Veronica Burton’s 30 points fuel Valkyries’ victory over Mystics

The Washington Mystics’ late surge was not enough as Veronica Burton scored a career-high 30 points to lead the visiting Golden State Valkyries to an 88-83 win on Wednesday night.

Burton shot 6-for-9 on 3-point attempts while adding seven rebounds and seven assists for the Valkyries (17-15). Cecilia Zandalasini added her own career high with 20 points – 14 in the first half — on 6-of-8 shooting from deep while Tiffany Hayes added 14 points.

The Valkries also neutralized All-Star rookie Sonia Citron for three quarters. Citron entered the fourth quarter with only two points, but scored 13 over the final 10 minutes to fuel the Mystics’ rally. Washington trailed by 18 entering the fourth quarter, but got as close as 86-83 with 54 seconds to play.

Washington (14-18) scored the first basket of the night, but it was all Golden State from there. The Valkyries went on a 12-point run to end the first quarter for a 30-12 lead. That lead extended to 39-14 on Zandalasini’s stepback 3-pointer with eight minutes left in the first half.

To start the second half, Washington went on a 15-6 run to cut the lead down to single digits, but the Valkyries responded. With seven minutes remaining in the game, Golden State pushed the lead back up to over 20 points.

Golden State finished 15 of 32 on 3-pointers compared to Washington’s 7 for 24 showing.

Sug Sutton posted 15 points and 7 assists for the Mystics while rookie Kiki Iriafen had her 10th double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Engstler was 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and led all bench players with 13 points.

Washington played without starting forward Shakira Austin, who missed the game with left leg soreness. In Austin’s place, veteran Stefanie Dolson contributed five points but only one rebound.

The win is the third in a row for the Valkyries and third this season over the Mystics in the last regular season matchup between the two sides.

PGA News: Keegan Bradley considers using Ryder Cup team captain’s pick on himself

0

In what could be a first for a pre-tournament press conference, Keegan Bradley was asked only briefly on Wednesday about being defending champion of the BMW Championship, and about the course, Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.

Mostly, Bradley talked about his role as captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team, the September event’s course, Bethpage Black, and if he would use a captain’s pick on the current No. 10 player in the Ryder Cup standings.

That player is Bradley, making for a compelling narrative and much speculation as the FedEx Cup playoffs continue this week and lead to the Tour Championship.

The top six players in the Ryder Cup points standings after this week’s tournament will automatically qualify for the squad that faces Team Europe on Sept. 26-28 in Farmingdale, N.Y. Scottie Scheffler, J.J. Spaun and Xander Schaufele have locked up three spots.

Justin Thomas at No. 7, Collin Morikawa and Ben Griffin currently have more points than Bradley, who if he doesn’t automatically qualify, could use one of six captain’s picks on himself after the Tour Championship.

“I’ve been saying all year, you can’t expect to be on the team unless you’re in the top six,” said Bradley, 39. “My goal is to go out there, whether I was Ryder Cup captain or not this week, and play well and play well next week at the Tour Championship as well.

“There’s definitely a lot more on my plate here these next couple of weeks. The Ryder Cup has always been so far away, and now it’s right there. Things are definitely amping up. I still have a lot to prove just as well as everyone around me on the list.”

It’s not common for the team captain to also play. Arnold Palmer was the last playing captain in the biennial contest — in 1963.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, the No. 2 player in the world, said Wednesday that he considers Bradley one of the United States’ 12 best players. But McIlroy also believes there’s too much on the plate — as Bradley might say — of a Ryder Cup team captain during the event to add playing duties.

“(McIlroy) might be right,” Bradley said. “We don’t know. No one knows. Yeah, like everybody’s telling me to start the year that a player can’t be captain and have a good year. For me, I feel like this is one of my best years that I’ve ever had.”

Bradley is currently No. 14 in the FedEx Cup standings and No. 12 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He has eight career wins on the PGA Tour, including the 2024 BMW Championship and this year at the Travelers Championship on June 22. He also had five top-10 finishes and made 17 of 19 cuts.

