Report: Bengals reach deal with 1st-round pick Daxton Hill

The Cincinnati Bengals agreed to terms on a four-year rookie contract with first-round draft pick Daxton Hill, NFL Network reported on Wednesday.

Hill, a safety out of Michigan, was selected by the Bengals with the 31st overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.

A first-team All-Big Ten selection, Hill recorded 69 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions and 11 passes defensed in 14 games last season.

Hill collected 151 tackles, four interceptions and three fumble recoveries in 33 career games with the Wolverines.

Hand not ready, Bryson DeChambeau withdraws from PGA Championship

0

Bryson DeChambeau withdrew from the PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club on Wednesday after attempting to return from a hand injury.

DeChambeau was in Tulsa early in the week to gauge his readiness to participate in the PGA Tour’s second major of the season. The 28-year-old, who won the 2020 US Open at Winged Foot, missed the cut at the Masters with a 12-over through 36 holes.

This week DeChambeau took the course with his left hand and wrist heavily bandaged.

He underwent surgery on his left wrist on April 14 to repair a fracture of the hamate bone. One month later, he posted a video of his full swing — seemingly at full force — hitting golf balls into a net in his back yard.

Denny McCarthy replaces DeChambeau in the field at the 2022 PGA Championship. McCarthy joins the 8:49 a.m. ET tee time with Max Homa and Tyrrell Hatton starting on the 10th tee.

DeChambeau, the World No. 22-ranked golfer, said “strength and stamina in his left hand isn’t where he wants it” Golf Channel said Wednesday.

Celtics aim to make Heat’s Jimmy Butler less ‘comfortable’

Game 1 hero Jimmy Butler isn’t much for rating his performance or basking in the achievement, even when topping the 40-point mark.

However, Butler will be out to match a stellar all-around effort in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals Thursday night when his Miami Heat host the Boston Celtics.

Butler scored 41 points and also contributed nine rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocked shots to help Miami overcome a 13-point, second-quarter deficit en route to a 118-107 victory on Tuesday.

It was Butler’s fifth 40-point performance in the playoffs during his three seasons with the Heat — only franchise icon Dwyane Wade (seven) has more — but he downplayed talk that he stepped up to meet the moment.

“Probably because I don’t care if it’s a big stage or a little stage or who is watching,” Butler said. “I do what I do for my family, for my people, for my organization and for my teammates. That’s it. Doesn’t matter if it’s a big stage, home or away. I know why I do what I do.”

Boston didn’t know how to stop him, especially when Butler scored 17 points in the third quarter that began with a 22-2 Miami run and closed with a 17-3 burst.

The Celtics’ 62-54 halftime lead evaporated and the team trailed 93-76 entering the final stanza.

Boston guard Jaylen Brown said his club needs to rattle Butler in Game 2.

“He’s comfortable,” Brown said. “He’s very comfortable right now, and we’ve got to do a better job of breaking that rhythm that he’s in. That’s it. We’ve got to take the challenge.”

Brown pointed out that it was “uncharacteristic” of the Celtics to allow 118 points.

Part of the problem was NBA Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart (right foot) sat out the contest and big man Al Horford (COVID-19 protocol) was a late scratch. Smart is probable to return Thursday night while Horford (listed as doubtful) realistically could return for Saturday’s Game 3 in Boston.

Also, Celtics coach Ime Udoka missed Wednesday’s off-day media session due to a non-COVID illness.

While the loss of Smart and Horford hurt, the Celtics unraveled in the third quarter when they were outscored 39-14 and made just 2 of 15 field-goal attempts with eight turnovers.

Boston star Jayson Tatum committed six of his seven turnovers in the stanza.

“I’ll be the first one to say I’ll take the blame for that,” Tatum said. “I’ve got to lead better. I’ve got to play better, especially in those moments. I’m just looking forward to responding next game.”

Celtics guard Payton Pritchard downplayed the ball-protection issues on a night in which Tatum contributed 29 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals.

“It’s not an issue. Players can make mistakes,” Pritchard said. “We’ll come back next game, be ready for it. We’ll make adjustments and be ready to go.”

With Boston surely gearing adjustments toward slowing Butler, the Heat will be aiming to give their star some help in Game 2. Tyler Herro scored 18 points off the bench and unheralded starter Gabe Vincent added 17 points. No other Heat player scored more than 11.

Of course, Butler has three 40-point outings this postseason so perhaps a Game 2 repeat is possible.

“You can’t expect him to get 40,” veteran forward P.J. Tucker said. “He’s consistently being aggressive, whether he’s making shots, missing shots, whatever the case is, and that puts everybody else in position to be able to rebound and get open shots with people helping and him making plays for everybody else. It lifts the level of our team and it lifts the play of everybody.”

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra won’t be surprised if there is another Butler splurge in Game 2.

