Paul Goldschmidt’s 10th-inning slam lifts Cards over Jays

Paul Goldschmidt hit a walk-off grand slam with two outs in the 10th inning, giving the St. Louis Cardinals a 7-3 win over the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night.

Goldschmidt extended his hit streak to 15 games with his seventh homer of the season, ending the opener of a two-game series.

Pinch runner Lars Nootbaar, placed at second base, took third on a wild pitch by David Phelps (0-1). After Harrison Bader and pinch hitter Albert Pujols struck out, Tommy Edman walked. Ryan Borucki replaced Phelps and walked pinch hitter Edmundo Sosa to set up the grand slam.

George Springer had a solo home run and a bases-loaded walk for Toronto, which lost its second game in a row.

Juan Yepez belted a solo shot for St. Louis, which has won four straight.

Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas allowed three runs, four hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five.

Toronto right-hander Jose Berrios allowed three runs and seven hits while striking out seven in 6 1/3 innings. He didn’t walk a batter.

Santiago Espinal, who was moved up to second in Toronto’s batting order, singled in the first inning to extend his career-best hitting streak to 16 games. He finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and a walk.

St. Louis scored once in the second. Nolan Arenado led off with a single and scored on Brendan Donovan’s one-out double down the right field line.

Springer led off the sixth by lining his eighth homer of the season to left.

With one out in the seventh, Alejandro Kirk singled and Matt Chapman walked. Bradley Zimmer was hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases. Andre Pallante replaced Mikolas and walked Springer and Espinal to force in two runs.

Yepez lined his fourth homer of the season to left with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Donovan and Corey Dickerson followed with singles to put runners at the corners. Adam Cimber replaced Berrios before Harrison Bader hit an RBI single to tie the game 3-3.

Genesis Cabrera (2-1) pitched around an intentional walk to strand two in the top of the 10th, aided by Donovan’s diving catch in right field.

Jackie Young hits milestone as Aces roll over Sparks

A’ja Wilson scored 24 points, including 14 in a dominant first quarter, and the Las Vegas Aces closed out a perfect homestand Monday with a 104-76 rout of the Los Angeles Sparks in Commissioner’s Cup action.

Las Vegas (7-1) overwhelmed Los Angeles early, closing the opening period on a 23-3 run. Both Wilson and Jackie Young, who finished with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor, scored 14 points in the quarter — just five less each than the entire Sparks lineup.

Young surpassed 1,000 career points during the first half, adding a career milestone on an outstanding individual night. She grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to contribute to the Aces’ 42-32 advantage on the glass, and passed for five assists.

With their opening deluge, the Aces broke a franchise record set just one game prior. The 39 points they closed with in the opening 10 minutes on Monday was one more than their third-quarter output in Saturday’s 100-80 rout of Phoenix.

The consecutive blowouts wrapped up a 4-0 homestand in which Las Vegas won by an average margin of 16.5 points per game.

The Aces finished Monday’s contest 18-of-38 from 3-point range, with Kelsey Plum leading the way at 5-of-8 en route to 17 points. Plum also dished a team-high eight assists.

Chelsea Gray shot 4-of-6 from deep and finished with 14 points. Kierstan Bell — who scored a career-high 12 points — and Theresa Plaisance each made two 3-pointers off the bench.

Las Vegas hit 11 of its first 12 attempts from beyond the arc.

Los Angeles (2-5), meanwhile, shot just 5-of-23 on 3-point attempts. The Sparks never recovered from the early onslaught, and the gap ballooned to as many as 36 points in the third quarter.

Monday’s loss marked the fifth straight for the Sparks.

Chennedy Carter led Los Angeles with 17 points off the bench. Jordin Canada scored 11 points and dished nine assists, while Liz Cambage finished with 10 points facing her former team.

Max Kepler’s grand slam helps Twins edge Tigers

Max Kepler hit a grand slam in the first inning and scored the winning run in the ninth as the Minnesota Twins extended their winning streak to five games by edging the Detroit Tigers 5-4 on Monday in Minneapolis.

Gio Urshela’s one-out infield single against Andrew Chafin (0-1) brought home Kepler, who walked and moved to third on Kyle Garlick’s single.

Luis Arraez reached base four times and scored a run, while Emilio Pagan (1-1) struck out four in two scoreless innings of relief while collecting the victory.

Twins starter Chris Archer gave up one run on three hits and struck out four in four innings.

Jonathan Schoop homered, doubled and scored two runs for Detroit. Miguel Cabrera and Eric Haase each had two hits and an RBI.

Elvin Rodriguez, making his first major league start after being recalled from Triple-A Toledo, gave up Kepler’s grand slam and then tossed four scoreless innings.