He has made a habit in his career of asking others for advice who have gone through an experience such as playing in a major, playing the last tee time on Sunday or facing the media. But for this question, no one has personal experience.

“I certainly have a lot of concerns, as well as everybody else, but I have the most incredible vice captains, including Jim Furyk, who’s been on these teams and been captain a bunch of times,” Bradley said. “Quite frankly, I’ve been leaning on them more than any other captain ever anyways, even if I’m not playing.

“We’re ready for this if it happens. I’m not sure it’s going to. I can truly sit here right now and say I don’t know what’s going to happen. I have to look at myself just like any other player trying to make the team. I’m 10th in points right now, and that’s not sixth.”

He has gratitude for his peers’ support no matter his decision, including McIlroy and World No. 1 Scheffler, who said on Wednesday, “I think he’s a guy we’d all love to have on the team. The intensity that he’s brought as a captain — I mean, he has definitely exceeded my expectations as far as a captain. He’s done a great job.”

Rickie Fowler and Patrick Cantlay also joined the chorus of supporting Bradley as a playing captain.

“I can tell you, honestly, it means the world to me to hear that. I haven’t ever really felt that in my career,” Bradley said. “It’s really touching. It really means a lot. I really have — the thing I’ve enjoyed most is getting to know these guys better. I was really a closed-off player for most of my career.

“Getting to know the guys more and getting to learn who they are, and then I think as a golfer, or as an athlete or a businessman, whatever it is, when you feel the respect of your peers, that’s the ultimate. To hear that from two players of that caliber really means a lot.”

Sun withstand Sky’s second-half rally to snap losing skid

Leila Lacan scored 17 points and Tina Charles added 15 in her return from a one-game absence, lifting the Connecticut Sun to a 71-62 victory over the Chicago Sky on Wednesday in Uncasville, Conn.

Marina Mabrey had 10 points and rookie Aneesah Morrow collected nine points and nine rebounds for the Sun (6-26), who saw their 21-point lead whittled down to four before holding on to snap a five-game losing skid. They also avenged a 78-66 setback to the Sky on June 15.

Chicago’s Kamilla Cardoso scored a game-high 24 points and tallied nine rebounds and Elizabeth Williams added 12 and 15, respectively.

Rachel Banham sank three 3-pointers to highlight her 10-point performance for the Sky (8-24), who committed 19 turnovers en route to losing for the 11th time of their last 12 games.

Chicago played without leading scorer/rebounder Angel Reese for the sixth straight game due to a back injury.

Charles, who sat out her team’s previous game for rest purposes, made a layup and rookie Saniya Rivers drained a mid-range jumper to push Connecticut’s lead to 55-34 with 4:28 remaining in the third quarter.

But in the fourth, Kia Nurse sank a 3-pointer as Chicago scored 11 straight points to trim its deficit to four points at 60-56 with 5:31 left. Charles halted the momentum with a 3-pointer and joined Rivers in converting an 18-foot jumper.

The Sky moved back within five at 67-62 with 2:32 to play, but Rivers made a free throw and Lacan added a driving layup.

Tempers flared with 6:35 remaining in the second quarter after Connecticut’s Bria Hartley pushed Chicago’s Rebecca Allen to the floor on a missed 3-point attempt. Allen responded by clutching Hartley’s jersey, a move that drew Sky teammate Ariel Atkins into the fray — although she inadvertently made contact with an official. Allen and Hartley were whistled for matching technical fouls and joined Atkins in being ejected from the contest.

The sequence seemed to light a fire under the Sun, who scored 15 of the next 22 points to seize a 42-28 lead at halftime. Olivia Nelson-Ododa scored six points in that sequence.

TOP 30 BUBBLE: Sungjae Im (No. 25), Chris Gotterup (No. 26), Jacob Bridgeman (No. 27), Viktor Hovland (No. 28), Akshay Bhatia (No. 29), Lucas Glover (No. 30), Sam Stevens (No. 31), Ryan Gerard (No. 32), Daniel Berger (No. 33), Ryan Fox (No. 34), Taylor Pendrith (No. 35)

PROP PICKS
–Harris English to Beat Akshay Bhatia (-125 at DraftKings): English has three top-4 finishes in his past eight starts while rising to No. 8 in the world rankings. Bhatia did grab the first-round lead with a 62 last week, but the 69 he struggled to on Sunday is indicative of his inconsistency throughout tournaments.

