Luis Robert’s blast in 10th lifts White Sox past Royals

Luis Robert hit a two-out, two-run home run in the 10th inning and the Chicago White Sox defeated the host Kansas City Royals 5-3 in the first game of a five-game series Monday night.

The two clubs will play a day-night doubleheader Tuesday.

Ryan Burr (1-1) pitched the ninth for the win.

Kansas City’s Scott Barlow (2-1) came on in the ninth and retired the White Sox in order. He then retired the first two batters in the 10th, keeping designated runner Josh Harrison at second. However, Robert’s 425-foot blast changed everything.

Liam Hendriks picked up his 10th save by striking out all three batters in the bottom of the 10th.

Johnny Cueto made a spectacular return to Kansas City, pitching six scoreless innings for the White Sox, allowing just two hits. It was Cueto’s White Sox debut after his contract was purchased from Triple-A Charlotte earlier Monday.

It was Cueto’s first appearance at Kauffman Stadium since he pitched a complete-game victory over the New York Mets in Game 2 of the 2015 World Series as a member of the Royals. He came to the Royals just before the trade deadline in 2015 for three players. He starred down the stretch and went 2-1 in the postseason for Kansas City.

Kansas City starter Brad Keller also pitched well, allowing three runs on eight hits in seven innings.

The White Sox got on the board in the third on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Vaughn. Adam Engel led off with a flyball to left-center that seemed to confuse the Royals outfielders as it dropped between left fielder Andrew Benintendi and center fielder Michael A. Taylor for a double. Engel then stole third and scored on Vaughn’s flyout to right.

Robert led off the fourth with an infield single, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games. He scored when Yasmani Grandal lined an 0-2 pitch into the bullpen in right field.

The Royals tied it in the eighth, with two runs coming on a double by Whit Merrifield, who missed a home run by a few feet. He went to third on the throw home and scored on an RBI single by Benintendi.

Six-run first carries Rangers past Angels

Eli White singled twice in a six-run first inning, Jonah Heim homered and the Texas Rangers earned a 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday in Arlington, Texas.

After a slow start, Rangers starter Jon Gray (1-1) rebounded, and he gave his club a 5 2/3-inning outing. The right-hander was charged with four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out eight. He picked up his first win as a Ranger.

Joe Barlow pitched around a leadoff walk in the ninth inning for his seventh save in as many chances.

Most of the action came in the first inning, as the teams combined for nine runs, with the Rangers scoring six times.

Based on how the Angels attacked Gray early in counts, it looked as if it would be a short stint for the Texas starter.

Taylor Ward singled on the first pitch of the game, and he advanced to third on Mike Trout’s single. Shohei Ohtani blistered an RBI double to deep center. Brandon Marsh’s two-out, two-run double to left gave the Angels a three-run first-inning lead that didn’t last long.

Los Angeles starter Noah Syndergaard (3-2) didn’t make it through the first inning.

The Rangers scored six times on five hits, chasing Syndergaard after two-thirds of an inning and 42 pitches. Syndergaard was charged with six runs (four earned) before handing the ball off to Jaime Barria, who gave his club 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Rangers sent 11 to the plate in the big inning.

White singled to open the inning for Texas. He stole second before Marcus Semien walked, then scored on Corey Seager’s single to right. Adolis Garcia followed with an RBI double, and Kole Calhoun’s sacrifice fly made it 3-3.

Heim reached on first baseman Jared Walsh’s error, which gave the Rangers a 4-3 lead. After Sam Huff’s two-out single and Brad Miller’s walk loaded the bases, White’s single off Barria capped the rally.

Andrew Velazquez’s RBI single in the fourth inning closed the Angels’ deficit to 6-4, but Heim got the run back with a solo shot off Mike Mayers in the seventh.

Freddy Peralta, Brewers blank Braves with two-hitter

Freddy Peralta racked up a season-high 10 strikeouts through seven shutout innings as the Milwaukee Brewers opened a six-game homestand with a 1-0 win over the Atlanta Braves on Monday.