The Tigers had runners in scoring position with two outs in the first. Archer retired Harold Castro on a fly ball to snuff out that threat.

Kepler then gave his team a comfortable lead in the bottom of the inning. Rodriguez got into trouble by walking Arraez with one out. Carlos Correa singled and Jorge Polanco reached on an infield hit to load the bases. Kepler then crushed a 2-0 changeup over the right field wall for a 4-0 Minnesota lead.

The Tigers got one of those runs back in the second. Willi Castro walked and advanced to third on Spencer Torkelson’s single. One out later, Daz Cameron hit into a fielder’s choice as Castro scored.

Detroit stranded a couple more runners in the fourth. Schoop cut Minnesota’s advantage to 4-2 in the fifth when he crushed a hanging breaking ball from Griffin Jax over the left-field wall.

The Tigers pulled within one run in the sixth when Torkelson doubled with two outs and scored on Haase’s single to left.

Detroit tied the score in the seventh against Joe Smith. Schoop smacked a one-out double and scored on Cabrera’s single.

Rhyne Howard, Dream aim for revenge against Mystics

Four days after the Washington Mystics defeated the Atlanta Dream on the road after trailing by double digits in the second half, the teams will have a rematch Tuesday night in Washington.

Atlanta won four of its first five games before the 78-73 loss Friday to Washington, a game in which the Dream could not hold a 56-46 lead midway through the third quarter.

The Mystics went on an 11-0 run to get back into the game.

Ariel Atkins had 18 points and Natasha Cloud contributed 16 for Washington, which then lost 82-73 Sunday at home to the Chicago Sky.

At Friday’s matchup with the Mystics, Rhyne Howard led the Dream with 21 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range.

The rookie was the league’s leading scorer entering Monday’s action, averaging 20.5 points per game. She was also the top player in made 3-pointers a game at 3.5.

The games against Washington carry more significance for Howard, who was selected No. 1 overall in the WNBA draft after the Mystics traded that pick to Atlanta for the Dream’s No. 3 and No. 14 overall picks.

“It’s just another game, but, I mean, if I can show them what they’re missing out on, then that’s a bonus, too,” Howard said.

Cheyenne Parker is the only other Atlanta player averaging double figures in scoring at 11.5 points per game.

In the Mystics’ loss to Chicago on Sunday, they shot just 37.5 percent from the field. The Sky took over with a 21-5 run between the third and fourth quarters.

“There’s going to be some games where shots don’t fall,” said Elena Delle Donne, who had 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field in the loss. “It’s just not allowing each of us to get into our own heads and being on our own islands and not still playing through it and playing together.”

Atkins again led the Mystics in scoring with 20 points but struggled from the field, making 6 of 16 attempts.

Delle Donne leads the Mystics, averaging 18.2 points per game, while Atkins is next at 16.1. Cloud averages 12.8 points, and she is also contributing 6.8 assists per game.

Zack Wheeler pitches Phillies past host Braves

Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler pitched 6 2/3 strong innings and continued his recent mastery of the host Atlanta Braves, beating them 7-3 on Monday.

Wheeler, who grew up a few miles from Atlanta’s Truist Park, evened his season record at 3-3. He allowed two runs on eight hits and a season-high 10 strikeouts and no walks. He has a 1.38 ERA over his last five starts and picked up his first road win of the season.

Since joining the Phillies in 2020, Wheeler is 3-2 with a 1.87 ERA in eight starts against Atlanta.

Philadelphia closer Corey Knebel pitched a scoreless ninth inning in a non-save situation.

The losing pitcher was rookie Tucker Davidson (1-1), who was knocked out after 2 2/3 innings. He allowed five runs on four hits, four walks and two strikeouts.

The Phillies took control when they scored three times in the second inning. Rhys Hoskins delivered a bases-loaded double in the left-center alley to clear the bases. Hoskins has 14 RBIs in his past 14 games.

Philadelphia added three more runs in the third inning. J.T. Realmuto tripled into the left field corner to drive in a run. Realmuto then scored, along with Johan Camargo, when Roman Quinn doubled. Quinn’s high fly ball appeared to be catchable but dropped in when center fielder Adam Duvall gave way after seeing right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. charging toward him.

The Phillies upped the lead to 7-0 on Jean Segura’s RBI single in the fourth.

The Braves got a run in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Dansby Swanson. Austin Riley singled home a run in the seventh.

Atlanta scored again in the eighth on Ozzie Albies’ sharp single, making it 7-3.

Acuna went 0-for-5 and had his on-base streak end at 29 games. The streak dated back to June 25, 2021.