–Justin Rose Top 20 Finish (+100 at BetRivers): After missing a pair of cuts, Rose has gone solo sixth, T16 and last week’s win over his past three starts. And remember, he only has to beat 29 other players in the 49-player field for this prop to pay out.

–Winning Score Under 264.5 (-140): Caves Creek has undergone significant changes since 2021, including adding about 60 yards in total length. Patrick Cantlay and Bryson DeChambeau both carded 261s here four years ago before waging an epic playoff. Our bet is multiple players finish under 265 this week.

2025 Prop Pick Record: 23-25

BEST BETS
–Scottie Scheffler (+225 at DraftKings) already is guaranteed to enter the Tour Championship as the FedExCup leader for the third consecutive year. He is the first player since Tom Weiskopf 52 years ago to finish in the top-eight in 12 consecutive tour starts. Scheffler’s odds have shortened from +280 as he leads the field with 20 percent of the total bets backing him to win.
–Rory McIlroy (+750) returns after skipping the first leg of the playoffs and makes his first start since a T7 at The Open Championship.
–Xander Schauffele (+1800) still is seeking his first victory of 2025 while also attempting to run his streak of reaching the Tour Championship to nine consecutive years.
–Tommy Fleetwood (+2000) again came agonizingly short of winning his first event on U.S. soil last weekend. He has five finishes of seventh or better in his past 10 starts.
–Patrick Cantlay (+2500) won at Caves Valley in 2021 but has not won since the BMW Championship the following year.
–Cameron Young (+2800) has a lot on the line this week as he builds his Ryder Cup case. He backed up a win at the Wyndham with a solo fifth last week, and Young leads the field with 15 percent of the total money backing him to win.

NOTES
–The top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings after this week will qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship. Every player in this week’s field has qualified for all signature events in 2026 along with the Players Championship. Those who qualify for the Tour Championship will earn a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour.
–Sepp Straka, who is fifth in the standings, withdrew on Monday to attend to a family matter. His agent said that Straka does intend to compete at the Tour Championship.
–The BMW Championship is the oldest non-major on the PGA Tour schedule, dating back to 1899.
–Future host sites of the event include Bellerive Country Club (St. Louis) in 2026 and Liberty National Golf Club (Jersey City, N.J.) in 2027.
–Nine players will make their BMW Championship debuts this week: Bridgeman, Brian Campbell, Fox, Gerard, Gotterup, Ben Griffin, Harry Hall, Andrew Novak and Stevens.

Report: Sun sale could be impacted by WNBA relocation fee

Looking for a greater say in the sale and relocation of the Connecticut Sun franchise, the WNBA is looking to impose an additional fee on the potential transaction, Front Office Sports reported Wednesday.

The Sun has matching $325-million bids to acquire the team from the Mohegan Tribe in Connecticut, according to reports, with both prospective owners intent on relocating the team to separate cities in New England.

The WNBA, though, is believed to be interested in Houston as the new home of the Sun.

Whatever ownership group and city are selected, the WNBA reportedly now wants an additional undisclosed relocation fee to accompany the deal.

A deal to buy the Sun was first agreed upon between Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca and the Mohegan Tribe in July. But WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert reportedly never presented the deal to the league’s board of governors for approval.

When the exclusive sale window expired, former Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry submitted his own offer, CT Insider reported.

Pagliuca is believed to be interested in moving the team to Boston, while Lasry is interested in Hartford, Conn., as the team’s new home.

According to FOS, the league would prefer that Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta purchase the team for $325 million, while also paying the undisclosed relocation fee to move the team to Texas’ largest city.

Fertitta’s bid for an expansion team was not accepted earlier this year when Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia were selected as future locations of teams after each agreed to a $250-million expansion fee.

