Tiger Woods victory would cause historic loss for sportsbook

0

Tiger Woods may be the sentimental fan favorite but the 15-major champion pulling off an unlikely victory at the PGA Championship is a potential nightmare scenario for at least one sportsbook.

Woods, 46, is being offered at +6600 by BetMGM to claim his 16th major title on Sunday. He has been backed by 3.8 percent of the winning bets and 6.2 percent of the handle – making him not only the biggest liability this week, but the biggest liability for any event in the history of the sportsbook.

“If Tiger were to win, it would be the biggest losing result in BetMGM history,” VP of Trading Jason Scott said Tuesday.

The sportsbook is offering Woods at -125 to make the cut compared to +100 to miss the weekend. Woods missing the cut has drawn 58 percent of the bets and 97 percent of the handle, impacted by one $13,000 wager at +115.

“Tiger missing the cut would be a good outcome for the sportsbook,” Scott said.

Despite his longshot odds and with last month’s Masters his lone PGA Tour event since a single-car accident in February 2021, Woods has been supported by the second-highest amount of money wagered to win at Southern Hills.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm were the co-favorites at +1200 on Tuesday. Tour rookie Cameron Young, who has three runner-ups this season, is the second-biggest liability at BetMGM with 4.5 percent of the handle backing him at +6600.

Woods will be paired for the first two rounds with world No. 7 Rory McIlroy and No. 8 Jordan Spieth. The group will tee off at 9:11 a.m. ET on Thursday and at 2:36 p.m. Friday.

Woods has four PGA Championships on his resume, including the last time it was played at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla. in 2007. He said he is feeling better as he continues to recover from a serious leg injury sustained in the accident.

“It’s only going to keep getting stronger,” Woods told reporters. “The more I use it, the more strength it gains. Am I ever going to have full mobility? No. Never again. But I’ll be able to get stronger. It’s going to ache, but that’s the way it’s going to be.”

Reports: Titans reach deal with first-round pick Treylon Burks

The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms with wide receiver Treylon Burks, the No. 18 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.

The deal reportedly is for four years and $14.4 million and is fully guaranteed. It contains a fifth-year team option.

Burks, 22, played at Arkansas. In his junior season in 2021, he made 66 catches for 1,104 yards with 11 touchdowns and earned first-team All-SEC honors. He was the first Arkansas receiver since 2012 to post a 1,000-yard season.

In three seasons with the Razorbacks, Burks appeared in 32 games and had 146 catches for 2,399 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Auburn’s Jabari Smith favored to go No. 1 in 2022 draft

Who doesn’t need a 6-foot-10 forward with 3-point range and an on-your-head dunk mindset?

That’s what oddsmakers are asking about Auburn forward Jabari Smith, the growing favorite to be the No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2022 NBA Draft on June 23.

Smith is +100 at DraftKings and FanDuel ahead of Gonzaga 7-footer Chet Holmgren. He’s an even bigger favorite at BetMGM (-105), where Holmgren is +145.

Holmgren is +120 at DraftKings, and +135 at FanDuel and BetMGM to be the top pick next month.

Duke’s Paolo Banchero is a distant third — +420 at FanDuel, +380 at DraftKings — in the futures market for the No. 1 draft pick.

The delta between the top three and the rest has become massive, but the market figures to take a more defined shape coming out of the scouting combine in Chicago this week.

A big mile marker in the pre-draft process, the lottery to determine picks 1-14 held Tuesday night, will also impact odds.

Jaden Ivey of Purdue is +4000 at DraftKings and +3500 at FanDuel and BetMGM.

Shaedon Sharpe has longer odds, including +6500 at FanDuel and +7500 at DraftKings, but he is ahead of Iowa’s Keegan Murray at all three books.

Sharpe, who didn’t play at Kentucky last season, is +8000 at BetMGM and Murray is +10000.

Ben Bernanke Shares His Views on Bitcoin

0

Former Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke spoke about crypto in an interview with CNBC, noting that as a substitute for fiat money, which they were intended to be, cryptocurrencies haven’t succeeded, but as a speculative asset they are successful.
Bernanke, who served as the Fed chairman from 2006 to 2014, believes the main use of bitcoin is mostly for underground economic activities and often things that are illegal or illicit, and doesn’t expect it to take over as an alternative form of money.

Maple Leafs’ Mitch Marner carjacked

Toronto Maple Leafs star forward Mitch Marner was the victim of a carjacking on Monday night, police said.

Toronto Police tweeted that a man was robbed at 7:46 p.m. of a black Range Rover by three assailants who had two handguns and a knife. The suspects left the scene in the vehicle.

Marner was not injured.

The incident occurred outside a theater in the Etobicoke region of the city.

“We can confirm Mitch Marner was the unfortunate victim of a carjacking in Etobicoke on Monday evening,” the team said in a statement Tuesday morning. “He was unharmed in the incident and the Club & Mitch are thankful for Toronto Police Services’ support. Anyone with information is asked to reach out to Toronto Police Services.”

