Origin is the latest work by writer/director Ava DuVernay to address the issue, “How do we confront oppression?” When it comes to complicated topics of societal injustice, we see the fearless and inspiring examination of the interrelated origins of hate; DuVernay shines a light on Isabel Wilkerson, a prominent nonfiction writer, to discover the answer.

Based on the New York Times best-selling book Caste- The Origins of Our Discontents, it was inspired by the research and life experiences of Pulitzer Prize–winning Wilkerson, and Origin recounts those experiences.

Adapting the book’s key themes to the film by DuVernay is superb. The novelist Isabel Wilkerson’s life and viewpoint are depicted in this film.
