Defender Gabrielle Carle signed a two-year contract with the Washington Spirit, coming back across the Atlantic and rejoining her college coach.

“The Washington Spirit is a club that really resonates with my values,” Carle said. “It kind of feels like I’m coming home even though it’s a new challenge. I’ve heard great things about Washington, D.C. It has a great culture and is a great sports city and I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Carle spent 2022 — her first professional season — with Kristianstads DFF of the Damallsvenskan, the highest division of women’s soccer in Sweden. She amassed almost 1,900 minutes of play across 22 matches, adding two goals and one assist.

Carle, 24, is a native of Levis, Quebec, and has played in over 30 matches for the Canada Women’s National Team since 2015. She was named to the 2019 World Cup team and served as an alternate for last year’s team at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The move reunites Carle with her coach at Florida State University, Mark Krikorian, who is now the President of Soccer Operations for the Spirit. Carle helped the Seminoles to two national championships, being named to the 2018 College Cup All-Tournament Team and the 2021 All-ACC Second Team.

“Gabby brings so much versatility to our team and will be an excellent addition to our roster for 2023,” said Krikorian. “We’re looking forward to welcoming her to the Spirit as well as the NWSL.”

The deal has a team option for the 2025 season.
