TSM clinches spot in Grand Final at ESL One Stockholm

TSM pulled off a comeback, three-map victory Saturday to claim the first berth in the Grand Final at ESL One Stockholm in Sweden.

In moving one win away from earning the event’s $200,000 grand prize, TSM dropped the opening map but rallied in a 2-1 decision over Tundra Esports to take the upper-bracket final.

In lower-bracket play, OG twice fought off elimination in a pair of 2-0 sweeps — first defeating Thunder Awaken 2-0 in a quarterfinal match, then dispatching Gaimin Gladiators 2-0 in the semifinals.

OG advances to Sunday’s lower-bracket final against Tundra, with the winner to face off against TSM in Sunday’s Grand Final.

Tundra grabbed the early lead in the upper final by taking the first map in 45 minutes on red, as Leon “Nine” Kirilin of Germany topped Tundra with 10 kills. But TSM battled back to win the next two maps on green in 45 and 31 minutes, respectively.

Czech Jonas “SabeRLight-” Volek averaged a 9.0-7.7-17.0 kills-deaths-assists ratio for TSM in the match, including 18 kills in the pivotal second map.

OG first ousted Thunder Awaken by winning in 28 minutes on green, then 33 minutes on red. Ukraine’s Artem “Yuragi” Golubiev led a balanced OG attack with an average of 9.5-0.5-11.5 in kills-deaths-assists.

In the lower final, OG again swept by beating the Gladiators, winning in 33 minutes on red and 36 minutes on green. OG has only lost one map in reeling off four straight lower-bracket victories.

Ammar “AMMAR-THE-F” Al-Assaf of Jordan dominated for OG. In the opening map, ATF posted 12 kills and 10 assists without a death. In the clincher, he recorded a whopping 21 kills with 11 assists, dying just once.

All playoff matches are best-of-three until Sunday’s best-of-five Grand Final determines the winner of the Dota Pro Circuit season’s first major. The winners will earn a $200,000 grand prize.

Fourteen teams from around the world entered the season’s first major, beginning in two groups of seven in a round-robin Group Stage. All Group Stage matches were best-of-two. The top four teams in each group qualified for the upper bracket of the playoffs and the fifth- and sixth-place teams were slotted in the lower bracket.

Dota Pro Circuit removed Mind Games from the competition early in the Group Stage due to ongoing travel visa issues for multiple team members.

ESL One Stockholm prize pool, Dota Pro Circuit points:
1. TBD — $200,000, 680 points
2. TBD — $100,000, 610 points

LAFC bounce back to defeat Crew 2-0

0

Second-half substitutes Carlos Vela and Jose Cifuentes scored when Los Angeles FC rebounded from two straight losses with a 2-0 victory against the host Columbus Crew on Saturday.

Vela in the 62nd minute and Cifuentes 11 minutes later helped LAFC (8-3-2, 26 points) avoid their first three-game losing streak since September 2019.

Maxime Crepeau made three saves for his fourth shutout as the Crew (3-5-4, 13 points) was blanked for the sixth time.

Columbus is 1-5-3 in the past nine games with back-to-back 2-0 losses.

Vela, who did not start after playing in the 2-1 home loss to Austin FC on Wednesday, entered to start the second 45 minutes and scored his sixth goal of the season for the 1-0 lead after the Crew had a goal disallowed for being offside four minutes earlier.

He took advantage of a deflection off Columbus midfielder Darlington Nagbe and outraced Josh Williams for possession in full stride at the top of the box.

The Crew gifted the next goal as goalkeeper Eloy Room’s goal kick was intercepted by Cifuentes, who came on the 61st minute, and he dribbled around several Crew and clinically finished his third goal.

The start of the match was delayed 2 hours and 47 minutes because of inclement weather. Only 2:34 was played before play was stopped again for another 70 minutes.

Immediately upon the restart, the Crew pounced on their first scoring opportunity through a combination with Lucas Zelarayan passing to Steven Moreira, who sent a through ball to James Igbekeme but his shot from a difficult angle was saved by Crepeau.

Igbekeme was involved in another try in the 22nd. He split the defense to find an open Yaw Yeboah for a goal only to have the play called offside.