“Jimmy Butler is an elite competitor,” Spoelstra said. “There are a lot of guys in this league playing basketball; he’s competing to win. That’s a totally different thing, and he does that as well as anybody in this league.”

Miami has ruled out Kyle Lowry (left hamstring) for Game 2. He has missed seven of the past nine games.

Billionaire Investor Mike Novogratz Shares Views on LUNA and UST Fiasco

0

Mike Novogratz, billionaire investor and Galaxy Digital CEO, published a post about the recent Terra fiasco. Novogratz and Galaxy Digital were big believers in the Terra ecosystem, viewing it as “an example of crypto finding a real-world use case.” Novogratz, who even got a LUNA-themed tattoo on his arm, posted a tweet regarding Terra LUNA and UST fallout, resulting in a $40 billion market value being destroyed in a very short amount of time.
Highlighting the heart-wrenching stories of retail investors who lost their savings, Novogratz emphasized the importance for less experienced market participants to risk what they are comfortable losing, advising an allocation of 1%-5% of total assets to the space. Novogratz said that he is still a firm believer in the crypto, but doesn’t think that the bottom is in yet.

Hurricanes D Jaccob Slavin leads Lady Byng finalists

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin looks to become the first repeat winner of the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in more than a decade.

Slavin, Winnipeg Jets forward Kyle Connor and Minnesota Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon were named the three finalists Wednesday for the 2021-22 award.

The Lady Byng is presented annually to the player who combines sportsmanship and fair play in conjunction with a high skill level. Ballots are submitted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Martin St. Louis was the last player to claim the Lady Byng in back-to-back seasons in 2009-10 and 2010-11.

The winners of the 2022 NHL Awards will be revealed during the Stanley Cup semifinals and Stanley Cup Final, with exact dates and times to be announced.

Slavin, 28, averaged a team-high 23:32 in ice time for a Carolina defense that surrendered a league-low 202 goals en route to the franchise’s first William M. Jennings Trophy. Slavin set career highs in assists (38) and points (42) and was assessed only five minor penalties in 79 games.

Connor, 25, is a first-time Lady Byng finalist who established career highs in goals (47), assists (46) and points (93) in 79 games. He finished fourth among NHL forwards in average time on ice (21:47) but received only four penalty minutes — fewest among the league’s top 100 scorers.

Spurgeon, 32, was runner-up for the award last season. The Wild captain had 40 points (10 goals, 30 assists) in 65 games and led Minnesota to the best record in franchise history (53-22-7, 113 points). He received just five minor penalties, his seventh time in 12 seasons with 10 or fewer PIM.

Eagles, CB James Bradberry reach 1-year deal

Pro Bowl cornerback James Bradberry agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday.

The Eagles did not divulge financial terms of the deal, however multiple media outlets reported it was worth $10 million.

Bradberry was released in a cost-cutting move by the NFC East rival New York Giants on May 9. The Giants were unable to find a trade partner for Bradberry, who signed a three-year, $43.5 million deal with the Giants in March 2020.

Bradberry, 28, likely will be paired opposite four-time Pro Bowl selection Darius Slay in Philadelphia.

Bradberry recorded a career-high four interceptions in 17 games (16 starts) in 2021 for the Giants. He had also had 17 passes defensed to go with two fumble recoveries.

He made the Pro Bowl after the 2020 season.

Bradberry has 15 career interceptions and 82 passes defensed in 92 career games (91 starts) for the Carolina Panthers (2016-19) and Giants. The Panthers selected Bradberry in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Applied Materials Review by Berenberg Bank

0

Berenberg Bank analysts provided their views on Applied Materials, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMAT), maintaining their buy rating and $205 price target, and noting that the gradual easing of the ongoing supply chain and logistics disruption will help lift investor sentiment.
According to the analysts, the company has the widest range of products of the semi equipment players, and therefore tracks the cycle closely. Investors are concerned and expect a downturn, but the analysts believe that the supply chain challenges are delaying it.
The analysts think that all of the semi equipment companies have a large backlog due to be shipped over the coming year and do not believe the technology shrinkage roadmap will have to be paused, as leading-edge-chip demand remains high and the utilization rate of leading-edge capacity remains tight.
The analysts expect legacy-edge node investment to continue because of underinvestment over the past few years, while both Europe and China are building up their local semi-manufacturing facility.

NOTES
–Mickelson is only the third defending PGA champion in the past 75 years not to defend his title while he continues an extended break from the PGA Tour.
–Tiger Woods won the last time the event was held at Southern Hills in 2007. The course underwent a significant renovation led by Gil Hanse in 2018-19. Southern Hills played host to the 2021 Senior PGA Championship and was chosen as this year’s venue after the PGA of America pulled it from Trump Bedminster. The course’s two par-5 holes will each play longer than 630 yards this week.
–Woods will tee it up for just the second time since severely injuring his leg in a February 2021 car accident. The 15-time major champion is a four-time winner of the Wanamaker Trophy.
–Bryson DeChambeau is in the field after having taken a break since the Masters to heal from a wrist injury.
–The field also includes 20 PGA of America club pros who earned spots via qualifiers.
–Americans have won the past six PGA Championships.