PGA News: Elite field chasing precious points at BMW Championship

0

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Golf fans will be engrossed by two separate points chases at this week’s BMW Championship: the top 30 in the FedEx Cup race and the top six of the U.S. Ryder Cup standings.

When the penultimate leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs tees off Thursday at Caves Valley Golf Club, the Scottie Schefflers of the world will feel secure where they sit but a host of other big names will have everything to play for.

The Tour Championship will no longer utilize a staggered “starting strokes” format, so the race for second or third in the standings is de-prioritized this week. The top 30 players after the BMW will advance to next week’s season finale, their points wiped clean so that the winner after 72 holes claims both the tournament and the season-long cup.

For three-time FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy, it meant skipping last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship had no material effect on his second-place standing, though it ruffled a few feathers on tour. McIlroy on Wednesday suggested that the PGA Tour will need to consider making each playoff leg mandatory or convert to a true playoff system where regular-season points don’t carry weight.

“I mean, if you want to try to make it straight playoffs and elimination, I think that would be a good way to go,” McIlroy said. “You’re trying to balance a lot of different things. You’re trying to balance the competitive integrity of what the playoffs are, but you’re also trying to keep the media rights partners happy, you’re trying to keep the sponsors happy.”

Sitting in 30th place entering the week is Lucas Glover, with players like Scottish Open winner Chris Gotterup (26th) and Norway’s Viktor Hovland (28th) also on the bubble. Notable names hoping to leap from the 40s into the top 30 this week include England’s Matt Fitzpatrick (40th), Xander Schauffele (43rd), Australia’s Jason Day (44th) and Rickie Fowler (48th).

Also Sunday, the top six Americans in the Ryder Cup standings will automatically qualify for the team that will compete next month at Bethpage Black. Scheffler, J.J. Spaun and Schauffele are mathematically locked in, and Nos. 4-6 are currently Russell Henley, LIV Golf’s Bryson DeChambeau and Harris English.

A victory in Maryland would be enough to propel a number of contenders into that top six, such as No. 7 Justin Thomas, No. 8 Collin Morikawa, No. 9 Ben Griffin … or No. 10 Keegan Bradley, the U.S. captain.

If Bradley isn’t an automatic qualifier, he’ll have to consider using one of his six captain’s picks on himself, the subject of months of speculation.

“I’ve been saying all year, you can’t expect to be on the team unless you’re in the top six,” Bradley said. “My goal is to go out there, whether I was Ryder Cup captain or not this week, and play well and play well next week at the Tour Championship as well.

“I still have a lot to prove, just as well as everyone around me on the list.”

The best players on the PGA Tour will attack a Caves Valley venue that hosted this event in 2021 and yielded low numbers all week. At the time, Jordan Spieth said, “You have to really kind of screw up to make a bogey.”

Seven players finished the week 20 under or lower, and Patrick Cantlay had one of the best putting performances in recent tour history as he outlasted DeChambeau in a six-hole playoff. It was the apex of his career, as he received the nickname “Patty Ice” and won the FedEx Cup the next week.

“Yeah, I was surprised when I first heard (the nickname), and I kind of heard it on the weekend for the first time really that tournament,” Cantlay said. “I think it had to do with me making all those putts. Some of them I even surprised myself with how many putts I was making.”

With all this going on, it might be the rare week that the spotlight isn’t squarely on Scheffler. The World No. 1 is focused on working with substitute caddie Michael Cromie, who usually loops for Chris Kirk. Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, remains away to attend to a personal matter.

“I think there’s a lot of little stuff that caddies do that go kind of unnoticed throughout a round, and Michael is doing his best to try and figure those things out,” Scheffler said.

MLS News: Timbers acquire F Kristoffer Velde from Olympiacos

0

The Portland Timbers announced Wednesday that they have acquired Norwegian international Kristoffer Velde from Olympiacos FC of Greek Super League 1.

Velde, 25, arrives for a $5 million transfer fee, according to reports. The forward will occupy a Designated Player spot on the Timbers roster and is under contract through 2028 with an option for ‘29. He replaces Uruguay international forward Jonathan Rodriguez, whom the club lost to a season-ending knee injury in July.