Peralta (3-1) surrendered just two hits and walked one to lead the Brewers to their third win in four games. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA over his past five starts.

On a night when both pitching staffs were in control, Milwaukee scored the lone run on a sixth-inning wild pitch by Ian Anderson (3-2).

If the Braves had any hopes of coming back, they were quickly squashed by Devin Williams and Josh Hader, who were dominant out of the bullpen.

Williams struck out the side in the eighth and Hader followed suit in the ninth for his major-league-leading 14th save. Brewers pitchers retired Atlanta’s final 17 hitters in order to secure the win.

Atlanta lost for the third time in four games.

In the Milwaukee sixth, Hunter Renfroe doubled with one out, went to third on Omar Narvaez’s groundout to first and scored on Anderson’s errant delivery with Tyrone Taylor at the plate.

Renfroe had the only extra-base hit of the game and finished the night 1-for-2 with a walk. Luis Urias went 2-for-3 with a walk for the Brewers, who managed only five hits.

Anderson turned in his second quality start of the season, as he allowed the one earned run in six innings. He gave up just four hits, walked two and struck out three.

Braves reliever Spencer Strider came on and went two innings, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out three.

Marcell Ozuna had a single and a walk and Austin Riley also singled to account for the Braves’ only two hits on the night.

The back half of Atlanta’s lineup struggled, as the bottom five hitters combined to go 0-for-15 with 11 strikeouts.

Willson Contreras, Wade Miley lead Cubs past Pirates

Willson Contreras’ grand slam highlighted an eight-run first, and Wade Miley yielded just one hit over seven strong innings, as the Chicago Cubs snapped a five-game home skid with Monday night’s 9-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Chicago led 4-0 when Contreras hit the 100th home run of his career, well into the left-center field bleachers off Bryse Wilson to clear the bases and essentially secure his team’s season-high third consecutive victory. Ian Happ and Yan Gomes each had three hits with an RBI for the Cubs.

Meanwhile, Miley (1-0) was brilliant after allowing three runs and five walks in three innings at San Diego in his Cubs’ debut on May 10. The veteran left-hander didn’t yield a hit until Michael Chavis’ two-out single in the fifth, and he struck out six without a walk.

A day after being no-hit but still winning 1-0 over Cincinnati, the Pirates’ offensive struggles continued while recording just three hits. Yoshi Tsutsugo and Rodolfo Castro each singled in the eighth for Pittsburgh, which has totaled six runs and been shut out twice while losing three of its last five.

Pirates starter Dillon Peters (3-1) faced just seven batters in the first. He was charged with five runs while giving up four hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning. Wilson, meanwhile, lasted 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs — three earned — with eight hits and two walks.

Contreras opened the bottom of the first with a double to right-center. He scored on a double by Happ, who came home on Gomes’ single. Andrelton Simmons later delivered an RBI infield single in his first Chicago at-bat, and Gomes scored on a bases-loaded walk to Rafael Ortega to give Chicago a four-run lead.

Contreras followed with his second hit of the inning and his fourth career grand slam.

Xander Bogaerts’ blast helps Red Sox pull away from Astros

Xander Bogaerts homered during Boston’s three-run eighth inning and Enrique Hernandez and J.D. Martinez both went 2-for-4 as the Red Sox defeated the visiting Houston Astros 6-3 on Monday night.

The hosts broke open the see-saw game against Houston reliever Hector Neris (1-2), ultimately earning their third win in four games.

Hernandez doubled down the left field line and traded places by scoring the go-ahead run on Martinez’s double into the left-center gap two batters later. Bogaerts added key insurance with a towering two-run homer over the Green Monster.

Trevor Story also homered for Boston.

Matt Strahm (2-1) won in relief, working 1 2/3 scoreless innings of one-hit ball. He struck out three and walked none.