The Toronto Sun reported Marner and a friend were heading to the movies when they were approached by mask-wearing suspects who said they wanted the Range Rover. “Go ahead and take it,” the Sun reported Marner as saying.

Per the report, the suspects didn’t know it was Marner they approached.

Toronto is in the midst of a rise in auto-related crimes.

“I’m thankful no one was physically injured in this incident, according to police,” Mayor John Tory told the Sun. “I know police are working right now to arrest the suspects in this case and have been working non-stop to crack down on carjackings — a number of arrests were announced last week.”

He added: “I’m sure our great police service will get to the bottom of this incident and make sure those responsible face justice.”

Marner, 25, led the Maple Leafs in assists with 62 assists this season and was second to Auston Matthews with 97 points. He scored eight points (two goals, six assists) in seven playoff games. Toronto lost to Tampa Bay in seven games in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Maple Leafs selected the Ontario native with the fourth overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. In 427 career games, he has 455 points (138 goals, 317 assists).

NYCFC out to continue unbeaten streak at DC United

0

New York City FC clearly have been going in the right direction in recent weeks.

DC United’s success hasn’t been as extensive, but perhaps a rally in their last game will have them pointing upward as well.

The teams meet Wednesday night in Washington.

NYCFC (5-3-2, 17 points) have a five-game unbeaten string (4-0-1) in MLS play. The most recent result was a 2-0 blanking of visiting Columbus.

“We have talked about putting together a streak with good results and making it so our lowest level is so high that we get something from every game and I think we do that now,” NYCFC coach Ronny Deila said. “I think we attack better now than we have done with more width in the game, more real wingers, I feel there’s a lot of development in this team.”

New York has racked up 16 goals in its past four MLS wins.

DC United (5-4-1, 13 points) have gone 2-1-1 in MLS play under interim coach Chad Ashton. That included a comeback from a two-goal deficit for a 2-2 draw Saturday at Inter Miami.

“I loved how we continued to push,” Ashton said. “I loved our mentality. I loved the guys’ positivity with each other. They stayed in a good place the entire time.”

Taxi Fountas has registered five goals in the past four games for DC United.

New York announced Monday the signing of defender Maxime Chanot to a new three-year contract. He has been with the club since 2016, making him the longest-serving player on the roster.

“What we have achieved together last season has made all the years of hard work and sacrifice worth it,” Chanot, 32, said. “I look forward to the challenge of building on our recent success, while having the opportunity to help the younger generation of NYCFC talent to fulfill their dreams.”

With this next game coming midweek after weekend outings, substitutes could be vital for both teams.

“It’s great to see the job the subs (have done) when they come into the game,” Ashton said.

DC United midfielder Russell Canouse, who recorded his first assist of the season Saturday, will appear in his 100th MLS regular-season game if he’s in the lineup.

PGA sets dream group: Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods

0

Jordan Spieth needs only the PGA Championship to complete his career Grand Slam, and he’ll be paired in the first two days with two men who have won the PGA multiple times — Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

McIlroy, ranked No. 7 in the world, and No 8. Spieth will tee off with Woods in the marquee pairing at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., at 9:11 a.m. ET on Thursday and at 2:36 p.m. Friday.

Together, the group has 115 PGA Tour wins, 22 major championships and five FedEx Cups.

Spieth, 28, finished second in the PGA in 2015 when he was the hottest player in golf, winning the Masters and the U.S. Open that year. He added The Open championship in 2017.

McIlroy, 33, won PGA titles in 2012 and 2014 for two of his four wins in majors.

Woods, a four-time winner, has won 15 major tournaments. He is feeling better as he continues to recover from a serious leg injury sustained in a car accident in February 2021.

“It’s only going to keep getting stronger,” Woods told reporters Sunday. “The more I use it, the more strength it gains. Am I ever going to have full mobility? No. Never again. But I’ll be able to get stronger. It’s going to ache, but that’s the way it’s going to be.”

This isn’t the only high-profile group at the PGA Championship: the top three players in the world also are paired together.

World No. 1 and pre-tournament betting favorite Scottie Scheffler is paired with No. 2 Jon Rahm of Spain and No. 3 Collin Morikawa, and will highlight Thursday’s afternoon wave, teeing off at 2:36 p.m. They’ll start at 9:11 a.m. on Friday.

Three Americans ranked in the top 12 — Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Cantlay — will tee off at 2:14 p.m. ET on Thursday and at 8:49 a.m. ET the next day.

Wix.com Reports Q1 Miss, Revenue Slightly Above Expectations

0

Wix.com Ltd. (NASDAQ:WIX) reported its Q1 results, with EPS of ($0.72) coming in worse than the Street estimate of ($0.64). Revenue was $342 million, compared to the Street estimate of $340.55 million.
The company provided its Q2/22 outlook, expecting revenue in the range of $342-346 million, missing the consensus estimate of $356.2 million. The FCF margin for 2022 is likely to depend on the revenue growth rate, nonetheless, the company expects it to be positive. In advance of its investor day on May 19, the company announced a target of 20% FCF margin by 2025. This, according to the analyst at Berenberg Bank, should alleviate investors’ concerns regarding profitability.
The company continues to see a slowdown at the top of the funnel, which may weigh on subscription growth. Moreover, in Q1, Wix Stores users were experiencing softer growth compared to a year ago due to the tough macro environment, with EU users relatively more affected than those in the U.S.

