NWSL News: Seattle Reign bring back F McKenzie Weinert

Seattle Reign FC have signed forward McKenzie Weinert to a one-year contract, the club announced Wednesday.

Weinert, 25, played in two matches for the Reign in 2023 before spending the 2023-24 season with Melbourne Victory FC in the A-League Women, the top women’s soccer league in Australia. She started all 17 games and collected five goals and one assist – the second-highest combined total on the team.

“It’s an honor to be back in Seattle with this amazing team,” Weinert said in a news release. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to compete at such a high level and look forward to contributing to the club’s success.”

Weinert spent time with the Reign in the 2023 preseason as a non-roster invitee, scoring in an international friendly against Club America, and made one start in a Challenge Cup match, totaling 83 minutes.

“Bringing Kenzie back to Seattle Reign after her time at Melbourne Victory is a win for the club,” Reign general manager Lesle Gallimore said in the release. “Kenzie knows and understands our environment. She is a player who has absolutely embraced the work of her own development and has proven that she can learn, grow and be a player who impacts games. Her pace, her passion and her personality make her a wonderful signing for us, and we can’t wait to have her back in Seattle.”

A native of Milwaukie, Ore., Weinert played at Oregon State for four seasons and at the University of Washington for two.
