Denver Summit FC’s home opener in the franchise’s inaugural season came with plenty of fanfare but no goals in a scoreless draw with the Washington Spirit in front of an NWSL record crowd Saturday at Denver.
A turnout of 63,004 spectators at Empower Field at Mile High never saw a goal. The teams combined for seven corner kicks and never converted.
Goalkeeper Abby Smith made two saves for the Summit (1-1-2, 5 points).
Goalkeeper Sandy MacIver made two saves as the Spirit (0-1-3, 3 points) remained winless.
Royals 2, Legacy 1
Lara Prasnikar’s penalty kick early in the second half proved to be the difference as Utah prevailed over Boston in Foxborough, Mass., for the Royals’ first victory of the season.
Tatumn Milazzo’s first-half goal put Utah (1-2-1, 4 points) ahead and Prasnikar pushed the margin to 2-0 five minutes into the second half following Anni Karich’s foul in the penalty area.
Aissata Traore scored in the 72nd minute for Legacy (0-3-0, 0 points), which had been shut out in their first two matches of the season. There were 40 total fouls called in the game, with 25 on Boston.
Thorns 2, Current 0
Olivia Moultrie and Reilyn Turner scored in a 10-minute stretch in the second half to lift host Portland over Kansas City.
Moultrie opened the scoring on a penalty kick in the 53rd minute. Turner knocked in a header off an assist from Jayden Perry for the second tally.
Mackenzie Arnold made four saves for the Thorns (3-1-0, 9 points). The Current (1-3-0, 3 points) were shut out for the second match in a row.
Reign 2, Racing Louisville 1
Maddie Mercado scored in the 10th minute on Seattle’s first shot and the Reign held on amid Racing Louisville FC’s second-half attack at Spokane, Wash.
Nerilia Mondesir also scored in the first half for the Reign (3-1-0, 9 points), who scored on their only two shots on goal. Sam Meza and Ainsley McCammon had assists. Seattle goalkeeper Claudia Dickey made five saves.
Macy Blackburn’s goal in extra time for Racing Louisville (0-2-1, 1 point) prevented a shutout.
Bay 3, Courage 1
Alex Pfeiffer scored the first of Bay FC’s three goals in a 14-minute span of the first half against North Carolina in Cary, N.C.
Keira Barry and Dorian Bailey had the other goals for Bay FC (2-1-0, 6 points). Pfeiffer also had an assist, with Sydney Collins and Cristiana Girelli providing the other assists. Goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz made one save for the victory.
Manaka Matsukubo scored in the 65th minute for the Courage. North Carolina (1-1-1, 4 points) had allowed a total of one goal in its first two matches.
Wave 2, Stars 0
Lia Godfrey and Melanie Barcenas scored second-half goals for host San Diego against Chicago.
Dudinha assisted on both goals for San Diego (3-1-0, 9 points). Leah Freeman made one save for the clean sheet.
The Stars (1-3-0, 3 points) suffered their third shutout loss. Alyssa Naeher stopped six shots.