Alabama lands St. Bonaventure transfer Dominick Welch

Shooting guard Dominick Welch transferred from St. Bonaventure to Alabama, the Crimson Tide program announced Monday.

Welch played four seasons with the Bonnies and will use his extra year of NCAA eligibility in Tuscaloosa. He has career averages of 10.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game in 110 career games (105 starts).

In his senior campaign last season, Welch started all 33 games and averaged 37.5 minutes per game. He was St. Bonaventure’s fourth-leading scorer (12.3 ppg) and second-leading rebounder (6.0 rpg) while making 2.8 3-pointers per game at a 37.4 percent clip.

“We are excited to have Dom join our program,” Alabama coach Nate Oats said in a statement. “He is a versatile wing who has experience and can really score the ball. He was one of the top shooters in the A-10 leading the league in threes made per game last year, so we expect him to thrive in our system.”

Welch is a native of Buffalo, N.Y., and Oats coached at Buffalo for four years before Alabama hired him to the same position.

Alabama, which won the SEC regular-season and tournament titles and reached the Sweet 16 in 2021 before making a first-round NCAA Tournament exit last year, also signed Ohio transfer guard Mark Sears in April.

Welch is the second St. Bonaventure product to find a home in the SEC in recent weeks. Kyle Lofton, also a guard, transferred to Florida earlier this month.

Tyler Anderson dazzles as Dodgers pummel Nationals

Tyler Anderson allowed five hits over eight scoreless innings and Freddie Freeman had three hits and drove in two runs to power the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 10-1 win over the host Washington Nationals on Monday.

Anderson (5-0), who didn’t allow a hit until Cesar Hernandez’s double with one out in the sixth, finished with eight strikeouts and no walks. He threw 77 of his 101 pitches for strikes.

After the Dodgers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on Trea Turner’s run-scoring groundout that brought in Mookie Betts and Will Smith’s single to center that plated Freeman, the visitors broke the game open in fourth.

With two outs, Cody Bellinger walked and stole second before coming around to score on Chris Taylor’s triple to right-center. After Gavin Lux walked, Betts belted a two-run double off right fielder Juan Soto’s glove for a 5-0 lead.

In the fifth, Bellinger’s two-out double to center that scored Smith pushed the lead to 6-0 and ended the night of Nationals starter Joan Adon (1-8). The right-hander allowed six runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and four walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Reliever Austin Voth didn’t fare much better. After getting the third out of the fifth inning, he allowed four straight baserunners in the sixth, including an RBI double by Freeman and a two-run single by Turner for a 9-0 lead. Turner finished 1-for-4 with three RBIs before exiting the game.

Freeman, who went 3-for-5 with two runs, added a single in the seventh that plated Lux.

Washington avoided the shutout on Josh Bell’s RBI single in the ninth inning off reliever Phil Bickford.

Betts went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs and a walk, with Lux going 2-for-4 with three runs and a walk.

The Dodgers earned their eighth win in their past nine games, while the Nationals lost for the sixth time in their past eight games.

Ramon Urias’ homer propels Orioles past slumping Yankees

Ramon Urias hit a tiebreaking homer with two outs in the sixth inning off Gerrit Cole Monday night, lifting the visiting Baltimore Orioles to a 6-4 victory over the New York Yankees, who are on their first three-game losing streak of the season.

Urias snapped a 4-4 tie when he lifted a 95 mph 0-1 fastball into the short porch in right field for his third homer of the season.

Urias’ blast helped the Orioles win for the fourth time in five games following a six-game skid. They also overcame two more homers by Yankees slugger Aaron Judge against them.

Judge hit his major league-leading 16th and 17th homers of the season by connecting for a solo homer in the first inning and a two-run tying shot in the fifth off Jordan Lyles (3-4). It was Judge’s 20th career multi-homer game and gave him 32 career homers against the Orioles.

In between Judge blasts, the Orioles put together a four-run third off Cole (4-1), who allowed a season-high five runs on seven hits in eight innings. Cole struck out 11, walked none and threw 110 pitches.

Urias started the rally with a double down the left field line, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Robinson Chirinos. Following a single and stolen base by Cedric Mullins, Austin Hays ripped a two-run single up the middle for a 3-2 lead and the Orioles took a 4-2 lead on a run-scoring groundout by Ryan Mountcastle.

Jose Trevino also hit an RBI single for the Yankees, who are on their first three-game slide since dropping seven straight last September. Before getting swept in Sunday’s doubleheader to the Chicago White Sox and dropping their second straight to Baltimore, the Yankees had won 24 of 29.