The Haugesund, Norway, native joins a Portland attack led by All-Star midfielder David Da Costa and emerging 23-year-old winger Antony.

“We are excited to welcome Kristoffer Velde as the newest member of the Portland Timbers,” said general manager Ned Grabavoy. “It was a necessity in this transfer window to explore the market with the intent of adding a dangerous attacking threat, and Kristoffer gives us just that.

“His aggressive mindset to go at defenders and cause issues for opponents off the dribble should make our attack more balanced and powerful. We are eager for his debut in the green and gold.”

Velde joins Portland after spending the 2024-25 season with Olympiacos. He tallied six goals and two assists in 34 matches across all competitions, helping Olympiacos FC win the Super Ligue 1 Championship and the 2024-2025 Greek Cup.

Before playing for Olympiacos, Velde spent three seasons with top Polish side Lech Poznan (2022-2024), where he amassed 29 goals and 13 assists in 98 appearances and helped The Railwayman reach the 2021-2022 Polish Cup final and claim the 2021-2022 Ekstraklasa title.

“Velde is an exciting player with incredible determination, drive and self-belief,” Timbers head coach Phil Neville said. “His presence will spark our offense and implement a new level of creativity for the team. We believe he is going to be a major asset for us in our quest for success.”

WTA News: Magda Linette upsets No. 4 Jessica Pegula at Cincinnati Open

0

Poland’s Magda Linette, the 31st seed, knocked out fourth-seeded American Jessica Pegula 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3 in third-round action of the Cincinnati Open on Wednesday in Mason, Ohio.

The match was carried over from Tuesday due to inclement weather in the area. They resumed Wednesday afternoon at the onset of the third set. Up 4-3 in the deciding set, Linette broke Pegula and then served out the match to advance to the Round of 16.

It was the first time Linette won, or even took a set, off Pegula in four career matches.

“It feels so good. I had so many tough matches on this court,” Linette said. “I lost so many three-setters. I never really got close to getting a set off her before. To me, it means so much.

“She’s such an unbelievable ball-striker and competitor. Unbelievable person off the court. I just feel this day is really special that I got the chance to beat her.”

Pegula, who advanced to her first Grand Slam final in last year’s U.S. Open, failed to advance beyond the Round of 32 in the National Bank Open in Montreal as well as the Cincinnati Open — the two lead-up events to this year’s U.S. Open that begins Aug. 24.

No. 9 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan highlighted the evening action by rallying for a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 6 Madison Keys. Her reward is a quarterfinal matchup with top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka, as the reigning Cincinnati Open champion from Belarus converted five of seven break points to earn a 6-1, 7-5 win over Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

In afternoon play, No. 3 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland coasted past Romania’s Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-3 to become the first player to punch her ticket to the quarterfinals. Swiatek next will oppose No. 28 Anna Kalinskaya, who beat No. 12 Ekaterina Alexandrova 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1 in an all-Russian matchup late Wednesday night.

Veronika Kudermetova of Russia rallied to upset No. 16 Clara Tauson of Denmark 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Kudermetova didn’t face a break point and lost just three service points in the deciding third set to move into the fourth round against Linette.

Charlotte FC acquired striker Archie Goodwin from Australian club Adelaide United, the teams announced on Wednesday.

Goodwin, a 20-year-old Australian, was transferred for an undisclosed fee and has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract through 2028 with his new team.

Goodwin led the first-division club Adelaide with 13 goals in 26 games during the 2024-25 season. Goodwin’s 13 goals also tied for the league lead with Sydney FC’s Adrian Segecic. He was a joint Golden Boot winner in the A-League with Segecic.

“His awareness within the box, willingness to run and attack spaces are a few of the top qualities we saw that made us want to pursue him,” Charlotte general manager Zoran Krneta said. “We want to see Archie develop and create good competition within our club.”

Charlotte FC is currently seventh in the Eastern Conference with 41 points and a 13-11-2 record.

The MLS Secondary Transfer Window closes on Aug. 21.