Report: Bills sign first-round pick CB Kaiir Elam

The Buffalo Bills signed their first-round pick Kaiir Elam to his four-year contract worth a fully guaranteed $13.69 million, Pro Football Network reported Tuesday.

The slotted terms for being the No. 23 pick in the 2022 draft include a $7.136 million signing bonus and a fifth-year team option.

The cornerback finished his career at Florida with five interceptions in 30 games. Elam took part in the Bills’ rookie minicamp last weekend.

“We think in our system, it’ll be good and he’ll be able to play well in a mutually beneficial approach to press, off, changing some things up. And he’s got a great support system behind him,” Bills coach Sean McDermott said.

Favored Heat have heavy support over Celtics in Game 1

The Miami Heat are favored in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals with the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night, and bettors are siding with the home team.

Miami to win is the most popular bet at BetRivers on Tuesday with 68.86 percent of moneyline wagers and 66.12 percent of tickets on the Heat to win the opener in the best-of-seven series.

Miami is -1.5 at most books but as of six hours before the game, DraftKings offered Boston +2. The moneyline offers are -130 for Miami at most books and Boston is +106 at FanDuel and +110 at BetMGM and DraftKings.

Over 203.5 total points has been most popular at major books but not by a wide margin. Fifty-two percent of bettors sided with the over at DraftKings.

The top-seeded Heat have prevailed in six straight conference final appearances, tied for the fourth-longest streak in NBA history. Two of those series victories came against Boston (2012, 2020).

The second-seeded Celtics have dropped four straight Eastern Conference finals, including three in a four-season stretch from 2017-20.

While Miami has established a greater pattern of recent postseason success — including three NBA titles since 2006 — coach Erik Spoelstra sees nothing easy about playing the Celtics.

“Our guys love competition and love being challenged,” Spoelstra said on Monday. “They love taking on big challenges. That’s what we’re facing. Boston has played as well as anyone in the entire league once they got to 2022. It’s not by accident. They’re playing very strong basketball. They do it on both ends.”

The Celtics ousted the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks in seven games in the East semifinals. They wrapped it up with a 109-81 rout on Sunday.

Boston last won the NBA Finals in 2008 and the current roster knows it will have to be ready to mix it up with the Heat.

“It’s the playoffs, and I feel like the deeper that you go, it’s more intense, it’s physical,” veteran big man Al Horford said on Monday. “Even though the first round was very physical for us, it’s not going to be any different. Both teams play hard, but both teams defensively are tops in the league, or one of the best for sure. It’s just a given that both teams are going to go hard.”

Both teams feature a big-time star that will be expected to lead the way.

Celtics forward Jayson Tatum is averaging 28.3 points, 6.1 assists, 5.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals in the postseason, while Heat forward Jimmy Butler is contributing 28.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.1 steals.

Tatum, a three-time All-Star, says he is ready for the challenge of leading a team to the NBA Finals.

“I think I’ve grown in the sense of being more prepared,” Tatum said. “Obviously, I was tired after every game and things like that, but my body has matured since my third season. I’m stronger, I take care of my body better, so I felt more prepared for each game. My body kept up.”

Butler, a six-time All-Star, has topped 30 points five times in 10 starts this postseason. He scored 32 points last Thursday to help put the Philadelphia 76ers away 99-90 in Game 6 of the conference semifinals.

Butler said keeping Tatum in check is crucial for the Heat.

“He’s one of the best in the game right now,” Butler said of Tatum. “As much attention as he draws on the offensive end — and then I think what’s really impressive is the way that he’s picked up his defensive intensity. You got to tip your hat to that and respect him. I think those are the guys that you want to go up against.”

The Heat will be without point guard Kyle Lowry (left hamstring) for the seventh time in the past nine games. P.J. Tucker (calf), Max Strus (hamstring), Gabe Vincent (hamstring) and Caleb Martin (ankle) are all questionable.

Boston listed point guard Marcus Smart as questionable after an MRI exam on Monday detected a right midfoot sprain. Smart was injured during Sunday’s game and is a game-time decision with lingering soreness as of Tuesday’s shootaround.

“He took a pretty bad fall, got bent up,” Celtics coach Ime Udoka said. “It’s pretty tender and sore right now. We’ll get him round-the-clock treatment.”

Udoka said big man Robert Williams III (left knee) is available to play Tuesday after a four-game absence. Williams wasn’t used on Sunday because Udoka didn’t want to tinker with the playing rotation in a Game 7.

The Celtics won two of the three regular-season matchups, including a 95-78 win in Miami on Nov. 4. Neither team feels those results matter.

“This is like a throwback series,” Spoelstra said. “If both teams are really on top of their games, this should be a series where neither team is scoring 130 points. Both teams hang their hats on rock-solid team defense. …

“We were the two best teams in the East most of the season and it’s fitting that we’re moving into the conference finals.”