Lyles withstood becoming the latest Baltimore pitcher to allow a homer to Judge and allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits in 6 2/3 innings. Lyles lasted into the seventh for the third time this season and threw a season-high 117 pitches.

Lyles was lifted for Felix Bautista after allowing a single to Anthony Rizzo. Bautista walked Judge but ended the seventh by fanning Giancarlo Stanton and also pitched a perfect eighth.

Jorge Lopez notched his fifth save after the Orioles added their final run on a sacrifice fly by Chirinos in the ninth inning.

Homers by Patrick Wisdom, Ian Happ lift Cubs over Reds

Patrick Wisdom homered in his fourth consecutive game and Ian Happ continued his domination of the Cincinnati Reds with an insurance three-run homer to lead the visiting Chicago Cubs to a 7-4 win on Monday night.

Happ, who played nearby at the University of Cincinnati, added an RBI double and drove in four runs for the Cubs, who won the opener of the four-game series. Happ has 14 career homers and 29 RBIs at Great American Ball Park in 35 games.

Lefty Drew Smyly (2-5) won for just the second time in eight starts, allowing three runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking two. David Robertson pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save.

Aristides Aquino homered twice for the Reds, who were playing their 1,500th regular season game at Great American Ball Park since it opened in 2003 and lost the opener of their seven-game homestand.

The Cubs broke through against Reds starter Vladimir Gutierrez (0-6) in the fourth when Seiya Suzuki and Happ opened with doubles off Gutierrez for a 1-0 lead. Gutierrez settled down to retire the next two batters before Alfonso Rivas lined a one-hopper to Mike Moustakas at third that the Cincinnati infielder couldn’t handle.

The next batter, Wisdom, drilled a first-pitch fastball to the seats in right-center for a three-run homer that gave Chicago a 4-0 lead. It was his 10th long ball of the season.

Gutierrez allowed four runs and four hits over four innings, striking out five and walking two in losing his sixth decision in seven starts.

The Reds got to Smyly in the sixth for three runs on a pair of home runs. Tommy Pham’s fifth homer of the season, a solo one-out shot to left, made it 4-1. Three batters later, Aquino crushed a knuckle-curve to left-center for his third homer of the season, cutting the Chicago lead to one, 4-3, and chasing Smyly from the game.

The Cubs immediately got the three runs back when Happ greeted reliever Luis Cessa by drilling a slider to the seats in right-center for his fourth homer.

Aquino blasted his second homer of the night and third of the year, a solo drive off Chris Martin, with two outs in the eighth.

Nazem Kadri’s hat trick gives Avs 3-1 edge on Blues

Nazem Kadri scored a hat trick to lift the visiting Avalanche past the St. Louis Blues 6-3 on Monday, giving Colorado a commanding 3-1 lead in the second-round Western Conference playoff series.

Kadri became the focal point for Game 4 after crashing into St. Louis goaltender Jordan Binnington along with Blues defenseman Calle Rosen in Game 3. The incident knocked Binnington out for the series with a lower-body injury and triggered online threats to Kadri.

In addition to Kadri’s four points, the Avalanche got goals from Erik Johnson, Devon Toews and Mikko Rantanen. Darcy Kuemper made 17 saves for the win.

David Perron scored twice for the Blues and Pavel Buchnevich had a goal and an assist. St. Louis goalie Ville Husso allowed five goals on 36 shots.

Game 5 of the best-of-seven series will be played Wednesday in Denver.

The Avalanche controlled much of the first period while outshooting the Blues 15-3, but St. Louis escaped with a 1-0 lead. Perron gave the Blues their advantage with a backhand move cutting across the crease at 5:07.

Colorado used a three-goal flurry in less two minutes to seize momentum in the second period.

Johnson started the surge with a point shot through traffic at 2:44. Kadri then broke in on right wing to convert a two-on-two rush at 4:07.

Toews scored just 19 seconds later by converting a St. Louis offensive zone turnover into a goal from the high slot.

Trailing 3-1, the Blues sought retribution against Kadri. First Buchnevich bumped him down, then Perron cross-checked him to the ice and jumped him.

The Avalanche peppered Husso during the resulting five-on-three power play, and they made it 4-1 when Kadri scored from the right circle shortly after that advantage expired.

The Blues cut the deficit to 4-3 with two power-play goals in the final 2:58 of the period. Perron scored his ninth goal in 10 playoff games this year with a blast from the left circle. Buchnevich chipped in a rebound during a goalmouth scramble with 33 seconds left before the second intermission.

Kadri struck again with a snap shot from the left circle 9:38 into the third period to put Colorado up 5-3. Rantanen added an empty-net goal with two seconds remaining.
