OVERWATCH News: Fuel stun Shock for first place in Summer Showdown West qualifying

The Dallas Fuel toppled the San Francisco Shock 3-1 in a battle of the final two unbeaten teams at Overwatch League Summer Showdown West Region qualifying on Friday.

The Fuel handed the Shock their first loss since the finals of the Midseason Madness tournament July 23. It was also San Francisco’s first loss in qualifiers at any point this year.

Dallas went ahead early by winning 2-1 on Ilios and 4-3 on Paraiso. The Shock responded with a 3-2 win on Dorado, but it was too little, too late. The Fuel took a 1-0 result on New Queen Street for the victory.

Also Friday, the Los Angeles Gladiators swept the Atlanta Reign 3-0 and the New York Excelsior beat the Paris Eternal 3-1.

The Gladiators bested the Reign 2-1 on Lijiang Tower, 3-2 on Hollywood and 1-0 on Dorado. The Excelsior beat the Eternal 2-0 on Ilios and 2-1 on Paraiso, and after a 3-1 defeat on Junkertown, New York wrapped it up with a 1-0 win on Colosseo.

Qualifying concludes on Sunday, with the top four teams from the East and the top eight from the West advancing to the $330,000 Summer Showdown starting on Sept. 8.
