NWSL News: Thembi Kgatlana leaves Racing Louisville in record transfer

Racing Louisville announced the transfer Wednesday of forward Thembi Kgatlana to Mexico’s Tigres for a franchise-record fee.

A specific amount was not disclosed, but Racing’s news release said the “six-figure” transfer fee is the second-highest in NWSL history for a player departing to a foreign team.

The agreement includes a sell-on clause and a potential add-on to the transfer fee if Kgatlana scores a certain number of goals for Tigres, who compete in Liga MX Femenil.

Kgatlana, 27, of South Africa, recorded two goals and two assists in 16 appearances for Racing in 2023.

“While my time at Racing Louisville was short-lived, I am truly thankful to the fans and the people of Louisville for their support,” Kgatlana said in a news release. “The affection and experience I received at the club will always be a big part of my life and career. I am sure we will cross paths again in the future.”

Kgatlana originally joined Racing from Atletico Madrid in July 2022 but suffered a torn Achilles tendon and missed the 2022 season.

“We want to wish Thembi all the best as she takes on a new challenge in Mexico,” Racing general manager Ryan Dell said. “Naturally we are disappointed to lose such a talented player who is a great presence in our locker room, but we had extensive discussions with Thembi and completely respected her desire for this move. This is a life-changing opportunity for her and her family.”
