

“When I lost the second set, I (just) thought that I was able to come back, to do my best, try everything on court, fight until the last ball,” Alcaraz said. “It was the key.”

Alcaraz had also lost to Nadal in the semifinals at Indian Wells, Calif., in March. He subsequently produced championship runs in Miami and Barcelona. Alcaraz and Djokovic have never faced off before.

Djokovic never faced a break point and won 81 percent of his first-serve points in a comfortable victory against Hurkacz.

“I was serving really well in the second set, I think that kept me alive,” said Djokovic, a three-time Madrid champion. “I was pleased with the way I was constructing points. I tried to make him run and miss and overall It was a solid performance.”

The other semifinal will feature second-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany and fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece.

Zverev topped eighth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada 6-3, 7-5, and Tsitsipas downed sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

When Tsitsipas served for the match in the final game, Rublev had two break points to pull even at 5-5, but Tsitsipas held on.

“It’s never easy playing him, and I really had to survive that last game with my best strength and give out my soul, pretty much, to finish it in such a good way,” Tsisipas said.

FaZe, Mutineers, Subliners go 3-0 in CDL Pro-Am Classic groups

The Atlanta FaZe, Florida Mutineers, New York Subliners and Boston Breach won their respective groups in the Call of Duty League Pro-Am Classic’s group stage, which concluded Friday.

Those four teams will head to the playoff stage and be joined by the Toronto Ultra, OpTic Texas, Los Angeles Thieves and Paris Legion, who placed second in their groups after a round robin. Atlanta, Florida and New York were the only teams to finish the stage 3-0.

The tournament features all 12 Call of Duty League teams plus the top four finishers from last month’s Minnesota Open that served as a qualifying event.

For round-robin play in the opening phase, teams were divided into four groups that each featured three CDL clubs and one qualifier. All matches on Thursday and Friday were best-of-five, and the top two teams in each group advanced to the quarterfinals. The semifinals and final are scheduled for Sunday.

The qualifier that had the best showing was the Ultra’s North American Academy team, which tied Boston and Paris at 2-1 in Group D. A day after beating the Los Angeles Guerrillas, Ultra Academy NA doubled up by taking down the Breach, rallying from down 2-0 for a 3-2 stunner.

But after Paris defeated Ultra Academy NA 3-1, there was a three-way tie for two available spots, and Ultra Academy NA had the lowest map differential (0) to lose the tiebreaker.

The FaZe took down Toronto’s senior team 3-1 to complete Group A unblemished. Atlanta won 250-160 on Gavutu Hardpoint, lost to the Ultra 6-4 on Desert Siege Search and Destroy, then rebounded with a 3-1 win on Gavutu Control and a 250-164 result on Tuscan Hardpoint.

Florida defeated the Ultra’s European Union Academy team 3-1 to secure its undefeated record. The Mutineers eked out a 260-237 win on Gavutu Control and lost 6-3 on Berlin Search and Destroy before earning wins of 3-1 on Gavutu Control and 250-183 on Tuscan Hardpoint.

After playing just one match Thursday, New York beat Team WaR 3-1 and the London Royal Ravens 3-0. The Subliners dominated London 250-118 on Bocage Hardpoint before squeaking out a 6-5 win on Desert Siege Search and Destroy and a 3-2 triumph on Gavutu Control.

The tournament continues Saturday with four quarterfinal matches:

Canelo Alvarez moves up a class to take on Dmitry Bivol

0

The lofty pedigree of one of boxing’s top fighters enables Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to dictate fight dates.

His success in the ring also earned Alvarez the freedom from being tied to specific promoters or viewing platforms for long periods. Moreover, Alvarez can navigate weight classes to his preference, as he did last year when he became the first undisputed super-middleweight champion in the sport’s history.

With the super-middleweight landscape under his domain, Alvarez now seeks similar acclaim at the 175-pound light-heavyweight class.

On Saturday night, the native of Mexico will challenge WBA light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nev. The bout is the first of Alvarez’s two-fight deal with promotional company Matchroom Boxing and streaming service DAZN.