The Crew had another score taken off the board in the 58th minute following a video review that ruled Yeboah was offside before his shot from 15 yards.

D-backs overcome 4-run deficit, beat Cubs in 10

Daulton Varsho delivered a two-run double in the 10th, and scored on the same play, as the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks overcame a four-run deficit to beat the Chicago Cubs for a third consecutive day, 7-6 on Saturday.

Arizona managed one hit and struck out in nine of its 18 plate appearances against Chicago starter Justin Steele through the five innings he worked. However, once Steele departed with a 4-0 lead, the Diamondbacks’ bats woke up.

Chicago native Alek Thomas delivered an RBI single in the seventh. Then, Pavin Smith led off the eighth with a pinch-hit home run off Scott Effross. With two outs later in the inning, Jake McCarthy (three hits) recorded a run-scoring double and Varsho followed with an RBI single to tie the game.

The Diamondbacks loaded the bases against David Robertson with nobody out in the ninth, but failed to score. However, they came through in the 10th against Rowan Wick (1-1). Varsho’s third hit lined off the right-field wall, scoring two. Never completely stopping on the bases, Varsho came home on Andrelton Simmons’ throwing error.

A run-scoring single from Simmons and Jonathan Villar’s RBI ground-rule double in the 10th off the Diamondbacks’ Mark Melancon made things interesting, but he fanned Seiya Suzuki for his ninth save.

Arizona’s Madison Bumgarner gave up back-to-back homers to Frank Schwindel and Patrick Wisdom in the second, then an RBI double to Suzuki and a run-scoring single to Yan Gomes in the third. However, Bumgarner lasted seven innings, and struck out seven without a walk for Arizona, which entered this four-game set losers of six straight.

Ian Kennedy (3-2) got the win for Arizona, which secured its first winning road series over the Cubs since 2017. Chicago, meanwhile, has lost four in a row after winning four straight. Each defeat has come at home, where the Cubs are 6-15.

Arizona’s Josh Rojas, who homered three times Friday, exited after being hit on the hand with a pitch that he swung at (he later struck out) in the first inning. Meanwhile, Chicago star Willson Contreras left with hamstring tightness after running the bases in the third.

The game started following a 95-minute rain delay.

Penguins sign Bryan Rust to six-year extension

The Pittsburgh Penguins locked in one of their top impending free agents, agreeing to terms with forward Bryan Rust on a $30.75 million deal that keeps him in Pittsburgh for the next six years, general manager Ron Hextall announced Saturday.

“Bryan exemplifies what it means to be a Pittsburgh Penguin,” said Hextall. “Since being drafted by Pittsburgh, he has developed into a versatile player and leader on our team, capable of contributing in any situation. His leadership qualities and experience as a two-time Stanley Cup champion is an important piece of our team.”

Rust was drafted by the Penguins in 2010 and has played his entire professional career with the team, including acting as a key player during the Penguins’ back-to-back Stanley Cup runs in 2016 and 2017.

The contract extension comes after Rust finished up a career season, notching 24 goals and a career-high 34 assists in 60 games. The 30-year-old Pontiac, Michigan, native also had career highs this past season with nine power-play goals and 21 power-play points.

Consistency has been key for Rust, especially over the past three seasons during which Rust has recorded 156 points in 171 games, good for a 0.91 points-per-game average that is fourth-best on the Penguins since 2019-2020.

Mito Pereira leads by 3 shots entering final round at Southern Hills

0

There’s bound to be pressure for Chile’s Mito Pereira during Sunday’s final round of the PGA Championship.

But being in this position is something he wants.

“Of course, I don’t have any experience playing in the final pairing in a major, but I guess I worked for it my whole life basically,” Pereira said.

Pereira birdied three of the final six holes of the third round for a 1-under-par 69 and a three-shot lead as golfers contended with windy and cool conditions Saturday at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

Pereira is at 9-under 201 going into Sunday.

Second-round leader Will Zalatoris and England’s Matt Fitzpatrick share second place at 6 under, and Cameron Young is in fourth at 5 under. Fitzpatrick and Young posted 67s, while Zalatoris shot 73.