Hansel Robles tossed a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Michael Brantley (2-for-4) and Chas McCormick (2-for-3, home run) had multiple hits for the Astros.

Astros starter Jake Odorizzi collapsed as he came off the mound to cover first base on the grounder that ended the fifth inning, and he was stretchered off the field. The team later announced that he was dealing with lower left leg discomfort.

Odorizzi threw five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk. He struck out four.

The Red Sox broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning.

Hernandez hit a leadoff single and Martinez followed with a one-out single to right. After Bogaerts walked, McCormick couldn’t catch Alex Verdugo’s fly ball to shallow center, and Hernandez scored on a RBI forceout of Martinez at third.

Houston knotted the score in the fifth on McCormick’s leadoff homer into the final section of Green Monster Seats in center field.

Boston moved on top again in the bottom of the fifth when Franchy Cordero scored on a passed ball after doubling to left.

In the sixth, Houston’s Yuli Gurriel tied the score at 2-2, sending a sacrifice fly to deep center. Brantley’s double and a walk to Alex Bregman earlier in the frame chased Red Sox starter Garrett Whitlock, who worked five-plus innings of three-hit, two-run ball.

Boston relievers Jake Diekman and John Schreiber combined to strand a runner on third, ending the inning before a 1-hour, 38-minute rain delay.

The Astros jumped ahead in the seventh as Jose Altuve’s ground-ball single through the middle scored Jason Castro, who had doubled.

Houston’s first lead was short-lived as the Red Sox tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning on Story’s first homer of the season at Fenway Park. It was his second long ball overall.

Yusei Kikuchi delivers as Blue Jays beat Mariners

Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi pitched six scoreless innings, Bo Bichette and Matt Chapman hit solo home runs and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Seattle Mariners 6-2 Monday night.

Kikuchi (2-1), making his first start against his former team, allowed one hit and three walks while striking out six in the opener of a three-game series.

Eugenio Suarez hit a solo homer for Seattle.

Seattle right-hander Chris Flexen (1-6) allowed three runs, six hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out seven.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a single in the third to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

Bichette hit his fourth homer of the season with one out in the first inning.

Chapman hit his sixth homer of the season with two out in the second.

Kikuchi retired 11 in a row after walking Ty France in the first before Jesse Winker led off the fifth with a double.

Penn Murfee replaced Flexen with one out in the bottom of the sixth with two runners on base through walks. The right-hander struck out Danny Jansen before yielding Raimel Tapia’s RBI single.

Trevor Richards replaced Kikuchi in the seventh and allowed Eugenio Suarez’s seventh home run of the season — and 200th of his career — with one out. After two walks, Yimi Garcia took over and allowed pinch hitter Adam Frazier’s single that loaded the bases. The inning ended on a shallow flyout and a groundout.

Bichette singled and Guerrero walked to open the bottom of the seventh against Wyatt Mills. They advanced on a wild pitch and scored on pinch hitter Alejandro Kirk’s single.

Toronto’s Ryan Borucki pitched a perfect eighth.

Bichette had an RBI single against Roenis Elias in the bottom of the eighth for his third hit of the game.

Ross Stripling allowed one run in the ninth on a walk, Santiago Espinal’s error and Frazier’s RBI single before Adam Cimber recorded to outs to earn his second save of the season.

Toronto put left-hander Tim Mayza (left forearm inflammation) on the injured list Monday and recalled left-hander Andrew Vasquez from Triple-A Buffalo.

Seattle placed right-hander Drew Steckenrider on the restricted list and selected left-hander Elias from Triple-A Tacoma.

Luis Severino, Yankees shut down Orioles

Jose Trevino blasted a three-run homer and Luis Severino allowed one run on one hit over six innings to lead the New York Yankees to a 6-2 victory over the host Baltimore Orioles to open a four-game series on Monday.