BEST BETS
–Scottie Scheffler (+1200 at BetMGM) has won four of his past seven starts, including the Masters, and won the 2015 Big 12 Conference Championship at Southern Hills. He shot a 64 in a recent practice round and called it one of his favorite courses. Scheffler is second at the sportsbook with 8.7 percent of the winning tickets backing him while he leads with 14.9 percent of the handle.
Scheffler is also +1200 at DraftKings, where he has been backed by 11 and 14 percent of the action, respectively. He is being offered at +1100 at BetRivers, where he accounts for 11.4 percent of the bets 15.8 percent of the handle – more than twice as much as any other player in the field.
–Jon Rahm (+1200) leads the tour in strokes gained tee-to-green, off-the-tee and in greens in regulation this season. He’s coming off a win in his last start in Mexico.
–Rory McIlroy (+1600) had not played Southern Hills before this week. Part of his preparation for the event was watching flyover videos. A two-time PGA champion, McIlroy is seeking his first major title since 2014.
–Justin Thomas (+1600) won his lone major at this event five years ago. However, he has been backed by a modest 4.3 percent of the bets and 4.0 percent of the handle at BetMGM. Thomas has been supported by 3.0 percent of the action in both markets at +1800 at DraftKings and is eighth in the field with 3.9 percent of the handle backing him at +1400 at BetRivers.
–Collin Morikawa (+2000) won in 2020 among two wins and five top-10s in nine career Majors. The largest single bet at BetRivers has been a $3,405 wager at -400 for Morikawa to make the cut.
–Jordan Spieth (+2000) makes another attempt to complete the career Grand Slam while coming off a runner-up finish at the Byron Nelson. He leads with 8.8 percent of the winning tickets at BetMGM and is second with 11.8 percent of the handle while his odds have lengthened after opening at +1600.
Spieth is also second with 7.6 percent of the handle at +1800 at BetRivers. One bettor at the sportsbook wagered $2,000 on Spieth at -151 to card a better first-round score than Woods.
–Cameron Smith (+2200) is attempting to become the first player to win the Players and a major in the same year since Martin Kaymer (U.S. Open) in 2014. He is also +2200 at BetRivers while drawing 6.9 percent of the handle.
–Brooks Koepka (+4000) withdrew from last week’s event but is a two-time PGA champion who has not missed the cut in nine previous starts.
–Daniel Berger had brought in the largest outright winner bet as of Wednesday afternoon at BetRivers, where there was a $1,780 wager at +5500.
–Woods is a +6600 longshot as he enters the tournament ranked 818th in the world. He has been backed by 6.0 percent of the bets and 5.6 percent of the handle at BetMGM, making him the biggest potential liability in the history of the sportsbook. Woods is a +7000 longshot at BetRivers, where he is fourth with 5.2 percent of the handle backing him.

New US national team CBA: Men, women receive equal World Cup bonuses

A new collective bargaining agreement for the United States men’s and women’s national soccer teams with U.S. Soccer includes equal splits of World Cup bonuses.

The U.S. Women’s National Team Players Association pushed for modifications regarding equal pay and incentives around marquee events such as the World Cup while operating on an expired CBA. The patchwork extension between the union and U.S. Soccer now ends June 1, when the new CBA with the men’s and women’s national teams goes into effect.

Also included in the deal are revenue sharing agreements between the unions, the elimination of the women’s-only contract structure that guaranteed only a small number of player salaries and female-specific health coverage options.

“The ability to do that has come a lot from the strength that the NWSL has gained in the past few years,” said Midge Purce, a member of the union negotiating team and USWNT forward.

“We have a strong enough league here at home where we can depend on those salaries a little bit more and leave a little more risk up to the national team. And I think that’s really helped free up that risk.”

U.S. Soccer Federation president Cindy Parlow Cone made it her goal to address equal pay in any new agreement. She told ESPN the difference was agreement between the unions to work together and leverage their collective strength rather than a tug of war between the teams.

“And I’ll be honest, there were days that I didn’t think we were going to get it across the line,” Cone said in the ESPN interview. “But we are here, and I’m just so incredibly proud of what we have accomplished and what it is going to mean, not only for the game here in the U.S. but globally.”

The 2022 World Cup bonus pool was set at $400 million.

The USNT unions would receive 90 percent of the FIFA bonuses paid at the 2022 and 2023 World Cups and 80 percent of the bonuses at the 2026 and 2027 editions, per the new agreement. All of the funds paid out from those bonus pools will be split evenly among the two national teams.