Tiger Woods shot 9-over 79 and withdrew. It’s the first time Woods has withdrawn from a major as a professional, though the announcement shortly after all golfers finished the round wasn’t unexpected. A few hours earlier, he said he was sore and would assess his situation.

Zalatoris recovered from a horrid opening stretch when he carded bogeys on four of the first seven holes.

Pereira, who played collegiately for Texas Tech, has never won on the PGA Tour and has three top-10 finishes this season in 27 tournaments.

Pereira was a shot behind Zalatoris when the round began, but he moved to the top right away. He was 2 under for the round through five holes, but then he recorded four bogeys before his next birdie came at No. 13.

“Never take anything for granted, I was playing so good,” Pereira said. “I wasn’t really nervous, just a couple of bad shots. You’ve just got to really keep your head in the moment.”

Young, who benefitted from an eagle on No. 17, and Zalatoris are former college teammates at Wake Forest. Fitzpatrick is the older brother of current Wake Forest golfer Alex Fitzpatrick.

“I was really pleased with the round,” Fitzpatrick said after birdies on the last two holes. “I feel I’ve put myself in a lot of winning positions in Europe before and I’ve come out with some good results.”

Mexico’s Abraham Ancer (70) is fifth at 4 under and Ireland’s Seamus Power (67), who rolled in four birdie putts in his last seven holes, holds sixth place at 3 under.

“I noticed a massive difference, obviously less guys on the course, and the greens are much smoother,” Power said. “For me, I was able to take advantage, make a few extra putts, and the rest of it was figuring out, like I said, the kind of whole new golf course, whole new targets.”

Bubba Watson followed Friday’s 63 with 73, putting him tied for seventh with Stewart Cink (71) and Justin Thomas (74) at 2 under. Watson made an early charge before playing the backside in 4 over.

First-round leader Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland shot 74 and is even for the tournament and tied for 17th place.

Webb Simpson, another Wake Forest alum, shot 65 for the best score of Saturday’s round. That moved him to 1 under and into a seven-way tie for 10th place.

“I didn’t expect it on a day like today to get a nice few under in a short amount of time, but I’ll take it,” said Simpson, who finished his round before some golfers began their third rounds.

Woods’ 79 was his highest score in a round in PGA Championship play, slipping to 12-over 222 for the tournament and tied for 76th place. Two of his shots ended up in the water.

“I didn’t do anything right,” Woods said. “I didn’t hit many good shots. Consequently, I ended up with a pretty high score.”

Jimmy Butler (knee) ruled out for remainder of G3

Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler was ruled out for the second half of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Boston Celtics due to right knee inflammation.

Butler scored eight points in 20 first-half minutes but Victor Oladipo started in his place in the third quarter. The Heat subsequently announced Butler was done for the night.

Just 63 seconds into the third quarter, Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart was helped off the court after sustaining a sprained right ankle.

Smart was injured while competing for a rebound with Miami’s Kyle Lowry. Smart’s ankle rolled on the floor and Lowry landed on it. Smart grabbed for the ankle and screamed loudly.

Smart had seven points, three assists and two rebounds before heading back for treatment. He returned to the bench area with 7:01 left in the third quarter and re-entered the contest nine seconds later.

Boston forward Jayson Tatum sustained an apparent right shoulder injury with 5:33 left in the fourth quarter. Tatum went to the locker room for evaluation.

Tatum was injured while Oladipo was stealing the ball. He remained on the court as play continued and the Celtics eventually called timeout with 5:18 left. He ended up returning to the game.

Miami led 62-47 at the break. The best-of-seven series is tied at one game apiece.

Tiger Woods WDs from final round at PGA Championship

0

Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the PGA Championship after shooting a 9-over-par 79 in Saturday’s third round in Tulsa, Okla.

It marked the first WD in Woods’ professional career.

Woods, 46, shot 1-under-par over the final five holes Saturday to avoid recording a score in the 80s for the third time in a major. Still, it was his worst round ever at a PGA Championship.

