Following the fiery derailing of one of the firm’s trains carrying dangerous chemicals, a new federal lawsuit demands that railroad operator Norfolk Southern pay for health checks. In the border between Ohio and Pennsylvania, the incident took place.
Norfolk Southern was ordered to pay for medical examinations and related care for everyone residing within a 30-mile (48-kilometer) radius of the incident, according to the lawsuit, which was filed on Thursday by two Pennsylvania residents. Additionally, the lawsuit asks for unspecified damages.
The impacted areas’ residents are attempting to compel the rail operator to set up health monitoring for them. The train, which had 150 freight cars and three locomotives, was traveling from Illinois to Pennsylvania when it derailed on Friday just before 9 p.m. EST.
The EPA said, “We continue to conduct home screenings to ensure there are no unsafe levels of chemicals in residents’ homes. We have screened five hundred homes as of Feb. 16, and will do 27 more today.”
People are still scared to go home and have complained that there has been no response from FEMA or the government. The municipal water system may be safe, but the rural water system may not be. Locals are skeptical over tests performed by the government.
The authorities made the decision to burn and release vinyl chloride within five tanker cars. In this process, poisonous gas phosgene and hydrogen chloride were released into the atmosphere.
Officials also cautioned that breathing in the vapors posed a high danger of lung damage and may be fatal.
The Biden administration announced that it has sent federal medical experts to Palestine, Ohio where a train carrying hazardous materials derailed this month to help assess the dangers there. This is an increase in federal assistance at the governor’s request as worried residents point to signs of negative detrimental health issues this incident may and have caused.

Ohio Department of Health reports, “Dr. Vanderhoff went to East Palestine to meet with local health officials this week. Here’s what we know about water. Sampling of East Palestine’s municipal water system found no evidence of contamination associated with the derailment. However, if you have concerns about your water, you can use bottled water. If you receive water from a private well and are concerned about water quality, you are encouraged to use bottled water until your water has been tested. To request free, private well testing, call 330-849-3919. Resources are available for those who live in the East Palestine community.
