Instagram and Facebook (META) users in Europe can opt out of targeted ads for a monthly subscription fee. European users and those from Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland, can pay €9.99 ($10.60) on the web or €12.99 ($13.78) on iOS and Android.
For years, these social media platforms have relied on personalized advertising to generate revenue. However, amidst growing concerns about data privacy and ad tracking, they have decided to provide a subscription-based alternative. European users who opt for this service will be able to enjoy an ad-free browsing experience while still being able to access the core features of both platforms.
This new feature marks a significant shift in the way social media giants interact with their user base. It recognizes the value of consumer data and aims to cater to those who are willing to pay for enhanced privacy and a more streamlined user experience.
The move also aligns with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which emphasizes user consent and data protection. By offering a paid subscription option, Instagram and Facebook are ensuring that their practices comply with EU privacy laws, granting users the choice they deserve.
Meta issued a press release and said, “Whether people choose to use our products for free with ads or subscribe to stop seeing ads, we are committed to keeping people’s information private and secure, under our own policies as well as the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).”