It was a gritty effort at the end for Woods, who started the day at 3-over 143 and finished at 12 over and stood 21 strokes out of the lead when his third round ended at Southern Hills Country Club.

Clearly struggling to make it through 18 holes on his rebuilt right leg, Woods and his team declined an on-camera interview with CBS Sports following the round. Instead, Woods and his reps told the CBS television crew that he was sore.

On Friday, Woods made the cut at a major for the second time in two tries since nearly losing his right leg 15 months ago in a devastating single-car crash in Southern California. He shot a 1-under-par 69 on Friday to sneak in under the cut line.

In the third round, he started with a par but found the water on No. 2 for a bogey. His real troubles began on the par-3 No. 6, when his tee shot landed in the water again, his shot from the drop area found the rough to the left of the green, and he hit his pitch sort of the green. After hitting a chip shot to about two feet from the cup, he putted out for a triple-bogey 6.

From there, Woods’ round unraveled on a chilly morning. He bogeyed holes 7 and 9 to leave him with a 41 on the front nine.

The bogey on the par-4 No. 9 was the first of five straight bogeys for Woods, a four-time PGA Championship winner. He won at Southern Hills in 2007, the most recent time the tournament was played at the course.

Woods never before had carded five straight bogeys at a major championship.

The bright spot of Woods’ day came on the 413-yard, par-4 15th. Woods flashed his first smile of the day when he drained a 36-foot putt for his only birdie on the round.

Woods’ worst-ever round in a major championship came in 2002, when he shot an 81 in the third round at The Open Championship at Muirfield — the same year in which he won the Masters and the U.S. Open.

He shot an 80 in the first round of the U.S. Open in 2015 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.

Bo Bichette’s two homers enough to get Blue Jays past Reds

Bo Bichette hit two home runs and right-hander Alek Manoah went eight innings as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Cincinnati Reds 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Bichette’s second home run of the game was a two-run blast against Luis Cessa (2-1) in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie.

Manoah (5-1) allowed one run and seven hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Manoah could be seen in the dugout pleading to pitch the ninth inning, but closer Jordan Romano was called on instead. Romano struck out the side to earn his 14th save and his second of the three-game series.

Cincinnati right-hander Hunter Greene allowed one run, four hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out six in his first start since pitching 7 1/3 innings last Sunday and combined to hold Pittsburgh without a hit, only to lose 1-0 to the Pirates.

Cincinnati scored its only run in the fourth inning on Joey Votto’s RBI double to score Tyler Naquin.

Bichette led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to left field on a Greene slider. It was the first hit of the game against Greene, who then pitched around two singles in the fifth inning.

Toronto threatened again in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs before Matt Chapman struck out to end the threat. Greene gave up one run on four hits over six innings with two walks and six strikeouts.

The Reds’ Tyler Stephenson led off the seventh with a double and moved to third on a groundout before Colin Moran struck out and Alejo Lopez grounded out.

Cessa replaced Greene in the bottom of the seventh. The Blue Jays’ Raimel Tapia singled with one out and took third when George Springer was thrown out trying to extend his hit into a double. Bichette followed with a two-run home run, his sixth of the season.

The Reds’ Jeff Hoffman, a first-round draft pick by the Blue Jays in 2014, pitched around a walk in the bottom of the eighth.

Sam Girard suffers broken sternum; Jordan Binnington also injured in G3

Colorado defenseman Sam Girard suffered a broken sternum and is out for the remainder of the playoffs, Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said after the Avs’ 5-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night.

Girard suffered the injury early in the first period when Blues forward Ivan Barbashev drove him into the end boards with a big hit. Girard was taken to a local hospital in St. Louis for further evaluation.

No penalty was assessed on the play. Bednar called the hit a legal check.

Girard had three points (one goal, two assists) in six postseason games.

Blues goalie Jordan Binnington was knocked out 6:45 into the game when Avalanche forward Nazem Kadri and Blues blueliner Calle Rosen crashed into him in the net. It appeared to be a lower-body injury. Binnington tried some agility drills but was not able to continue.

No penalty was assessed on the play.

Ville Husso replaced Binnington and finished with 19 saves.

The Avs took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinals.