“I beat all the champions in 168, so for now, I’m ok in that weight,” Alvarez said in a news conference Wednesday that also featured Bivol. “But I need to take other challenges for myself. I need to feel that kind of challenge. To go up to 175 and win another title is amazing for me.”

Alvarez (57-1-2, 39 KOs) is no stranger to light-heavyweight. In 2019, he challenged Sergey Kovalev and scored an 11th-round knockout victory. But Alvarez immediately vacated the title to embark on his successful super-middleweight consolidation.

“I feel alive when I have this kind of challenge,” Alvarez said. “I respect the boxing skills of Dmitry Bivol but this is my time. I’m in my prime and I enjoy this kind of moment.”

However, this new light-heavyweight venture should be different. Although still a champion when he fought Alvarez, Kovalev had suffered knockout losses to Andre Ward and Eleider Alvarez. Bivol, of Russia, remains at a career peak.

Since his title-winning performance against Trent Broadhurst in 2017, Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs) has made seven successful defenses. He fully understands the career and financial windfall linked to fighting someone like Alvarez.

“I asked my team many, many years I want to fight the best guys from light-heavyweight to super-middleweight,” Bivol said. “I’m glad I got this fight. I hope we can make a great fight for boxing fans.”

Lauded for his boxing skills, Bivol is confident of interrupting the trajectory Alvarez has enjoyed the past eight years.

“Of course, I want to keep my belt and want to win,” Bivol said. “And of course, I respect him. He’s a great champion. I had a long trip to this moment. Now I have to do my job. If you don’t believe in what you do, you never win. I believe in my victory. Why not?”

Miami Grand Prix debuts amid F1’s soaring popularity in U.S.

In July of 2007, it was announced that the United States Grand Prix’s controversial eight-year run at the infield road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway would come to an end — and with it, perhaps Formula One racing in the U.S. for the foreseeable future.

American F1 fans sunk into depression. But not for long.

The United States Grand Prix returned in 2012 at Circuit of the Americas, a purpose-built, natural-terrain track built just outside Austin, Texas.

This year, the U.S. is being fed a second helping of F1 action with the debut of the Miami Grand Prix this Sunday.

Miami will be the fifth race on the 23-race schedule in 2022. It will give the U.S. two races in a single season for the first time since 1984 when races were held in Detroit and Dallas — or as one F1 writer quipped, in Motown and Moo Town.

F1 and its rekindled love affair with the U.S. will get even deeper next year when a race in Las Vegas is added to the schedule.

What’s up with all of this? F1 observers are crediting everything from the smashing success of Netflix’s “Drive to Survive” — a docuseries produced in collaboration with F1 — to better racing because of changes to the cars.

Sunday’s race will be held on a 19-turn, 3.36-mile layout around Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens north of downtown Miami.

The track features a couple of long straights. That could favor the Red Bull car of Max Verstappen, who has won twice in 2022 and whose cars are loaded with straightline speed.

The current season has seen the Belgian-Dutch Verstappen, the 2021 champion, and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc of Monaco emerge as the drivers to beat. Leclerc has won the other two grand prix thus far.

Notably absent from the top this year has been Mercedes’ seven-time champion, Lewis Hamilton. His cars have been hampered by “porpoising” problems and lack of straightline speed in relation to the Red Bull and Ferrari cars. Mercedes is reportedly putting revamped rear wings on the cars this weekend in hopes of solving its problems.

Then again, several teams will be unveiling changes in Miami.

A bonus for American fans this year has been the resurgence of the Haas F1 team. Owned by American Gene Haas, the team suffered as the worst team in the field the last few years. But armed with the new VF 22 chassis, Haas driver Kevin Magnussen sits 10th in points with 15. Teammate Mick Schumacher has shown speed as well.

Magnussen was brought on board after Haas gave the boot to Russian driver Nikita Mazepin, who is a strong supporter of Vladimir Putin and Russia’s brutal invasion of the Ukraine.