After the Yankees took a 1-0 lead on Giancarlo Stanton’s double that scored Anthony Rizzo in the third inning, Trevino provided the big blow an inning later.

Gleyber Torres singled to left to open the fourth. Joey Gallo then struck out before Torres took second on Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s infield single to shortstop.

Two pitches later, Trevino drilled rookie right-hander Kyle Bradish’s fastball off the right-field foul pole to clear the bases and extend the lead to 4-0.

The Orioles pulled to within 4-1 on the first of Anthony Santander’s two solo home runs, as he hit one to right field as a left-handed hitter in the fourth before clearing the left-field fence as a right-handed hitter in the ninth.

The Orioles’ other hit was a single by Rougned Odor in the seventh inning.

Josh Donaldson and Rizzo hit back-to-back solo homers in the ninth inning.

Severino (3-0) had seven strikeouts against just two walks to beat the Orioles for the second time this season. He allowed four earned runs on three hits to go along with five strikeouts and two walks in six innings, picking up the win in the Yankees’ 12-8 victory on April 26.

Right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga held the Orioles scoreless in the seventh and Chad Green took care of the eighth before turning it over to Aroldis Chapman, who closed it out in the ninth.

Bradish, making just the fourth start of his career, dropped to 1-2 after allowing four earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 4 1/3 innings before being relieved by Keegan Akin.

Akin allowed just one hit to go along with three strikeouts and a walk over 3 2/3 innings.

Donaldson had a game-high three hits, while Torres had two hits and two walks and Trevino had two hits for the Yankees.

Four-run second inning helps Marlins smoke Nationals

Sandy Alcantara retired the final 20 batters he faced, leading the host Miami Marlins to an 8-2 win over the Washington Nationals on Monday night.

With his start moved up due to Jesus Luzardo being placed on the injured list on Sunday, Alcantara allowed just three hits, one walk and one run in eight innings, striking out four.

Alcantara (3-2) struggled early, requiring 43 pitches to complete two innings. But he needed just 57 pitches over the next six frames.

The Marlins trailed early on Monday but had a four-run second inning, led by Avisail Garcia’s solo home run.

Miami finished with a season-high 16 hits, including three each by Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Bryan De La Cruz. All three of Chisholm’s hits were over 100 mph in exit velocity.

Garcia, Jorge Soler and Erik Gonzalez each had two RBIs for Miami.

Washington starter Aaron Sanchez (2-3) took the loss, allowing eight hits, three walks and four runs.

Miami allowed a first-inning run for the fourth straight game as three of Washington’s first four hitters singled. Cesar Hernandez got an infield knock, Josh Bell grounded a single just under the glove of Chisholm at second base and Yadiel Hernandez earned the RBI with a liner that deflected off shortstop Gonzalez’s mitt.

Alcantara escaped further trouble when Maikel Franco bounced into a bases-loaded force out at the plate and Lane Thomas struck out looking.

Garcia’s 402-foot homer got the Marlins going in the second, tying the score 1-1. Then, after Brian Anderson walked and De La Cruz doubled, Gonzalez smacked a two-run single. Jacob Stallings followed with a double, and Chisholm capped the rally with an RBI single for a 4-1 lead.

The Marlins loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh. Soler then smashed a ball 117 mph to shortstop Dee Strange-Gordon, who couldn’t handle it as two runs scored on the single. A third run scored on the play as pitcher Victor Arano, backing up home plate, tried to cut down Soler at second.

Garcia capped the rally with an RBI single, giving Miami an 8-1 lead.

Washington closed the scoring with Thomas’ RBI single in the ninth off reliever Anthony Bass.

Harold Castro blasts tiebreaking HR in 9th as Tigers edge Rays

Harold Castro hit a tiebreaking, two-out homer in the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers won their fourth straight game by edging the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 Monday night in St. Petersburg, Fla.

