The North Carolina Courage signed goalkeeper Hensley Hancuff to a contract extension before lending her to Swedish side Vaxjo DFF.

The extension announced Tuesday runs through the 2025 NWSL season. The loan covers the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign in Sweden’s top flight, with the Courage reserving the right to recall Hancuff during sanctioned FIFA transfer windows.

Hancuff, 23, originally joined the Courage on a national team replacement contract. She was drafted 24th overall in 2022 by Gotham FC but did not make an appearance for the club.

“Hensley has consistently shown her ability and value through her time with us this season,” NCC chief soccer officer Curt Johnson said. “We pride ourselves on player development, and that includes identifying the best ways to help our players grow and thrive. … We’re thrilled for her to get this opportunity while also remaining a part of the Courage going forward.”

Hancuff played collegiately at Villanova and then Clemson, where she led the Tigers to the quarterfinals of the 2020 College Cup as a junior. Her 0.79 goals-against average that season ranked fifth in Clemson history.
