Trinity Armstrong bounced in a header in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time as the host San Diego Wave FC won their third straight National Women’s Soccer League match, 2-1, over Bay FC on Sunday night.
It was the first professional goal for the 17-year-old Armstrong, who headed a corner cross from Kenza Dali into the ground in front of the middle of the 6-yard box. The ball then bounced high over the outstretched arm of goalie Jordan Silkowitz and under the crossbar for the game-winner.
Kennedy Wesley also scored for San Diego (4-2-1, 13 points), which moved into third place in the NWSL. Kailen Sheridan finished with one save.
Karlie Lema scored for Bay FC (2-3-2, 8 points), which had a two-match point streak snapped. Silkowitz made three saves, including one on a first-half penalty shot.
San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Wesley headed Maria Sanchez’s corner kick from the middle of the box inside the far post for her first goal of the season
Bay FC tied it in the 18th minute on Lema’s right-footed shot from the right side of the box inside the far post for her second goal.
The Wave, who hit a post and a crossbar in the first half, also had a chance to regain the lead in the 27th minute on a penalty kick by Sanchez. However, Silkowitz made a diving right-arm save on a left-footed try by the Mexican international by the left post.
