Ole Miss fired head coach Kermit Davis on Friday, ending his five-season run that began in March 2018.
Davis went 74-79 overall and posted a 10-18 record this season, including 2-13 in Southeastern Conference play.
Assistant coach Win Case will serve as acting head coach for the remainder of the 2023 season, athletic director Keith Carter announced in a press release Friday morning.
“We thank Coach Davis for his dedication to the Ole Miss basketball program and our student-athletes,” Carter said. “No one wanted to bring a title home to Mississippi more than him, and we appreciate the passion for that goal that he shared with our team every day. As he has throughout his career, Coach Davis worked tirelessly to produce a winner, and we wish him, Betty and his family the very best in the future.”
Davis, 63, was 20-13 and took Ole Miss to the NCAA Tournament in his first season, earning 2019 SEC Coach of the Year. He also reached the postseason in 2021 with an NIT appearance.
“My family and I are extremely thankful for the opportunity to lead the Ole Miss men’s basketball program the past five years,” Davis said. “We appreciate Chancellor (Glenn) Boyce, Keith Carter, the staff and players for their support and work ethic on behalf of our program, and I wish Ole Miss the best going forward. Oxford is a special place to live and work.”
The all-time winningest coach at Middle Tennessee State before he was hired at Ole Miss, Davis boasts a career record of 477-317 as a Division-I head coach and led three different programs to the NCAA Tournament, including Ole Miss, MTSU and Idaho.
Carter said a national search for Davis’ replacement was underway.
