The Overwatch League Grand Finals will be held in Toronto Sept. 28-Oct. 1, the league announced Friday.
Mattamy Athletic Centre, once home to the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, will serve as the venue. It’s the first time the OWL Grand Finals will be staged in Canada, with the Toronto Defiant and their parent company, OverActive Media, helping to host the event.
“We are seeing a growing interest in esports in Toronto, and we are immensely proud to create unparalleled experiences that bridge the gap between traditional sports and gaming for our fans and partners,” OverActive Media chief commercial officer Alyson Walker said in a statement.
The top eight teams in the league will head to Toronto for the tournament, starting with a double-elimination group stage followed by a single-elimination playoff. They will compete for a $1.855 million prize pool, with $1 million going to the winning team. The Dallas Fuel are the defending champions.