With the game tied at 2, Castro lifted an 0-1 fastball from Andrew Kittredge (3-1) deep to right-center for his first homer and the game-winning blow, making a winner of reliever Michael Fulmer (2-2).

Closer Gregory Soto allowed a single but retired Mike Zunino with a flyout to center field to shut down the Rays in the ninth for his sixth save in seven chances.

Jonathan Schoop swatted a two-run homer, and Willi Castro went 2-for-4. Miguel Cabrera collected a single to stretch his hitting streak to seven games.

A native of Tampa, Detroit starter Alex Faedo was strong over 5 2/3 innings in his third career start and first-ever in a big-league uniform in front of his family and friends. He allowed one run and four hits in the outing, striking out four and walking one in his 83-pitch effort.

For the Rays, Brett Phillips had a big night at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a homer, double, two runs scored and an RBI.

In his seventh start, Tampa Bay’s Corey Kluber yielded two runs and four hits in six innings. He struck out a season-high eight and didn’t issue a walk.

After Cabrera’s leadoff single in the fourth, Schoop barreled up an 88 mph sinker from Kluber that ran inside on the right-handed hitter. The long homer to left field, an estimated 404 feet, was Schoop’s third this season.

Leading off the sixth, Phillips launched a towering shot off Faedo’s 91 mph four-seam fastball, a majestic blast down the right-field line that caromed off the C-ring near the roof of the domed stadium. The ball bounced back into right field as the fleet Phillips sped around the bases.

Detroit manager A.J. Hinch challenged the play, but the home-run call was upheld for Phillips’ third long ball.

Phillips legged out a hustle double in the eighth with Detroit playing its outfield deep, and a walk to Yandy Diaz and a wild pitch led to Wander Franco’s tying sacrifice fly.

Mystics look for revenge in early rematch vs. Wings

The Washington Mystics and Dallas Wings will already have a second matchup in this young season when they face each other on Tuesday at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas.

The Wings handed the Mystics their first loss of the season on Friday, taking a 94-86 victory in Washington, D.C., behind 27 points from Arike Ogunbowale and 21 points from Allisha Gray.

One positive note for the Mystics in the loss was that it featured the return of Alysha Clark. The 34-year-old forward missed all of the 2021 season after suffering a foot injury while playing overseas.

In her Washington debut, Clark tallied nine points, four rebounds and an assist in 20 minutes of play.

“She’s just so diligent,” Mystics star Elena Delle Donne told the Washington Post. “Every day you see her showing up, bringing the same energy, the same focus. And there’s a lot of days and I’m sure a lot of pain and a lot of the things she was working through … Now we get to finally play. I’ve been wanting to play with AC for far too long now.”

Delle Donne has also eased back into the Mystics’ lineup this season. The former two-time MVP sat out the 2020 season due to COVID-19-related health concerns and battled a back injury last year. She’s played in three of the Mystics’ first four games this season, averaging 20 points and seven rebounds per game.

The game Delle Donne missed was Washington’s first road game, at Minnesota, due to what the team called “load management.” According to Mystics coach Mike Thibault, the plan seems to be for Delle Donne to play in Dallas against the Wings, but rest during Friday’s matchup vs. the Atlanta Dream.

While Delle Donne is a go, the Mystics listed guard Natasha Cloud as questionable for Tuesday’s game. She is returning from health and safety protocol. To bring Cloud back on the active roster, the Mystics had to release rookie Katie Benzan.

The Wings have played — and won — another game since facing the Mystics last week. Dallas topped the New York Liberty 81-71 on Sunday behind 21 points from Ogunbowale.

“I would just say that’s the way the game came to me,” Ogunbowale said. “Personally, I didn’t score much in the first half, but my team held it down.”

In her fourth pro season out of Notre Dame, Ogunbowale is averaging 18.3 points per game.

Fellow Wings guard Tyasha Harris didn’t play against the Liberty and is questionable for Tuesday’s game with an ankle injury.
