On Sunday, the 94th Academy Awards ceremony took place at the Dolby Theater, in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The event was filled with a few surprises including the winners as well as drama on stage. It became of one the wildest ever Oscars in the recent past. However, the drama has blown over and all is well between the two involved in the incident; with apologies from one and brushing aside the matter, without filing a case, by the other.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ceremony was looking for and expecting a win in viewership after the pandemic threw live events into the dark and awards ceremonies became virtual. However, what happened was sheer drama on stage. Will Smith slapped Cris Brown for joking about his wife’s Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair.

Comedian Chris Brown joked inappropriately just before the presentation of the award for the best documentary. Will Smith came on stage and slapped him, surprising many and shocking a few. ABC silenced the mikes as the two shouted profanities at each other. However, international feeds of the live event captured the shouting match, bits of which have appeared on Twitter and other social media platforms.
The event soon blew over. In a short while, Smith came on stage again, this time to accept the Best Actor Award for his performance in “King Richard.” He apologized for his earlier behavior and said, “Love will make you do crazy things.” Jessica Chastian won the award For Best Actress for her performance in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”
The Sunday event also created history in other ways. A film by a streaming service won the Best Picture Award. CODA won totally three awards including the coveted best picture award. One of its stars, Troy Kotsur was the first deaf man to win an acting award–Best Supporting Actor.
Another first at the 2022 Oscars was a win by Ariana DeBose. She became the first queer Black woman to win an award for acting. She got the “Best Supporting Actress” award for “West Side Story.
Jane Campion won the Best Director award for “The Power of the Dog” while “Dune” took the most number of awards as it got six of them. After three years, the event was hosted by three–Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes.
