Vlatko Andonovski, who resigned in August as head coach of the U.S. women’s national team, will take the same position with the Kansas City Current of the NWSL, multiple media outlets reported on Friday.

According to the Equalizer and ESPN, Andonovski also will serve as the club’s sporting director.

Andonovski, 47, had led the USWNT since 2019, when he took over after Jill Ellis stepped down.

The USWNT put up a 51-5-9 record under Andonovski, but they didn’t enjoy as much success on the global stage as they were accustomed to. They settled for bronze at the 2020 Olympics and lost to Sweden in a penalty shootout in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Round of 16 this summer.

Andonovski previously coached men’s and women’s clubs in the Kansas City area: the Missouri Comets of the Major Indoor Soccer League (2010-13 as an assistant, 2013-16 as head coach) and FC Kansas City (2013-17).

The latter was a founding club of the NWSL and the precursor to the Kansas City Current. The league returned to the city in 2021 after FC Kansas City ceased business operations and had its players transferred to the expansion Utah Royals.

Andonovski also coached the NWSL’s Reign FC from 2018-19 before taking over the USWNT post.
